2023.06.04 02:23 AMPenguin New releases in April/May 2023
I missed doing this last month, so I've consolidated two into one for a list of some of the best releases that caught my eyes and ears in April and May 2023. It's not a comprehensive account of all notable new albums, but each one comes recommended (by me, at least).
I'd be really interested to hear what you think of them, or what other recent new releases you've been enjoying.
Here's the previous edition of this thread:
New releases in March 2023 Alfa Mist - Variables (ANTI-) UK (London)
The Alfa Mist universe expands outwards from its jazz piano/hip-hop production roots to take in old school swing, African rhythms, R&B vocals and Alfa's own slyly subversive, languid MCing, all while embracing a slightly edgier overall sound than his previous albums. I think this is his best yet.
FFO: Madlib; Tom Misch; Moses Boyd... Links: Borderline, title track, Full album

Greg Foat & Art Themen - Off-Piste (Athens of the North) UK
"Smooth" needn't be a dirty word. The latest outing for Foat and Themen's brand of library-jazz mixes the icy ambience of a Swiss mountainside with the funky sophistication of the après-ski chalet party. In lesser hands, it might have felt insubstantial, but the keyboardist is painstaking in his evocation of the perfect atmosphere, and the saxophonist rides it like an eagle coasting on the wind.
FFO: Library music; drinking cocktails in the bath Links: Fresh Snow, [TITLE](URL), Full album
* * *
KVL - Volume 2 (Astral Spirits) USA (Chicago)
Low key piano/keyboard trio pieces with electronic-inspired beats and wobbly chords. It's kind of hip-hoppy, but the grooves are avant-garde and exciting and unlike a lot of nu jazz in that vein, this wouldn't ever work as background music.
FFO: Ahmad Jamal doing jazz beats for studying Links: Absent Crash, Full album
* * *
Praed - Kaf Afrit (Akuphone) Switzerland/Lebanon
I wasn't familiar with Praed before hearing this album and it blew me away on first listen. Blending Arabic electro-pop with free jazz should be an impossible task, but these guys make it sound like the most natural thing in the world. Kaf Afrit is ominously psychedelic, with frantic, squealing reeds writhing around intense, looping, knife-edge samples over a bed of pumping basslines and motorik drum rhythms.
FFO: Melt Yourself Down; Sons of Kemet; Arabic jazz Links: Djinn Dance, Full album
* * *
Asher Gamedze - Turbulence and Pulse (International Anthem) South Africa
Gamedze combines complex rhythms with the kind of free jazz that sounds like a series of slow, deep breaths. One to ponder the universe to.
FFO: Ayler, Shepp, et al Links: Turbulence's Pulse, Wynter Time, Full album
* * *
EABS & Jaubi - In Search of a Better Tomorrow (Astigmatic) Poland & Pakistan
Another collaboration between Polish musician Latarnik (this time with his band EABS, one of the most popular on the modern Polish scene) and Pakistani jazz/Hindustani classical fusioneers Jaubi - a prospect which should excite anyone who has heard their previous work together with Tenderlonious.
FFO: Modern spiritual jazz with notes of hip-hop... Links: Strange Love, Sun, Full album
* * *
Peter Brötzmann, Majid Bekkas & Hamid Drake - Catching Ghosts (ACT) Germany/Morocco/USA
Following 2020's The Catch of a Ghost, this is another outing for Brötzmann, Drake and a Moroccan guembri player. Last time it was Maâlem Mokhtar Gania; this time it's Bekkas, whose hypnotic basslines and powerful vocals are the defining feature of this music - no mean feat when you have the Machine Gun himself in your band.
FFO: Ahmed Abdul-Malik and any other mix of jazz and traditional African music Links: Mawama, Full album
* * *
Michael Formanek Elusion Quartet - As Things Do (Intakt) USA/Canada
Anyone who follows contemporary US jazz will know Michael Formanek's name - perhaps from his work with Tim Berne, or his membership of the power-trio Thumbscrew with Mary Halvorson and Tomas Fujiwara, or from his own Ensemble Kolossus big band. His newest album is the second with the Elusion Quartet, supported by three of the most formidable talents in the New York scene - Tony Malaby on sax, Kris Davis on piano and Ches Smith on drums. Their music harks back to the modal jazz of the mid-1960s, all ambiguous harmonies and breathtaking musicianship (not least from Formanek himself).
FFO: McCoy Tyner; Wayne Shorter; Joe Henderson; bass solos Links: Full album - check out Rewind or Rockaway Beach.
* * *
Some other recs: * Kira Linn - Illusion - Electro trip-hop fusion jazz from Germany, for baritone sax fans. * Flock - In C - A fresh new album from the London supergroup featuring an epic performance of Terry Riley's magnum opus. * Brandee Younger – Brand New Life - A funky-soul-hip hop setting for the modern-day queen of jazz harp. * Chico Pinheiro & Romero Lubambo - Two Brothers - Brazillian guitar duo with killer chops and a classic sound whether they're playing Jobim or Eilish. * Terese Lien Evenstad - Movement - Blue Note-style modern post-bop from Sweden, led by violin. * The End - Why Do You Mourn - Doomy jazz-rock from Mats Gustafsson of Fire! Orchestra. * Skarbø Skulekorps - Innesko - The ecclectic Norwegian pop-jazz provocateurs with an unclassifiable-yet-infectious blend of electronics, marching rhythms and twinkly guitars. * Gretchen Parlato & Lionel Loueke - Lean In - Stunning West African guitar meets one of the most popular modern jazz singers. * Stian Westerhus & Teun Verbruggen - Earthbound Monochrome - Norwegian/Belgian duo playing agitated free improv on electric guitar, drums and electronics. * Artemis - In Real Time - All-female post-bop supergroup on Blue Note.
What did you think of these albums? Are there any others you think I should have mentioned? What upcoming releases are you looking forward to?

I'd like to find somebody thoughtful, someone who isn't superficial. Somebody who appreciates the rich vastness of our shared multicultural past, and freely follows her curiosity in exploring it. Somebody who is trying her best to adhere to the guidance of her inner moral compass, and isn't so easily fooled by the distractions and illusions of the world.
One such illusion, that must immediately be mentioned (this is important, because it's led to a break for me, in the past): religion. Religion is man-made, and not of any higher authority. The Bible and the Quran all permit slavery—in addition to countless other horrid and divisive ideas—while claiming to be eternal wisdom, and that is indefensible. I still like to believe in the idea of some permeating higher morality, that imbues us with our general sense for justice, fairness, and empathy...but, I know that without outright proof, even my holding of such a notion can be deemed a flight of fancy, a residual remnant of a system so entrenched. However, it seems to me that life is often more than just what's on the surface. Um, but now, then—back to the person I wish to know...
I'd also love it if she were artistic. Singing, sketching, painting, writing, composing, creating. Someone who is trying to nurture their talents and passions. I know it can be difficult...
As for me, well... I adore music. Mostly voices from the past (the 1960s would have to be my favorite), because I find them to be humbler and more from the heart, at least in popular music. I’ll just give an example of something I’ve looked into, and this is nowhere near representative of my wider taste, but if you go back to early 1920s country music... (Here's an aside: a lot of what people think of as "country" today is a long cry from what the genre is actually like, historically. If you are into folk music—Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan—it is indelibly linked to "country", and if you'd like a popular example of a song that originated within the genre, look no further than the universally recognized "You Are My Sunshine", from 1939!)
Anyway. If you go back to that early period, where undiscovered niches of music were still sought out and first put to tape... a lot of those artists had no idea about anything to do with recording—no ego, no attempt to sound "cool". What came through instead was a bare expression of the life that had been lived—the inner beauty of their own personhood, and I love hearing that. It's so honest. A vulnerable and piercing expression.
So if you're into history or the beautiful music of decades (and centuries) past, if you have any aspirations for creating as a method of changing the world for the better, if you'd like to play games and watch movies together, if you'd like an accountability partner—or all of the above...please message me. I don't mind the chat function, either—in fact, it's probably easier. Also, to get this out of the way:
this is what I look like.
I love beautiful things. Nature, music that tugs at your heartstrings or is so honest you're enraptured, experiences that heal. More specifically, here are some of my current interests:
- music (singing/playing an instrument/the Beach Boys are my favorite group—I also love Maybelle Carter, Cass Elliot, Pink Floyd, Lana Del Rey, The Cranberries, Sixpence None The Richer, loads of video game music, The Smiths, The Beatles, The Who, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Harry Nilsson, Joni Mitchell, The Righteous Brothers, Judy Garland, Sam Cooke, Frank Churchill, Marty O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori... Here’s a brief go at the Beatles’ “Julia”.) And, if you liked that—a more recent one…
- drawing—here are a few I've done.
- video games (any era from Atari—I like exploring the history and evolution—to the Switch and PS4) [Currently playing, or starting: The Binding of Isaac, Catherine]
- Disney, especially the Golden Age and Renaissance—Pinocchio (my favorite movie ever), Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Aladdin, The Lion King, Tarzan. I love how handmade the early films look. And yet, how no expense was spared in creating these most precious and moving works of art.
- films/series/books I've enjoyed lately: The Sound of Magic, The Little Prince, Matilda, Love Hard, The Fundamentals of Caring, This Beautiful Fantastic, Donnie Darko, Alamut by Vladimir Bartol (this book was a key inspiration for the first Assassin's Creed), The Trial of the Chicago 7, Medici: The Magnificent, Pollyanna by Eleanor Porter, Judy
To close... I suppose I should say I've been afflicted with long-COVID for over two years. It'd be very nice to keep each other company, especially if we share any of the interests up above—we could watch favorite films, have shared listening sessions on Spotify, and it'd be a godsend to find somebody up to play on PS4 and Switch!
Donkey Kong Country 2 and

I'd really like to know an intelligent person with a unique identity...who puts forth effort—though at the same time, no pressure on reaching out. If you are this type of person, but can currently only muster up a few words because, hey! Life is tough, and grueling, and we don't always have a ready-made letter in us to flip out of our pockets—don't be scared away by my tower of words. I absolutely know, firsthand, what it's like to

2023.06.04 00:21 Unusual-Helicopter15 You guys convinced me to buy my first REAL fancy handbag.
THAT DANG MICHAEL KORS CONTRAST BAG. I kept seeing people posting it. I kept following the link and lusting over it. It’s MY STYLE whereas a lot of fancy bags look nice but don’t make me go MUST SPEND $$. No shade, it’s just that I’m an elementary art teacher and I don’t have much extra money, and I’m always mildly grubby. But I kept thinking about that bag. And last night I freaking DREAMED I bought it hahahaha 😅🤣. So today I scraped around until I made space in my budget, justifying it by telling myself I’m going through IVF. I’m in the trenches. It’s the end of a hell of a school year. I’ve never bought a nice bag before. So. I ORDERED THE BAG!!! I’m genuinely so thrilled and cannot wait. I also ordered the rain and stain protector because I want this baby to last. Anyway, hahaha whoever threw out that bait (aka posted about the bag), I took it hook, line, and sinker and I’m scared at what this may have awakened in me.

2023.06.03 23:29 Efficient_Ad1992 Halloween Ends - Michael's strength
Based on both the novel and movie of Halloween Ends, if Michael has been killing people during the 4-year-gap and people have been dragged in the sewers by Michael Myers (Film) or Nelson Christopher (Novelization), how come he wasn't at full strength until 2022? Laurie said in Halloween Kills that the more Michael kills, the more stronger he becomes.

2023.06.03 22:24 Key_Cartographer_821 Vocal lesson for £90?
Hi everyone! I’ve been wanting to join a vocal class really soon so I’ve been Googling quiet a lot of them, and one of them which caught my eye because it had quiet a lot of good reviews others had too but this one had the most. The one I looked at was in London, Soho, with £90 for 55mins of lesson per day and they also had the multiple days (6 days) which is £480. From what I’ve read from their websites, their clients have won Grammys, sold Platinum records, had #1 albums, received BRIT nominations, Mercury Prize nominations, and been finalists on X-Factor. Also the coaches are the highest level Speech Level Singing instructor and was personally trained by Maestro Seth Riggs (Stevie Wonder & Michael Jackson's voice coach, and who developed speech level singing and by Dave Stroud, (One Direction, Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, Natasha Bedingfield, and Kelly Clarkson)
I’m a total amateur to this. I have never taken a vocal lesson in my entire life nor have I sung in front of anyone or had any singing experiences. I’ve wanted to be a singer since I was about 12-13 years but unfortunately my parents didn’t take it very seriously at the time. Every time I used to record myself singing and oh boy, I sounded so bad not that but my throat and jaw hurt as hell. Not from singing for a long period of time but from singing only for a minute. (This still happens btw). When I got into college, I wanted to apply for performing arts course (singing,acting,dancing) but as soon as I found out I had to audition to get into this course I ended up backing out cause I had no experience and plus I chickened out. So I ended up doing photography.
I’m 21 now. I work. I have the money for it now. I don’t have to ask my parents anymore. I’ve tried so many things and thought so hard for my future for all these years, but it turns out music is the only one for me. So by me attending these classes, I hope they can help me with whatever issues I have, able to gain more confident and be able to find my real voice. Ever since I was 13 years old, I wanted to be a singer, not a singer who does covers on YouTube but a professional singer. I want to be as big as Taylor Swift, Ariana grande, Michael Jackson etc, which probably will never happen lol. But as for now I just want to be able to learn how to sing. That’s it.
So is £90 for a 55mins lesson a days good deal?

2023.06.03 20:52 TheCoverBlog House of M/Decimation and How to Set a Status Quo Review and Analysis
| https://preview.redd.it/diyatvxfmu3b1.jpg?width=898&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2a84931675eb4368b91cd22529e58d7b507325c6 House of M and the following Decimation were two Marvel storylines in 2005. While they touched most major members of the Marvel Comics Universe, those mainly impacted were the X-Men (and their mutant friends). The result of House of M, which is explored in Decimation, is the Scarlet Witch using her reality warping powers and obliterating the mutant population via depowering them. She says three words and that’s it. No More Mutants. These words set off an entire era of X-Men comics and defined the line for years to come. Was it a powerful creative choice or was it an editorial mandate or both? How does it compare in tone and relevance to the modern X-titles? The answers honestly may be a bit surprising depending on your history with comics. For me I definitely buy the idea that this was editorial sidelining the merry mutants due to the (lack of) ownership of their film rights. However the landscape that emerges is surprisingly interesting and refreshing, at least at the start. House of M and the subsequent Decimation. Background I want to give a bit of context about where I am coming from for this review. I have never read these stories nor the following comics until the year 2019. However I have read most everything prior to 2005. This gives me an interesting perspective because I have heard extremely mixed reactions to this story and era. I am very excited to approach it though since it does seem to be quite radically different from any prior status quo and is distinct from the modern comics in just about every way. Along with House of M I have currently read the first seven issues of X-Factor and New Excalibur as well as The 198. From these titles I was able to get a pretty good feel for the beginning of this era and was honestly pretty captivated by it at the best of times. House of M I was not impressed with the actual eponymous miniseries from Brian Michael Bendis and Oliver Coipel. The story and art were both fine, but I didn’t feel particularly moved by any of the emotion or excited by the action. The best I could say is that the concept of a world where these characters get their every wish is a bit interesting and fun overall. I found most of the joy in the initial introductions and exploration of the alternate lives of the classic heroes. It felt akin to Age of Apocalypse or Heroes Reborn, and the novelty always works for me when it is done with a bit of care. Past that the plot left me with very little until of course right at the end. No matter the quality of the book, the ending is uniquely impactful at least among X-Men comics due to the reshaping of the entire line. Lowering the mutant population down to near irrelevancy is a radical shift from the past assertions and predictions of the future for mutants. Before we have always seen many futures that involve mutant domination or the complete reverse, but never a mass ‘curing’ like this. It arguably muddies the whole mutant metaphor in some ways. Terrible events of course occur that radically reduce the number of certain oppressed groups, such as the AIDS Epidemic and the gay community. The key difference here is that the mutant population is brought down by over 90%, but those individuals are still alive. It almost resembles a version of sterilization based eugenics that have been done throughout the history of the US, but that’s a pretty thin comparison at times I think. It feels like a very comic book magic based situation, which is not an inherently bad thing. The X-Men sometimes are at their best when the metaphor is used quite loosely and can be applied to a variety of experiences. Of course you run the risk of being too generic or making too broad of generalizations, but you’ll always need a good writer for a good story, you know what I mean? The status quo of the mutants having less numbers and thus less power has potential, and is a stark contrast to everything published post House of X/Powers of X. Also the idea of radical bigots identifying a sub group within an already minority community and viciously pushing for their eradication is pretty relevant in the year 2023. There’s never going to be perfect showcases of these types of themes in a Marvel superhero comic (especially when they are created by such a predominantly white cis heterosexual male demographic), but this setup at least feels new. Finishing House of M, I was more excited to explore the world of the X-Men than I had for the last probably 10 years of publication history. Decimation After the Scarlet Witch did her deed, the subsequent storylines in most X-Books was branded as Decimation and were centered on the mutants dealing with the fallout of their population reduction. I read three series to start and I believe I did them in chronological -ish order. The first was X-Men: The 198, a limited series about the Xavier mansion becoming a government internment camp for the surviving mutants. This one had some of the highest highs, but many of the lowest lows as well. I followed that with 7 issues of X-Factor and New Excalibur. These are both establishing legacy teams in a way that is comparable to their past roots, but revamped for the new era. Bringing back longtime writers Peter David and Chris Claremont may not seem like the best way to refresh the line, but it felt to me like they had matured as writers and were ready to deal with a more dire tone. Conclusion The initiative to bring the number of mutants way down, whether editorially backed or not, is an opportunity to explore some new stories. An intimate mutant network should help to make the multiple books in the line feel more connected and impactful to each other. In the best case scenario it would also help facilitate overarching storylines that exist in this shared world. I have no idea if the books will pay any of this off, but I have a renewed enthusiasm to delve into the X-Men universe of this time. Check back here in the coming days to find more in depth looks at the books in this article and any of the subsequent stories I find to be as interesting as this kickoff. This is a little bit of a read, but you can think of it as a high effort post from someone who means business. I've clearly marked and categorized everything, so feel free to skim the parts that interest you.
What brings me to reddit for dating: For the short of it, I've been doing online dating for about 7 years, and could only describe my experience as a sisyphean struggle. With more traditional dating platforms having been
absolutely torturous and a complete waste of time, with me rarely ever finding matches and those I do get ending up being ghosts or people who just don't respond less than productive, I'm hoping this might give me a breakthrough.
Age: 26, open to 18-32~. I’m less about age, more about attraction.
Appearance: 5'8", medium length blond hair (pictures are from when it was short), blue eyes, white skin, slim fit body type. I dress almost exclusively in black if I can help it, hence "closeted goth". I've been told I'm fairly handsome, but I'm including a few (poorly taken) pictures, so you can decide for yourself whether or not I've been lied to!
(Imgur seems to be having problems lately so if you're getting an error that's why. My posts tend to get automatically removed if I include any other image hosters but if you message me I can send alternatives no problem.)
Face: https://imgur.com/a/ykiCkwQ Body (Warning: Shirtless): https://imgur.com/a/zO96e63 Interests: Many of my interests fall into the "nerd" category. Games (video and tabletop), anime, music, art, sci-fi and fantasy stuff of all varieties. I enjoy a lot of RPG's, and some of my favorite game series include kingdom hearts, fire emblem, dark souls, and a fair few others. I play a lot of league at a fairly high level, but I'm not exactly proud of that because the game damages my sanity at times.
In general, I like to keep in shape, play games with friends, share music I think is great, watch tv/movies/anime (horror and psychological stuff especially), share memes, read, and do some amateur writing. I'm also rather intelligent/insightful and enjoy some nuanced discussion.
Location: Currently in central NJ, somewhere in the no man's land between nyc and philly. I'd prefer someone local who I can meet in person, but won't pass up someone great online who's willing to eventually relocate or that I can eventually relocate to.
Looking For: Monogamous relationship, ideally something serious. I feel that what I'd like the most is to find someone very special to me, who I can love with all my heart and spend my life with. It'd probably be my greatest joy in life to be able to do that, and have someone do so in return. That said, this is just a description of my ideal scenario, not what I'd expect out of every relationship.
Traits I'm Looking For: Kind, loving, trustworthy, understanding. Good sense of humor, emotionally intelligent, communicates well. In this regard, I wouldn't ask for anything I don't freely give. I also very fond of women who are dominant/aggressive in a playful way, as well as role reversal dynamics.
Personality: Generally cool headed, laid back, and kind. Introverted, but can be extroverted when I'm in my element and otherwise comfortable. Deceptively intelligent despite how incredibly basic my pictures look, but I also tend to clown around a lot so that's not easy to discern at first. I’m also very reasonable, with a strong preference for peacefully resolving issues, so you can expect very little to no drama and good communication. Oh, and according to a myers briggs test, I'm an INFJ?
Fun facts: I have a deep and sexy voice which many people don't expect, and a great many people tell me I should get into radio or voice acting. I'm also a bit dead on the inside but that's probably because there's a skeleton living inside me.
Partner preferences: I'm a big fan of goth/alt girls, as well as tomboys. I also really like short hair, usually between pixie and neck length, and have a sizable interest in women that are taller than me. But these aren't dealbreakers! As long as I find you attractive, everything is fine.
Dealbreakers/Requirements : Similar interests are pretty important for me. I tend to play a lot of games in my free time for entertainment, so having a partner that I can do that together with is my ideal. I do have a strong preference for body type that I unfortunately can't get past, with that preference being the thinner end of the spectrum when it comes to proportions/body fat. So basically petite/slim/fit/muscular.
PLEASE DON'T BE A SOCIOPATH, OR ACT LIKE ONE! If you have any questions about anything I mentioned (or didn't), just ask and I'll absolutely answer them for you. I'm very friendly so absolutely feel free to come talk to me.

2023.06.03 19:51 Party_Theme_7412 Irrelevance: Michaels brand
Anyone remember about 5 years ago Michaels was bragging that the company had so much positive brand recognition that they were the #20 ranked company in the USA?
Today they have disappeared and aren't even in the top 100 as of the new 2023 index (which is re-ranked from positive to negative impression). Hobby Lobby is the only top 100 brand in craft retailers and they're ranked #68. The #1 company is Patagonia, followed by Costco, John Deere, Trader Joe's, and Chick-fil-A.
Michaels has alienated so many customers (and former employees who would never return as a customer after working there) that they are disappearing entirely, despite the fact that they have added at least a hundred stores over the same time frame. Customers are forgetting that Michaels even exists faster than they can add new (unprofitable) small format stores that so far are universally hated by the customers who all want more choices not less. For decades when American customers thought Arts and Crafts they thought of Michaels. No more - now they think of Hobby Lobby as their FIRST CHOICE. (Hmm... Hobby Lobby promises "super prices and super selection"... The two areas Michaels is arguably destroying almost as fast as the employee experience)
The failure of Michaels falling behind Hobby Lobby is that in order to survive they have to become superior to them. Michaels arts and crafts core businesses were better in the past (remember that HL was mostly home decor, furniture, fabric and floral stems). But now that they're laser focused on moving to 100% Walmart/Kmart quality store brands in every product category, higher prices, terrible in stocks and zero service (no TM hours/self checkout only hours) they are becoming the gift that keeps on giving for Hobby Lobby. Even people who had moral objections to HL are obviously switching to shopping there because Michaels no longer has the selection, price, service or quality they expected.
The leadership of this company is leading it to the corporate graveyard. No Arts and Crafts retail experience amongst the overpaid leadership team. Horrific financial management. Buyers and merchandisers who continue to double down on a failed strategy change that is over 5 years old now (to replace the existing customers and embrace "makers" who own small Etsy type businesses - the folks who all know too much to shop at a Michaels). Nobody knows what Michaels means anymore, nobody knows or wants what they sell, and nobody wants to work there (except at the Vice President or above level where apparently no skill, experience, or success is required).
