Hi everyone,
Between police, forest service investigations, and individual sleuths, this case is completely cold. I was hoping some of you would take an interest in seeing if you could uncover anything online, due to a lack of any physical evidence whatsoever. Skip around the email, I know it's long. Just please don't ignore it. I just found out that one of the missing people was actually a close friend of mine's mom. I can't just let something like this be forgotten.
I live in northern california, near where this incident occurred. Over the course of living there, three people have gone missing specifically at a place called Donnell Vista. Outside of that, there have been multiple other instances of severe crimes, which are very uncommon in the area.
The Area: I am from Strawberry, CA (population 86 last time I checked). This is by Pinecrest, a big tourist attraction in the summer in Stanislaus forest which includes a lake. The closest major town nearby is Sonora, CA. For reference, only murder has occurred in this town since 2008. So why are people dying, missing, and murdered in a desolate area in the mountains above it?
The evidence: Outside of basic information about the incidents, the fires in the area have pretty much obliterated any hope for evidence. While there are unofficial suspects, that is literally all of the information gathered. I wish there were more online resources, but the town is so small, most information is just spread by word of mouth. Theories for their disapearances are suicide, mountain lion attacks, and murder.

While there being wildlife and occasionally extreme weather definitely play a part into the huge number of the disappearances and bodies, I think an even larger factor is the people currently residing in the area. Between cults, sex offenders, and drug rings, there is much more at play than the weather.

It is locally known that the elementary school was shut down due to the majority of those attending and teaching at the school (around 30 people in the end) were members of the Word of Life church. They had lots of guns, lots of conservative end-of-the-world ideas, and were disliked by the county sheriff's office. However, once the school was shut down, an influx of sex offenders moved into the area.

This bizarre clipping of our local newspaper details a whistleblower within the Word of Life community. This church is incredibly secluded and heavily funded. I only knew of one person that joined the church and she cut ties with everyone she knew shortly after.
Information about corruption:
To explain the corruption in the town, I will give an example of when I was carpooling with my boss. He is a local business owner. He also was a crazy driver, going 85 in a 55, thus we were pulled over by highway patrol. Once the officer comes up to the window, they recognize each other. The officer then says, "Sorry for the inconvenience, I didn't recognize your vehicle. Have a good day." In addition, a bar in the area openly served drugs at the bar, sometimes to forest service members. Drugs I concretely know being distributed and used there are cocaine and marijuana (before it was legal). Locals were warned not to wander into forests, not because of getting lost, many of us are expert hikers, but because of murder and drug related activity (farms, labs, etc.).

P.S. There is much more than disappearances that are strange about my town. Tunnels under cities, and the nearby airforce base both have interesting, but less substantiated claims made against them. Maybe it's because you practically have to force police to go up there. Maybe it's because it's a forest. Either way, someone needs to talk about what's going on.

Personal Information
Darvis Lee Jr was 36 years old around the time of his disappearance (October 2010). According to his mother, Lee lived a very hard life. According to The Union Democrat, when he was 12 years old, three men abducted him in Jamestown, drove him around for hours and then let him out ( I can't find if the three men were ever found and charged). In 2008, Lee made headlines again after he fell 100 feet into an abandoned gold mine near Sonora and was rescued after 32 hours. Lee eventually moved to Oregon with his wife, but eventually divorced her, and moved back to Sonora in 2010 shortly before his disappearance.
Disappearance
The last time Darvis was in contact with his family was October 18, and was last seen in Columbia California. He was reported missing October 24. Shortly after his disappearance, his vehicle was found three miles away in the Quail Mine Road area. Police searched for Lee, but the case quickly went cold, as no new information surfaced about Lee's whereabouts.
Discovery of Remains
In January, Lee's parents got a search party consisting of 60 people to look for Lee. After searching the surrounding areas, Lee's father discovered a jaw bone, located along Five Mile Creek, eight miles away from Lee's vehicle. An autopsy was done, and it was confirmed that the jaw bone belonged to Darvis. Unfortunately, despite this discovery, the case quickly went cold again. Despite finding a jawbone, no other remains were found. Lee's parents didn't give up though. Darvis's mom, Sandy, eventually told press that her primary focus was to find the rest of his remains so he could be given a proper burial. Because of this, she put a sign on her car that read "Darvis Lee Jr is still missing". After this sign was posted on her car, she received multiple calls and emails regarding Darvis, but one suspicious email stuck out the most. Sandy said that in this email, the person, quote, "emphatically told Sandy that Darvis’ body was in the Quail Mine area". She turned this email over to police, and an investigation began regarding Quail Mine and the individual who sent the email. The police never found a body though, and from what I could find, not much else was said about the person who sent the email, and they were never considered a suspect. It's not known how Darvis died, but Tuolumne County Sheriff Jim Mele suspects that "foul play may be involved", but there isn't enough evidence to confirm this.
Aftermath
To this day, this case remains cold. No one knows what happened to Darvis, but his parents still haven't given up. The family has offered large rewards for those who know any information on Darvis. So today's update, which comes from information from another meeting...
- I cannot emphasize enough that my previous post and this one are merely reports of TENTATIVE PLANS.
- Half Dome cables go up June 5th
- Campground listed in my first post seem to be the only ones planned for the initial opening phase. No word on when other campgrounds may open.
- YARTS (and NOT the in-Valley shuttle) will be operational. No word on any expanded schedules.
- Backcountry permits and camping will be allowed, however it is likely it will be through the online reservation system only and you PROBABLY won't be able to get a walk-up, day of permit.
- There is a possibility that actual locals (they did not define the exact definition of a local, but gateway communities probably) may be able to day-use the park without reservations. No guarantee!! Edit: This is in no way meant to say non-locales will be excluded. Only meant to convey that possibly locals will not be part of the day use quota system.
- Still seems likely they will allow someone to transit the park (simply drive through without out stopping) but there is concern as to how they do this without abuse.
Still absolutely no real clue as to how the entry reservations will work between people who are staying in the park (hotels, campgrounds, backcountry) versus the day use. There is talk of possibly QR codes that will be issued to overnight folks, so it seems possible (and contrary to my guessing in the previous post) that whatever method you use to make an overnight reservation will include your entry pass to the park. Again, you will still need to pay your regular entrance fees or show a parks pass to have those fees waived. So it's possible (likely?) that the only folks who need to make an online entry reservation will be the Day Use folks. We shall see....

Edit... First couple comments interpreted this post as meaning non-locals would be excluded from day use. This is ABSOLUTELY not the message I am trying to convey and to be frank, no way in hell that is what would happen.

OAKLAND, Calif. - A trial is beginning for a parolee charged with stabbing an 18-year-old woman to death on a California subway platform and wounding her sister, an attack that drew national attention.
Opening statements are expected to begin Wednesday in the trial against John Lee Cowell, 29, a transient with a history of violence accused of the July 2018 slaying of Nia Wilson and the attempted murder of her 26-year-old sister, Letifah Wilson.
