New used bike day - Santa Cruz Megatower C
Just purchased this turd of a bike over the weekend. This bike came across my facebook feed from a local seller. He was asking $1100 and we settled on $1000 after inspecting the bike. The seller had purchased the bike from a bike shop out west during a rental sale. It's been well used and not very well maintained.
The good: The drivetrain is in good working order albeit low end parts (Sram NX). Chain is well under 50% wear. The suspension is fully functional. The dropper post is fully functional. The brakes are working. The wheels are true.
The bad: The frame is littered with scratches and scuffs. The paint is faded and the clear coat is peeling along the top tube. All of the bearings were shot. They looked as if they had never seen the light of day since install. They were rusted, crunchy, and packed full of dirt and sand. No amount of cleaning and grease helped revive them. The tires were dry rotted on the sidewalls and side knobs. The cranks look like someone took a metal grinder to them. The handlebars and grips look like they've been beaten with a hammer.
Thankfully most of the major online bike shops were doing memorial day sales so I was able to pick up some replacement parts at decent prices. Jenson was doing a sale on Maxxis tires so those have been ordered. I was lucky to find another sale on facebook for a like new Sram X1 carbon crankset for $150. Additional parts on order include new carbon handlebars, grips, stealth thru axles, seat, fork decals, and bottom bracket. I also ordered a full pivot bearing kit, new lower link, chain guide and headset bearings. I'll be doing a basic suspension service just to be certain that's all good.
I've never owned a big travel bike and exclusively ride XC. My plan for this bike is to take it to the local bike park a few times and bring it with me on some trips to Marquette and Copper Harbor MI. If I find I dont really care for that riding style, I'll sell it near the end of summer (likely for a net loss). So far I've just been enjoying tinkering and fixing things on the bike. When its all finished I'll be about $700 out of pocket for parts and service (I'll be taking it to the LBS for the pivot bearing replacement).

2023.05.31 21:02 obra_de_arte [Michigan] Handicap accessibility new priority for Muskegon beaches, parks

MUSKEGON, MI – Improving access to beaches and park amenities is among the top recreation priorities for Muskegon, starting with a favorite Muskegon Lake beach.
The city is experimenting with a new mat to help those with mobility restrictions to access the Harbour Towne beach. If it’s successful, it could be replicated elsewhere.
A beach wheelchair that also floats in the water is coming soon to Pere Marquette Park where users will be able to check it out for free.
A new handicap-accessible playground at a city park is a prototype for more to come.

2023.05.31 05:57 pettymisdemeanor Joe Pera should appear as a new, recurring character on Season 3

Everyone on this sub has already had their hearts warmed by Somebody Somewhere. Joe Pera, for those who have seen his show, is highly adjacent to this show with respect to how it makes one feel (really good, warm and fuzzy, and it makes you laugh a lot). If you haven't seen it, check it out.
So what if Darlene, the music teacher who passed away, is replaced by Joe Pera (a music teacher in Marquette, MI on his own show) and takes off from there.
I'm imagining a scene (hopefully many scenes) that contain Fred Rococo and Joe Pera having an earnest moment but also riding on a K State themed party bus together.
These worlds must collide!
How does one pass such ideas on to the writers/producers/people involved?

2023.05.25 16:44 UPdrafter906 Copper Island on the map!

I don’t often see the label Copper Island used on maps to represent the portion of the Keweenaw Peninsula North of Houghton.
Come to think of it I’m not sure I’ve seen it anywhere but a few rando historical documents like letters. I like using the term because it will often provoke a smile or at least a double take.
I came upon it here using an climate record tool which credited OpenStreetMap as a contributor so maybe it’s a tag added by their users? It only appears within certain zoom limits when it would be appropriate.
Where else have you seen the label Copper Island used? Do you ever use it? How do people respond to you when they hear it?

2023.05.20 22:08 casperthegoldfish Advice on 7 day summer trip

Hi! I am doing a bucket list trip to the UP, and am a bit overwhelmed but very, very excited! It's a 7 day trip, and I fly into Traverse City in mid-July.
I know my must-dos are:
  1. Chapel Rock loop
  2. Marquette
  3. Keweenaw Peninsula and Copper Harbor
I don't really know how to split up the days! I also won't be camping, so will have to stay in hotels etc.
So far, I have this completely tentative plan:
Tuesday: The flight lands at 11 AM in Traverse City. I was thinking I would drive to St. Ignace and spend the night (is this a good idea or should I head somewhere else? I saw someone mention Paradise, MI and Whitefish Point. Should I just go there instead of St. Ignace?
Wed: Stay in Marquette and venture around
Thurs: Stay in Marquette and venture around
Fri: Stay in Keweenaw Peninsula and venture around
Sat: Stay in Keweenaw Peninsula and venture around
Sun: Stay in Porcupine Mountains and venture around (I'm not sure if I should skip this?)
Mon: Road trip to Traverse and spend the day/evening there
Tues: Flight leaves early AM
I love cute, small towns and great views. Any advice on splitting up the trip would be appreciated!

2023.05.17 18:34 vwqibojda What is a reasonable price for a house that has one bathroom? (1,000-2,000 square ft)

Background info: My fiancé and I have been looking for houses for the past few months, and our max budget is 220k. We are first time home buyers and would be using FHA. We are looking in the Muskegon/ Norton shores MI area.
I know this is a pretty broad question and a lot goes into pricing of a house, but i was just wondering (in general) how much do one bathroom houses typically go for i my area? And what’s a reasonable price for one, assuming that there are no other major issues with the home and it’s in a “nicer” area? I’ve done research and can see that it brings the value of the home down. And tbh, i don’t want to buy a house with only one bathroom if there is not extra money for renovations to add another one because of this, even though it’s only going to be me and my fiancé. My fiancé doesn’t care as much about having 2 bathrooms, so he keeps showing me mediocre houses that are pushing 180-200k with only one bathroom and i personally feel like that’s an outrageous price and not worth it… Am i expecting too much for our budget, or does anytime else agree with me?
I feel like our budget is reasonable but we have been struggling to find any decent houses in our price range… And it’s not like we’re looking in a super nice area either, Muskegon is pretty ghetto in some parts. I know the housing market is bad rn, but it doesn’t make sense to me why these one bathroom houses are going for so high…
Here is an example of what I’m talking about- https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1474-N-Roberts-Rd-Muskegon-MI-49445/24281146_zpid/?utm_campaign=iosappmessage&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=txtshare
Any insight is appreciated, thanks :)

2023.05.15 12:44 Complaint-Expensive Please write my friend, Chris

This is my friend, Chris, who is currently incarcerated in Michigan. The poor guy is going out of his mind with boredom, has zero approved visitors, and is desperate to find some pen pals to talk to.
His mom reached out to me a month or so ago, and asked if she could give him my contact info, because all he had to talk to is her. And, while he's stoked to have me now? I can tell he really needs more social interaction.
Please help me make sure my kind, loving friend doesn't get beaten up too badly by the prison system. The library in his facility hasn't been open since the beginning of covid, and I don't want him to lose his brain, ya feel me?
Chris' contact info is as follows:
Christopher Elderkin, #713357 Marquette Branch Prison 1960 U.S. Hwy. 41 South Marquette, MI 49855
You can also use this same information to find him on JPay.com
Everybody does something stupid. Chris? Just managed to be really stupid about his stupid thing. The long and short of it? Is that something that should've stayed between family ended up in the court system, and I still don't think that's reason enough for my friend to feel this isolated and alone. So, if anyone can reach out to Chris? We'd both appreciate it.

Training

To pre-empt all of this, I started a weight loss journey at the beginning of last year, at 230 and now I'm at 180, so 50 pounds down. This race is also the first race I'm running this year that is the same as last year, so I'll have a direct 1:1 comparison to see how much I really have progressed. That strava link for last year's race is here: https://www.strava.com/activities/7103828791, and my time was 1:48 at 8:35 pace.
I ran a half marathon two months ago at 7:31 pace for a final time of about 1:37, on a somewhat hilly course in 15 degree temps and 15mph winds. Since then, my hope coming into this 20K was to run at 7:15 pace, and to finish in under 1:30. I added in an additional speed workout, got some Vaporflys (only cause they were on sale for $135), and started running 35-45 mpw before tapering the last week.

Pre-race

Did my shakeout run the night before, then on the morning of the race got my coffee, oatmeal, morning poop, warming up and stretching. Legs were feeling the best they've felt in a while so I was excited, but still nervous. The weather was in the low to mid 40s and a slight drizzle, but warm enough for me to be out in split shorts and t shirt.

Race

First 5K - 21:59
The packs started forming, but I was pretty much alone. The pack ahead of me was around 6:55 pace and I didn't want to blow up. I was worried from my first two miles that I would not be able to keep it up, but I was feeling really good over the first 5k, and I was slowly catching up to somebody who fell back from the pack ahead.
Second 5K - 22:03; First 10K - 44:02
I eventually got right behind the guy ahead of me and just chilled partly as a psychological battle to have him worry but also to stop myself from speeding up too much. He eventually let me pass him and I continued feeling pretty good to finish out the first half.
Third 5K - 21:50
I get passed soon by a different person, but stay decently close, and another person ahead of both of us runs off the course to a park bathroom that I'm not sure was even open at this time of year. Nothing exciting happens really until the turn around and the person not far ahead of me seems to hit a bit of a brick wall and I am able to pass him and try to hold that position.
Fourth 5K - 21:07; Second 10K - 42:07
This is where my legs started feeling heavier, but at the same time I knew I only had 5K to go. The first two miles are pretty easy, but the last mile and a half is decently hilly. Each mile I go I am surprised to look at my watch and see a sub 7 minute run. Finally, with the last half mile to go, I see a guy in my sights who looks like he's bonked and is going quite slowly. I start booking it, and I soon realize I can overtake him, hopefully giving me a better chance to get a top 3 spot in my age group. I start to overtake him but he hears my panting, looks behind himself, and starts to also book it, and he ended up winning out. After chatting with him directly after finishing I asked him his age after jokingly and he let me know he's 47, so it didn't make a difference except without that I would not have come up under 1:27.

Post-race

I was absolutely ecstatic to finish under 1:27. In just a year I have taken my 20K time down 22 minutes, 1:35 per EVERY MILE down. I am destroying my goals and my next big goal is to get a sub 1:30 half marathon at the end of July, but between now and then I have two trails races and two 5Ks. I don't have huge goals for the trail races other than using them as preparation for my first 50K in the fall, but I am hoping to go under 20 minutes even though in my brain that sounds like an impossible thing. And eventually I want to qualify for Boston, but that's a multi year goal for me.
This time would have gotten me 3rd overall in last year's inaugural race, but this got me 8th overall and 5th in the 30-39 age group (4th technically cause the overall winner was also 30-39). I guess that just means I'm going to have to train even harder for next year.

2023.05.04 16:00 Dry_Mathematician547 Moving from Michigan, how much of a shock and I in for?

Title says it, specifically Ann Arbor and Detroit MI.
For further background, my girlfriends family is from NH so we're really excited for the move potentially to get near her family. The pay is enough to justify the job switch and dropping income tax for both of us will more than make up for the property tax increase.
My job will be in Hookset and girlfriend needs to get to Boston Logan about once/week for her work so we're thinking Bedford will be ideal for a potential forever home spot to split commutes.
She grew up upstate NH so the newfound space is going to be great on her end. I grew up in Orange County in CA so it's going to be a learning experience for me although I was stationed in Saratoga Springs NY in the Navy and loved it there. Hoping the ManchesteNashua areas will have similar experiences to offer (minus the the horse racing people, holy moneybags!). Politically we're both fairly moderate, might lean a bit left but not by much. How much of a shock am I in for? Ny happy space is urban density with 3 grocery stores in a couple mile radius and half a dozen coffee shops to choose from, hers' is having that a 10 minute drive away with a few acres of quiet at home. Both of us greatly value good hiking and outdoors nearby.
For activities/friends, having the mountains so close to the North is going to be awesome. We're planning to join multiple outdoor and 20s/30s Meetup groups when we get in town to make new friends.
And if you've got time, we're visiting next week. Any recommendations to get to know the area on a quick two day trip? Parks, coffee shops, breweries, typically hangout spots are all appreciated.

EDIT (Bedford, NH vs Royal Oak, MI COL): A lot of folks are under the impression cost of living is going to spike massively coming from Michigan to New Hampshire. We've already run those numbers, it won't, at least not for us in our situation. In case you're curious, here's our overall results comparing my home in Royal Oak to a comparable home in Bedford using their current Zillow Estimates. All results are rounded out: Income Tax Savings: $13,000/yr (assuming our income)
Sales Tax Savings: $3,200/yr (assuming our income)
Property Tax Increase: $1,200/yr (assuming comparable home)
Principal/Interest Increase:$1,700/yr (assuming comparable home)
Utilities Increase: $1,800/yr (Your gas rates really are quite high, electric is a bit higher)
After tax savings just from moving to NH not including the salary bump: $11,500/year (plenty to have enough margin to say we're going to come out ahead, also this doesn't include my salary bump)
