Musty smell from hvac

My wk2 has a musty smell from the hvac but only when the auto stop start kills the engine at a light, when the engine kicks back on it goes away, maybe the cabin air filter?

2023.06.01 11:48 deluxe150021 [2023 ES Review] Today I took my 2013 F Sport GS in for servicing and was given a 2023 F Sport ES300h as a courtesy car. Here are my thoughts..
| I was lucky enough to be given a brand new Jan 2023 ES300h F Sport today as a loaner whilst my 2013 F Sport GS (non hybrid) is in for annual servicing. This is the latest model with the new touch screen and I thought it may be helpful to offer a comparison for any MK4 GS owners thinking of upgrading. - Build Quality. The first thing I noticed was that this car, despite being built in Belgium and not Japan like my GS (See sticker plate picture), does feel like a proper Lexus. Bank vault feeling upon closing the door with the quality of thunk you'd expect. Highly insulated. Very nice quality damping on all compartment doors and switch gear. Superb attention to detail like the LC door handles, brushed aluminium backing to the door and dash controls etc. No interior rattles whatsoever but then again neither does my GS despite closing in on 80k miles.
- Drive Train. The next thing I noticed was the surprising coarseness of the 4 cylinder engine when running compared to my non hybrid GS. There is noticeable noise and vibration even when warmed up that almost made me wonder if there was an issue with the car. However seeing as this barely has 3k miles on it and drives like a dream I suspect not. What is more likely is that I've been spoiled by the Petrol V6 in my GS which is absolutely silent on tickover and barely audible below 2k rpm. Of course the engine is not running the majority of the time with this hybrid ES but I think anyone coming from a 6 or 8 cylinder engine is going to be surprised at how unrefined the 4 pot is when running. On the move the drive is seamless and extremely easy going like all Lexus products. The adaptive Cruise and lane keep assist worked flawlessly on my return motorway journey and really did give the feeling of the car almost driving itself. The system seems to be extremely well sorted now and superior in operation to my MK4 GS.
- Ride quality. This car is an F Sport the same as my GS. However. The ride, whilst very good for a "sporty" model on low profile tyres, cannot hold a candle to my F Sport GS on stock rims. Maybe it's the adaptive dampers, but the ride on my GS has always been one of my favourite things about the car. It has a magic carpet float that I've only otherwise experienced in air suspension equipped vehicles. Bumps in the road are so well damped that they rarely bother you. This ES absolutely does not do as good a job at smoothing out the road. Bumps are felt more. And whilst the ride isn't anything like as bad as an M Sport BMW. It definitely feels closer to something German than Japanese. Firm but compliant.
- Refinement. I would say it's neck and neck for road noise and overall NVH whilst on the move between this and my GS. At speeds above 30mph the refinement is on a par. At low speeds this ES does seem quieter when running on the hybrid battery due to the total absence of engine noise. With the engine running. It's worse than my GS.
- Interior Tech. This is where my GS really begins to show it's age. The digital F Sport gauges and large, crisp touch screen feel very up to date. The touch screen is responsive and unfussy in its layout. Everything is located where it should be and the the new infotainment is simply a joy to use especially as someone coming from the Mouse/Touchpad. Interestingly I actually felt like the reverse camera in this ES is worse than the one in my GS. The field of view is identical and whilst the resolution is mildly increased, the refresh rate is actually halved from my GS. To me a reverse camera should be running at 50-60hz to give you the best response time for judging distance. The camera in this appears only marginally clearer yet running at half this refresh rate. This ES only comes with the stock Stereo whereas my GS is blessed with the Mark Levinson upgrade. Nevertheless the stock Stereo performs ok provided you crank the Treble and Bass to get rid of some of the boxyness. It will never sound as good as the ML audio in my GS so not a fair comparison.
- Practicality. I am genuinely shocked how much more interior space this car has over my GS despite being a touch smaller in dimensions. The MK4 GS I have always found to be bizarrely cramped in the rear although the boot is thankfully enormous. With this ES the boot appears a very similar size but the rear seat area has significantly more room in every dimension. An adult cannot sit behind me with my driving position in the GS. In this ES I almost feel like I'm in a limo by comparison. The doors have a nice high shoulder line which gives you the cocooned feeling yet somehow the cabin feels less cramped in every regard. Both cars have a through loading hatch. A clear winner for the ES here.
So in summary, this is a LOVELY car. One that anybody should be proud to have on their driveway. However in order to upgrade I would need to spend £20k on top of the price of my current GS. And given how surprisingly well it holds up to this brand new ES in several key areas I'm not sure I'll be making the upgrade anytime soon. Of course I know fuel costs won't even be in the same league though. Any MK4 GS owners who have made the upgrade care to chime in? submitted by deluxe150021 to Lexus [link] [comments] |
2023.06.01 11:33 votnus24 Service B6
Hi, so the car shows service B6 is due. 10 000 km prior i did an oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter and cabine filter change. My mechanic says, because i don't have a lot of kilometers its fine to do only an oil change. I've checked and the filters don't have to be replaced as often.
Can skipping the replacement of these filters be a potential headache?

2023.06.01 06:56 car_civteach20 Wiring a cable along the seams
Hi, I have a Honda CRV and I tried to tuck the wire along the seams. I did not pry open any panel, but shoved it as much as possible. The only thing I removed is the weather sealing.
I saw some videos where the person removed the plastic panel (on the passenger side, above the airbag ) a little bit to shove it and I wasn't sure about that.
When I tried, there was enough gap between the windshield and the plastic. Is it safe to do this with respect to the air bag i.e. no prying opening anything, but shoving between the gaps)?
Thanks.

2023.06.01 05:48 austindlawrence 2010 Toyota Prius Oil Change
So I got an oil change since it was half off for the day. (Valvoline) And obviously when a company does some sort of promotion like this you are to expect them to try and sell you a bunch of extra stuff. But I had the guy try and sell me a $50 cabin air filter, but that wasn’t even the craziest part, another worker lied about on of my lights being out after getting home and inspecting it myself.
Then the guy that tried to sell me the over priced filter tried to sell me a “Power Steering Fluid Change” ($130). Now I’m no expert, but I am pretty sure the 2010 Toyota Prius is an EPS system, correct? I even asked the guy about it and he said that my vehicle had it “sealed”. I wasn’t doing it anyway, so I looked everywhere online and still can’t find anything about getting your power steering fluid changed on my Prius.
Does anyone know anything about this? Or was this place literally just trying to rob the blind on their oil change “sale”?!

2023.06.01 03:43 bulletbh 2019 Honda Pilot engine running rough
I have a 2019 Honda Pilot and the engine is running a little rough when idling and at low speeds. At higher speeds it seems to even out but at idle or starting to accelerate the RPM randomly jumps up by about 200 or 300 RPMs and then drops back after about a second. I am not sure what would cause this but suspect it is something with the air or fuel mixture or throttle control. I cannot find if this vehicle has a TPS or not. It recently had an oil change and I changed to air filter about 6000 miles ago. As of today it is starting to get worse. RPMs jumping up more often. Any ideas what would cause this?

I have a 2013 Honda CR-V EX 2.4 I4 AWD where the AC suddenly stopped blowing cold and now is only blowing warm air. There was initially a strong chemical odor when the AC stopped working. I've also observed that the radiator and AC fans are not turning but the engine is not showing that it's running hot on the temp gauge, nor is the check engine light on or any codes showing on an OBD2 scanner. Looking for troubleshooting steps at this point. Thanks for answering.

2023.06.01 00:31 Jay2KWinger Account of a Parley
The little cluster of rocks wasn't much, but the cabling and paneling and sundries that had lashed them all together marked them as being a part of the asteroid belt known as the Reef. It was a nest of scum, the sorts that had been banned or kicked out of the Tangled Shore, that even The Spider didn't want to associate with. Because it was where the worst sorts filtered down to, the locals called the area "The Trench." Awoken enforcers never went near it, unless they had numbers and firepower at their backs.
In recent months, the Trench had become more crowded. Ships of all stripes had parked around it-- Eliksni ketches and Cabal cruisers, Awoken galliots and Arcadian shuttles. The makes meant little, as they were frequently stolen. The livery and banners they flew all varied, but there were two specific ones worth noting. One was blue and bore a sigil of a broken sword stabbed into a stylized crown, the other black and portrayed a stylized Eliksni skull with an upper jaw full of jagged teeth. The banners of House Salvation and the pirate lord Gresdin Sawtooth.
A skiff dropped out of a short-range jump and docked itself between a sloop and a cobbled-together transport, both of which had their old livery scored and scratched away. As the skiff's captain disembarked, he could see that crews were already at work painting Sawtooth's standard onto them. A vandal stepped out in front of him, crashing into him, but the vandal took one look and thought better of finishing their scowl, instead scuttling away to another ship.
Similar reactions followed, even from a few of the Legionless Cabal that plodded the walkways of the Trench. But soon enough, the skiff captain approached the Trench's topmost suite of cabins. Two Eliksni guards glared at him, but he stared them down in kind, until one turned and barked into the cabin, "Tell them the Technomancer's back."
But the Technomancer-- a Fallen reaver named Bansiks-- raised his bulky mechanical arm and shoved the two House Salvation Elites out of his way as he barged into the cabin. His synthesized voice rasped as he approached the high table. "Lord Gresdin," he called.
Several other figures were clustered around the table, turning toward him as he approached. One was just Kalsek, one of Gresdin's lieutenants, bristling with indignation-- but not just from Bansiks's interruption, the Technomancer could tell. Kalsek was more angry about the two interlopers at the table. Both were Eliksni, and one towered over all present at the table, wearing scarred armor and clutched in his lower hands was a heavily modified forge hammer, the head of which glowed with Scorch energy. He stood behind an older Eliksni seated at the table, but Bansiks could see the lightly-armored elder's own scarred body beneath the faded, priestly robes he wore. Both wore the blue banner of House Salvation.
He knew them both by reputation. The giant was, despite his size, the lesser of the two, a retainer to the elder. One of the many outcasts of the scattered House of Scars, he had become a reaver in his way, taking part in pirate raids and eventually seeking more glory for himself in the Last Attempt at conquering the human City. He had been captured along with many others and languished in the Prison of Elders, but had escaped along with so many others when the Prison had fallen, and eventually came to House Salvation, eager to smash the wretches that had defeated his people and imprisoned him. But in the end, Brekkis the Breaker was simply a brute to his core.
On the other hand, the elder, Morsik, was a former archon of a lesser House that had long ago fractured and fallen apart, one who had suffered much abuse in the time since, but largely at the hands of Lightbearers and the Reef folk. Drawn to Eramis by the promise of a reborn Riis, he had become a very effective recruiter for his new House, speaking in an almost hypnotic fashion as he whipped up the furor and fervor for revenge against the Lights for the pain they'd all experienced. It worked so well, it was little wonder why they called him the Demagogue.
Seated at the midle of the table, opposite the entry to the chamber, was a broad-shouldered, barrel-chested Eliksni. A bandolier strapped across his chest had several Shock pistols at hand, and though they were blocked by the table, Bansiks knew there was an array of swords and knives and similar bladed weaponry around his waist. His Ether-mask had a twice-bifurcated crest, two flanges of which twisted forward and down, almost like tusks, while the other two were bent into horns. The front of his mask had its grill wrought to resemble a mouthful of jagged fangs. He wore his own black standard, with one upper hand resting on the grip of his namesake sword, a zweihander with a jagged edge. Gresdin Sawtooth, pirate lord of the Trench, looked up at him.
"Bansiks," Gresdin acknowledged. But then he turned back to the House Salvation envoys. "For all she demands of me and mine, Eramis could not come herself, and sends you instead?"
"Eramiskel," Brekkis growled.
But the pirate lord slapped his palm on the table. "Not my Kell," he snarled back. "She disrespects me like this, she does not get that wisp of respect from me in turn."
The brute glowered down at him. "No one--"
"No one sends a thug like you unless they're trying to send a message," Gresdin interrupted. He turned his gaze instead to Morsik, dismissing the retainer immediately. "The Shipstealer expects much from me, and all the other crews that berth in my Trench." A rasping snarl rattled in his throat. "Running down and looking for old relics, but what does she offer in return? A vague threat that we will be allowed to live?"
"Eramiskel has been given purpose." Morsik's voice was soft, quiet, the kind that forced the listener to strain to hear, and to thus better absorb his words. "To revisit the pain our people have suffered upon those who inflicted it."
"Lightbearers," Brekkis snarled.
"You know better than others, Lord Gresdin," the Demagogue continued, "that our people are plagued by weakness. Those with the means to lift us up simply won't make the decisions necessary to shape a place for us to live. No one, apart from Eramiskel."
"She wants trinkets that grant their bearers power," Bansiks rumbled, and raised a relic in his hand, setting it on the table in front of the pirate lord. "Iriks is dead," he told him. Brekkis made a move to reach for the lantern-like relic, but the Technomancer's bulky synthetic arm twitched up and extruded a blade that touched the brute's throat. "That's not for you."
Morsik's expression did not change, but there was the impression of a frown. "Eramiskel has asked for the relics."
"This is not the new Riis that Eramis ruled," Gresdin picked up the relic and passed it to Kalsek. "You are in the Trench, and this is my domain. Not even the Lightbearers dare come here. What makes you think you can make demands of me?"
The Demagogue placed two hands on the table as he ponderously rose, his scarred, aged body trembling some as he did so. Brekkis moved to assist him, but Morsik waved him off. The elder Eliksni stood with an almost regal air, and then slapped a hand down on the table. Cobalt blue ice crystals rippled outward from where he struck, spreading across the table, and then the floor, flash-freezing Kalsek in place, relic included. As the pirate lord bellowed in fury, Brekkis slapped aside Bansiks's blade and grabbed him by the throat.
"You think you have power," Morsik murmurred, as he lifted his hand, letting the pirate see the Splinter embedded in the gauntlet he wore. "But you do not. And there is a power beyond even this, which eclipses even the Light."
To the former archon's surprise, however, Gresdin began laughing. "Your House kneels to the Black Gale. But the Gale is not here--"
At which point, red SIVA clouds snaked out of Bansiks's gauntlet, winding around Brekkis and pinning him to the floor with hardened cables of metal. As this happened, the Technomancer raised his synthetic arm and the blade unfolded as the barrel of a cannon emerged from it. Morsik stared this down, raising his hands carefully. The Stasis crystals receded, Kalsek staggering as he was freed, and Gresdin arose from his chair, hefting his namesake sword to one shoulder with a speed that belied its weight.
"--and Gresdin Sawtooth bows to no one."
Morsik inclined his head thoughtfully. "How would you like to strike down the Reef folk?"
The Lord of the Trench paused, lowering his sword briefly, though not fully. "Explain."
"The man-folk and their Lightbearers have plagued our people since the moment we first reached this star. But only one of their Houses has ever enslaved Eliksni." The Demagogue spread his hands. "The House of Sov." Gresdin stared him down, but then glanced at Bansiks, gesturing subtly with a spare hand. The Technomancer lowered his cannon, but left Brekkis pinned under SIVA tendrils. With a nod, Morsik continued, "The apologists will say the broken Weavers swore oaths, but oaths made under duress are not binding, as they proved later when they rebelled."
"A rebellion that got them all killed," Kalsek pointed out.
"Because the man-folk will never let Eliksni live unless they kneel to their Lightbearers and to the Traitor Machine," Morsik spat. "If we start to rise back up, they send their ghouls to slaughter us."
Gresdin grunted again. "No one dares attack the Trench. Even the Lightbearers stay away." But he looked over as Bansiks shook his head.
"The Lightbearers have pirate hunters now," he reported. "Not only have they taken out several of the ketchkilers, they are hunting relics like that," he indicated the lantern in Kalsek's hands.
Gresdin chewed on that thought for a moment before Morsik folded his lower hands over his belly, the other set behind his back. "The relics have power. The old crews knew this." He eyed the pirate lord. "You broke from your House because your Kell was weak. House Blades was renowned for its prowess in battle, but Yovariskel had been too cautious to join the Last Attempt, and Koussakskel is too cowardly to seek the glory you crave. You earned your place as Lord of the Trench as befits your old House's ways.
"You have supporters in House Blades," Morsik continued. "They grumble and whisper and want their glories, but Koussakskel holds them back. A bold move on your part-- scouring the Reef of House Sov-- would galvanize them. They would flock to your banner. And Eramiskel would honor your deeds, and offer you pride of place as High Baron in her House, as admiral of Salvation's ketch fleet."
The pirate lord mulled this over, while Kalsek argued, "Why should Lord Gresdin lower himself to serve a kell who failed her House? The Lights defeated her, her House was scattered." But the expression on Gresdin's face told that he'd already taken the bait, and now the Demagogue just needed to reel him in.
"Perhaps her House had been weak," Morsik suggested. "And with you at her side to assure the strength of her followers..."
Bansiks looked at Gresdin, who regarded the elder with a long stare. Then, with a ponderous move, he planted the end of his jagged zweihander on the floor, and nodded to the cyborg Eliksni. The Technomancer stepped back from Brekkis as the cabling binding him down dissolved back into clouds of nanites, which withdrew into the tanks on his back.
"Then let us speak," Gresdin Sawtooth smiled, "of what your Kell will do for me."

2023.05.31 22:24 F00FlGHTER 2002 3.8l Camaro not blowing cold air from AC
This is a 134a fixed orifice tube system as far as I know. It's been many months if not a year since I've used the AC so I can't say for certain whether this was gradual or sudden, but if I had to lean one way I'd say that maybe the AC has been slowly getting less cool over the years? Although, it could just be my imagination. But it was definitely not working even when traveling 75+ mph down the highway. I picked up a gauge manifold, here's my observations:
- Static pressure was about 70-80psi at ~70°F ambient and >40% relative humidity.
- Started the engine but didn't let it get to operating temperature before I turned on the AC (max fan with recirculation), not sure how much that matters.
- The compressor immediately started running. Low side was steady at about 30psi so pretty normal and high side went up to about 100psi, so definitely on the low side.
- As the engine warmed up the high side pressure started climbing. Meanwhile the AC compressor has been operating non-stop.
- I felt the high side coming out of the condenser, it felt quite warm, while the low side coming in/out of the evaporator felt ice cold. The accumulator was not cold though. The high side pressure continued to climb, past 150 as the engine came up to operating temperature.
- I was puzzled since the pressures seemed good but still was not getting any cold air out of the vents, they were blowing 70°F air. Compressor still running non-stop.
- Thought maybe the temp knob was the problem (I assume it's a potentiometer) so I turned it to heat and it immediately started blowing hot air. Now I'm really puzzled.
- I continued letting it run and the high side pressure continued to climb above 250psi so I thought maybe there was a blockage in the orifice tube.
- I turned the AC off and the pressures rapidly equalized to ~80psi so probably no blockage? Compressor had been running non-stop the whole time.
I think that was everything I observed. Only thing I can think of is maybe the cabin air filter is full of crap so I'm gunna start taking apart my dash to get to that. The fan on max was blowing air at a good clip though so I doubt that's the problem. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks!

2023.05.31 22:22 Normal_Garlic4380 Car shaking when idling/stopped
My 2011 Honda CRV was stopped at a stoplight today and shook kind of like when ur rpm drops. It rocked back and forth about 10 times but when I started driving again, it stopped. My car has already been vibrating at idle which I thought was normal but nothing like the shaking I get now.
I just replaced the air filters and might change the spark plugs, last owner replaced it at 90k, currently at 105k. Any ideas to what it could be so I can take it in to a mechanic with a general idea of the problem?

I change my cabin air filter frequently. After about 3-4 months, the air blowing out has a nasty vinegar type smell that is especially strong right when I turn the AC on. Does anyone know what's causing this? Am I stuck having to change my filter this often to avoid the smell? It usually goes away a few days after filter replacement.

2023.05.31 20:43 jmw27403 I work with idiots
So, we have a tech that IMHO we've only kept simply because we need the bodies. He suggested a cabin air filter on this Silverado. Listed it on the check sheet as dirty/pm. Filter was sold. This particular truck doesn't have one. It has a slot for a space to cut out and add on. This particular truck was the lowest level trim. The tech came to me and said hey this truck has a spot to cut out for a filter. My response was hey go talk to the shop owner, I have customers up front and was on the way to the bathroom. 30 minutes later another tech comes up to me and said hey bro you gotta look at this. So I go out there to see what has happened. This idiot has decided instead of talking to shop owner, or even the dishonest but still better option of throwing the filter away and claiming he did it. He took a flat tip screw driver and hammer to the punch out for the filter. To add the filter the blower unit (the entire air plenum underneath the dash) should be removed. Then a dremel or similar tool used to cut out the punch out. Then a kit from GM is then installed. By using the screwdriver he cracked the plastic. The customer is of course from out of town, he was helping another site for day. But now we own this guy an explanation as to why we tried to sell a cabin filter on a truck that didn't have one. Then explain why there's a hole in his blower unit. I don't know how to explain this and save face..... what the fuck do I do..... what the fuck do I do..... WHAT THE FUCK DO I DO???

2023.05.31 18:54 Guilty_Introduction3 Need help replacing the cabin filter
Hi! I'm replacing the cabin airfilter of my Fiesta from 2011 (pre facelift version).
I'm having some trouble trying to figure out in which direction the arrows on the filter should be pointing.
The previous filter had arrows pointing towards the nose of the car (away from the interior). Is this because the air ducts simply flow this direction or was the previous filter placed incorrectly?
I'd be more than thankful if someone has the answer for me!

My engine warning light comes on, and I lose power. If I put my foot on the floor there’s no reaction and car pretty much stuck at like 20.
I had it in they done some sort of electrical thing (can’t remember), and a ‘DPF regeneration’. Two days later warning light back on.
This time heating treated, air filter replaced. 3 weeks later, engine light on.
I turn car off for 10-20 minutes and I can drive for say 30 mins maybe and hour, if I drive like a 70 year going no faster than I absolutely have to… but inevitably it’ll lose power again.

Manual, 50k miles, in pristine condition. What’s been replaced: brake pads and rotors, clutch, clutch pressure plate, clutch slave cylinder, outside mirror, light bulbs, cabin air filter.
Tires rotated and oil change 4 times.
What’s been checked: steering, suspension, engine/powertrain module, body electrical system.
I just had my 2005 Golf’s automatic transmission go out with only 60k miles on it, I’m upset, and not thinking clearly.

2023.05.31 16:32 desi2923 dealer told me i need $1700 worth of work. 2nd opinion said i don't need anything. I figured it might be in the middle?
2018 Mazda 3, 50,000 KM on it. Dealership told me i needed the following work done (conveniently, it was my first oil change after my warranty expired). All prices include tax
Rear Brakes - $600
Drive Belt & Tensioner - $670
Tire Alignment - $170
Engine Air Filter - $40
Transmission Fluid - $180
Total cost is about $1660, so i took to a local guy who's extremely well reviewed for a 2nd opinion. He was on vacation but i asked the staff to thoroughly review the car. They told me there were no issues and they had nothing to sell to me.
I was very surprised - while I figured the dealer was trying to rip me off, i thought there would still be some minor things. For example, I've never replaced the cabin air filter. And I let my steering wheel go on my empty straight residential road for a few seconds and noticed the car was tilting to the right - not sure if that's a tire alignment issue. And, after a recent car wash I noticed there's a small amount of rust on my trunk lid (my car gets dirty from outdoor parking so i never take a deep look until i have it cleaned)
Should i trust the 2nd opinion? Or am i overreacting?
