I've been in the home-buying process for the past month and have struggled to find something that checks all the boxes. I got close to closing on one home until the inspection came back revealing big-ticket repairs that would need to be done. Having gone through most of the home buying process (offer was accepted just under ask, <5 days after listing), I'm taking a step back to try and assess the market as a whole. Most of the houses I've seen are marked up wildly from their previous sale price as recent as 6 months ago, yet many are sitting on the market. Are the well-maintained, well-priced houses flying off the shelves? Are they just not coming onto market? Any insight on local trends and insight would be greatly appreciated.

The Photo

My head was spinning.
The polaroid photo of Jared and I was sitting on my laptop. Less than a day after I received his emotional plea to investigate a haunting at his home. It was impossible. The whole thing was impossible! I don’t believe in ghosts, and that photo hasn’t seen the outside of a box in years.
I ripped open my storage closet. Underneath many boxes in the back corner was the small pink shoebox, where I kept all the mementos from college. I tore off the lid and rooted through the contents. The box contained many polaroids of friends, parties, everyday items I framed in an ‘artsy’ way, and a lot of questionable haifashion choices. No Jared photo. I examined the photo placed on my laptop again, it looked exactly like the others in the box. Yellowed from the years and covered in a light film of dust. I flipped it over, and saw a handwritten note. “Love you always - Jared”. His penmanship was almost illegible, and there was a heart beside his name. Wow.
As if I didn’t have enough confusing feelings to process right now. Desperate to hold onto a semblance of reality, I texted Sara asking if she moved my photos. That would make sense, right? She learned about Jared last night, maybe she dug up my boxes from college? My phone chimed. Sara questioned your message “Did you move any of my old college photos?” - for non-iOS users, that means she held down on my message and selected a question mark. Since she’s at work, that’s likely the best response I’ll get for a few hours, but it’s safe to assume Sara didn’t touch the photo.
After covering my shifts at the restaurant for the week, I decided to reply to Jared. I sent him a brief email informing him that I would be taking a ferry to Vancouver Island the next day. Afterwards I found myself writing down the entire experience. This is unlike me, I don’t journal, or keep a blog, or anything like that. I’m not sure what compelled me, but this event felt… significant.

The Ferry

I loaded up my crappy little car with all my equipment, and left at the ass-crack of dawn. Traffic wasn’t too bad this early in the morning, and I made it to the terminal with time to spare. I pulled up to the ticketing booth, and fumbled with my phone until I found my online reservation email. They gave me my lane number and I drove through. The booth opened up to a huge tarmac with around 20 different lanes, and I found my spot in line. I pulled in behind 10 other vehicles and turned off my engine.
Non-locals won’t know what I mean when I say this, but: BCFerries is a racket. It’s like $100 one way with a vehicle. As my bank account drained, I remembered why I don’t visit Vancouver Island all that often. Beautiful though it may be. Maybe I can write this off as a business expense, I just need to learn taxes, and… business. Don’t judge, I went to school to study grainy surveillance footage. On second thought, Jared can cover my ferry costs.
After a long period of waiting, the ferry started loading up cars and I parked on the lower vehicle decks. For those unfamiliar, these ferries aren’t cute little boats. These are massive ships that can fit dozens of vehicles, and hundreds of passengers. They’re several stories tall and contain a restaurant, gift shop, play areas for children, and more. I made my way up to the upper passenger deck and got in line for breakfast. A breakfast meal with coffee cost me $20, and it left me feeling sick for hours. The racket continues.
After breakfast, I waddled over to passenger seating and managed to score a window seat. As I settled in for the rest of my journey, I finalised my plans for Jared’s ghost problem.

The Plan

There are three major events to investigate. The Ten Knocks, the Floating Spoon, and the Shadow Man. Here are my plans for each:
The Ten Knocks: Ten loud knocks ripple through the home every night at exactly 3:24am. According to Jared, the sound seems to come from a different location each night. As you know Jared already has an existing surveillance system. On top of that, I’m going to set up two Zoom audio recorders, and an old phone of mine to record audio throughout the night. From there I’m going to attempt to make a map of the approximate knock locations, and see what data we can generate. I’m hoping we can discover a pattern and isolate the source of these noises. Last time I mentioned a friend of mine who specialises in Forensic Audio. I'm hoping he can help me with this, but at the moment I haven’t heard back from him. I’m not sure I blame him, honestly.
The Floating Spoon: Surveillance footage shows the utensil drawer opening in the kitchen, and a spoon levitating in the air. Since the spoon's movements were quite articulate, I’ll be looking for any evidence of wiring rigs. I also brought a compass for detecting magnetic fields. I’ll be insisting on seeing Jared’s computers, to see if they have software that could fake these things with CGI. I should note that there were a few other objects I caught moving in the raw surveillance footage, but those could be faked with a single string. Unlike the Floating Spoon, which moved in many directions.
The Shadow Man: I’m going to get Jared to stand exactly where the figure appeared in the video, and take measurements for scale. If this man-shaped figure happens to be exactly Jared’s size, that’ll be a strong sign the footage is fake. If they’ll let me, I’m also going to inspect Simon’s bruises. Finger-shaped bruises can be imitated with makeup. A sobering reality here to consider is that if Jared faked the Shadow Man footage, I may have to call Child Protective Services. Simon’s noises and movement in the video indicated he was in legitimate distress. If I do determine the footage is fake, I’ll be demanding a detailed explanation of the hoax from Jared. For Simon's sake.

The Drive

The ferry docked, and I made my way down to my vehicle. Cell reception returned as we got closer to the island, so I entered Jared’s address into Google Maps. For those unfamiliar with Vancouver Island, this isn’t a tiny island you can cruise around in a day. It’s home to over 850,000 people and bigger than the Hawaiian islands combined, or half the size of Ireland. It’s home to a few cities; the largest of which being BC’s capital city, Victoria, and many towns of various sizes. For privacy reasons, I won’t be sharing exactly where Jared lives, but for context I’ll say that it’s a small town.
I’ve driven through the Island a few times, but this visit felt ominous. Pouring rain from the grey skies splattered my windshield. The roads were flanked on both sides by towering evergreen trees, sprawling all the way across distant mountain ranges. As I left the cities and hit a winding stretch of highway, I couldn’t help feeling like I was in the opening scene of The Shining. My speakers blasted upbeat 90s classics to keep my spirits up, but the foreboding feeling was hard to shake.
As I approached the town where Jared lives, I decided to stop at a cute little coffee shop advertising free Wi-fi. Knowing you’re about to see your ex is nerve-wracking enough on its own. Let alone when you’re going to their home, meeting their wife, and presumably fighting ghosts. I ordered a latte, and found a quiet spot in the corner. As the rain pattered against the window, I called Sara on FaceTime. She answered, and I could tell she was walking home from the restaurant. After some small talk, I blurted out what was on my mind:
“Am I making a terrible mistake?” Sara stifled a laugh.
“I mean… How honest do you want me to be?” We both laughed this time, if a bit nervously on my end. “Look. Either you’re about to save a family and fight some ghosts, or somebody’s living in their walls, or your ex is pranking you. What’s your plan if things go to shit?”
“More like when things go to shit. Let’s just hope he pays me upfront.”
Sara knew me well enough to know I’m very safety-conscious. Working for a crime lab tends to have that effect. I had already shared Jared’s address with her, and called ahead to a local motel. I explained that I was staying with someone nearby, but had concerns about my safety. I would have preferred spending all my nights in a motel, but our ‘ghost’ only knocks in the middle of the night. Wendy, the manager, was lovely and agreed to hold a room for the first night. No charge unless I check in! It was their off season, and they had plenty of vacancies. I love small towns.
Sara and I decided on one final safety measure. If I feel unsafe at any time, I’ll text her a code phrase. Like ‘How was your job interview?’
Furthermore, we have a daily check-in, and if I don’t respond within 20 minutes, Sara will call the authorities. Realising Jared IS an authority, Sara wrote down the direct lines for EMT, Fire and RCMP in the hopes that someone will check on me. Our conversation came to a close.
“I love you, Sara.”
“Love you too Marn. Stay safe!”
“Bye.”
“Bye.”
The call ended. I collected myself, pulled up the hood of my jacket, and ran out into the pouring rain to my car. I sent Jared a text letting him know I was close, and drove the rest of the way there.

The House

Jared and Jenny’s house is tucked in the back corner of an upper class, surrounded by woods. I pulled up the driveway, feeling very out of place in my crappy sedan. An old woman standing outside in a neighbouring front yard eyed my poor ass with suspicion. I ignored her. The house was modern, bright white with black accents, and completely unassuming. The rain had lifted, and a sliver of sunlight made the house seem positively welcoming. Despite seeing the house in videos and pictures, a part of my brain expected some sort of haunted castle. Which couldn’t be further from the truth.
I had barely gotten out of my car when Jared and Jenny came outside to greet me. It’s always a little awkward sussing out the etiquette when meeting up with your ex after several years. Do we shake hands, or hug, or exchange an explosive fist bump? I was panicking a little, but Jenny cut right through that by springing an enthusiastic hug on me.
“Oh my god hiii!” Jenny had that gorgeous, effortless, hippy-island-girl thing going on. Her shoulder-length straight hair was blonde, and she wore a long, flowing olive cardigan, and black leggings with sneakers. “It’s so nice to meet you! Thank you so much for coming.”
Jared was standing behind her and gave a small wave, “Hey, Marn.” He looked exactly like the video. We exchanged a brief hug. I’m not sure if everyone else over-analyzes every single social interaction they’re in, but I was very cognizant of not letting that hug linger. A professional hug. Jenny chimed in.
“I love your videos!” Jenny’s enthusiasm seemed genuine. “After uh, all this started happening, I went deep down the YouTube rabbit hole. There’s a lot of stuff out there, but your videos made me feel sane.”
“Yeah, I came into the room and saw you on the TV. I was like, whoa, I dated her in college!” Jared added.
“I didn’t believe him at first, but he had proof!” Jenny gave him a playful smack on the arm.
“Evidence is important.”
Jenny laughed at Jared’s terrible cop joke. I could see why he liked her, Jenny’s sunny disposition was infectious. In comparison, Jared and I were two people with very dry senses of humour.
We exchanged pleasantries, and the couple helped me bring my bags into the guest room. Jared gave me something of a tour of the home. Having studied their surveillance footage in detail, I had no issue navigating their home. It was easy to forget I hadn’t been here before. When we got to the kitchen, I made a mental note of the ceiling. Adorned with several wooden beams, perfect for stringing up wires to say, make a spoon dance in the air. Interesting.
Walking down the hallway to the master bedroom, and nursery, Jared pointed out a small blind spot in the cameras. I made a note to place one of my cameras there to cover that gap. While the knocks occurred in different locations each night, the main hallway was where the most activity occurred. I decided that this would be a good spot for my thermal camera, a piece of equipment I’ve owned for several years but never had a good excuse to use. According to the lore, ghosts can affect temperature. I guess we’ll see.
As Jared showed me the nursery, he explained that Simon would be staying at his sister-in-laws for the foreseeable future. I had hoped to take a look at his bruises, but this didn’t feel like the time to mention Simon’s injuries, or the Shadow Man. Jenny’s expression darkened, and she brought it up without my prompting.
“After Jared showed me…” her voice quavered. She paused before collecting herself. “...The video, I didn’t feel safe having him here any more. We visit him every day.”
Jenny’s eyes welled up, and she excused herself. Left alone with Jared for the first time, there was an awkward pause. Wanting to avoid awkwardness at all costs, I asked Jared if he could do me a favour: Stand where the Shadow Man stood, and imitate his movements. For scale, I told him, and that was true. If Jared’s measurements match the Shadow Man, there’s a good chance he faked the footage, either with CGI or some sort of lighting rig. Jared seemed surprised, but he complied. I think he understood where I was going with this.
I grappled with my emotions versus my logic. On one hand, this ‘ghost’ should have a rational explanation, and the most rational explanation was that this was a hoax. On the other hand, Jared’s wife is crying because she doesn’t feel like her child is safe in her home. If this is a prank, to what end? My relationship with Jared ended amicably. Hell, he was the one who ended it. It didn’t make sense. None of it did.
After playing Shadow Man charades, I inquired about Jared’s security system. I wanted to see how he viewed surveillance footage. Jared darted into the bedroom and grabbed his laptop, a Macbook that was several years old. His security cameras uploaded over wi-fi to the cloud, and he was able to access that footage via an app. This app deletes the videos after a period of time, so Jared had been downloading them onto his computer. I noted he had several external hard drives, video files take up a lot of space so this made sense. I asked if I could borrow his laptop for a moment.
“Sure, do whatever you want.” Jared handed me the laptop, which I took into the guest bedroom where I was staying. I took this opportunity to see if his computer had any visual effects, or video editing apps. All he had was iMovie, not a particularly powerful option.
I spent a few hours reviewing the laptop, and then editing some B-roll footage I had shot earlier on my own computer. Jared knocked on the door. I looked up to see him in full police gear, and he let me know he was going to work. After Jared left, Jenny poked her head in the doorway and asked if I’d like to go out for dinner tonight, just the two of us. I agreed. All I had eaten was sickening ferry-food for breakfast, and Jenny seemed nice enough.

The Dinner

Jenny drove us to this amazing little Italian restaurant, and we had a fantastic time! She pushed many appetisers on me (so much bread), and the main course was delicious. I had linguine pescatora, and Jenny had gnocchi. Jenny had one glass, and I had the rest of the wine bottle. The dinner was a little awkward at first, but by the end of the night we felt like old friends. For Jenny’s sake, I won’t discuss every single thing she told me, but here are the relevant bits:
I previously described Jenny as a seamstress. While that is true, it’s under-selling what she does. Jenny knows some specific, technical dress-making techniques. She has her own business, targeted towards Renaissance Fairs and cosplayers. Her work eventually attracted the attention of Hollywood productions. Now she makes beautiful clothing for feature films (period pieces), and high-end clients. I wondered how she and Jared could afford their beautiful home, she appears to be the reason.
Jared and Jenny met a little over 3 years ago. Jared was a few years out of the academy, and got stationed in their small town. By coincidence, he had moved into her apartment building. They struck up a conversation one day when Jared offered to help her haul several bags of dresses to her car. She liked him, and asked him out for coffee. They married two years later, and she got pregnant with Simon around that time.
At one point later in the evening, we got onto the subject of ghosts. Jenny’s always been a spiritual person, her office is full of crystals, and she loves astrology. I also learned she believes she saw a ghost as a child. As she describes it, she was in bed and a bearded old man in a white three-piece suit appeared in the room. He loomed over her with an intense stare, and they locked eyes for a long time. Jenny rolled to her side, and when she looked back he was gone. I asked if she ever saw the man again, and she answered no. I spoke to her about the phenomena of sleep paralysis, and she conceded that was possible. I’m not sure if she believed that or not. Regardless, I could see myself being good friends with Jenny.

Night One

We had such a lovely time at dinner, my reason for visiting had all but slipped my mind. It wasn’t until our drive home that I realised we were heading back to (for all intents and purposes) a haunted house. A pit began to form in my stomach as we pulled into the driveway. At night, the house took on an eerie presence, and the surrounding woods had me feeling like something could leap out at me at any moment. Jenny must have been feeling the same way, as we hurried into the house. Jared still wasn’t back yet, as he worked 12 hour shifts.
I asked Jenny if she wanted to help me set up some of my equipment before bed, and her expression darkened. She declined. She opened up a drawer and pulled out a massive bag of earplugs, offering me some. This seems to be her solution to the nightly knocking sounds. I took some earplugs, though I forgot them on the counter. I got to work setting up my cameras and audio recording devices. I placed one of my cameras to cover the blind spot Jared showed me, and set the thermal camera in the main hallway. I was more than a little tipsy, but I managed to get the job done. After triple-checking that everything was recording, I shuffled back to the guest bedroom to sleep. It was around 10:30 pm, and I was dead tired, but knowing why I was there, I set an alarm for 3:15 am, hoping to be awake for the knocks.
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP!
I shut the alarm off, and groaned. I barely registered falling asleep. It was one of those sleeps where it feels like you’ve blinked, and all of a sudden it’s several hours later. Awful. I grabbed my phone, pulled myself out of bed, and left my room. I checked the time, 3:20 am. I shuffled into the main hallway, and waited. The minutes felt like an eternity as I stood around, waiting for a noise. It was dead quiet. Impatient, I found myself checking my phone. While waiting for a ghostly knocking. Something must be wrong with my brain. As my phone’s clock read 3:23, I put my phone away and listened.
I couldn’t hear any footfalls, or doors opening. No strange noises from the plumbing or AC units. As I lingered in the silence, I wondered if this would be the night when the noises stopped. Did I scare the ghost away?
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG ! BANG!
I screamed, startled by the incredible volume of noise that surrounded me. It felt like the banging was right beside my head, as if the very walls were screaming at me. Then it started again.
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG ! BANG!
I whirled around, searching for a source to this thunderous sound. No such source was obvious to me. Jared came out of the bedroom in his pyjamas, and stared at me for a moment. As if to say, ‘Told you so’, but no lecture came. If anything, he looked sad. Disheartened that this horrible noise was real, not some sort of shared hallucination. He took a step towards me.
“Oh my god…” Was all that came out of my mouth.
“Let’s talk in the morning.” Jared said, shivering a little before heading back to bed. It’s clear he's used to this, but my heart was pounding out of my chest. After a pause, I followed suit, and returned to the guest bedroom. It took a long time to fall back asleep after that. I wished I took Jenny up on her offer of earplugs.

Reviewing the Evidence

I awoke around 8:30 to a gentle knock on my door, and an offer I couldn’t refuse.
“There’s fresh coffee, if you want some.” Jenny announced. God yes.
As I sat down for coffee, nectar of the gods, I couldn’t help but focus on the empty high chair at the kitchen table. There wasn’t much conversation in the morning, but Jenny did tell me she was spending the day at her sister’s with Simon. Later Jared would go there after work to spend the night with him. My heart hurts for them. As Jenny left, Jared encouraged me to check my footage from last night. He did the same with his security system.
I scrubbed through my three audio recordings. The ear-shattering knocks were definitely coming from the main hallway. I marked down where I was standing on my sound map. I checked my blind spot camera, and scrubbed through the night’s events. Nothing of note until I enter the hallway at 3:20, stare at my phone and then jump into the air at the sound of the knocks. As I finished up with this, Jared came into the room. He told me there wasn’t anything noteworthy on his cameras, just the knocks, but he would send me the footage to review. He was about to leave the room, when I asked him if he wanted to stick around to watch the thermal camera footage with me. I opened up the video file.
The thermal camera was pointing straight down the main hallway, now visible in various shades of orange, and purple. The walls were brighter than the doorways, and the lights appeared brightest. I scrubbed through the hours of footage. It captured Jared going into the bedroom around 12:35 am, having finished work at midnight. As the timestamp hits 3:20, I come into frame, my skin orange, and my hair and clothes closer to purple. I watch myself pull out my phone, and I shoot an awkward smile at Jared, who seems unphased. At 3:23, right before the knocking sound, a dark blue spot appears on the floor in front of me.
The dark blue mass starts rising, getting taller and taller until it looms over me. The deep blue shape becomes humanoid.
“What the fuck?” Jared interjects over my shoulder.
At exactly 3:24, I jump at the knocks, and the man-shape follows my movement. It doesn’t have a face, but I can tell that it’s… staring at me. In the video, Jared comes out of the bedroom. The blue mass is still in front of him, but you can see the blue colour turn closer to purple as Jared stands behind it.
As Jared takes a step forward, he walks right through the mass. He shivers, affected by the temperature difference, before he walks back into the room. As I exit the hallway, the mass ‘looks’ at me, its’ featureless head tilting in my direction.
It just stands there. I scrub forward several hours. A distinct man shape, motionless. It’s not until 6 am, when Jenny comes out of the bedroom, that the figure drops back down into the floor. The temperature readings become normal again. The video ends a few hours later, when I come to collect the camera’s memory card.
Jared and I stared at each other for a moment. He collected himself.
“So, in your professional opinion, what, uh… what the hell was that?”
“In my professional opinion?” He nodded.
“Jared,” I stated. “Your house is fucking haunted.”

Hello. As stated I am an idiot. I am behind and still fairly clueless to how I even get an NFT or a wallet etc.
However, I do get that they are useful and I understand their utility. Though I do have some questions. Perhaps wrinkled brain apes can kindly answer them without shaming me for being behind in the times.
Questions:
1.) If I set up a Gamestop Wallet, is that all I need to buy them? Or do I have to buy Etherium somewhere else and then pipe it into my gamestop wallet first?
2.) You can only purchase them with crypto of the like correct? I couldn't use regular money or another crypto?
3.) Once purchased, can I add things to it? Like if I bought a monkey pic NFT, could I ad something to it or it's utility like a housing abstract title/contract or title to a vehicle or any other style contract?
4.) Are the NFTs fixed at a set amount of Etherium that they were built with? Am I thinking about this correctly that these are "built" on the blockchain as the Etherium was created/bought to "mint" it?!?
5.) If the Etherium it was built on goes down, does that affect the value of the NFT?
6.) Can we make our own NFTs on their platform or within their wallet I guess? And if so, can I build one inside there system and put/embed a housing contract/title of something to it? Like perhaps a ownership of an entity that owns a physical asset? As to skirt the title search and closing times etc?!?!
Please go easy on me as I have been overwhelmed and super behind on learning about this stuff. I sometimes wallow in all that I have missed over the past 2 years. I feel as though I have missed out on so so many drops/giveaways from members of this community and GameStopNFT as well. I don't care about getting free shit, as I don't have an interest in its monetary value and figured everyone would just turn around and sell the free NFTs they were given anyways. So I figured even if they did have a few dollar value that it would be destroyed by people immediately turning around to sell them. As time has passed I have come to realize that all I did by not jumping on every introductory offer, was screw myself. Not in value but more or less like I'm falling out of our community by lagging. Like I missed out on some cool stuff that would essentially have sentimental value going forward. And I highly value sentiment.
I know there are others here like me who are becoming increasingly more overwhelmed by falling behind.
If someone has a really simple #'d step easy to follow guideline on how to go about getting started that would be great.

I’ve been doing research and have landed on either the hybrid sport or the ex-l to be my next vehicle. This would be my first car purchase and want to be sure that I am making the best choice. I first want to know folks’ experiences with both 2023 models and how it’s going for them. Also wanted to see if someone could explain to me the differences between the two in terms of engine/battery. All know is that the sport hybrid has a 2 liter engine compared to ex-l’s 1.5 liter engine. I know hybrid sport has more hp than the ex-l also. But what does that mean in terms of functionality? I know there can be better mileage on the hybrid. I guess what I’m asking is which one offers more benefits in the long term? I’m also open to answer questions if that would help in your suggestions. After an extended period of unemployment, I finally got a really good offer on the West Coast. (I was formerly in the Southeast.) I got an apartment in my new city though the rent is on the high side. I had a buyer for the old house lined up, but the home inspection turned up several issues and the buyer bailed.
So now I’m stuck with a house 2500 miles away that is in need of repair before it is sellable or rentable. Repairs that I cannot afford in my present financially overextended state. The house is most likely underwater and my credit is shot from unemployment and moving expenses, making a HELOC or other loan (most likely) impossible.
And since I now have to cover a lease, a mortgage and two sets of utility payments, I’m basically living paycheck to paycheck. Thanks to that fact, it’s unlikely I’ll be able to afford repairs, and the house will keep falling more and more into disrepair.
It seems the most obvious options are to sell, rent, go into voluntary foreclosure or do some sort of bankruptcy. Selling is difficult because the house is probably underwater and I can’t cover a loss. Renting also seems unlikely because it has to be livable, and the necessary repairs look to be >$3000 altogether. I could do a bankruptcy, but my income dictates that it would probably have to be Chapter 13 (or maybe 11?) Foreclosure is starting to look more and more attractive. Yes I know I won’t be able to buy a house for years but I’m about done with the whole homeownership thing. I’m just not suited to it. I’m not handy with tools or home repair, and I loathe yard work.
A few other options that might help…sell my car and commute. Except mass transit would take 2 hours to work - each way, though I might be able to get away with going to work twice a week. Ditching my current lease and getting a cheaper place would be nice, except my credit is now shot to heck and I can’t afford $3k to break.
Any suggestions on which path to take? Am I missing anything?

This is the story of Miquella, as i understand it; and how Fromsoft deceived their playerbase into adoring a God of Manipulation.
TL;DR A single Aeonia caused Caelid, and there are 2-3 just chilling in the haligtree. Gowry is likely Miquella in disguise possessing pests.

Part 1: Obfuscation and Vague Language

The descriptions of Miquella in the game are intentionally obfuscated and use vague neutral language, furthermore the wording is specifically chosen as to be easier to interpret as being of benevolent intention.
However, nowhere is empathetic intention explicitly demonstrated, and statements that might at a glance seem empathetic can be interpreted as sinister or cold and calculated.
1."My brother will keep his promise. He possesses the wisdom, the allure, of a god – he is the most fearsome Empyrean of all.” - Melanias helm
This quote could be interpreted as evidence of Miquella being a benevolent character, true to his word. However, it more directly implies that he is both Worthy of Fear, Unnaturally compelling, and, extremely wise. Also, people assume unjustly here that the 'promise' mentioned is the curing of her rot. But all we really know, is that a promise was made.
2."The Empyrean Miquella is loved by many people..." - bewitching branch
This quote is relatively straightforward, but it could be argued that being loved by many people is not necessarily a sign of a benevolent character. People can be loved for a variety of reasons, some of which may not be morally upright. The other half of this quote is far more revealing..
"...For he has learned very well how to Compel such Affection"-
This might very well be the biggest red flag that the love held for Miquella is born of His will to Be loved, rather than the will of those who love him to Choose to love him.
3."Oh brother, lord brother, please die a true death" - golden epitaph
This quote could be interpreted as a prayer for mercy or a desire for Miquella's brother to have a peaceful and dignified death. However, it could also be interpreted as a sinister or calculated statement, suggesting that Miquella has some ulterior motive for wanting his brother to die. This interpretation is furthered by the fact that the eclipse shotel Weaponizes deathblight "Set the sword aflame with the prince of deaths deathblight'
Additionally it is also stated on the golden epitaph that the sword was itself 'made to commemorate the death of Godwyn the Golden, first of the demigods to die.' - a statement like this is equally ambiguous, as in my mind commemoration is often a positive occasion.
4."He abandoned fundamentalism when he realized it could do nothing to contain Melanias rot" - Radagons rings of light incantation.
This quote suggests that Miquella abandoned his fundamentalist beliefs in order to find a way to contain his sister's rot. However, it could also be interpreted as evidence that Miquella is willing to abandon his principles when they no longer serve his goals. Furthermore, i believe this is alluding to the time when he realized rot to be a more powerful force than anything contained within the golden order. Thus dawning the age of Unalloyed gold.
5."Who is it that Miquella shall bless, if not the low and the meek?" - The Sacred Crown Helm
This quote could be interpreted as evidence of Miquella's benevolence, suggesting that he is concerned with helping those who are disadvantaged. However, it could also be interpreted as a sinister statement, suggesting that Miquella sees the low and the meek as an untapped resource that he can exploit for his own purposes. Afterall, those in crisis make for devout converts.
It seems to be the case that people believe Miquella is good because it is what they want to believe, and in this they gravitate towards the interpretation that casts him in a good light. This is why, all the fan art we ever see of him is of an innocent benevolent being- and, as such, that is how we have began to think of him.
I believe however that this was exactly the intention of Fromsoft.

Part 2: Love and Will, Blood and Gold

The Bewitching Branch item is crafted using two items; an Enchantment of Unalloyed Gold, and Youthful Sacramental Blood. One of the items is Miquellas lily, who's description states "A delicate water lily of unalloyed gold thought to be beloved by the Empyrean Miquella in his youth." (The branch happens to be the only thing that can be crafted with this item.)
The second ingredient in the bewitching branch is the only other item in the game that speaks to the act of someone tending to plants with their own Blood. The Sacramental Bud. We learn in the description of these buds that they were long ago "cultivated with youthful, sacramental blood.".What is another case we have of Youthful Blood being used to Feed a Plant? The Haligtree. "watered with Miquellas own blood"
This Youthful blood combined with the Unalloyed Gold, compels wills.

This realization leads one to multiple conclusions, one of which being that the haligtree itself could potentially be a beacon of will domination of sorts; being grown of his blood, and braced in a structure of unalloyed gold.
This also leads me to believe that perhaps Melania might be entirely subject to the Will of Miquella. His first and most successful test of the perfected bewitching branch - the Unalloyed Gold Needle.
The fact that she is clad in unalloyed gold, and has had the golden needle within her, leads me to believe that not only was the will of the rot within her being contained, but indeed Melania herself had become subject to the bewitching allure of Miquella.
She is now merely his Blade.

Additionally, Understanding the components of the bewitching branch provides insight into what role Mohg is to play in Miquellas larger scheme.
We learn from a ghost in the consecrated snowfields that mogh took Miquellas 'sacred flesh', as if to put emphasis on the fact that this is Just his body, not his soul.
Furthermore, in the opening of the game we seem mohg carrying the lifeless body- and importantly- it is Cocoonless. Meaning that the cocoon we see him in Now, is one he crafted around himself in his new area. It is also a visual match to the ones present in the haligtree, so, definitely miquellas going.
Speaking of the cocoon; we learn from the 'lord of bloods exaltation' talisman, that this cocoon has a literal thirst for blood.
As it states "render up your offerings of blood; Drench my consort's chamber. Slake his cocoon's thirst."Notice how it doenst say 'fill his cocoons bounds' or 'drench his body', instead specifically drawing attention to the fact that Miquellas Cocoon Wants Blood. And miquellas blood, is powerful.
So much so in fact that the formless mother might be to Miquella what the rot goddess is to Melania. Only miquella has learned how to dominate wills, and as such he is more in control of the formless mother than she is of him. This could be the reason for the unalloyed gold ring on miquellas body.

Mohg is an unwanted omen demi god, discarded into the leyndell sewers at birth up until he was elevated by the mysterious 'formless mother'. (potentially by the will of miquella).
Miquella was a prodigy Empyrean who studied closely with his father and God Radagon and was powerful enough to invent a technology capable of controlling the will of the scarlet rot, and developing a godtree likely intended to take the place of the erdtree as the central governing force of life and death in the lands between.
Suffice to say, i think the assumption that miquella would have left himself so vulnerable to attack is a mistake. And it makes more sense to me that Mogh has a role to play in the larger scheme.
Mogh himself doesnt know this- believing to have been chosen to begat an age of his own- but he is more likely a mere pawn of the more knowledgeable demigod. As no matter how much he serves miquellas will, his lifeless body does not acknowledge him. So Mohg carries on, clueless as to the role he is playing.

I think it might be the case that Melania, by will of Miquella, fought in the shattering to test the full power of the Rot and to implement Miquella's desire for godhood and the creation of new life. In "Cleanrot Knight Finlays Ashes," it is revealed that Melania fell into a Slumber immediately after the initial Caelid bloom and was carried back by a random knight in unalloyed gold. The feat is described as unbelievable, specifically to draw attention to it. I believe this may be because it was not just some random Knight, but indeed the soul of a demigod piloting a Knight.
At current, Melania is found at the base of the Haligtree, slowly acclimating it to the rot, as i believe that part of Miquella's plan is to have the Haligtree become an erdtree of the strongest force in the land - the Scarlet Rot.
This way, the blooms will develop within an environment already prepared for them. Also, the haligtree is a Giant Hollow tube, with a brace surrounding it. A perfect structure to bear the new aeonian blooms.
We also see a drainage channel in the haligtree- yet interestingly, it is draining away Water- while a literal Waterfall of Rot pours down into it.

But it is time to ask; Who is Gowry?
He would like us to believe him to be a heretical sage from Selia, offering us sellian spells and insights into the town. Initially he insults the worshipers of the rot as being 'witless', only to then later proclaim to be himself a worshipper of the Rot. And, finally, he claims to be father to Millicent and her sisters.
The first time you see Gowry, he asks you to cross the aeonian swamp. A tarnished on foot could do no such task. Yet, torrent, who's summoning ring is made of unalloyed gold, is unaffected by the rot. We know this is the case because the ring does not burn in the frenzied flame ending. But more importantly; How does Gowry know we have Torrent? Or that torrent possesses this ability? We have recently learned from the DLC reveal photo that Miquella was quite possibly torrents previous owner- and that torrent just happened to choose 'us' - the most probable candidate for success.
So. Gowry asks you to cross the lake of rot in aeonia- why? to retrieve for him a Broken Unalloyed Gold Needle. But how does he know of the existence of this item? and how does he know it is there? When we retrieve it for him, he then asks us to leave him be in private so he can Repair it. How does he Know how to repair one of the most advanced pieces of technology in the lands between? Designed specifically to combat the wills of outer gods. Or what it even is? or does? We return to find he has repaired it, and once repaired, it has a Tiny conspicuous Blood Red Spot in the center.. Blood, and Gold.
He then tells us to please give it to Millicent because He Just Knows Exactly what the needle is for, and how to use it.
We approach Millicent with the needle, and she seems surprised and skeptical that a random needle would cure her rot- as if its capacity to do so is far from common knowledge. She then Immediately falls Asleep, and awakens with a sudden urge to go to the Haligtree.
We talk again to Gowry and he acts as though this is All According to Plan. Sending Millicent to Bloom in the Haligtree.
Saying 'now she TOO can begin her journey' - admitting that he is likely the cause for the other bloom we see at the bottom of the haligtree.
Furthermore he knows by exactly what mechanisms Millicent can be made to bloom into the most potent bomb for the haligtree. How would he know that? and Why the Haligtree? Throughout the quest he also demonstrates knowledge of events in Millicents quest before having been told of them, as though he is somehow keeping tabs through the unalloyed gold
Gowry seems to have a deep knowledge of both the scarlet rot and unalloyed gold, even though it's not clear how he could have obtained that knowledge. This raises some questions about his true identity and motivations.

One possible explanation for Gowry's knowledge is that he is actually a persona invented by Miquella, as Miquella is a well-known scholar who has studied the scarlet rot extensively, and invented/utilized unalloyed gold to combat it.
It's possible that he created the Gowry character to manipulate the player.
Ordina, the northern most selian town, is covered in miquella statues- so we know miquella had knowledge of and connections to the selians; enough knowledge to impersonate one.
If Gowry is really Miquella in disguise, then it would resolve many of the conflicts in logic that arise from his character. For example, it would explain how he knows so much about the scarlet rot, even though he shouldn't. How he knows things about millicent without first being told. How he Knows not only where the unalloyed gold needle is, but what it does, how to repair it, and how its used!
It would also explain why he seems to have conflicting motivations and contradictions in the things he says to us - he might be trying to guide the player towards a certain goal, while also trying to protect his true identity as Miquella.
Additionally, the highest concentrations of sacramental buds in the game are by the hidden Miquella statue where we find the amber starlight, and, in the church where we meet Millicent.
Overall, the idea that Gowry is really Miquella in disguise (possessing pests like ranni possesses a doll or like shabriri with corpses) seems like a plausible explanation for many of the mysteries surrounding his character. However, it's also possible that there are other explanations that haven't been revealed yet, so it's hard to say for sure.
He puts on an act, but in his lies there are truths. For instance, Millicent and kin might well be his 'daughters' in that he engineered the conditions of their births. He also laughs suspiciously long after saying 'i must be getting old' almost like he thought he never would.
Or when you first give him the needle and he talks himself up saying 'ah yes this must have been made my a true artisan visionary who understands the nature of life'.
Like, how would YOU know Gowry? Got a lot of points of reference for this sort of thing?

I believe the story of Miquellas haligtree is not a tragedy, and his plan has not failed. In fact, we played right into it. It is a cautionary tail of the consequences of unexamined unquestioning faith in a narrative for the reason alone that one would prefer it be true.
The Truest tragedy of the game is Melania, who never had a chance between the rot within and the manipulation of her brother demigod who sought only to use her rot to seek dominion over the lands between. The oracles in the haligtree herald the coming god, but its not Melania. Did we honestly think the most fearsome empyrean, the god of manipulation, wouldnt be pulling our strings?
Fromsoft has cultivated a mentality within their community around the idea of Miquella,\ the empathetic and Just, benevolent savior of those unblessed by grace, tragically abducted; plans halted or uprooted. But the reality of it seems to be far more sinister, and also, far more human.
One version of the story is emotionally appealing and easy to see at a surface level glance, While the other is unpleasant and unnerving, and requires more in-depth reasoning to discover.
In this, i believe they have successfully convinced the majority of the playerbase, including those who proport to communicate the lore, that this most fearsome and compelling of gods is Exactly who he'd like you to think he is- a god worth worshiping unquestionably -because that is the story that we in large want to believe
So much so that much like with real world figures of worship, many cant even comprehend being wrong in their placement of their faith, because to do so would mean to admit that someone once praised was never worthy of praise at all, and may indeed have been manipulating all along our desire for something worthy of worship.
Honestly the metanarrative behind this aspect of the game has blown me away. The success with which they have deceived us into believing in a false idol, while also putting the information that undoes them right before our eyes. Building such a masterful illusion of benevolence around a character who is potentially a true horror-

TLDR: In-Laws are creating a lot of issues since the wedding, we used to be close. Seeing them soon and need advice on how to have a conversation with them to fix things.
I'm not really sure how to use reddit as this is my first post. I usually only look at the Reddit posts on Instagram and stuff, but my husband is an avid Reddit user and suggested I ask for advice here. That said, please excuse any mistakes. My husband and I have been married just under a year and throughout this year his family has been getting progressively worse in their treatment of me. Before the wedding they were incredible and I really began to view them as family. My own mom was extremely toxic growing up and I have PTSD and anxiety from it (I have seen a therapist for the PTSD, but its still hard) so them being so welcoming and loving was everything I could have dreamed of. This has made them becoming rude towards me extremely hard to deal with. Thankfully, we live six hours away from them, but we still have to see them relatively often.
The issue started last summer a couple of months after our wedding. They came and stayed at our tiny townhome for a visit. They were welcome to stay as we were still on good terms at this point, but the visit was very rough for me. They love to make jokes about how they have always waited for the day my husband would move out so that they could trash his place (He isn't the cleanest, but he has never trashed their home and treats it with respect. Also, in my ILs marriage dynamic they both work and share chores, I am the primary homemaker in our dynamic and do all of the cleaning. Husband doesn't have to lift a finger but only helps out sometimes. This makes it especially annoying that they trash our house to bother him, but he doesn't actually care about the mess as it isn't his job). Which they completely stayed true to. During several different visits to our home they treated it like garbage. They also brought an immense amount of stuff for a two day visit and *literally* covered every inch of available space in every room except our bedroom. They had zero respect for our rules and boundaries. For example, our landlord doesn't allow pets at all but they brought their dog and allowed him to sit up on the couch to look out the window, which is an activity that dog will do for hours. Our landlord stops by frequently to mow the lawn and stuff so I asked them to please not make it so obvious we had a pet here and to also keep him downstairs as the upstairs is carpet. His dad laughed out loud in my face and told me no. SIL also went through all of my bathroom cabinets and used some of my stuff. I am a private person and did not appreciate her doing that without asking. There were also several other things during this visit, but this is getting long and I have a lot more to discuss.
The next issue came up when we visited them for Christmas. I was already stressed going into it because of everything mentioned before, but I was willing to move on without it being a big deal and just tried to enjoy the visit. However, it was really my families turn for Christmas but we negotiated with the families that we would drive 6 hours on Christmas day to be able to see everyone. We stayed with the In-Laws for a week and would only see my family for a day. When we arrived the first day to my In-Laws they told us SIL had the flu, which they'd known before and decided to not tell us. I have two young nephews I was excited to see and my dad was recovering from surgery, so getting sick was not an option as I would not be able to see my own family. I told them I would be doing my best to avoid getting sick (nothing serious, just hand washing and keeping some distance physically. I didn't even expect the same from them). They took this as extremely offensive and rude. FIL came and sat ON MY LEG on the couch later that night and made a comment about me getting sick and turned and "jokingly" coughed in my face. I was too stunned to speak and let my husband handle that. MIL and SIL were texting back and forth with each other gossiping all week. Which we discovered because MIL came home from work and got mad at me for "isolating" myself all day (I took a 30 minute nap because I was starting to feel sick and came back down immediately after my nap, but they are a family that hangs out 24/7 and gets mad at me for being a little more introverted). She wouldn't have known this if SIL hadn't been texting her. MIL had also previously agreed on the time we would be leaving on Christmas but changed her mind and texted at midnight Christmas Eve saying we better stay all morning and not take away any of her precious time even though we'd been there a week and would only have a few hours with my family. This felt like they had absolutely no respect for me and my time with my family. All week it felt like all they cared about was them and their time with their precious baby boy, my family and I did not matter at all.
Also, when we visit them they have no boundaries about entering our room whenever they please even though we are married. I'll go in the room to find stuff moved around sometimes that I know wasn't my husband. They also barge in all hours of the night. Again, I am a private person and an introvert so this makes me very uncomfortable but I have to put up with it or I am seen as rude and its viewed as me not wanting to participate in the way their family operates. When we stay for long visits I feel like we can't do anything marriage-wise, even if its just having a discussion because everyone will know about it. I know its their house and their rules, but we aren't in a position to afford a hotel when we stay for a week and my husband loves to see them. There have been times his sister will be mad the next morning because she thinks we've been having sex or arguing even if we haven't. Its also just none of her business and no matter what we are doing, we always try to be as quiet as possible.
A month after we got home they texted and asked if they could come down and stay at our house for a tournament BIL was in. We said no as it was my 21st birthday weekend and I had a bunch of different plans all weekend and did not want the stress of them staying at my house and being a host over my birthday weekend (oh, they also did not know or care that it was my birthday). We politely declined and offered a weekend of one of BIL's other tournaments but this pissed them off a ton. His mom blew up his phone with calls and texts saying we were "holding a grudge from Christmas" which was not the reason and also they had never apologized for Christmas. Husband took a night to think about how to best discuss everything with her and told her he would call her the next day. The next night they had a phone conversation where she completely bulldozed all of our points and said that we needed to have empathy for her as she was going through some life struggles and that we had hurt them too. We are broke newlyweds in college, we have our own struggles and are receiving no empathy from them. I have had more than enough empathy for her. Husband asked her to elaborate on what we had done to hurt them but she refused, so we have no idea if we actually did anything wrong. I think it was just a way for her to deflect, but he said he was sorry if we had done anything. She refused to apologize for anything and said that they were only making themselves at home (the way they treated our home was not at all how they treat their own home). She claimed that we're family and I need to be okay with SIL using my things as "that's what sister's do". I grew up with a sister, my sister would beat my ass if I went through her stuff without permission. MIL told husband that I was creating too many rules for the house and that no one would like us or visit if we kept doing this. We have friends over all the time and my family has stayed with no issue. We haven't had to create "rules" for anyone else, they all know how to reasonably treat someone else's home. Also, when visiting ILs home, I am expected to help with cleaning, dinner prep, and other chores. They also have their own house rules we are expected to follow so this seems like a double standard to me. She said I hadn't grown as a person because over Christmas I decided to allow my husband to handle the discussion with his family and stayed upstairs during a discussion about the Christmas issues. I simply prefer it to not be me vs 3 other people laughing at me and would rather have a mature 1 on 1 conversation. She also brought up me "isolating" myself again, but I just don't see the reason I (an introvert) can't take a few minutes to myself during an extremely uncomfortable week. I had confided in MIL some of my family issues when we were close before the wedding and she used all of my trauma against me in the discussion. She acted like I didn't know how a real family acts with each other and that I just need to change who I am and become like their family because who I am is wrong. I also know MIL talks trash behind my back because she does the same to BIL's girlfriend. (BIL and his GF are the only nice ones still and we are close with them). MIL also cried and told husband that he needs to call her during his rides home from work and stuff and talk to her more about his life (we have one car and I drive him home, also how many grown men do this??). Which, he already participates daily in a family group chat but that isn't enough apparently. Husband also has ADHD and if someone if out of sight, they're out of mind. I remind him all the time to call and reach out to them, which he does. We also used to visit way more often than we could afford financially, which again, was not enough for her. They are almost never the ones to reach out first. All of the siblings refer to MIL as a high school mean girl and this behavior is very common for her, I just was never on the receiving end before our marriage.
SIL is still young and lives at home. She has expressed discomfort at us being married and also has said that she doesn't want BIL to ever get married, and I am sure she feels the same about my husband. She hates that they aren't "her boys" anymore and that she has to share them. SIL cries when husband mentions that parents house is not his home anymore or that husband and I are our own family now. Honestly, most of SIL and MIL's behavior just seems to be icing me and BIL's GF out so that they can have the boys back. BIL's GF started some drama two Christmases ago but has grown immensely as a person and has apologized for it all. They still trash talk her and refuse to forgive. In-Laws are overly involved in their relationship as BIL is the golden child and also has some mental heath issues, but he is perfectly capable of making his own choices. It is a very "close knit" family. Only BIL and husband seem to see how toxic it can be in their family as they have had the chance to move out and live on their own. I try to have a lot of sympathy for SIL as she is a teen and hasn't lived away from home or gotten much life experience yet. I know most of what she does is because of MIL. I had a 1 on 1 conversation with her about all the issues, which I thought helped everything and it did for a few days, but then she started icing me out again and even ignored my birthday message I sent her. I don't think anything will improve with her until she moves out or we fix things with MIL.
I should also add that my husband has been completely on my side throughout this and has been incredible, there's no need to comment anything negative about him. We have had some issues in the past before our wedding because he would take their side on a lot of stuff, but he knows now that I am his priority as his wife. He is 100% supportive of any route I want to take with this, even if it means going low contact despite how close they all are.
All of this to say, we are going to be seeing them again in a few weeks and we haven't seen them since all the tension built up. I know I will have to take part in a discussion with all of them and I am terrified about it. I know we will be laughed at and bulldozed over. BIL and his GF will not be visiting with us so it will just be us VS the family. I need advice on how best to handle this to resolve the issues without making anything worse. I truly do love his family, and they were incredible before all of this. I just want us to get back to being a close and loving family. I hate girl games and this has been crippling for my anxiety. I want them to see that I am not a threat, I want them to be able to be close with my husband and spend time with everyone without all this awkward tension. I know this post makes them out to seem bad, but they were really great before all of this went down. The only thing I can think of that could have caused this is us getting married and me entering the family. This has gotten really long so if you've read this far, thank you for letting me vent and get my frustrations out! Any advice or stories of similar situations are welcome. Thanks!

Luna works on the open source Inochi2D VTuber rigging and animation software, as well as other VTuber tech and indie games. Lina also contributes to Inochi2D, and otherwise spends most of her time working on open source GPU drivers. We both have experience with systems administration, and we decided to start this instance to provide a place for all other VTubers to gather together! ✨
Our instance is based on the glitch-soc fork of Mastodon, which adds things like better notification controls and the ability to use formatting in posts (our own fork is here and it's based on the Treehouse version, in case you're curious!). Over time, we plan to modify Mastodon to add better tools for VTubers to share their content and allow others to find it.
This instance is hosted on our own hardware at a data center, and we have plans for expanding it and scaling it to be able to host everyone! We know VTubers love to post images and videos, so we are especially committed to having enough storage for all of you, starting with over 10TB of space right off the bat and able to scale up! Right now the instance is still on default settings for upload limits, but we will be optimizing it and customizing it to give everyone better options soon.
The VT Social logo is based on a concept by K.O.D.A., itself inspired by the nullptr::live logo by soundflora*.
There's unfortunately a lack of social media sites for Vtubers but keep in mind I don't think things will replace twitter, but there are many, many sites out there, just do what you can and don't stress the silly stuff. I am super new to Reddit and many sites, baby on internet I guess! My parents didn't want me to be on the internet until I hit 18 but anywayyyy!~

As title states. I’ve tried replacing water filter, thawing out, bleeding air, and replacing the water inlet valve.
The switches at the dispenser are clicking and operating as should.
It does appear that the connection at the base plate from the refrigerator up to the water dispenser is not getting water.
I’m stumped. Please help.

TL;DR: Future MIL has wishes and expectations of having grandbabies, raising the grandbabies, living with her son, being taken on vacations, and being given financial support that they don't need. This is culturally in line with what can be expected in their home country, but I don't care and plan to reject every single one.

My partner (31m) and I (26f) have been together for more than 7 years. I'd like to ask reddit's judgment so I can decide to either stand my ground or reconsider the hills I die on.
For background, partner's parents are immigrants who moved to the US a couple decades ago. They're the typical rags-to-comfort immigrant story. Now they own a house, are healthy, relatively young, still work, have built up a social network of friends locally. These past few years, future MIL has shared her life wishes for the following, all of which belong in the "hell to the no, f**k that" category for me:

She wants bio babies. - Currently, we are in the childfree camp. She's distraught about this and brings up the topic multiple times.
She expects to live with us. - She has offered to "gift" us a downpayment under the condition we get a house with a permanent space for them. Also insists she'll move in with us when we get our own place so she can "help" raise the babies. I would be open to living with her only if medically necessary.
She expects to be taken on extravagant vacations. - She recently learned of our couple's international trip and is demanding to be treated to future out of country vacations because she is getting "old and you don't know how much time we have left together"
She expects money. - She has asked for money and it is the expectation that we give the parents part of our monthly income, even though they don't need it? Not to mention I have tons of student loans and no savings yet. They ask for our financial info like salary, loans, expenses, etc. I keep everyone on an info diet but my partner does not.

To me, the above sounds sprinkled with guilt trips and feels like MIL wants to be my partner's wife. I myself come from an immigrant family (different country but culturally similar) and so I am VERY familiar with the dynamics and expectations from their home country. It is PRECISELY why these life "goals" of my future MIL were my dealbreakers before I even met her. I have experienced and witnessed enough emotional manipulation, loss of privacy/autonomy, marriage strain, etc. through my own family.
I love my partner and am ok with building boundaries as long as we have each others' backs. As I find myself having similar issues with both sets of parents due to cultural expectations, I am thinking that my approach may be too abrupt (single generation overhaul of their wishes) and maybe I should compromise. For now this is a hill I will die on.

My wife's car (2012 Toyota Prius V, with 144k miles on it) recently started making weird sounds and misfiring. Took it to the service center at the dealership and after troubleshooting it for a day they said there's coolant leaking into the cylinders, which is causing the misfires.

They gave us 3 options for repair (pardon if some technical details are missing, pretty woefully uneducated about cars and was trying to quickly jot notes while on the phone.)
- Replace headgasket and seals, resurface heads only for $5950
- Rebuild entire engine, all parts, resurface, clean, essentially brand new engine ~ $8600
- Replace with used engine $8000

Now, since it seems that the value of a used 2012 Prius V is only about $9-10k to begin with, we considered just trading the car in and buying a new one, but they only offered $500 to maybe $1000 for the car which on paper makes sense because this repair is necessary, but we're already in for $880 of diagnostic fees, so that's seeming like not an ideal option.
Currently, we're just not sure what to do, I'm leaning towards just sucking it up and getting a used engine since it's simple and we do have the cash in the bank, but would that 8k just be better suited towards a downpayment on a newer car?

For some added context, if my username is any indication, this quite literally, could not come at a worse time. Just trying my best to make sure we get the best value out of this because every single penny counts right now.
