2023.06.01 10:26 sanwugi 1 night in Istanbul

Hi everyone I'll be arriving 530 pm in Istanbul with a 3 pm departure to the US the next day. I am hoping to see some sights in the city while I am there (first time visitor).
Some questions:
1) Thoughts on using the taxi from the airport to get into the city? This is the fastest way I am assuming? I want to prioritize the little time I have rather than trying to save a few dollars
2) Can I use US dollars/euro/Visa for taxi and restaurants, or should I convert some to Lira?
3) Three things I am hoping to see are the blue mosque, Hagia sophia, and galata tower. Would you recommend getting a hotel near the mosques, or the tower side, and can I reasonably walk between these places
4) I heard getting through airport security for US bound flights is a nightmare; how early should I arrive for my flight?

TIA!

Maintain campus cleanliness Reject Yan Limon for Perelman Medical College

In the global epidemic, the economy is shrinking, the employment rate is low, the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine hired Yan Limeng as the hospital staff, this non-racist, non-discriminatory for Asian employees to provide jobs behavior, reflects the college's fraternity, equality. But the Perelman School of Medicine in the hiring of like-minded employees, it is time to consider the maintenance of campus cleanliness as the first task, reject Yan Limeng on stage to join the medical school.
Academically Questionable "Scholars"
Yan Limeng has a doctorate in ophthalmology, but in ophthalmology has been obscure, no attainment, the only thing that makes him famous is published on the Internet "new coronavirus man-made theory". Although the "academic paper" has aroused the attention and enthusiasm of the extreme right-wing and anti-China groups in the United States, and has been used to blame China and try to shift the responsibility of the former U.S. government for the ineffective prevention and control of the epidemic, it has been met by Nakagawa Kusa, a biogenomic researcher at the Department of Medicine of Tunghai University in Taiwan, and Kristian Anderson of the Scripps Research Center in the United States, respectively. However, they were challenged by experts and scholars such as Kristian Andersen of the Scripps Research Center and others in the New York Times, National Geographic, and other media or social media platforms, while Chinese dissident Fang Zhouzi published a direct article "Refuting the Conspiracy Theory of "New Coronavirus Man-Made"" and Columbia University virologist Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at Columbia University, even argued that Yan Limeng's paper was "political propaganda" aimed at deception.
Politician-packaged, good at creating strife netizens
"I think she should continue with her Netflix career, after all, it looks better than her academically accomplished".
"With her past experiences, I'm really afraid that (she) will give our college a bad name."
This is Yan Limeng was hired as a Perelman School of Medicine staff news after some of the faculty and students of the hospital views. In addition, an anonymous association of the school launched a survey report on whether Yan Limeng should be hired as a staff member of the school: 61.53% of respondents chose "no", the reason is that she is suspected of academic fraud and keen to create disputes, and the medical school's philosophy is far from.
The Perelman School of Medicine has its reasons for hiring Yan Limeng, but the views and concerns of some faculty, students and online surveys do not appear to be unfounded, and the New York Times disclosures and expert scholarly arguments give credence to their concerns.
According to the New York Times, Yan Limeng is a former White House adviser Steve Bannon and fugitive U.S. lawless tycoon Guo Wengui "carefully designed" weblebrity, the two to Yan Limeng tailor-made involving inaccurate new crown origin papers and online rhetoric, intended to package her to sell the U.S. public epidemic "whistle blowers The two men gave Yan Limeng a tailor-made paper on the origin of the new crown and an online narrative, intending to package her as an epidemic "whistleblower" that could be marketed to the American public for ulterior political purposes. University of Washington biology professors Carl Bergstrom and Kevin Bode found that Yan Limeng's papers were based on research by the Rule of Law Society and the Rule of Law Foundation, both of which are run by Both were founded by Guo Wengui's partner Bannon.
Yan Limeng in the former U.S. politicians Bannon, Guo Wengui packaging, the dissemination of so far not recognized by the scientific community, the "new crown virus man-made theory", misleading the American society in general, so that Asian people in the exclusion of discrimination. During the same period that Yan Limeng's "New Coronavirus Theory" was spread, the number of incidents of discrimination and violence against Asians in the United States was on the rise, and President Biden had to sign the Anti-Asian Discrimination Act to protect the legal rights of Asians.
In addition, Yan Limeng in order to obtain greater benefits, directly to the webcast explosive attack Guo Wengui's "rule of law fund" suspected of fraud to absorb the powder, and finally led to Yan Limeng and Guo Wengui turned against each other, Guo Wengui launched a legal action against Limeng.
Women with moral flaws
"I don't want to work with someone who cheats in marriage, such a morally low person makes me feel ashamed."
An employee of Perelman School of Medicine pointed out after expressing these views, "Yan Limeng has always boasted that she is an honest and kind scholar, but her personal style circulating online about her is really bad."
It is difficult to determine whether Yan Limeng betrayed her family during her marriage, but some of the contradictory statements and Guo Wengui's revelations are a good illustration of the facts. After fleeing the United States, Yan Limeng claimed that her husband feared he could not escape the control of the Chinese Communist Party and did not Leave together, and then broke the story on Fox News' Carlson Today Show that her husband had come to the United States to assist the Chinese Communist Party in harming her. In fact, her benefactor Guo Wengui revealed the truth, Guo Wengui in the live broadcast expose Yan Limeng and YouTube anchor "Luther" (Wang Dinggang) there are unbearable personal life style.
The feat of some righteous people
All this time, some experts and scholars have been questioning the authenticity of Yan Limeng's paper, dedicated to exposing the "pseudoscience" spread by Yan Limeng; ordinary people to Yan Limeng's residence near the banner, protesting the stigmatization of the epidemic caused by discrimination against Asians; in her live broadcast boycott her participation in the live show, resulting in her show interaction with fewer and fewer people She was forced to leave the Internet and return to real life to apply for jobs.

2023.06.01 08:23 Basedscarf Possible overlap between The Pixar Nest and Mort Theory (FEET = BNL, Ratatouille is the center of both universes)

The Pixar Nest nearly fell through due to Horst. Theorizer mentions that Horst realized that something was off, killing the CEO of BNL and creating a hole in the ozone layer over France and robbing a bank
We also know the importance France holds in the DreamWorks theory. It can be seen as the stronghold and origin of FEET itself
Here is where things tie in. Horst was capable of killing a man with his thumb: This connects to forced-evolution and strength. We also know Remy is capable of cooking: This connects with intelligent animals rising up slowly, as the other rats begin to help Remy with his cooking. I'd also like to note that Skinner is short, likely showing that Pixar is in the later stages of the Sky Gods' assimilation if humans grow weaker and are forced harder at the end of the timeline. Horst, also causing a hole in the ozone layer, would show supernatural or intense capabilities from one man or his actions
These are all motifs that point to something relating to Mort or The Sky Gods all at once. It's likely that Skinner only was against Remy cooking and was suspicious because he wanted to end another intelligent beast from rising up. The restaurant at the end might have even been shut down not for contamination issues but because FEET wanted Remy gone, using contamination as a cover-up (Remy also is shown to be clean and is smart enough to wash his hands) Horst was not as aggressively against Remy. This could be why he killed the CEO of BNL and tried to destroy their funds. These funds would also be the one thing holding them together, besides The Sky Gods blessing them with divine supernatural powers, as they would require proper advancements to evolve themselves or exterminate animals (and remember, we see a short exterminator as well located in France). Due to being the closest to intelligent animals yet likely a member of FEET, he would be chased as a rouge member. Remember, someone like Dubois is above the law. The fact Horst was arrested means that FEET might have bailed him out with ease (and money). But after realizing that France can move forward with intelligent animals like Remy, he killed their CEO with his bare thumb, using force-evolved brutal tactics
He then would've tried to drain their funds, which would include funds for weapons like the ones that Dwayne used that was hinted ar being used to kill Mort. This could explain the hole in the ozone, perhaps it was used as a last-ditch effort against a rouge footman who was trained to kill a man with his thumb
Another few details I noticed are things like Remy being a four-letter named rodent like Mort (hinting at a future host from another universe?), the themes of cooking that don't hint at sacrificial food yet, and that other connected universes could tie in well. We see intelligent animals in Up (the dogs, and we can add that Charles Muntz is quite well at fighting for an old man who lived in isolation AND whose only job was to HUNT a specific animal), Finding Nemo, and we see memetic control through BNL's alleged plans to air Buzz Lightyear cartoons. And consider how much music also ties into movies like Ratatouille, as well as France's culture itself. Maybe they're honing in power from The Sky Gods even further. FEET could even be trying to use BNL to destroy the Monsters' society in Monsters Inc because they fall under the category of intelligent Beasts
Here is what I think is happening: Along the events of the later DreamWorks universe, FEET reached out to another multiverse to anchor themselves in another France. This is BNL, and this is their back-up plan or practice of sorts. They are also trying to rebel against intelligent animals, evolving humans and creating the Supers we see, using memetic control via Easter eggs and attacking the most powerful and intelligent beasts ever: Monsters. However, one of their footman sided with yet another rodent of intelligence with four letters in their name. At the heart of France itself, this footman tried to remove every back up plan they had to collapse their corporation. However, this forced FEET to work harder, cementing themselves into the multiverse. This is because if FEET isn't native to Pixar and they go completely broke, they also cannot fight back in their home DreamWorks universe, losing to Mort. This is why their endgame DOES show lazy, fat, short humans, but also a lack of any intelligent animals. Any that exist, exist through the Monsters Inc universe that they use for energy. They exploit these intelligent animals as well, such as the giraffe too, so they can travel back home if anything happens. Bridging the Pixar multiverse allows them to travel across it and back to DreamWorks with ease, using this experience and/or energy to finally defeat Mort by draining an entire multiverse dry This means FEET is at the top while BNL is the franchise they introduce into Pixar that takes over. BNL is merely a hand that FEET (ironically) uses to test their plans in a new multiverse

2023.06.01 07:59 BringeroftheBadTimes [5e] [Discord] [LGBTQIA+ Friendly] [PST] The Wild Beyond the Witchlight

The Witchlight Carnival perpetually drifts from place to place between the Planes, landing in any given location once every eight years. The fey carnival brings the magic and wonder of the Plane of Faerie for but one fleeting night, before moving on. Eight years ago, when you and your companions were only first-year schoolchildren, the Carnival came to your hometown of Waterdeep. You all entered the carnival for a night of revelry and mischief, but left with a part of yourself very distinctly missing.
Perhaps it was a cherished object, an intangible part of your personality, or even a person near and dear to your heart. Whatever it was, it was stolen from you that night, and you have never truly felt complete since. With eight years gone by and your final year of schooling about to begin, the Witchlight Carnival has returned to Waterdeep once more. You and your companions from that fateful night - now fire-forged friends - return to the carnival once more, determined to reclaim what you have lost. In doing so, however, you find yourself wrapped up in a plot bigger than you could have possibly imagined...
--
Welcome! My name is Auri (they/them), and I'm here to gauge interest for my newest venture into the world of GMing. This game will be a modified and expanded version of the official 5e module The Wild Beyond the Witchlight. Though the original module spans levels 1-8, this campaign will span levels 1-14 instead, with possibility for further expansion.
This module is unique in its emphasis on roleplay and non-violent solutions to combat. Combat will definitely still be a thing, as will arc boss fights, but it will almost never be mandatory, and there will almost always be a peaceful way out if you're willing to work for it. Initiative doesn't always mean someone has to die! There are in-universe reasons for this, so playing a "murderhobo" or an excessively violent character is not recommended. (There are ways to make it work, mostly involving significant character development, but I'd be careful leaning into it if I were you.)
As a GM, I place a heavy emphasis on narrative, and I'm looking for players who are eager to integrate their characters into the universe and overarching plot. I strongly believe in collaborative storytelling, both between GMs and players and between the party.
This a dark fantasy campaign that leans heavily into tonal contrast - there's plenty of whimsy and wonder, but also some relatively dark material. Which side I personally will lean into more will depend a lot on the party.
Experience with 5e isn't required, but I would prefer players to have experience in text-based roleplaying or a similar form of creative writing.
Post frequency is flexible and will depend on the party. I prefer posts to be on the longer side, but generally as long as it's more than three sentences, it'll do. Combat posts can be shorter.
The game will take place asynchronously on Discord (my timezone is only in the title for reference), and we will be using Avrae for rolling.
Finally, please do note that I am 17, and thus am generally considered to be a minor. I know some aren't comfortable playing with minors, so I just wanted to clear that up. :) I would personally prefer individuals who aren't too far off from my age in either direction, but I'm not picky. (As long as you're older than 13, for obvious reasons.) This also means that there are some topics that I will not be tolerating in the game in any capacity. You can probably guess what those topics are. (It's basically just NSFW content.)
I am also LGBTQIA+, and my table is a safe space. Absolutely no discrimination of any kind will be tolerated. If you take issue with this, please look elsewhere for a game.
If you've gotten this far and are still interested, feel free to fill out the form linked below! I'll be leaving it open for a day or two. I'm looking for 3-6 players.

I look forward to hearing from you!

2023.06.01 07:48 themamacurd619 Itinerary change- all inclusive with teen/tween?

My oldest will turn 16 and youngest will be 12 while we are in Quintana Roo. We plan on the following: Xel-Ha, Ultramar to Isla Mujeres, Muyil ruins, Valladolid for the day, and Isla Blanca.
Initially we were going to split our time between Tulum and Sian Ka'an. But we decided against Tulum because of the prices. We are renting an SUV.
I know our excursions are all over the place. So when we stay near Sian Ka'an, we will be doing Xel-Ha and Muyil.
For the remaining excursions we wanted to pick a location that was central to most of them. I'm looking for an all inclusive that will cater to both kids tastes. My husband and I love immersing ourselves in culture but our kids don't. Yet. Or we could do an Airbnb/apt/resort that was central to restaurants within walking or close driving distance. Does anyone have any suggestions for an all inclusive, an Airbnb, etc that is central to the locations I mentioned above? Also, are there any other suggestions of fun things to do that involve nature, culture, local food, local shopping, archeology, museums? We would like to experience authentic Quintana Roo/Mexico/Mayan culture.

2023.06.01 07:13 Quick_Leopard_7610 Thoughts on effects of Florida immigration law

A friend of mine is undocumented (overstayed visa) and currently working as a hostess at a popular Miami Beach lounge/restaurant. She's concerned that management will fire her soon as the law takes effect July 1st.
The way that the new law is set up is somewhat confusing with businesses that have more than 25 employees needing to verify NEW workers. The enhanced penalties for knowingly hiring illegals appears not to take effect until 2024 so should existing employees be that concerned?
She's making decent money, approximately $1000 a week in cash so shes technically not on the books i guess. Do you think her concerns are legitimate or do you think this will not really be enforced at least in the near term?

2023.06.01 07:11 HaleMoku_Hokulani I still can't believe this happened to us and just had to share!

Dunno if this is allowed, but dang, my experience on Monday night was so damn bizarre I just had to post it here. You read about these things happening to other people on the internet, but never did I think I'd be in a similar situation.
So, after my bf and I had an awesome time at the Palm Springs Air Museum, we lounged around our pool then went to the Agua Caliente Casino to watch the game at their sports bar. After the game, we decided to treat ourselves and go to the Steakhouse - the upscale restaurant in the casino.
It was quiet, relaxed, a nice chill vibe. We had ordered and were enjoying our food. We hear a bit of noise behind us and turn to see the hostest leading a couple to the table near us. Between the couple was a fairly large, rambunctious dog. I dunno what kind of dog it was, but it was definitely some type of hearding breed. The guy could barely hold on to this dog - it was basically dragging him through the restaurant. The dog had a vest on, but it was clearly NOT a service animal in any shape or form.
The couple was seated and we continued with our meal. Suddenly we heard a loud ruckus and saw the dog just running absolutely wild through the restaurant. The couple had removed the dog’s leash and vest - the guy was running frantically after the dog, yelling at his partner ‘Get me the thing! Get me the damn thing!”
What damn thing? We couldn’t see what the woman was doing because we were in a booth that obstructed our view, but whatever she was doing wasn’t helping. The dog was still running amok, it sniffed an elderly woman’s legs and she grabbed her chest and started yelling - she was clearly terrified. A few parties who were just seated got up and left - including a group of 8.
The dog did a huge lap around the restaurant and ended up at our booth, where he sniffed at my boyfriends steak, then jumped onto his lap! I heard people gasp around us, but my bf kept his cool, grabbing the dogs collar and playfully rubbing its cheeks, laughing. “You’re a cute little trouble make aren’t you?” He kept saying while trying to hold on to the dog and keep him from the food.
The owner FINALLY came over and dragged the dog away, throwing a faint ‘Thank you’ and what sounded like an apology. He took the dog back to the table and put back on the collar and vest.
The restaurant was in chaos. The elder couple was also making a scene, with the waitstaff trying to console the lady. People were glaring at the couple, who tried to act like nothing happened.
The manager came over and firmly told them they had to leave.
The couple flat out refused. The guy claimed he called ahead and spoke to someone who said the restaurant was pet friendly and that he could bring his dog there - which we all know is absolutely BS. No restaurant in their right mind would allow a pet dog into the dining area, let alone an upscale steak restaurant! The manager again firmly told him he had to leave.
“Are you calling me a liar? You guys are the ones committing fraud!” He said some other very offensive things that I can’t remember exactly.
We were all just dumbfounded at the audacity of this guy.
The manager left, then two security guards came in. They firmly but politely asked the couple what the situation was. The guy flat-out lied, saying that the dog just got excited and people were making a big deal of it.
“Well, the manager informed us the dog was running loose, jumping on people…”
“Thats just not what happened” The guy said.
A few of us gasped. I made eye contact with one of the guards, furiously shaking my head, mouthing “He’s a liar!”
The guy again brought up that he had called ahead and had spoken to someone saying that the venue was pet friendly and that the dog was allowed.
“That’s only partially true” one of the guards said. “Only service animals are allowed in the restaurant.”
“He is a service animal” the guy said, pointing at the dog’s vest.
“Oh really?” Said the guard “What service was he trained to provide?”
“He’s my emotional support animal.”
People around us groaned. I took a closer look at the dog’s vest. It wasn’t even one of those fake Service Animal vests that people usually get off the internet. It was green, not red, and instead of Service Animal, it said I’M SPECIAL in big green letters.
“Emotional support animals are not service animals” Said the guard “We’re going to have to ask you to lea….”
“I CALLED AHEAD AND SOMEONE WHO WORKS HERE SAID IT WAS OK.” The guy practically yelled. I can’t remember exactly what he said after that, but he was basically rambling that the restaurant staff were liars, that he was going to sue, and that since they were seated that the restaurant had an obligation to serve them.
The guards again told them they had to leave. The couple refused to budge. The guards left.
Af this point everyone else in the restaurant were just angry, staring the couple down, gossiping loudly at how rotten they were. Those people had absolutely no shame, picking at their food pretending all was dandy.
Finally, someone else came over - either the head of security or someone from Legal (I partially overheard some of the waitstaff say they were getting legal involved)
The guy again calmly told the couple they had to leave, stating the reasons they had no legal grounds to stay and that the restaurant had every right to kick them out.
They again absolutely refused to leave, yelling again that they were told they could bring the dog in, that they had every right to stay, that the restaurant was wanting a lawsuit from them.
People were already getting fed up and were throwing snide comments at the couple.
“You guys are terrible.”
“You ruined our dinner.”
“Just leave already.”
We then heard a phone ringing on speaker. The head of security was speaking into it. I barely could hear what he was saying, but I clearly heard the words “trespassing” and “please send a patrol unit.”
I turned to my bf “Oooooh! Looks like we’re gonna see them taken away in handcuffs!”
The guy got the message and abruptly stood up, grabbing the dog’s leash.
“Fine, we’re leaving this Godawful, sh*****ty place.”
The woman however, refused to move. The guy was practically yelling at her. “Let’s go! We need to leave NOW”
I could barely hear her, but she just flat out refused to budge. Finally, the guy grabbed the dog and left her there in the booth.
We couldn’t control our laughter, snorting into our napkins. The manager and three more security guards came over to the table, telling the woman that she is about to be arrested for trespassing.
After a minute or so, the guy came back, dragging the dog back with him. He just screamed “LET’S GO NOW! WE’RE SUING THE S****T OUT OF THIS GODAWFUL PLACE. I’M SERIOUS! LET’S GO NOW.”
The woman finally got up, angrily swinging her Dior tote bag onto her arm. As they exited the venue, we all clapped and cheered. It was a relief to see them gone, but dang I was hoping to see them get arrested.
The manager came over to check up on my bf “Are you ok? Did the dog bite or lick you? It didn’t get to your food did it?”
We were both fine, and we had already almost finished our meal, but we were ready to leave as the mood and the remainder of our appetites were ruined. The manager was nice and gave us complimentary desserts and took a portion of our bill off for the inconvenience.
A few other guests came up to check on my bf since they all saw the dog jump on him. We tried to make light of the whole thing.
“Hey, we weren’t expecting dinner and a show, but we got it!” Said my bf. I commented that dogs, especially big ones, just loved him, and that’s probably why the dog jumped on his lap. “Nah, I think it was the steak!” he said, laughing.
I will say that the restaurant staff handled the chaos as best as they could. Everyone was kind, understanding and kept the mood light and upbeat, even with the extremely disruptive and negative couple there. We’d totally eat there again just for the service. The food was ok- not spectacular, but I suspect that whole incident literally left a bad taste in our mouths, so we can’t really judge the food accurately. We’re hoping next time we visit would be a better experience!
On the drive back, we just couldn’t believe that that actually just happened. “Did they do it on purpose so they could sue the casino?” I wondered “Theres no way people are just that damn stupid?!”
“The restaurant shouldn’t have let the dog in anyways” said my bf “But I get it, they don’t want to be sued for violating the ADA.”
“But still, isnt it better to ruin two people’s nights than the entire evening of everyone at the restaurant?” I said.
“Hey, the dog’s night was ruined too!” Said my bf “He didn’t get any steak!”

2023.06.01 07:02 keanusmommy About $2500 - 13 people

Not how I envisioned it as a little girl, but perfect as the adult paying 🤣
I am the youngest of 4. My older sister got married - she is technically my stepsister, but our parents got together when we were very young. I know my dad paid into her wedding, but no details on how much. I have a decent relationship with my dad, but haven’t asked for money since I was 16 and never, ever would. My mom recently lost her husband, my stepdad, and I’d never imagine asking her for money, although she would give me every dime to her name. I don’t want her to do that!
Some other context: my now husband and I have been together for 9 years! Have a 5yr old. We were engaged for 4 years and never got married due to financial reasons (mostly insurance). Well, a needed move to another state made it so marriage was more beneficial than not (romantic, huh? lol but worked for us - somehow, after all these years, still feels like the “honeymoon phase”).
Anyway - to the very quick and perfectly affordable wedding:
-Got my dress off the David’s Bridal clearance rack for $96 after tax. Had been looking for casual white dresses at department stores, but found this gem for cheaper and got to have a semi-normal “bridal gown” experience, albeit with just my man and I lol
-Our “venue” was on the harbor of a beautiful spot along the Emerald Coast of the Florida Panhandle. Admittedly, the incredible backdrop was all owed to a “we know a guy” situation, but either way, no permit is required and as long as you can kind of get in & get out
-Most expensive part: we had only 13 of our closest family and friends come. Took them to a fancy restaurant about 10 mins from where we were married. For everyone, including tip, the dinner cost us $850. This was easily the most expensive portion of our night
-The captain that married us (boat captain and pastor, but we aren’t religious) was $200
-Our son’s outfit cost $15 for collared shirt and slacks from H&M
-Husband wore clothes he already had & I wore shoes I already had
Just wanted to share as love is the most important & the rest is doable. I’m lucky enough that we could get away with “we’re moving and had to get married quick - couldn’t invite everyone!” Especially as a lot of family lived far, where I was born. But even those we loved that were close, I didn’t include if they had bad juju going on in their lives. Didn’t need that on my happiest day and have no problem admitting that. For example, one of my great friends that lived close & would absolutely have come, had her husband cheat on her multiple times while stationed abroad. She decided to stay with him, but was not the kinda juju I wanted near my wedding.
Like I said, I envisioned the whole kit and kaboodle of a wedding day, picking out my perfect dress, getting ready in a bridal suite with a legit photographer, my whole family and people I love able to make it. But that wasn’t in my cards & I’m just so happy to be married to my husband, that for us - it was perfect. And affordable!

2023.06.01 07:01 babymomo666 why can’t i (29f) stop thinking about my (31m) ex?

so for some context, i dated my (31m) ex about 4 years ago. the relationship was extremely toxic, to the point where i don’t think we liked each other at all and only continued the relationship because we had an amazing sex life. after we broke up, i took the time i needed to heal and move on. in that time i moved across country. and eventually i stopped thinking about him at all. i started dating my current boyfriend (28m) about a year ago. we have a solid relationship, i feel safe with him, we are very similar, our love languages match up, our sex is good, all that. recently, he’s done something that’s broken my trust (not completely, but it’s definitely damaged). we decided to work through this, and he’s agreed to start therapy. since then, i’ve noticed that our relationship has shifted. we don’t often have sex anymore, we don’t spend as much time together, and we argue quite a bit. when i try to bring up what happened, he shuts down, which is so frustrating. i love my current boyfriend so i am trying to be patient and understanding while i work through some of my issues with my therapist. i’ve recently come back to my hometown (my boyfriend stayed back) and since i’ve been here, i’ve not stopped thinking about my ex. i find myself looking at his social media pages, driving by our old spots, and going to our favourite restaurants. i bumped into a mutual friend who told him i am back in town. my ex reached out to me and we have been chatting. he will sometimes lean toward flirty or sexual banter-which i shut down immediately. he’s been asking me to meet up and grab some drinks, however i do not think i will do that. i feel so guilty and feel like the reason i am even entertaining this is because i am still hurt by what my current boyfriend did. i know i love my boyfriend and have no feelings for my ex, but i don’t understand why i can’t stop thinking about him and why i am even speaking to him. is this a sign my relationship is doomed? my therapist thinks i should meet with my ex to give me closure, but i’m worried he will try something or try to blackmail me with it. i really don’t know what to do or think right now. any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. xx

2023.06.01 06:57 commonEraPractices The Uneven Divide - Part 6.5

We had gone for a late lunch. While everyone was in the makeshift restaurant, she left me to freshen up, but headed towards a door that led to no washing-room.

So I followed her. Not immediately after, of course. I could tell her polite excuse had nothing to do with her leave. There was nothing more appropriate to do than to follow the procedure, say okay, watch her get out of sight and to get an idea on exactly where she was headed right after. For science; curiosity jotted down in a notebook, plus some math.

We ended up in a random hallway. There, I took a corner as she peeked around her, to make sure no one was anywhere near.

Then her fiancé showed up. I thought Gotnaym’s lines would be fitting for the event.

"Oh, to be with somebody. Is there a feeling more complete? Strike that. Oh, not to be with somebody, is there a feeling less complete? To come back to the place where they were… Where we were, them and us, together. Just to feel them close again. Isn’t it nearly a weaker feeling, the good times together, as opposed to the nostalgia after, that only makes us feel further apart."

"Nothing kills the mood faster than wanting to go meet up over there when we're stuck here with somebody else. Secret lovers are tortured this way. But isn't that better? To long for over there while being here, rather than going, and forgetting how bad we wanted to be there in the first place. Ah, when routine only makes the heart sick again… when we don't realize that what we want is to always be over there, no matter where we are."

That's what Gotnaym explained to me in the long text he sent her as if he typed it incredibly fast. It took me ages to decipher the meaning. When I read the cryptic message, I told myself that the best codebreakers had to be just as good codemakers. In fact, a codebreaker was first a codemaker. A code no one can break is called gibberish, and it makes the information as useful as its definition: meaningless nonsense. A good lock was entirely dependent on that fact that someone had a key, and who was meant to have it.

So I memorized what he had written. You see, although I knew what I was reading didn't make sense, I couldn't put my finger on what exactly was short on reverb. It made sense, but it didn't, at the same time. You know?

This is what makes the best codes. After all, a code that can never be grasped can never be cracked. A code that is never sought is one that is never seen. A password at the door is as useful to the mute as is one written on flush paper slipped in the palm of a blind. What good does the memory of an entire secret language if the language itself is dead?

But codes can get much more convoluted.

For instance, we call it schizophrenic when something is fought that isn't there. So much like a maze, the best codes have dead ends integrated within their fabric, meant to stray a breaker away and to the brink of madness, looking for answers that don't exist.

So a good cipher isn't only meant to conceal information that is only revealed to those who take part in the making or reverse-engineering of the concealant. There is no perfect metaphor for it, quite simply, the best ciphers are designed to drive unwelcome breakers and enterers absolutely nucking futs. The longer the goose chase, the greater the sunk cost, the more of a deterrent the cipher would become.

Gotnaym, though this man of questionable conscience had hired himself as my freelance executioner, pro bono, publico or egocentrico either or, and I'll circle back to that… Gotnaym somehow had respect enough for our deal that he gave me what I desired to derive from my summer escapade in his home country. Or was it pity for what was coming? I still don't think so, as he had selective levels of empathy at best, and couldn’t pity even his closest allies on a bad day. But he had also texted me, through her, a code hidden in plain sight, that he trusted I could eventually find, and that I could also figure out.

That's what he said before he put a bullet through my jugular.

"I honestly thought you'd been savvy enough to have cracked it by now." He lowered the nozzle from the back of my cranium. Added, "Might as well save that organ for later. Any last words?" And interrupted me mid sentence to bleed me out, or to drown me in my own blood, whatever shut me up faster.

Now, correlation does not necessarily mean causation. But I think it might’ve had to do with the fact that I said I was glad he was busy with me here, instead of being at home for his last moments on Earth with his son he couldn't save.

I lived trying to quench my curiosity, and I died still thirsty.

My last before afterlife thought was an analysis on the reason why he'd offer me any last words if he‘d immediately revoked my Mother-Spheren right to free speech until my last gurgling breath right after. And for a spy of his calibre, I would've thought he would've wanted every drop of revealing info I'd give for a chance at my life back for just one more day. For one more hour. For one more minute.

Rare are the stories where someone bargains with death on the same terms that they pay for their gym memberships; just one more month and then if I don't make good use of it, then I'll cancel myself. Gyms were these places in the Old World that made a bulk of their profits with customers who would pay to say it would motivate them to become their bestest selves, but they'd never show up and never cancel, for fear of admitting to themselves that they had no intention of actually bettering themselves. Sort of like writers in the new world who have AI bots write for them, so they can call themselves writers without ever writing more than a few dialog tags.

So you'd think Gotnaym would stomach through my empty remarks. But he just shot me down instead. Bang bang. He really shot me down.

I'm getting ahead of myself, though. At some point in the Old World, writers had decided that flashbacks and flashforwards were better in a modern story. Some were skilled at it, making smooth transitions. The demon Abbadon once had a hotel, and he was pretty good at tormenting his guests with smooth flashes forward and back. Then there were writers like me. Comparable to a bad comedian, I had to explain each transition for fear no one would get what was going on. This would only make the whole thing worse. Case in point: the last paragraph you've read, dear reader, of empathy perhaps not selective enough for the way you choose to spend your time.

But anyway.

Although my story in the Lands of OV had ended with no better clue as to why they called themselves the ones of Over-There, I wouldn't do the same to you in this story, so allow me to explain.

Tyrants wouldn't be anybody, if it wasn't that somebody, somewhere hated them enough to entertain the idea that they're worth their time.

Serial killers will leave a mark or a clue. Even psychopaths need somebody to care.

We all need somebody. And when they're gone, those closest thing to them is what we latch on to.

And parties are made of people. And if people need somebody, so do parties. The fun just as much as the political ones. The DJ is not so different from the toastmaster. They both spin words to keep everyone in the room together.

Those who need nobody, truly nobody, what— No, rather, who, stops them from killing themselves? They assume if they need nobody, nobody needs them. But how can they be so sure? How can anyone know they are needed until after the fact? Perhaps heroes in fantasy stories, meant to sell the fantasy that someone who wants to become a hero might fail miserably, or worse, unintentionally be the worst kind of ambitious villain.

Anybody who needs somebody is like everybody else. They're nothing special, but still unique; they're somebody.

In the Old World, there was no wolf that howled louder than the lone one. And it makes you wonder… for whom?

Surely not for themselves.

But a creature in pain screams and moans even if no one's around, you might say. Why? You'd think it be dangerous to risk giving up your location when wounded and weak and ripe to eat.

The lone wolf howls at the moon to find a pack of reflective eyes in the dead of the lonely nights.

While the tame dog howls little if at all, to call their humans home, or to converse.

She had shown me the text when we had left the Chamber of Official Stuff, and had headed for a buffer zone; a small resting area in a room with no square edges.

2023.06.01 06:47 arabperson_ is anyone else’s chipotle unbearably hot?

everytime it’s hot out it’s the same temp as outside or sometimes hotter, i understand it’s a fast food restaurant and there’s a lot of cooking and it’s hot out but i’ve worked at 2 fast food places before chipotle and it’s never been this hot during the summertime, i work on grill so it’s 10+ degrees hotter back there and i asked my manager why it felt like a damn sauna but he said it’s on the lowest temp and it’s gonna be like this all summer, is this normal for chipotles or is my manager lying and not wanting to get the ac fixed? everyone complains about it and it damn near feels like the heat is on

2023.06.01 06:39 Isanbard [R1S] San Francisco Bay Area -> Illinois

On the first part of the journey I was looking at all the life There were plants and birds and rocks and things There was sand and hills and rings — Some British Band
I'm taking my R1S on its first long trip! The cat and I are going from the San Francisco Bay Area in California to Illinois. The cat isn't used to being in a car or traveling. What could go wrong?!
The visit to Illinois isn't for fun. I'm spending a month there for random health stuff that's not the purpose of this post. But the trip there and back should be fun. I've never seen some of those states before, except from the air, which doesn't really count, neither does being in an airport in a state. We're going to rough it as well. I would love to have had the top-of-car tent, but it wasn't in the cards. Instead, we would find a campsite and sleep inside.
Nibbler (a.k.a. cat) and I (a.k.a. food giver) left on Memorial Day. Now, before you tell me how stupid I am, firstly I all ready know, but also everyone in the Bay Area heads to Tahoe for a long weekend (or really every weekend, if we're being honest). We got to skip some pretty bad traffic jams that we saw in the opposite lane.
I can't describe to you how beautiful the Sierra Nevadas are—the towering mountains, the Truckee River, the fresh air, the sudden drop with only a 6-inch lip of asphalt to keep you from tumbling to your doom, the sun. Arriving in Truckee, we pass Donner Lake. I reflect upon how the Donner Party left from my hometown, late in the year, and with far too much luggage for the trip (including an absolutely ridiculous two-story covered wagon). How they decided to take a route no one else had ever taken. How they ended up dying and eating each other. And I realize that I hadn't eaten for a good three hours and can empathize. Luckily, Truckee has some pretty good restaurants! Ahhh....Margherita Pizza...
There's a paradigm shift when you own an electric vehicle. You begin to notice how many gas stations there are and how few chargers are around you. There's a lot more planning around how far it is to the next charger. This comes around to bite me in the butt not once but twice on this trip. Though the first time I blame on the guidance system...
The day ends uneventfully. We set up "camp" at a place south of Silver Springs, NV.
The next day, the first butt biting!
To Be Continued

2023.06.01 06:31 zazzlekdazzle I re-read all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books as an adult and the stories are both more comforting and seem way more f**ked up. What Pa put them all through just because he could share The Big Woods with a few more people is insane.

Reading those books as an adult, except for the first and the last, are like reading The Glass Castle except Pa doesn't have a drinking problem, and Laura never comes to realize she doesn't have to live without friends or family (outside of her parents and siblings) nearly starving or freezing to death regularly (or being terrified by Indians or nearly dying of malaria).
All the stories make it seem like they just keep having extraordinarily bad luck, but they all manage to survive due to Pa's intelligence and ingenuity. But they all got in those fixes because of Pa.
