2023.06.01 16:47 KaptainM4dness Hidden defect or my fault? [QC/CANADA]

I bought a used vehicle about a month ago (6 weeks) from a used car dealer. It's a 2009 Nissan Sentra with 112,000 kilometers (70k miles) on it. It had only one previous owner before me, and I was aware of some minor repairs that needed to be done. The overall condition of the car was not too concerning. In the first month, I only drove it about 600 kilometers (370 miles) and didn't use it much for no specific reason.
I took the car to my mechanic to get the known repair done, which the seller had informed me about. No big deal.
However, after inspection, the mechanic informed me that the top priority was to change the tires because they are 18 years old! They were manufactured in 2005, according to the serial number.
When I inspected the vehicle with the seller, the tires appeared to be in good condition visually, with a tread depth of 6/32.
However, the mechanic explained that it is very dangerous not because of the tire's current condition, but due to the age of the tire. Over time, the rubber can dry out and lead to tire failure.
The mechanic strongly recommended replacing the tires immediately.
He also mentioned that it is quite rare for people to check the age of a tire using the serial number, as most individuals rely on visual inspection to determine their condition.
My question is, is it entirely my fault or could this be considered a hidden defect that the seller failed to mention?

2023.06.01 16:41 sanguine_siamese Rural Mainers: What's your commute like?

My partner and I are tired of renting and want to try to buy property somewhere in the next few years. We've always lived near decent-sized towns or cities, but the price of land in all the places we've lived is outside of our price range.
I'm curious to know:
Where do you live? (General area ok for anonymity 👍) What type of work do you do? How far is your work from your house? How far do you travel for groceries? What do you like about your area? What don't you like?
Thanks, all. Happy summer!

So what can be deviated when it comes to tire sizes? My stock size is 265/50/20. I know the 20 can’t cause it’s the rim size but what about the others and if so how much of a deviation can you make. I’m always on the lookout for used and new takeoffs and there’s none in my exact size but there’s ones close. Like there’s a set of new takeoffs in 265/60/20 and another in 275/50/20. Thanks!

All feedback on tunes is appreciated - good or bad. Specially when tunes are bad. At the end of the day I am just the mechanic and you guys are the racers. Do not hesitate irrespective of your tuning knowledge or racing skills!
Tuning method: 1. Stock look - stock wheel rims, default wheel rim sizes, no aero (unless absolutely necessary for handling and stability) 2. Max performance with max handling possible 3. All cars tuned vs. Unbeatable AI on championship tracks in seasonal weather. However! Unbeatable AI is broken and bugged. Not every car can win 7/10 random races vs Unbeatable AI without abusing rewind/restart. Very few cars can beat it consistently. Hope it gets fixed soon one day... 4. Bodykit only used if it does not ruin performance

Put myself in a ‘Coma yesterday. Somebodies finance didn’t work out on this ‘23 TRD sport with long bed and I jumped on it quick. I wasn’t a fan of white right away but it is growing on me. I am absolutely going to throw some wheels and tires on it but still can’t decide on size or if I want to lift or just level. Any insight is appreciated.

2023.06.01 16:03 TouristFew4907 what are some good tire replacements for a mountain bike?

to give more info and context, the mountain bike has it's original tires. however while it was in use, the tube exploded, and took the tire along with it. I am looking for a bike tire replacement that can do well in the city and maybe maximise speed and minimise rolling resistance. are there any recommendations for a tire replacement? the original bike tire size on the mountain bike is 26 x 1.95

2023.06.01 15:54 CarterCreations061 Cave Dwellers - A Tale of Human Discovery

Doctor Hiestand crouched down on the rough floor of the cavern. The air was damp and heavy. Her assistant handed her a flashlight that she used to scan the rocky floor, ceiling, and walls carefully.
“What do you think?” the Doctor asked.
“It's a lava cave,” researcher Isalamp clacked.
“Strange, though, don’t you think?”Isalamp was correct. They were on Methuselah’s 42nd moon. The planet they were orbiting was perhaps the oldest in the universe, but the moon seemed young geologically speaking. It was extremely volcanic, the gravitational energy from the gaseous planet below churned the moon’s insides, causing it to shoot out mass and energy with unusual frequency. This, combined with intense solar radiation, made the moon’s surface hot and barren.
The odd thing, though, was that this cave seemed to be covered in cave formations typically found in solution caves. If they were on Earth, Doctor Hiestand would have easily classified them as common limestone formations: stalactites and stalagmites, cave bacon and soda straws.
“Should we take a sample?” Isalamp asked.
“Let's do it. These formations seem to be old. At least a few hundred thousand years. There was lava in this region that should have destroyed them within at least five thousand years, though.”
They filled up collection bags with rock chippings. The pair had brought a chemical analyzer with them. The machine spit out the composition: carbon, calcium, magnesium, titanium.Isalamp held up two of their four hands to their scaly chin, “Strange. It is close to the composition of stones found in much older formations.”
“It's a lithic mystery,” Hiestand said, “we’ll have to send a geology team down sometime.”
They were not that team. They were the biologist, sent to see if there was any life teeming within the crevices of the moon. So far they had found none, even though there was enough energy and material being recycled here that you would think some organic entity would have formed. The pair tugged on their ropes and made the short trek back to the cave entrance. They had a small encampment set up for further analysis.
“I was really hoping we would find a living organism,” Isalamp said, “this part of the universe is so old. Maybe we could have found the oldest lineage in existence.”
“Patience,” the Doctor replied, “we’ve only just started.”
There was more calibrating to do. The pair just couldn’t wait to start exploring. Hiestand had also secretly hoped they would discover some novel species just at the edge of the cave. But now they needed to prepare the lab for the long-term. They unpacked all the equipment and living materials. The seismic detectors and back-up generators; the food processors and farms.
“We need to check the microscope,” the Doctor said.
“What should we use?”
“Here,” Hiestand tossed a bag of the rock sample.
Isalamp caught it in their tentacles, “Maybe there's at least some microbes we can find.”
The Doctor turned and began assembling the coffee maker. She wasn’t sure why they made this machine the most complicated, but it would take time to put all the parts together. Before she had fully unfurled the instructions, though, Isalamp made a sharp cripping noise.
“What's got you so excited?”
“I was just joking earlier. But come take a look! There’s something living in this sample!”
Hiestand leaned over and peered through the microscope. Sure enough, little single-celled aliens were crawling around. They had discovered several new species at one glance. The coffee would have to wait. These creatures had the potential to be the descendants of the first life in the universe. Several billions of years older than anything else so far discovered. Astronomers said that Methuselah--probably along with its many moons--had formed likely within a few hundred million years after the Big Bang.
By lunchtime they had recorded at least forty-six species of microbes. By dinner the number had more than doubled. Over a course of pre-package rations left over from the trip, they discussed the likelihood that a multicellular organism had evolved. The pair decided to get an early start the next day.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An alarm woke Doctor Hiestand up in the morning. WIth two suns and a gas giant in the sky, there was no real consistent astronomical night and day on the moon. She woke Isalamp up excitedly and they prepared to explore more of the cave system. Reconnaissance drones set up the day before had mapped out a large portion of the spiraling branches beneath them already.
They searched for several long hours for some sign of multicellular life. Track marks, fossils, anything that could signal complexity. Eight hours in, Isalamp was becoming discouraged, “What if life here remained simple?”
“It would still be an amazing discovery.”
“Of course. But everyone and their progenitor has discovered some single-celled life. Think of the funding we could get if we brought something ‘cool’ back to mission command.”Another four hours and they were starting to get tired. Doctor Hiestand chipped another sample off of a stalagmite. At the very least they could categorize some more microbes. They returned to their base, hanging up their packs and stretching after a long day.
“Do you want me to examine the new sample?”
“No, it can wait until the morning,” she said as she laid the sample carefully on a table.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hiestand woke up in the middle of the night feeling like she was dying of thirst. Her mouth was dry and clammy. She reached over only to find her water bottle was empty, so she got up and ventured into the make-shift kitchen area of the base.
She drank a full bottle. Still thirsty. After another bottle failed to quench her, she began to worry. The Doctor called Isalamp in from the other bedroom.“Are you alright?”
“I think so. It just feels like I’m a bit dehydrated.”
“Do you think a foreign microbe got on you?”
“I don’t see how. I was extremely careful when I took the sample. And I washed off before re-entering the base.”
“I’ll look at the sample and see if I can tell anything. Where is it?”The Doctor pointed at the nearby table.
“That sample container is broken.”
“What?” Hiestand looked and sure enough, the glass tube had a hole in it. Not only that, but where it had been filled with rocks just a few hours ago, now it was completely empty. It was like the rock had broken out. She picked it up, yes, yes. It was the container she had tagged. She was always careful to mark the containers with the location and date of the sample.
Isalamp stayed up with the Doctor for a couple hours. Eventually the endless thirst subsided and the pair went back to sleep.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“What in the actual hell happened last night?” the Doctor said on her way to get her morning coffee.
“I’m not sure. I can’t question your carefulness,” Isalamp said.
“You sure can’t,” the Doctor replied more harshly than she intended, “I mean. I just sat the container down like this.” She demonstrated by gently putting her coffee mug down on the table.
“Wait,” Isalamp said worriedly, “What is that on your hand?”The Doctor looked. It was… a bite mark? Like three little teeth had tried to suck her blood in the middle of the night. “Let’s suit up.”
Isalamp quickly followed Hiestand’s direction. They searched for a few minutes but quickly found a medium-sized soda straw was now in the corner of their bathroom. It looked almost like the stone had grown there since last night.
The Doctor approached carefully and a small insect-like creature crawled out the top of the straw. She snatched it with tweezers and ran back to the lab to place it in the chemical analysis. The machine outputted a similar reading to the one a few days before: carbon, calcium, magnesium, titanium.
“Do you think the microbes… consumed... the glass? And then grew into those things?”
“I know of no species in the galaxy that can process inorganic materials so fast.”
“Heh, maybe the rocks are organic around here,” Isalamp joked.
“What did you say?”
“I said--” Isalamp paused.
Wordlessly, they got on their exploration gear and descended into the caves again. The pair weren’t sure, but had the rocks moved since they had last been in here? They approached a limestone formation and took several samples. Having gotten all that they could carry, they returned back to the surface.
Under the microscope they could see more microbes. But they had missed something before. The stalactites and stalagmites weren’t purely geological structures, they were living cells themselves. The pair did more analyses and found that the rocks had genetic structures and organelles too.
Over the next few months, a whole team of fifty-plus sapients were gathered to research the heavenly body, now called Hiestand’s moon. It was the first time the astronomical community recognized a phenomenon named after a human outside of the Solar System. Further testing revealed that the living rocks on Hiestand’s Moon were in fact the descendants of the oldest known life in the universe, having evolved probably less than one billion years after the Big Bang.

The effort to dismiss the familiar had knocked Culleo back on his arse and again all he could do was wheeze. "You did issue a command, right? One that it ignored?" Lithia, the younger Lyc prompted. "Yeah, he did. And whatever it was, it wasn't taking orders." Kellista confirmed. "Alright, but before we get ahead of ourselves, is that match over?" Lirren asked, looking over to Kalivine. The Dovkin took a moment before nodding. "I already saw everything I needed, and I'm sure we would all rather focus on this more pressing matter. Get the medbot." Lirren went to do as instructed, and Turri cheerily bounced over, somehow not at all tired from all the exertion from moments ago. "You saw what you needed? That means you have an answer then? How'd they do?" He looked over to the two kobolds who were the entire purpose of the battle. "Their tenacity impressed me. This fight was clearly stacked against them, they knew better than to meet us head on, so they went for a bold strategy." Turri shot Kellista a thumbs up. "I also like how aware they were. Even when locked in combat, you" he nodded to Kellista "were still aware of your surroundings, and managed to help your teammate while minimizing the risk it posed to yourself." Kalivine gave a sigh of relief as the medbot started its work. "And it's rare to see someone cast anything while that exhausted, let alone a summoning." Turri walked over to Culleo. "Hey, ya hear that? Big ole Kal says you're cool!" He said as he pulled the lizard to his feet. Culleo could only huff in response. "Aww he's all tuckered out!" Oh Break you! Culleo tried to curse. "Ho, Huff you" Culleo actually said. "I love you too. So!" Turri said, dropping Culleo with a thump as he turned his attention back to Kalivine. "That mean they're in?" "Not necessarily. As much as they can push, the fact that they needed to push so hard is a major concern. My familiar shouldn't have caused so much trouble, I myself am hardly warmed up, and that summoning, which was at the center of their plan failed so poorly it might have made things even worse for them. I don't like that one bit. Then there's also the matter of how you-" "Oi, Kal! Sorry to interrupt but we got a little somethin' you should see!" Lithia called out.
Turri and Kalivine looked over to where she was standing, and noticed the bag at her feet. "That's... Yeah it is, isn't it?" The bag wasn't too interesting. Sure it was an awkward size, and the lettering wasn't in a language any of them knew, but besides that it looked like an average old bag. Of course, it was the fact that it was there that made it interesting. "Guys, what do we do?" Kellista asked. "Can't you just send it back?" Lirren said, looking to Culleo. The medbot had made its rounds by this point, so he could finally start speaking properly. "But- but I already did! I ended the spell and sent the familiar back! Now that I've done that I'm no longer tethered, so can't summon or dismiss them anymore." They all exchanged nervous glances. That thing had ignored summoning orders, stared ALL of them down, and had tried to cast something before being dismissed, not to mention how it went from stock still to lightning fast reflexes in the blink of an eye. And now its bag was here.
"Well? Let's open it up!" Lithia reached for the bag and everyone else was too stunned to stop her. Unzipping it, she upturned the bad, dumping its contents onto the ground. "So, what do we have here? Some clothes by the looks of it." Lirren was first to speak up. "Lithia! What are you doing!?" "Uhh, checking out our sweet new swag. Obviously!" Turri answered for her. "Come on. Ooooh, what's this?" Turri, being the birdbrain that he is, was immediately distracted by the shiny piece of metal that had tumbled out of the jumble of clothes. He picked it up and started examining it closely, eyes expanding rapidly. "What are you...? Ah ha!" Pushing a knob that turned out to be a button, a solid 'Ka-chink!' made everyone flinch as a simple yet elegant blade popped out. Turri's eyes expanded even wider and a grin made it to his beak. "Oh this one's totally mine!" Culleo considered saying something, not liking how something he summoned was now being robbed. "Hey what're these?" Oh great, now Kellista was in on it too. She found a small pouch of brown spheres. Taking a sniff, she must have liked what she smelt because she popped the thing in her mouth. "Hey! This stuff tastes good! I think I found some candy!" She said, rolling the brown sphere around her mouth. Everyone turned at that, and Kellista realized the folly of showing off her prize as everyone went for a piece.
In the turmoil of grasping hands, squawking and muttering, and a couple pinched fingers, Lithia was the first in and out. She was terrifyingly nimble despite her size, and she brought up her prize to take a sniff of her own before her eyes widened. "Nobody eat these!" She suddenly howled at the group. Everyone stopped in shock as Lithia lunged towards Kellista, who was more than a little shocked when the Lyc twice her size picked her up like a toddler. "Spit it out! Spit it out now!" She said, shaking the kobold. Kellista opened her mouth and let the brown ball of goodness drop onto the dirt, ruining it. "Hey! Let her go!" Culleo drew his rapier and pointed it to the one threatening his friend. Lithia hardly even noticed the second kobold, but still did as asked. "What was that about?" Turri asked. "Those aren't candy. At least I don't think so. They're laced with caffeine!" With that grand statement the others quickly dropped theirs, Lirren caught a whiff from his own and yep! Caffeine. It was subtle, hidden under a network of sugar, but it was there. His joined the other on the ground.
Kellista had never been so glad to be shaken like that. She was about to swallow the thing! Two seconds later and she would have ingested poison, and she didn't like her chances at that point. "Th-thank you for saving me." She said, still a little shaken from being a little shaken. "Don't mention it!" Lithia replied with a grin. "But now I want to know why our guy had a bag of poisonous sweets on him. Any ideas?" The group exchanged glances, and Kellista piped up again. "I think he was an assassin!" All eyes turned on her and she almost felt the weight of their collective gaze. "Well think about it! What have we found? A disguise, poison you'd willingly eat, a concealed knife," Turri was still fiddling with it, and there were now several bits of metal sticking out at odd angles. "Which we now see comes with a lockpicking set! Honestly Turri put that down before you release a toxic cloud or something!" Kalivine, who had been nodding along interjected "and some kind of access card" while holding up another find. "Exactly!" Kellista cut back in. "And where is this all stored? In a nondescript bag that could just be left somewhere! Come on guys, you saw how it moved! It hardly made a sound and was getting ready to fight, regardless of its summoners instructions! Like it actually thought it could take us all!" Kellista was panting by the end of her little presentation. "I think she's right. It was also powerful enough to bend a summoning to its will like that. I'm just glad you were able to send it back. I don't even wanna know what it was planning." Lirren said. Turri sighed and dropped the knife, and they all came to the same conclusion. After a few quick seconds everything was back in the bag and nobody wanted to touch it anymore.
"So what do we do now?" Culleo broke the silence, "should we tell someone?" Kalivine nodded. "Definitely report this. I think Mr. Folksen is in today. He'll know what to do." With someone to pin the responsibility on a plan of action, the group headed to the main campus building.
.....
After he finished inspecting the ground and distinctly not crying in the fetal position over lost chocolates, Micheal slowly picked himself up, dusted off his clothes, and began to walk home. What sucked was that even without his bag, he was still weighed down because of the detachable weights he had wrapped around his wrists and ankles, and now that he had let himself cool down, his limbs also felt like lead. He gave a mental sigh as he trudged along. The journey was slow and painful, but at least uneventful. As his house came into view, Mikey noticed that he still felt the imprint of his bags strap on his hand and shoulder. Kinda weird, because 'the incident' as he started referring to it as happened nearly 20 minutes ago now, and the imprint he could see was still in his hand. Focusing on it, he could still feel the fibers that made up the strap! He stopped and leaned over, looking closely at his palm. There's nothing to see, but he definitely feels his bag, not the imprint, but the actual strap like it was in his hand. "Wha...?" Closing his fingers and yes, there was something. It wasn't physical though, but almost like a breeze in his hand. He gave it a gentle tug and- "wait No! Not AGAIN!" started seeing spots in his vision.
Michael materialized back in the field with his eyes shut tight. "Come on! Are you kidding!? Why!?" He didn't care that he was making a scene in the middle of a pack of monsters, that eye thing simply couldn't be the only mode of transportation between worlds. His vision cleared however, and he saw that the field was now empty, which meant no dragon to eat him, and no kobold to send him back. But wait! His bag was here! Relief flooded through Mike as he found all his stuff was still there! Even the chocolate! "Oh, there is a god!" He said, popping one in his mouth. He stopped as he saw something, a half-eaten chocolate on the ground, clearly spat out. 'So, it's not that they didn't rob me, but team dragon is just too good for my stuff?' he thought with just a little indignation. Bad mood back firmly in place, Mike took a look at his surroundings. Now that there were no distractions, like a dragon in his face ('no, I willnot let that go any time soon!'), he could see the 'field' was the unkept land kind more than the soccer field kind, and this field was surrounded on three sides by buildings that were old enough that they might be ruins, and weren't styled like anything he had seen on earth. Knowing werewolves roamed the area, it was starting to feel like a monster town. Behind him however, stood a thick stone wall with a spiked fence on top of it. Although he had no chance to climb the wall, it did nothing to hide the grand, Cathedral looking structure behind it. The structure seemed to be carved out of marble, and was clearly maintained in stark contrast to the rest of the area. Looking up, Michael took back 'cathedral' and went with 'super palace' because this place was utterly massive. Sure, the base of the building was on par with Notre Dame but at higher levels instead of tapering out like most buildings do, it became larger and infinitely more extravagant. Seeing how he had literally been summoned here, Mike was clued in on the existence of magic, but the blatant disrespect for the laws of physics above his head confirmed that wizards were probably a thing. As the main body of the building went higher and higher, it seemed to thin out and seperate into a tangle of towers, courtyards, balconies and a whole lot of castle parts he didn't have words for, all forming a beautiful balance between chaotic and symmetrical. There were bridges that went to sections that didn't have anything under them, straight up floating islands, stairs that were rows of floating steps, and landings that looked like they disagreed on what way was down, all loosely forming a cage around a main structure that he could hardly see thanks to all the clutter around it. There was nothing on earth, even in games or movies that compared to the ridiculous levels of architecture going on in front of him. Seeing such beauty and grandeur so remarkably displayed in front of him, Michael was filled with deep emotion.
That emotion was pants-wetting fear. What the heck!? Was he trespassing on a literal god's doorstep!? Or, judging by the surroundings, was this some sort of local superpower that basically owned the very air he was breathing!? No, probably not, they hadn't aimed anything at him or yelled through a microphone that he needed to vacate immediately or be forcibly removed, but still! Michael stood there for several minutes, staring with a blend of terror, curiosity and fascination. He wasn't even sure how long it had been when he saw a new monster, one he did not have a name for, casually strolling towards the castle. Upon seeing the creature, it struck him that he was standing in broad daylight in the middle of a field in downtown monsterville. Luckily whatever it was hadn't noticed him yet, and he intended to keep it that way. He ran into the most deserted looking part of the ruins, hoping to keep eyes off him.
.....
"So after he dismissed it, we noticed the bag hadn't gone back, so we took a look and it was clear the creature was a rogue of some kind." The six of them were gathered in an office several floors high in the school, and were busy relaying the events that had transpired concerning the summoning to one of the few teachers that were still available to speak with.
"How can you be sure? What was in the bag?" Professor Folksen, an older Kaikku and notable scholar asked.
"Well, the bag itself was unremarkable, but there was a concealed dagger and a caffeine based poison along with a simple disguise. And the dagger also had a set of lockpicks built into it too. When we realized what we were looking at, we decided to put everything back and come to you." Kellista continued, describing the scene quickly to the professor.
"You made the right call. With any luck your friend will pull their bag back, find their items intact and decide seeking retribution would be a waste of time."
"Sorry sir, pull their bag back?" Culleo asked.
"Indeed Mr. Zirrkus, this isn't the first time a familiar returned home without everything. The tether that allows them to find their way back to their own dimension remains until every piece returns with it. only then does the figurative door close and prevent them from coming back unprompted. Your friend has probably already taken their things back and has forgotten about this whole thing." Mr. Folksen said reassuringly.
"But wait, if there's still a tether to this world, couldn't it come back instead!?" Culleo asked with panic rising in his voice.
"No no, that won't be an issue. When a familiar is partially returned like in this case, the mana of its homeworld acts as an anchor, any attempt to pull itself back through without the summoners assistance would just pull everything to its origin. Even if it did have a way to come back, you've given it no reason to seek you out."
"But this thing managed to circumvent my summon, couldn't it find other workarounds if it could do that?" Culleo was struggling to keep his voice in the same octave.
The old scholar shook his head. "That would require a monumental misunderstanding of magic. There may be some things we've forgotten about mana since the jolt, but this comparison would be on the same level as worrying that gravity might fail because someone was able to hack your comm. It has no reason to return and even if it did, there would literally be all the mana in a world holding it back. You can relax dear Culleo, it's not going to seek out vengeance against you."
Culleo tried to calm down, he did his best to consider his mentors words and see the clearly laid out logic, but his nerves just wouldn't go down. He had a mantle of dread over his heart that just wouldn't abate. Ragged wisps of the tether seemed to remain, so faint they just might be his imagination, but something inside him was screaming that this wasn't over.
Seeing the apprehension on his pupil's face, Folksen tried another approach. "Come now, you said this duel took place on the eastern field, yes? Well let's go check it out." The old bird had clear signs of aging, wrinkles, loss of feathers and colour, but it did nothing to slow him down as he briskly made his way to a nearby window. "Now where, ahh! I can see scorchmarks. That's where you fought, yes?" He called as the young, spry and physically fit students caught up. Kalivine confirmed. "Yes, right over there. The creature was summoned by those two gouges" he said, pointing to some damage in the turf. "And what do you see?" Folksen asked. "...the bag is gone." Lirren answered. "Exactly. And what do you know? No assassins at our throats. The tether has been severed, we don't need to worry about them coming back. Now I want you kids to get home early tonight and have a good night's sleep. The school year officially starts tomorrow and you don't need to let this keep you up all night."
Culleo nodded numbly. Seeing the empty field had only made the icy grip on his heart squeeze tighter, but everything was exactly as professor Folksen had said it should be, and he couldn't find any reason to doubt it. "Alright teach, that sounds like a good idea, I'm headed out before this lot gets me into any more trouble." Turri said before giving Culleo a clap on the shoulder "Cully! You two need a ride? Don't worry about it, it's no biggie!" He didn't even wait for a response as he grabbed Kellista's hand and began leading the two kobolds out to a landing pad and a few minutes later had the two on his back as he flew through the night. Even two on his back, kobolds were sufficiently smaller than kaikkus that Turri was able to glide most of the way.
"This whole thing really is eating at you, huh?" Turri asked, and it took Culleo a moment to realize he was being addressed. It was starting to get into the evening, but people were milling about, so Turri had taken them higher than strictly necessary to give the kobolds some privacy. "...I'm not really sure why, but yeah. Everything that Professor Folksen said made sense, and this kind of thing doesn't normally bother me, but I just can't shake this feeling..." Culleo trailed off as he considered the problem. "I bet you're just stressed from not getting an answer!" Kellista interjected, "We've been working forward to getting a spot with the Divvani faction for months now and we didn't even get an answer! It's just nerves, man!" Culleo had honestly forgotten about that, but Kellista was right. They just threw everything they had in an all or nothing battle that would probably have an effect on the rest of their lives, and didn't even know if they had won. As Culleo looked forward as best he could into the headwind, he really hoped his friend was right.

Ds1 is both way harder and easier but ds2 is just plain easy. Youll argue 'stone armor' ill say 'old ironclad', youll argue 'large club' ill say 'old knights hammer', youll argue 'faster heals' ill say '99 lifegems'

Starting to shop around for some new wheel and tire combo’s. Going with bullitt wheels black centers with a polished lip or 03-04 cobra’s, would like to stay either 17x9 or 18x9 as I’m not too much of a fan on the 10.5 rears, not my thing. Car will be lowered to fill that gap either size.
What wheel size do you have? 17 or 18’s and overall thoughts on your choice?

First / Previous / Next
Ava bows dramatically, "Of course, Empress. Anything else while I'm over there? People are starting to worry about you, so I fear that they might just leave you."
I blink. Leave me? Abandon me here and go?
You're Empress now. They fear your power and what you will do. Some people there also fear you giving them orders.
But, it's not like I'd give them a bad order, or something I wouldn't do myself.
Despite what Ava - pardon us - Builder Ava says, a majority of people do not like to be ordered around.
Hmm. This is becoming more than I thought it would be very quickly. If they leave, then there goes our best ship and best way to traverse the gates. Coming in, it didn't look like the ships docked here were moving anytime soon and Ottarn's ship is proving that. We need ships.
"Ava. I have an idea. When you go back to FarReach and see if anyone else - human or K'laxi - is willing to come with you. Don't tell them we want to make them builders, but don't like, deny it either. We're going to need more help here than just the two of us." I see her face fall a little, uh oh. "But uh, you're still the first, and you're still my right hand, you'll hold a special place." That perks her up a little bit.
"We need a ship. I'm worried that FarReach might leave. See if you can get a duplicate of FarReach's printer database. She should have plans in it to make just about anything we need, up to and including a wormhole generator and Stardrive."
Ava gasps. "we're going to make our own ship? But, we don't know any AIs."
I nod. "We will have Builders though. If they can become starbases, I bet they can become starships. Plus, Venus doesn't use them, so I know it's possible."
At the mention of Venus, Ava raises her eyebrows. "You're not thinking of reaching out to Venus are you?"
I try and make a noncommittal gesture. "Well, they are the official government in the inner Sol system. And they are experts in doing things without AI help."
Ava is firm. "They're assholes Melody. They treat everyone not from Venus with no respect. They don't even think AIs are people."
Ugh, she's right. We can't reach out and contact Venus. If we did, we'd be seen by everyone else in human space as throwing our lot in with them.
Okay, we'll do it on our own. People over here have been in space for a long time, they know how to make starships.
Yes, but why are their engines so weak? Why did they never learn how to use a wormhole generator? They're ossified. They have no flexibility.
Well then, it's time for us to do some stretching exercises and see if we can get some flexibility back in place over here.
"Ava thank you, you're right. No Venus. We'll do it on our own." Ava beams at the compliment. "They must have a printer here. So we'll see if FarReach will let us duplicate their database and we'll build our own ship. We'll start small, a Frigate or something, no need to go nuts and make a Starjumper or Dreadnought right off the bat."
Ava smiles. "Wonderful. I think that's the right plan. I'll head over to FarReach, get your coffee, see if anyone else wants to join us and grab a copy of the database. Back in a few!" She reaches up and kisses me on the cheek before she leaves. My hand reaches up to touch the spot as I watch her leave. What was that?
She understands what it means to be the right hand to an Empress.
What it means to be an Empress? I look around the throne at all the empty seats in the gallery, the empty floor far below me, the wall blocking me off from the rest of the Reach. This will not do. If I am to really be Empress, I cannot rule from the rear. Where nobody sees me. I need to be... visible.
I stare at the huge, closed off opening to the Throne, and the paltry doorway I made just an hour ago. That won't do. Nobody can see me, can worship me from such a tiny door. I concentrate and think how it's supposed to look.
Grey fog boils and flows across the floor from behind me and down the stairs, flowing towards the wall. Making a change this large is tiring, but on the Throne I feel like anything is possible. More and more fog appears and climbs the wall at the far end of the room, and starting from the top, the wall starts to disappear. Working on a atomic level, the Nanites are disassembling the wall, turning some of the matter into more Nanites, and the rest becoming dust.
About halfway through the opening of the wall, I can hear a commotion outside. It's probably surprise at such a large wall being taken down without any heavy machinery. I guess it could also be people worried about the blast of fresh air and the improved environmental settings I just activated. I hope the vendors in front of the wall are able to move out of the way without being injured. I have already decided that if they lose any equipment I'll reimburse them personally. Nobody should be punished for me making sure that I am more visible.
Nobody who doesn't deserve it, at least.
I mentally roll my eyes as I can feel the Nanites nodding sagely.
As the wall comes down, I begin to see it. A crowd has formed outside the wall, and... yes I can hear the same singing I heard the first time. This must be The Smell of Soil after Rain's work.
The wall fades entirely, and I'm able to look down the Promenade of the Starbase. It really is an excellent view. I'm able to look all the way down to the administrative offices and over to the docks. As people come streaming in, they're still singing. I raise the lights in the Throne brighter and illuminate everything just to the point of being painful. They're not the only ones who can put on a show.
Rain's congregation barely fills out the entrance, let alone the lower galleries, but as they come in, more people from around the Starbase follow.
Everyone likes a show.
I decide to play it up. I've heard it enough that I know the basic beats of the song. As it reaches its crescendo, I stand and spread my wings wide.
The crowd erupts.
"People of Reach of the Might of Vzzx! After too long, your Builder, your Empress has returned! I am Empress Melody Mullen the First and I am here to help you become who you are meant to be. Who we are meant to be. No more will we cower in our starbase in our single system. We were an empire once, and will be again!"
They're chanting my name now. I have to admit, this is pretty great. I cast my gaze down and see Rain watching the speech. I wonder how I'm able to pick out individual people in the crowd so easily now?
"The Smell of Soil After Rain! Approach me!"
Bounding up the stairs, Rain is practically floating. They are rapturous. As they near me, they get down on their knees and bows, their head touching the floor.
Everyone in the crowd behind them follows.
"Rise."
He stands, practically vibrating with anticipation. There must be come kind of tech in the room. I don't need to shout, but the sound still has a nice, regal echo about it. "The Smell of Soil After Rain. You were the first. The first to recognize what I was, the first to see me for what I truly am. For that, you shall be rewarded." I reach a hand out and touch their shoulder. The crowd gasps as the white vestments turn royal blue.
"You are now Bishop for Reach of the Might of Vzzx. You will be the head of all the congregations here and you shall be responsible for making sure that I am worshipped correctly. Your first act is to call all the congregations here. We shall meet tomorrow to begin my reign properly. I will declare a celebration and will hear the pleas of my people. Let them know that should they so desire, they may petition me."
He turns and faces the crowd. I incline my head gently towards him, and in response, the crowd kneels to him. Clearly, his head is swimming. "Rise my flock!" He says to the gathered crowds. "The Empress has given us an order. Come, let us go spread the word so that tomorrow we can finally have our prayers answered."
Cheers and more singing. erupts from the crowd. In the time it took me to give my little speech and elevate Rain, the crowd doubled in size.
Rain turns back to me, and I lean in close to them and whisper. "Prove to me you're worthy of this elevation. Do not fail."
Their head jerks back, and their feathers ripple in surprise. Eyes wide, they nod, and swallow. I have taken all their joy of the elevation and turned it to fear.
Like I said, Great Empresses are feared and loved in equal measure.
I gently send him down the stairs, and before he reaches the bottom, his congregation picks him up and carries him on their shoulders out of the room. Presentation over, the crowd begins to leave.
I stand up. You wouldn't know it from looking at it but the Throne is surprisingly comfortable. Still, I was sitting quite a while. Ava hasn't returned either, so I don't really know what to do. I guess I should head back to FarReach and see what's going on.
I don't particularly want to be mobbed while I make it back to the dock, so I turn the crown and wings off. Huh, I am getting better at affecting the world around me.
I walk down the side of the stairs so it's not completely obvious, and I leave the throne room and walk towards FarReach. As I go, I hear Rain's congregation rush around, spreading the word. Some people are amused and tolerant, some tell them to leave and stop bothering them, and others are surprised and excited.
As I approach the dock, I see Ava. She's running towards me with a worried look on her face. Behind her, Omar and Um'reli are following behind looking confused and worried as well.
And she has my rifle on her back.
Ava sees me and waves "Melody! There's a problem!" I rush up to them. "What's wrong Ava? Hello Omar and Um'reli, why are you here?"
"That's just it Melody. FarReach declared Captain Q'ari unfit. She has assumed command of the mission and has stated that they're going home! She's disconnected from the umbilical and left!
What.
"What? Unfit? How come?"
Omar answers this time. "So, have you noticed how whenever anyone is around you, they are awfully chill about how you're now a God Empress who can not be disobeyed if you use your new creepy voice?"
My face said it all apparently. No, I hadn't noticed.
Omar nods. "Well, yes, that's what happens. You are giving off some kind of 'don't worry about it' field when around folks, and when you leave, it wears off. Captain Q'ari didn't... take it well. Dr Irenieum locked her in her quarters. Mei'la and Fer'resi also were pushing for us to leave."
"With me?"
Omar gives me a look. "That was not considered. Everyone figured you wouldn't leave. Ava showed up and said she's a Builder now too, and asked all of us if any of us wanted to stay with you and her to help rebuild the empire. She also grabbed your coffee stuff-" Ava holds up a bag, and smiles "-and said you asked for a copy of the printer database?"
"That's right. We're going to need our own starship. The ones that are here aren't very good, given that Mariens - Ottarn - who is trying to run in one that is practically leaving at a walking pace. I wanted a copy of the printer database so we could make our own Starships."
I look at them again. "So, if you're here then... you're in?"
Omar shrugs. "I didn't have anything going for me back home. Spouse died a few years back, we never had kids, I re-enlisted just for something to keep my mind off things. Staying out here is something new and different at least. I've never been this close to a God Empress before. Also, when Ava said you wanted a copy of the printer database I figured you'd need an operator. I bet you can't run a printer and I don't know how well anyone here would do."
I walk over and give him a hug "Oh Omar. You're welcome with us. Always." I kiss him on the lips and he jumps back. "Woah Melody! you're nice and all, but I'm not into most women like that."
I lean back in shock. "Oh no, no, I'm sorry Omar, that's the easiest way I can give people Nanites to make them a builder. I apologize! I should have asked first! I'm so embarrassed."
"It's okay Melody, but next time warn a person."
I look over at Um'reli "What about you? Why do you want to stay? I thought a bunch of K'laxi feared me because of that old religion."
She scoffs. "Not all of us Melody. I'm an atheist, always have been. Most of my familial group is. Ava explained what was going on, and how you had said you didn't want just humans to be Builders-" I glanced over at Ava and she winked "-and thought that you were right. There was no reason that we had to sit by and be a client species if we were being offered a partnership." Um'reli looked at me carefully. "It is a partnership, right?"
I nodded. "Yes, of course. I can't do it on my own, and the K'laxi have been our friends for centuries. I'm not about to say that you are our friends but now you're a client group too. I'm the Empress, but you can be a Builder as well."
Um'reli smiles. "Thanks Melody. So... kissing?"
"Just a quick peck. The Nanites say it's the fastest way to give you some. If you don't want to, we can find out if there's a different way."
"No, no, it's it's fine..." Her fur ripples a blush. "Are you sure Ava won't be jealous?" Um'reli laughs.
I laugh too, but Ava just chuckles politely. I look over and Holy shit, she is jealous. I pretend I didn't notice and bend down and give Um'reli a peck on the mouth.
"Okay, it'll take about a day for the Nanites to grow and reproduce until you have enough to be able to do stuff like me. The language processing comes fastest though, that one should be working at least a little bit in a few hours."
Ava comes forward and hands me my rifle. "I know you didn't ask for it, but... I know how much it means to you."
I can't believe she thought of me enough to bring me this. It's so thoughtful.
"Thank you Ava, it's incredibly thoughtful of you to do that." I go in for a hug, and she turns my face and gives me a kiss too. I shrug mentally and kiss her back.
After, I lean back and ask "How did you get this?"
"Oh While Omar and Um'reli were getting their things I was waiting by the airlock and realized that you still had your rifle in the locker. I touched the panel and it popped open! I grabbed it and then Omar and Um'reli appeared and we left quickly."
I was shocked. Nobody should be able to open those lockers.
Builders can. She probably just thought really hard about being able to please you.
I look at my new team. It's just the four of us, but I'm hopeful that we can do great things.
Omar looks around the dock and then back at me. "So, uh Melody, where do we sleep?"
Shit.

2023.06.01 14:56 HooliGan1420 21M - I bid thee a humble welcome into my very straightforward but amazingly long post. Feel free to explore, laugh and be charmed if you may ^^

Halloha, my name's Gianluca. Nice to meet you!- is what I would say in a formal setting.
But hence you found me in my area of comfort, welcome to my humble abode. Would you like some tea? Maybe you fancy some Earl Grey.
Anyway anyway I'm starting to babble lol, if you're wondering what I'm here for, it's for talking to you, interesting person out there wherever may you be. Meeting new people and all it brings is something I love. Making friends this way is amazing so therefore I presented myself!
If details are something you're into hearing, i can give you lots:
-I have to refuel every day almost cuz I go through an entire tank in 2 days or less. Love driving around. (Had to get new shoes and take up running to reduce expenses)
-I'm a car mechanic, also a construction worker, carpenter and if patience blesses me on that day; a painter.
-What am I saving up for? Well it's big, pretty massive in fact. So massive i could write an entire letter about it... Huh... Would it be cheeky if I said you can ask about this in your message? Would be a good idea.
-Had to start running everywhere for transport which is fun, I also do cycling, practice jumps and tricks at the bike park and do motorcycle and karting races. (Other categories and car racing are a work in progress, will upgrade soon)
-Music taste: this is the part where you look at a bunch of hyperbabble about bands that don't make a lot of sense unless you heard them, but I'll just throw a buncha names and you can see if any of the following applies: Radiohead, Megadeth, Fishmans, Marillion, The Black Keys, Queens of The Stone Age, Buckethead, Alphaville, Dire Straits, Little River Band, David Bowie, XTC, UB40, Commodores, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Cure.
-Ultramegahyper car and motorcycles fan, but in the weirdest way possible. My dream cars are actually cheap french hot hatches like the 306 and a 90's Renault Clio. The car I'd get first no matter what is a 1998 Ford Focus. If possible the RS version. And as for motorcycles I want a Kawasaki ZXR, 80's style. Also love German cars, especially old BMW's, first one I'd get is an e32 with the M70 V12 engine. Also love old Volkswagens and Audis, without a doubt would own an 80's Audi with one of their 5 cylinder engines and turbocharge it. Also very fond of japanese cars and will own a Nissan in any form possible, especially the 350z
-Played almost every Need For Speed game that ever released, started my journey with the franchise through Underground, and played every release as they launched. (yes even Undercover, I actually enjoyed it). I listen to the soundtracks of old NFS games in my free time. Also played Midnight Club, Forza, Assetto Corsa, FlatOut, Burnout, BeamNG... I COULD KEEP GOING.
-Not everything in my life is about cars though, my day is dedicated to music too, especially playing piano. I'm also a guitar and bass player. And really want to get more sound gear and instruments in the future (Cars and music gear? I'll be broke all the time)
-I'm relatively organized, but living by myself has shown me that being the only person inside the house, I leave stuff around unless somebody visits. But while living with my parents I didn't make any mess anywhere so I'm not an absolute demon.
-Yes, living by myself also requires me to cook and I'm actually an amazing cook. I include lots of seasoning and veggies into the meals, even soy to balance things out and eggs for protein. Learned lots while being independent.
-Fun facts about me to end this: The amount of clothes I have in total is so small that i can wash them all in one washing machine load, the house machine size. I also have 3 different pillows around me at all times cuz I don't like laying on a flat surface. I listen to music even while showering. And I own a dog that requires me to feed her on a daily basis even though I beg her to feed off the sun.
Anyways that's about it from me! Hope you enjoyed this lil introduction that is the size of the Twilight prologue, but way better.

2023.06.01 14:47 Tylus0 Traction VS Tread Life VS Price - Best Tire

My 392 is destroying tires. Zero burnouts! I’m getting 8-10k miles on my rear tires with daily 100 mile commute and somewhat spirited light to light. I’ve tried several brands, varying from 250-320 tread softness. Pirelli, Goodyear, General, Kumho…to name a few.
Frankly it’s expensive at $500-700 per pair, and I’m not getting much better traction vs my current 500 hardness Goodyears.
So what’s a decent tire you all use that balances wear, traction, and price? Currently running 285/40R20 on my 9.5” rims. Factory size is 275/40R20

2023.06.01 14:07 vzqzmar91 Tire size stock vs 225/40 R18

Has anyone changed the tire size in your mazda 3 4th gen to 225/40 R18? I am looking to change to Michelins Pilot Sport 5 I found on sale but is not available in the original size of 215/45 R18. Will ride be noticeable harsher or different in any way? Will chance of getting the tire puncture or bulges increase? Any advice you can provide will be appreciated

2023.06.01 12:42 Personal_Tap7777 Cutting off my best friend of 7 years

This is kinda a rant/ what would you recommend post
I’ve been friends with this girl 21f for 7 years, we met in highschool and pretty much instantly clicked. Throughout this friendship there have been multiple times where she makes comments about me or my life. I will give a bit of backstory for a few instances of this. 1) We used to be the same size and share cloths however as we’ve both gotten older obviously bodies have changed. She will now occasionally make comments about how I have an ED either to me or about me to other people. I started picking up on this after she started gaining some weight (side affect of bc so it was rather rapid). 2) My dad helps me pay for things while i’m in college. I have a job, sometimes have even had multiple jobs while going to school full time so I am not being completely dependent on my parents but they do help and I know it is a privilege that many people do not have. If I say I cannot afford something or don’t want to spend money on something she will usually say something along the lines of “well you wouldn’t be paying for it because you have daddy’s money” or something like that. 3) She absolutely hates my boyfriend, which isn’t necessarily the issue itself however she will say repeatedly how much she doesn’t like him. If he texts me while i’m with her I get asked “oh you haven’t left him yet” or “break up with him” or just insulting him. (also in highschool she broke off communicating with me because her partner at the time made her choose to either continue the relationship or be friends with me but she couldn’t have both. and she thinks that my boyfriend is going to make the same ultimatum which has never even been hinted at). And lastly if her or her current partner feel like i’m not answering them or if they want to talk to me about something they will just randomly show up at my house. Like I was woken up one day by my boyfriend because my phone had been blowing up and they were outside, it was 3 am. And then they’ve also interrupted dinner with my family by coming over uninvited and unannounced because i didn’t answer my phone fast enough for them.
There have been other things too but these are some of the main ones. I’m just tired of being spoken to like this by someone who is supposed to be a friend and I have cut almost all contact with them. I feel like i’m on call 24/7 and that she feels entitled to me at any time when that’s not healthy. Any advice or commentary would be appreciated Thank you!
