2023.06.01 09:23 sprezzatura_17 New landlord wants to occupy my unit for a year but fully intends to flip it and jack up the rent...
My current landlord sold the triplex property I live in (I occupy the basement apartment). The other two units above me are comprised of tenants who have either already left (1 unit is vacant) and the final tenant is moving out in a few months. I'll be the only one left, and the new buyers want me out so they can flip it and jack the rent up.
I have been in my unit for 8 years and thus pay very low rent due to rent control. Half of market value, in fact. I have recorded audio from a showing of the new buyers speaking with their realtor planning to evict me after my lease is up, move in and occupy the space for 12 months, renovate it and then turn it over it at market value. "Could you live in a basement for 12 months?" says the realtor. "Haha, yeah, I mean, I think so." They then go on to talk about their plans for how they would renovate it and get a new tenant, doubling the rent.
Yes I know it's creepy to record people, but they were in my space and I did it for precisely this reason. I wanted to hear what shady plans/intentions prospective buyers had and to protect myself if need be.
Is there any case for INTENT? Since it's pre-meditated (that was their plan all along, to occupy my unit for a year and then turn it over it at market value, and I have them recorded saying as much) do I have any case for being able to stay? The process is still early on, and I haven't been served an N12 or anything like that. I haven't even spoken to the new landlord yet, but I'm expecting to get the bad news soon enough and want to get a head start on this.
Thanks in advance.

2023.06.01 09:19 sim0nw Question: BMW 320e touring or BMW 318i touring?
I get the opportunity to lease a company car (I know very thankful). In terms of budget, I have the option for a BMW 320e Touring or the 318i Touring (latest model). Both upgraded with M-pro package. Preferably I would go for a 330i but that is unfortunately not possible. I know that the 318i has more boot space than the hybrid variant (very important for us with two young kids), but it remains an entry-level model, do I sacrifice a lot (in speed, comfort, etc)? What would you choose? Thanks!

2023.06.01 09:16 Wild_Bold Thoughts on living in Tattenhoe?
Recently my family is looking for houses in Tattenhoe. I have done a bit of research and it seems a great area. Crime rate seems pretty low and it’s also near Westcroft Retail Park which is convenient for daily grocery shopping. There are many green and open spaces as well. However, it seems quite far from MK train station and central, which is not very convenient for travelling and commuting to other cities.
How is Tattenhoe area in general? Any advice would be appreciated!

2023.06.01 07:32 yx-Mould Plastic Vegetable Pallet Mould: Revolutionizing Agriculture and Supply Chain Efficiency
| In the agricultural and supply chain sectors, plastic vegetable pallet mould technology is transforming the way fresh produce is handled, stored, and transported. With its customizable and durable design, this innovative moulding technology is revolutionizing the efficiency and sustainability of vegetable distribution, benefiting farmers, retailers, and consumers alike. The plastic vegetable pallet mould technology offers numerous advantages that have reshaped the agricultural industry. These moulds are crafted using high-quality materials, such as durable plastics, and precision-engineered to create pallets specifically designed for the storage and transportation of vegetables. By utilizing this technology, farmers and distributors can optimize their supply chain processes, ensuring the freshness and quality of products while reducing waste and costs associated with traditional packaging methods. One of the key benefits of plastic vegetable pallet moulds is their ability to provide a secure and efficient solution for storing and transporting vegetables. The moulds are designed to accommodate different types of vegetables, ensuring proper ventilation, and preventing damage during transit. The uniformity of the moulds allows for easy stacking and handling, maximizing storage space and reducing the risk of bruising or spoilage. With this technology, farmers can streamline their operations, increase the shelf life of their products, and minimize post-harvest losses. Customizability is a significant advantage of plastic vegetable pallet mould technology. Manufacturers can tailor the dimensions, shapes, and features of the moulds to meet the specific requirements of different vegetable varieties. This customization ensures that the pallets fit the produce precisely, preventing unnecessary movement and damage. Moreover, the moulds can incorporate additional features like dividers or compartments, allowing for the separation and categorization of different vegetables. This level of customization enables efficient handling, inventory management, and traceability throughout the supply chain. The durability of plastic vegetable pallet moulds is a crucial factor in ensuring the longevity and reusability of the pallets. The moulds are constructed using robust materials that can withstand the demanding conditions of the agricultural and supply chain environments. Unlike traditional packaging methods, such as wooden crates or cardboard boxes, these plastic pallets are resistant to moisture, pests, and decay. This durability allows for multiple uses, reducing waste, and minimizing the environmental impact associated with single-use packaging materials. The adoption of plastic vegetable pallet mould technology promotes sustainability in the agricultural industry. Plastic pallets can be easily cleaned, sanitized, and reused, eliminating the need for disposable packaging materials. This reduces the amount of waste generated and lowers the carbon footprint of vegetable distribution. Furthermore, the recyclable nature of the plastic used in the moulds ensures that at the end of their lifecycle, they can be repurposed into new products, contributing to a more circular and eco-friendly economy. https://preview.redd.it/a9eq3kvzec3b1.png?width=724&format=png&auto=webp&s=89334fd845f93aa59ed88b965669d6a0302b35b8 submitted by yx-Mould to u/yx-Mould [link] [comments] |
2023.06.01 06:35 LoneRedditor123 I met a version of me from another world. They tell of an impending cataclysm
I used to think I was pretty normal. Just another guy in his mid 30s, working my 9 to 5 and going home to my beautiful wife and kids. Life sure does have a strange way of working itself out sometimes. I had been your everyday stereotypical anime/nerd type in high school, getting picked on and harassed everyday. It turns out my crush at the time, this stunningly beautiful girl who always hung out with the cool kids, was in fact a pretty big nerd herself.
Sparing all the details of course, we ended up together, married and with two amazing kids. Been together almost 10 years now. Yeah, life sure is strange alright. At least, that's what I thought, before I started thinking it was downright crazy.
"Alright Erick, it's come to my attention you've gotten some customer complaints over the last few weeks", my boss said. Pulling me into a room shortly after arriving at work. I worked a fairly simple and easy job at a local retail store, not too far away from where I lived. My boss looked extra pissed than he normally did.
"If you keep up with this attitude of yours, we're gonna have to dock your pay, or worse", he spoke sternly. I winced and nodded in agreement, despite knowing how full of shit he was. Must have been my manager trying to earn brownie points from the dissatisfied customer who reported me. Oh well. I've always been pretty timid and non-confrontational where I worked, so I knew the claim was BS.
As my day went on, however, I got a call on my phone. Still at work as my boss was leering at me from a distance, I quickly shuffled to tap the screen and decline the call. As I read the caller ID however, I remained frozen, eyes locked to the screen. Unwilling or perhaps unable to look away. It was... me?
Quickly I stuffed my phone back in my pocket, as my manager rounded back to check on me. He really had it out for me that day, can't say why. "I'm keeping my eye on you, Erick", he spoke again briefly, as he left for his office.
"Bad day, huh?", my wife spoke up from the dinner table. Damn, I must've really blanked out the rest of that day. "Yeah...", I said, lifting up my fork, "Boss is riding my ass again, how was your day?"
"Oh, it was okay", she replied. "Kids and I took a vacation day down to the local water park", she paused to take another bite. "You look really shaken up, Erick. Are you sure you're okay?".
"Yeah, I'm fine Denise", I lied. "Just a bad headache or something". Deliberately being vague as to not worry her further. By the time dinner was done and the kids were tucked in, I was already laid back on my recliner, sipping a cold beer and watching TV.
"Another late night then?", Denise piped up from the stairs. "Yeah, sorry hon. Just want to catch the news before bed, love you", I spoke softly. "Love you too!", she playfully quipped back. Dear god I love that woman, but I couldn't shake what I saw on my phone earlier. It just had me shaken from the moment I saw it. At the time perhaps I thought my mind was playin tricks on me. I wish that was all it had been.
The following day I awoke. My wife had already been at work and the kids were picked up for school. Denise had left me a note on the counter, hoping I'd have a good day, and that there was some medicine for me if I still felt bad. Smiling as I grabbed the note and took the small pill, I headed out the door and left for work.
Sparing too many more details, it was another slow day. Thankfullywith a less annoying manager on duty as I slogged through the day. As I left my shift and prepared to head home, I saw a bright light in the sky fall down just past the horizon. Surprised by the phenomena, I called out to the people walking beside me. "Holy cow, you guys see that light flying down just now?", I exclaimed. "Must've been a meteor or something...". The people next to me looked a mixture of surprised and confused. Like they thought I was telling a story or actin crazy. I brushed it off and headed home.
"Daddy, look what I got!", my daughter spoke. We had been enjoying our family meal as always, and my sweet little Ericka piped up, showing me a drawing she made in class. My wife had hoped our firstborn would be a son, so we would name him after me. We decided to name her Ericka, as it seemed similar enough to my own name.
"Wow, that looks great sweetie!", I replied. Smiling ear to ear as she held it up for me to look at. She had drawn me a pretty purple elephant. Of course, it looked nothing like an elephant, but what else can you expect from an 8 year old girl. I gave her a big kiss and pinned the drawing up on the wall by our kitchen. I would always see it walking into the house.
The night continued on. My wife and I tucking in the kids and sharing our own moment of intimacy. I decided I'd stay up later and maybe watch a few episodes of an anime I was currently watching. This was my guilty pleasure since I had no work the following day. As it turned out, I don't think I would have ended up there anyway.
A knock came at my door. Mind you, the time was close to 1AM, so I was very nervous at first. Either a solicitor, a homeless man or someone coming to rob us. The thought of it being any one of those things sent a chill down my spine. Nevertheless, we had ourselves a peephole in the door, so before I made any brash decisions, I decided I would peep through it to see who was knocking so late.
The man I saw on the other end looked... exactly like me. In almost every single way. His brown shaggy hair, the 2 moles on his left cheek, even the whole shape of his face. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. "Uh, hello? Who are you, what do you want?", I choked out. Trying to contain my confusion.
"It's me, Erick. Or I guess, I'm you. Open up, I gotta talk to you", he replied. He spoke as calmly and professionally as any other person would to a total stranger. It sounded like the most normal thing in the world to him. "Come on man, I'm freezing my ass off out here", he spoke again.
I pressed my forehead to the door, and clenched my eyes shut. Trying to get a hold of myself. Trying to shake off whatever hallucination I was experiencing right now. This just couldn't be real. I looked back up into the peephole, and sure enough, he was still there. Looking more agitated than before.
"I don't think...", I trailed off before being interrupted. "Look man, I know this is weird for you. Hell it's weird for me too, just let me in so we can talk this out". Every fiber of my being told me not to open this door. Hell, I had a family to look after. But I couldn't shake this nagging feeling in the back of my mind. Like something about him was... trustworthy.
It took me another minute, but I opened the door. Gesturing at the man to stay quiet since my family was asleep. I allowed him inside and we both walked into the kitchen together. My apparent twin had been slightly covered in snow and shivering. "Thanks, I was worried I'd freeze to death out there", he said. "You got any-", I interrupted him. Not being the confrontational type, it took a lot for me to muster up the words.
"Alright, who the hell are you, man?", I yelled back in a quiet hush. "You look exactly like me, what are you my long-lost twin or something?". I was in no mood to play games. Inviting this stranger into my home was bad enough. Denise would kill me if she found out.
"No, no, nothing like that", he replied. "I'm you, Erick. I'm the same man who grew up watching all that nerdy anime shit, getting bullied by Patrick, getting hit on by that pretty cheerleader." He went on. "I know it's hard to believe, but I am you...", he paused for a moment. "I'm the light you saw in the sky".
"What the hell does that mean? Are you saying you're a time traveller or something?", I spoke back incredulously. "Yes... and no.", he replied. "I'm sort of like a copy... of the present you." He waved his hands around on the table, in motions that were difficult to follow. Attempting to explain this in a better way. "Think of it like there are multiple timelines, and multiple universes. I'm just another one of you", he said fervently.
This was all a lot to take in. I was naturally skeptical but I just couldn't believe he was lying to me. He knew everything about me. He even knew about the things I repressed from my childhood. That, and he looked like me. But why? All of this explained how he got here, but not why he was here.
"Okay, so if you're me from another time or whatever", I replied back. "Then what are you doing here? Why are you in my house on a Friday night at 1AM?", I asked. "To tell you the truth, I'm not sure why I keep coming back here. Maybe it's the nostalgia... or the sense of wanting all of this.", he motioned around my home. "Family. Security. Love."
"What's that supposed to mean?", I asked with even more caution than before. "Well, in my time, something really bad happened. I managed to get away in one of the many time capsules our people carried, and managed to get plopped down in your world", his voice started to shake. "They called it the reckoning. No one where I'm from knows quite how it happened, but...", he paused, tears starting to well up in his eyes. "Our entire world was split in two, and I do mean that quite literally."
Stunned and perplexed at the same time, I replied, "Your world was split in half? How? Why?"
"I don't have those answers Erick", he interrupted, now with more anger in his voice. "The world I'm from is identical to yours in every way. Only issue is, I came here from a doomed one, after watching my entire family die", he slammed his fist on the table. "To try and prevent it from happening here!"
"Here?", I replied. "It's gonna happen here too?" Sitting down at the table, I pondered everything I had just sat through up to this point. If I was hallucinating or going crazy, I had hoped this ride would've ended already. "I've already visited other worlds, Erick", he spoke again. "Many, many others just like this one. Where we're from, our method of travelling isn't permanent.", he looked down. "There's no easy way to explain it but eventually, I'll get sucked back into my world and likely die as a result".
I leaned forward in my seat. "This is a whole lot to lay on me man, but I still don't know why you're telling me all this".
"Isn't it obvious? To save our...", he paused. "Your family". Getting up from his seat, he went on to start looking at all our family photos we had hung up on the wall. Stopping to admire all of their faces. "I may not be able to stop this cataclysm, but the least I can do is warn you".
"Warn me? Hell, if something like the earth splitting in half is going to happen, then what good does a warning do me?", I spoke sarcastically. The other me looked back dishearteningly. He must've known it was pointless, or he just hadn't thought that far ahead. I had sympathy for him. He was me after all, and he had lost everything. I don't know what I'd do if this happened to me.
"I can't stay, but you should know one other thing", he spoke. "Of all the other worlds I've visited, there was one in which the reckoning did not claim the lives of our family".
"How was that?", I asked. For the first time he'd offered me a gem of respite. Something that didn't sound as bleak. "You died", he replied.
"I died? How exactly? What killed me? I need to know!", I answered back angrily. Not caring that my voice may wake up Denise. "I don't know", he replied in a monotone voice. "I can't even say whether your death is what stopped it altogether, but I do know that your death saved them initially". He walked back towards me. "Would you not die, to save the ones you love?".
All of a sudden, I felt a sharp pain enter my skull. A pain so intense that I started to scream. "You know the funny thing about you humans?", the man spoke. "You're very easy to manipulate". The man slowoly walked towards me and placed his hand on my head. The pain becoming even more intense as he did so. "Your family will survive this coming war, but you will not".
All of a sudden, the man's eyes, face and mouth are all contorted into a cacophony of teeth, hair, razor wire and a black substance with the consistency of sludge. The man slowly walks inside and assimilates me into his being. I am now Erick.
I find the accounts of this human so interesting, I feel I should document them. After all, what's another way to pass the time while this timeline is stricken from existence? You were all warned never to enter space. Never to send your satellites and communicators through the veil of nothingness. Now a war shall start, and we shall be your undoing.
This blue marble you call Earth shall be destroyed, and assimilated like all the rest. We are coming. We are inevitable.

2023.06.01 06:33 Original-Ad-6758 Quai World Tour 2024?
The white paper
published by the Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission on May 27 described web3 technology as an “inevitable trend for future Internet industry development.” It also states that Beijing aims to strengthen policy support and seek technological breakthroughs to support the industry, a complete 180-degree U turn from the past stance.
I think this should be viewed as an essential opening for the Chinese population in acquisition of digital assets through Hong Kong. It is a huge deal in my opinion, if we view it in conjunction with what happened in Hong Kong just days before.
Hong Kong has permitted retail trading of larger tokens from June1 with plans to transform the city into a hub for digital assets.
Asia’s emerging crypto hubs have sensed an opportunity stemming from the crypto crisis in the U.S. I mean clearly the opportunities based in Asia are better and conducive for the growth. The U.S. on the other hand is throwing away its lead in this space for entirely political and to an extent frivolous reasons. In my humble opinion Quai Network has to shift its focus more on Asia now and the list of conferences and events on the itinerary of Quai World Tour 2024 should reflect that.

2023.06.01 05:58 UndercoverBlues Condotel Business Model, thoughts?
Hello!
I would like to ask from people who are engaged in the condotel ownership space, from your experience after diving into it, was it worth it? What are the pros and cons? Any green and red flags that we need to look out for?
Kinda interested about it with an upcoming project from DMCI but also kinda hesitant. It feels like you just funded the property and then wait for the profit. It doesn’t feel like your own because well, it’s not really a residential home per se. Is it better to just buy a regular condo then lease it out? So just fishing for inputs from people who tried this kind of investment scheme.
Fyi, I already asked a property consultant. I got some bit of info but they said there’s still no final details and pricelist since it’s yet to be officially finalized and announced.

2023.06.01 03:45 Due-Kitchen526 Role at Corporate
I’m going through the hiring process for a role in the main corporate office. It’s a senior role in merchandise planning. The recruiter has been anmazing, will be talking to hiring manager soon. I worry about the recent retail company closings and the interest rate - discretionary spending trend. Have a decent role in a Medical Pharmaceutical (fortune 50) company here in Irving but it’s not director level. I’m looking for data points and insights and am triangulating…I know it’s Reddit and it’s the internet. Can all the folks who work at Michael’s and like it there and are optimistic about it come out of the woodwork ? Is it that bad with the private equity buyer taking over? Wouldn’t social media and the lockdowns energized this industry and thus make this a long term sustainable company…especially since it’s the biggest retailer in this space?

2023.06.01 03:24 class-g My 5 year mattress hunting journey finally comes to an end - my final mattress
Hey all so I've been hunting the best mattress for me after 5 years of buying, swapping, selling, etc. and I finally found one that's not perfect, but good enough to last me until I can find a mattress not made in the USA. I am a 100% backsleeper and do not sleep on my stomach or side.
For a preface, let me say that mattresses in the USA are one of the poorest and most marked up quality in the world. Third world countries like eastern Asia and such make the best quality mattresses and those traditional mattresses are the ones you find in your grandparents households. With that said I've tried these brands over the past 5 years sold in USA:
*Beauty Rest
*Avocado
*Casper
*Chattam & Wells
*Tempurpedic
*Ikea
*Purple
*Amazon brands
*Sleep Number
-Traditional Spring mattresses have always been my goto but unfortunately mattress stores do not sell them because they are not made or sold in the USA. Everything either is foam, latex, or memory foam because of the gimmick and fake marketing industry in mattresses.
-Memory Foam mattresses are the best choice I got so far despite me not liking them much, but only Tempurpedic. Other memory foam mattresses just were terrible quality overall.
-Latex mattresses are an alternative, but over the months they have too much feedback. They don't release pressure but push your body back and it left me feeling more sore and tired overtime.
Final conclusion - Tempurpedic LuxeAdapt Firm. Do not buy this mattress from MattressFirm or other stores for their 4k listed price. Right now wholesale mom and pop stores are selling this exact mattress brand new at wholesale price of $1000 or less. They're trying to get rid of their inventory for the nextlineup of mattresses. I even found these at OfferUp. They also sell the other variations like Luxebreeze, hybrid, etc. all at these low costs.
Why this mattress? I originally slept on the LuxeBreeze firm for a while and even after breaking it in, the mattress was too firm. It was destroying my shoulder blades and caused it my shoulders to hurt anytime I would shrug downwards. I tried the luxeadapt and while it was similar, it is slightly softer and therefore gave less pressure to my lat muscles and shoulder blades. This is the best fit I found so far but it is not perfect either. To this day, my lat muscles still feel pain and soreness. However, my lowerback is loving it as it's the perfect firmness for my weaker lower back.
Final pillow conclusion - After trying so many pillows over the years, the COOP memory foam adjustable pillow on amazon is the king. Wired wrote an article saying it was the best and I agree with their choice. It's the only pillow I found that was truly conforming to every type of angle you sleep at. Plus it is affordable.
P.S- I am selling an avocado latex mattress if anyone is interested. I believe it retails somewhere around 2k. It's queen and firm. Comes with a soft latex topper. I just need to get rid of it as my house doesn't have space. Maybe for a couple hundred bucks. Excellent condition, I don't have my warehouse anymore so it's sitting in my living room doing nothing.

2023.06.01 03:12 Cr4zyCri5 23 year old Male, looking to sign a lease for a year
I’m 23 year old Latino male, who is looking for one or more roommates to sign a lease with, preferably in the midtown, arts center, and Atlantic station areas. My budget is $1300 max and I’m looking for a August move in date or late July move in. I’m very clean in both my room and common space/kitchen. I do have a girlfriend who comes over often but she is also clean like me. I also work weekends at a hospital so I won’t really bother or take up much space on the weekends. I tend to be in the apartment on the weekdays if I’m not at my girlfriends place. I’m also into fitness and I get along with everyone. The only thing I ask of roommates is for them to be clean and organized. I don’t mind pets and I also don’t have any of my own.

2023.06.01 02:28 Individual-Teacher36 How the Cardiopulmonary Function variant in Pediatric Scoliosis patients from High-Altitude Region of the world
he International Scoliosis Research Society defines early onset scoliosis (EOS) as the various types of scoliosis that occur within 10 years of age (1). EOS leads to distortion of body appearance and reduced heart and lung function, which often limits the development of the chest and even oppresses the spinal cord, resulting in paralysis (2). A large-scale demographic study showed that an increase in altitude negatively correlated with newborn birth weight. Moreover, neonatal body weight shows obvious changes when the altitude exceeds 2500 m (3, 4). Based on relevant studies, we defined an area with an altitude above 3000 m as a high-altitude area and an area with an altitude below 500 m as a plain area (5). High-altitude environments consists of low air pressure, hypoxia, and cold weather, all of which impact the cardiopulmonary function and structure of the human body. Such high-altitude environments increase cardiac output, pulmonary ventilation, pulmonary capillary hyperplasia, and other compensatory reactions (6, 7). However, there are limited studies on the effects of high-altitude environments on cardiopulmonary function in patients with EOS. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effects of high altitude on the respiratory and circulatory systems of patients with EOS by comparing blood gas analysis results and cardiopulmonary function between the high-altitude and plain area groups. In addition, we explored how scoliosis affected patients' cardiopulmonary function by analyzing the correlations between scoliosis imaging parameters and cardiopulmonary function measures. We aimed to provide an improved preoperative evaluation and postoperative rehabilitation for EOS patients living in high-altitude areas.
Inclusion and exclusion criteria A retrospective cohort study was conducted to identify patients with EOS between June 2013 and June 2021. The inclusion criteria were: (1) EOS patients with a long-term living altitude >3000 m or living area altitude <500 m; (2) full-length anteroposterior and lateral radiographs of the spine showing scoliosis of mainly the thoracic curvature type; (3) patients with an aggravated Cobb's angle >45°; (4) no treatment with braces or growth rods before evaluation; and (5) all patients knew of the study procedures and agreed to participate. The exclusion criteria were: (1) incomplete spinal radiography data; (2) patients who could not cooperate with the completion of pulmonary function examination, blood gas analysis, and cardiac color ultrasound; and (3) patients with congenital cardio-cerebrovascular diseases, syndrome scoliosis, and previous spinal surgery. Evaluation methods Patient records and relevant data were collected retrospectively. All patients underwent full-length anteroposterior and lateral spine radiographs, blood gas analysis, lung function examination, and heart color ultrasound examination. Imaging parameters Preoperatively, whole-body and lateral spinal X-rays were performed on all patients, and both shoulders were flexed anteriorly during X-ray examination to ensure the most natural state of lumbar lordosis. The imaging parameters were as follows: (1) kyphosis angle of the thoracic (kypho), (2) upper thoracic curve (UT), and (3) main thoracic curve (MT). MT measures the Cobb angle from the head side of the T3 upper endplate to the T12 lower endplate. The UT measures the Cobb angle from the T1 upper endplate to the T3 lower endplate on the cephalic side. Kypho measures the Cobb angle from the upper endplate of the cephalic T2 vertebral body to the lower endplate of the caudal T5 vertebral body. All measurements used the Cobb method. The picture archiving and communication system was used by two independent observers. To test agreement among the observers, two orthopedic spine surgeons measured the imaging parameters twice independently, and the intraclass correlation coefficient was analyzed. Doppler echocardiography Color Doppler echocardiography indices were collected and recorded, including those of the pulmonary artery internal diameter (PAID), left ventricular end-systolic dimension (LVISD), ascendant aorta inner diameter, right ventricular basal diameter (RVBD), left atrium left-right diameter (LALRD), right atrium left-right diameter, left atrium longitudinal diameter, left atrium vertical diameter, peak late diastolic flow velocity (A peak), left ventricular early diastolic peak flow velocity (E peak), interventricular septum extent (IVSE), left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), right atrium vertical diameter, and interventricular septum thickness. A color Doppler ultrasound instrument (Vivid E95, GE Healthcare) with an m5S probe was used. Patients were positioned in the left lateral decubitus position, and their electrocardiograms were recorded synchronously to obtain apical four-, 2 three-, and two-chamber heart section images for three consecutive cardiac cycles and acquire spectral Doppler images of the mitral and aortic valves. Routine parameter measurements were performed according to the American Society of Echocardiography guidelines, and the LVEF was determined using the biplane Simpson method. The patients’ imaging results were jointly rated by two experts in ultrasound imaging. Pulmonary function examination The indices of pulmonary function examination included forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory flow in 1s (FEV1), percentage of predicted value, vital capacity (VC), and maximum ventilation (MVV). Preoperative pulmonary function examination was performed using the JAEGER Oxycon Pro with a unified baseline (CareFusion Germany 234 GmbH, Hochberg, Germany). A lung function detector (JAEGER Master Screen PFT, CareFusion Germany 234 GmbH, Hochberg, Germany) was used for measurement. A lung function detector was used for measurement, and the measurement module included pulse oscillation lung function, conventional lung capacity, velocity loop, residual gas function, dispersion function, and MVV rate. Lung function test results were obtained using JLab 5.7 software (CareFusion Germany 234 GmbH, Hochberg, Germany). Blood gas analysis Blood gas analysis indices included blood oxygen saturation (SO2%), hematocrit (Hct), partial pressure of oxygen (pO2), total hemoglobin (Hb), and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2). Two independent observers recorded these indices. To test for inter-rater agreement, the reported outcomes were recorded twice independently by two orthopedic surgeons, and the recorded data were reconciled. Statistical methods The data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 software, and the data were expressed as`x±s, where`x and s stand for the mean and standard deviation, respectively. An independent sample t-test was used to compare the measurement data between the two groups, and the χ2 test was used for counting data. Differences were considered statistically significant at P<0.05. The correlation among the parameters was determined using Spearman’s correlation coefficient and analyzed using Origin 2021 software. General data Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 38 and 66 EOS patients were enrolled in the high-altitude and plain area groups, respectively. The high-altitude group comprised 20 boys and 18 girls, with a mean age of 8.42 years (range, 6–10 years). The plain area group comprised 26 boys and 40 girls, with a mean age of 8.77 years (range, 4–11 years). The average age of the high-altitude group was not significantly different from that of the plain area group (P>0.05). The body weight and height of the high-altitude group were significantly lower than that of the plain area group; however, there was no significant difference in the body mass index between the two groups. The average Cobb’s angle was 79.65°, and the average thoracic kypho was 60.16°. There was no significant difference in the degree of other spinal deformities between the two groups. The thoracic spine curves of both the groups were mainly on the right side, and the proportion of right kyphosis in the high-altitude and plain area groups was 63.16 and 66.67%, respectively, with no significant difference (P>0.05). There were 48 cases of idiopathic scoliosis, 16 of congenital scoliosis, two of 3 neuromuscular scoliosis, and 24 cases of idiopathic scoliosis in the plain area group; there were 14 cases of congenital scoliosis in the high-altitude group. There was no significant difference in the proportion of patients diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis between both groups (P>0.05). Color Doppler echocardiography examination The PAID, LVEDD, and IVST in the high-altitude group were significantly lower than those in the plain area group (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in the other cardiac color ultrasound indices, and were within the normal range. Pulmonary function examination The results of the pulmonary function examination showed that the FVC, VC, and MVV in the high-altitude group were significantly lower than those in the plain area group (P<0.05). The average predicted FVC% values in the high-altitude and plain area groups were 77.81 and 73.77%, respectively, and the average predicted FEV1% values were 78.65 and 73.05%, respectively (P>0.05), showing mild restrictive and obstructive ventilatory dysfunction. Blood gas analysis The Hct levels of the plain area group (38.49±2.89%) were significantly lower than those of the high-altitude group (40.85±4.47%; P<0.05). Hb levels in the high-altitude group (13.67 ± 1.46 g/L) were significantly higher than those in the plain group (12.85±0.94 g/L; P<0.05). The pCO2 levels of the high-altitude group (33.44±4.7 mmHg) were significantly lower than those of the plain area group (35.92±4.66 mmHg; P<0.05); however, there was no significant between-group difference in pO2 and SO2% levels (P>0.05). Correlations of parameters The correlation analysis between the spinal parameters and cardiopulmonary function measures in the high-altitude group is significant. In the high-altitude group, there was a significant correlation between the angle of the main thoracic curvature, the angle of the upper thoracic curvature, and kyphosis (rho=0.692, rho=0.484). There was a significant correlation between the kypho and upper chest curvature angles (rho=0.519). There was a significant correlation between LVISD, IVSE, RVBD, LALRD, and the MT (rho=-0.399, rho=0.565, rho=-0.358, rho=-0.371); however, there was no significant correlation between the angle of kyphosis and echocardiography index. PO2 and SO2% levels correlated with the angle of the MT (rho=-0.400, rho=-0.406). The upper chest bend angle was significantly correlated with VC, MVV, FVC, and FEV1 (rho=-0.498, rho=-0.451, rho=-0.513, rho=-0.588), while the upper chest bend angle and kyphosis bend were not significantly correlated with the pulmonary function index. There was a significant linear correlation between the UT and FEV1, FVC, and MVV in the high-altitude group. FEV1=1.623-0.011*UT, FVC=1.858-0.012*UT, MVV=54.646-0.286*UT. The results of the correlation analysis between imaging indices and cardiopulmonary function indices indicated that in the high-altitude group, UT showed a clear negative correlation with VC, FEV1, FVC, and MVV. In contrast, UT showed a clear positive correlation with these indices in the plain area group. In the high-altitude group, MT showed no obvious correlation with lung function indexes, whereas in the plain area group, MT showed a negative correlation with lung function indices. Scoliosis is a complex three-dimensional deformity that leads to distortion of body 4 appearance and reduced organ function, often causing irreversible damage to cardiopulmonary function (8, 9). Scoliosis due to rotation and thoracic scoliosis leads to a decrease in thoracic volume and asymmetry between the left and right thorax, which seriously affects the normal development of cardiopulmonary function in patients. The thoracic volume is vital for the development of cardiopulmonary function in children. Studies have shown that the critical period of alveolar and thoracic development in children occurs before the age of 10 years. Alveolar development in children approximately 10 years old is as prevalent as in adults, and the thoracic volume can reach half of that in adults (10, 11). Therefore, alveolar and thoracic development in EOS patients is critical since scoliosis and thoracic deformities can lead to pulmonary dysplasia. Most researchers believe that poor cardiopulmonary function in patients with scoliosis is caused by mechanical compression of bone tissue (12). Tsiligiannis et al. (13) showed that scoliosis changes the position of thoracic organs and affects normal respiratory movement, resulting in restrictive ventilation disorders. Campbell et al. (2) indicated that congenital scoliosis in patients with rib deformities could cause thoracic deformities, affects the normal development of heart and lung function and often leads to thoracic insufficiency syndrome. However, other studies have suggested that lung function is mainly affected by the limited development of the heart and lung caused by scoliosis rather than the mechanical compression caused by simple thoracic deformities (14). Davies et al. and Berend et al. (12, 15, 16) performed autopsy studies on EOS patients. They showed no obvious abnormality in the shape of alveoli, a decreased total number of alveoli, and no decrease in the size of alveoli due to thoracic compression and no decrease in the size of alveoli due to thoracic compression (the size was found to be compensated). Koumbourlis (17) et al. studied the relationship between scoliosis and patients’ circulatory and respiratory functions. They discovered that scoliosis-related deformities prevent patients from exercising like their normal peers, which reduces the number of chest breaths and compensates for the number of abdominal breaths. Regarding the thoracic structure, scoliosis limits the normal development of the chest, causing deformation of the important cardiovascular compression, leading to cardiopulmonary dysfunction. High-altitude areas exhibit a unique geographical environment comprising factors such as low pressure, low PO2, and low air content. Living in low-oxygen and thin-air environments over a long period impacts the development of cardiopulmonary function. An independent risk factor for low birth weight in newborns is the high-altitude environment, which leads to fetal growth restriction and affects the function of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems (5, 18). When the altitude increases by 100 m, the ambient atmospheric pressure decreases by 5 mmHg. Because the oxygen concentration in the atmosphere is constant, the oxygen partial pressure will decrease by approximately 1 mmHg. At sea level, the average pO2 is 150 mmHg. When the altitude is between 3000 and 5500 m, the PO2 decreases between 80 and 100 mmHg. When exposed to hypoxia and a hypobaric environment, people living in a plateau environment will have compensatory regulatory responses to restore the body's internal homeostasis. Over the course of natural selection, this compensatory response may be passed on to offspring through genetic material. The compensatory responses of people at high altitudes to hypoxia and hypobaric environments include increased pulmonary blood perfusion, erythrocytosis, blood viscosity, lung tissue compliance, and a slight increase in 5 pulmonary artery pressure. Studies have shown that people in high-altitude environments have symptoms of right ventricular hypertrophy and pulmonary hypertension, and elevated Hb levels in the body (19-21). In this study, the chest curve was the main bend in EOS patients in plain and high-altitude areas, with Cobb's angle of the main bend >45° in all patients. There was no significant between-group difference in the direction and severity of scoliosis and kyphosis. Idiopathic scoliosis is the primary classification of scoliosis. Excluding congenital cardiac developmental abnormalities, pulmonary artery diameter, LVEDD, and inter-ventricular septum thickness in the high-altitude group were smaller than that in the plain area group. This may be due to structural abnormalities of the heart and lungs caused by long-term low pressure and lack of oxygen in high-altitude areas. To explore the relationship between scoliosis, cardiopulmonary function, and the effect of high altitude on cardiopulmonary function, a correlation analysis was performed. The UT angle in the high-altitude group was correlated with the pulmonary function examination indexes (VC, MVV, FVC, and FEV1), while the UT angle in the plain area group was not significantly correlated with these indexes. Long-term exposure to high and cold climates, low pressure, and low oxygen environments impact the cardiopulmonary structure of patients in high-altitude areas. Therefore, the reduction in thoracic space caused by changes in spinal structure will cause more serious damage to the cardiopulmonary function of patients in high-altitude areas compared to patients in plain areas (22). Therefore, patients with severe scoliosis in high-altitude areas require active surgical intervention to reduce cardiorespiratory impairment associated with scoliosis. The results of pulmonary function tests showed that the average values of FEV1% and FVC% in both groups were < 80%, and there were mild restrictive and obstructive ventilation disorders, indicating that scoliosis and thoracic deformities limited the normal respiratory function of patients. The FVC, VC, and MVV indices of the high-altitude group were significantly lower than those of the plain area group. This could be due to the following: the low temperature at high altitudes contracts the small airways of the lungs and increases ventilatory resistance; the hypobaric and hypoxic environment forces the patients to breathe more times per unit time, increasing the load of respiratory muscles and causing respiratory muscle fatigue; the nutritional status of patients in high-altitude areas is worse than that of patients in plain areas; and the thoracic volume is smaller in patients in high-altitude areas than that of patients in plain areas. Scoliosis with thoracic deformity is often accompanied by limited diaphragm function and decreased chest volume, which leads to a decrease in lung tissue pressure and compliance, pulmonary hypertension, and even serious diseases such as cor pulmonale and respiratory failure (23). Studies have shown that pulmonary dysfunction before surgical treatment increases perioperative respiratory complications such as respiratory insufficiency, atelectasis, and pneumonia (24). Therefore, during clinical treatment, more attention should be paid to evaluating pulmonary function in EOS patients before surgery. For patients at high altitudes or other EOS patients with significantly impaired pulmonary function, it is necessary to carry out preoperative respiratory function training to improve respiratory function (25) and surgical safety and reduce postoperative complications; the comprehensive evaluation of pulmonary function in combination with other disciplines is also possible. 6 Because of the lack of studies comparing lung function between EOS patients in high-altitude and plain areas that are similar to our patient population, it cannot be ruled out whether the decline in lung function indices is affected by spinal deformities. In this study, the number of patients in high-altitude areas was less than that of patients in plain areas. Our results may not be comprehensive enough as there were only a few categories of imaging parameters; therefore, it was difficult to analyze the correlation between other imaging parameters and cardiopulmonary function. Conclusion EOS patients in high-altitude areas had poorer cardiac and pulmonary functions than those who live in plain areas. Cardiopulmonary function and the degree of scoliosis interact with each other. We should pay more attention to preoperative evaluation and postoperative rehabilitation for EOS patients living in high-altitude areas. References: 1.Fletcher ND, Bruce RW.
