2023.06.01 11:58 maximusaemilius The first intergalactic Olympics. Or the story how all human athletes suddenly were international superstars.
"Welcome one and welcome all to the 528th quadrennial summer Olympics! This has to be the most exciting day we have seen in the history of competitive sports." "That's exactly right because this is only the second time in human history that the Olympics will be held off earth, and the first time that they are being held interstellar." "Four years ago, some summer Olympics were held on Mars, but with the restriction to gravity, and some issues regarding respiration. However, after an agreement with the Galactic Assembly. The Rundi delegation has graciously offered to host the 4020 summer Olympics." "And hosted they have. This stadium was built in under four years with consultations from human architects and with the original classic style of greek and roman architecture in mind. The Rundi really do know how to make a beautiful building when they want." "This is honestly what the universe really needed after these last hard few years, with the Burg war, and the Gromm outbreak, and the Tesraki earthquake, a lot of people were just ready and waiting for some good news. Not to mention that after all of the issues with the LFIL and poor PR for humans across the galaxy, we all really needed a break." "And what better PR than to share one of the greatest cultural achievements of human history? Historically the Olympics have been a time where countries set aside their differences and come together to show off their best athletes in competitions of human skill, fortitude, and perseverance. Now, for those non-human watchers, the Olympics were originally established in Ancient Greece. The word Olympics derives from the word Olympus which was the historical home of the Greek gods. Anyone who competes in the games is called an Olympian giving the implication that their feats of strength and power are almost godlike." "Not to mention they originally required the participants to compete in the nude." "Ha! Yes, let us not forget that. Luckily, or unluckily for us, things have been a bit more modernized since then, and men and women from around the universe will begin their competitions today. Today will be the first Olympics in history with representatives from interstellar colonies all across the Milky Way galaxy." "Beginning in the next four years, Olympic officials hope to open the games up to non-human species for competition." "Yes, officials say that it would be an opportunity for humanity to reach out a hand of peace and offer this great tradition of peace to the rest of the galaxy in hopes of fostering cooperation and understanding between all who live in the universe." "That will be a great day indeed, and look here comes the Olympic torch, carried by none other than commander Adam Vir of the UNSC, Earth's golden boy." "The Olympic torch had an intense journey this year, lit in Olympic greece and carried all across Earth, to where it was secured to be transported on the UNSC harbinger. Now it took some work as UNSC regulations do not allow open flames aboard an interstellar transport, but with some work from some fine engineers and a bit of finagling, the torch was secured lit but burning low in a specialized sealed, and climate controlled compartment during the duration of the flight. Oh, and here he goes, handing of the torch. This will be the first time in human history that a non-human has carried the torch and lit the cauldron. They debated long and hard about who would light it this year, and as a symbol of good will towards the rest of the galaxy, and to usher in a new age of the Olympic Games, the torch has been passed to the chairwoman of the Galactic Assembly." "You know it really warms my heart to see us humans sharing such a rich part of our culture and history with the rest of the galaxy. It really is a symbol of everything we stand for at our core." "And there she goes. IT'S LIT IT'S LIT!" "A truly amazing day for humanity, the world, the galaxy and the universe!" And truly amazing it was!
The galaxy had never seen anything like it.
Humans from all around the galaxy had come together and were determined to astound the watching crowds with feats of acrobatics and athletics, so intense, it would be unbelievable to anyone who watched, human and nonhuman alike.
In those days ahead, the galaxy watched with its jaw wide, as one man broke the world, now universe record, for fastest human sprint at 29 miles per hour (47 km/h). Facts and figures put up on screens above the heads of the crowd gave info’s about the human body, to put into perspective just how powerful these athletes were, as olympic sprinters put their muscles under pressure equivalent to 1,000 pounds (453kg) of force in a single sprinting step.
They watched in awe and confusion as a tiny Olympic gymnast, no older than sixteen, cleared more than twice her body height in a double air rotation, defying the laws of physics and gravity as she hung suspended in the air, for what seemed like an impossible amount of time.
Eyes were wide and jaws had to be picked up off the floor, as a young human from earth cleared the pole-vaulting record, launching himself into the sky at 20 feet 3.⅕ inches (6,2m).
Feats of balance and strength, never before seen in the galaxy, were demonstrated as those same young adults demonstrated flips, cartwheels and feats of acrobatics on beams barely wider than the width of their feet. Gasps rose from the assembled alien crowd as a dismount brought one young woman off the beam at least three full rotations before landing.
There was no way that she could have known where she was going to hit.
But the announcers had been right, these humans had an almost godlike control of their bodies and some strange ability to know where they were in space at the optimal moment rotating on a single bar, or between two, flipping themselves around and around in ways that would have made others feel dizzy, only to land smiling a moment later their hands raised into the air in triumph.
And then came the marathon, the event that aliens had heard about, but never thought possible, preformed for the first time on a fiery death planet by a one legged, one eyed space captain in his boxer shorts in a little over four hours. The feat itself seemed unbelievable as a story, but when a young woman from a distant space colony preformed the marathon in a record breaking 2:22:53. Less than two and a half hours required her to be running at speeds of almost ten miles per hour (16km/h) for two full hours.
The stadium could not believe their ears when they had heard what she had done. Alien race officials watched her run through cameras, to make sure that the feat was really true.
But it was true, it was all true.
They could not believe their eyes.
Even in the water, humans could not be matched, pushing bodies that were not meant for swimming to speeds that could compete with one or two species running.
They put their bodies under strain so powerful it should have torn muscle and snapped bone, but when they came up smiling and grinning and waving to the crowd, all the stadium could do was to contain their excitement.
And when that wasn't enough, humans started adding obstacles to their events.
What was better than a hundred-meter sprint?
A hundred-meter sprint with obstacles you had to jump over!
At an average of 12.5 seconds, participants were reaching speeds of almost seventeen miles per hour (27km/h), as fast as car speeds within city limits.
If any of the humans had crashed, they would surely hurt themselves horribly in the process.
And the crowd absolutely loved it.
Nothing was better than watching the humans lift heavy objects, throw pointy sticks, or even leap to great vertical heights, sometimes throwing their legs higher than their own heads, which seemed impossible for aliens who had spent most of their time with average humans, if they had spent time with humans at all.
Regular humans couldn't do that!
So, what insane kind of humans were these!?
How did a human knew to release the weighted metal disk when they were spinning around so fast, and what made them decide to throw the weight of their entire body into a kinetic linkage of angular momentum that would send the metal disk nearly two hundred feet in the opposing direction?
It was the most viewed Olympics in the history of the event. Aliens watched to see the humans perform, and the humans watched to see the alien's reaction to the other humans preforming.
The Rundi home world grossed trillions of dollars, which expanded the universe's economy to soaring heights.
Tesraki capitalized on the idea, holding even more events for humans to compete in, even after the Olympics were over. From then on, alien planets would beg humans to come hold their games and competitions on their planet, didn't matter what it was… Soccer, football, baseball, you could be sure the rest of the galaxy was interested in seeing it.
The entire universe was giddy with the feats of strength and ability which had been demonstrated in those intervening days.
Humans, who only fell prey to praise once every four years, suddenly found themselves famous on distant moons, completely by accident. They all had alien companies begging them to endorse products they had never even heard of.
It was such a violent economic upturn, no one knew how to handle it.
There were those, of course, who realized something very different about humanity on those days…
They had met your average human, the lazy kind that likes to sit in comfy nests, watch TV and imbibe on excessive amounts of glucose. They had even met the average human who threw in some daily workout routine, so at least they could control their love handles.
Your average human scared them with what they could do, without even thinking.
But what did this mean?
It meant that it was very important to allow humans to nerf themselves, because if anyone ever convinced humanity as a hole what they could be if ninety percent of the population were at peak human performance...
Well…
It was simply better to keep the humans well-fed and sleepy.
Maybe then the universe would stand a chance…

2023.06.01 11:57 ckryptonite Steven Levy Says Everyone Wants To Regulate AI But No One Can Agree How. Steven, The Answer Is Simple And Proven.
In a 26th May Wired newsletter titled “Everyone Wants to Regulate AI. No One Can Agree How” Steven Levy explores efforts to regulate AI development. A Forbes headline four days later sums it up: “AI Could Cause Human ‘Extinction,’ Tech Leaders Warn.”
In what must be a first among appeals to the US Congress about regulation, the CEO of one of the major AI industry players, Open AI’s Sam Altman, urged the US Congress to regulate his business lest his own product becomes a devouring monster.
Remarkable as that is, even more remarkable is the assumption that regulation from a nation that represents less than five percent of the world’s population somehow applies to AI developers in every nation. Seriously, their assumption is that somehow the fine engineers coming out of India’s IIT are going to obey rules that are promulgated in Washington DC.
Some, like American commentator Kara Swisher, recognize the fallacy that is somehow not obvious to Altman and others. A source of governance with global jurisdiction is called for.
The City of Osmio is an online municipality whose original charter was written on March 7, 2005, at the Geneva headquarters of the International Telecommunication Union, a United Nations agency. Osmio’s jurisdiction is global. Its purpose is to provide a certification authority to the digital world. Osmio is the entity that signs your digital identity certificate that’s bound to that digital signing PEN (also called your “Privacy PEN”. PEN stands for Personal Endorsement Number. You PKI jocks will recognize that as a type of private key.)
It turns out that the solution to that problem is exactly the same as the solution to the problem of lack of accountability in artificial intelligence.
Shortly, we’ll show you that a very old method can ensure that AI remains under the control of human beings. But even before that, we need to show you a very reliable old technology that needs to see the light of day because it’s never been needed more than now. It’s so well-proven and so incredibly useful that it’s truly astounding that so few people know about it.
That technology is the TDS or True Digital Signature. (True digital signatures are not the same thing as “electronic signatures.”)
If I digitally sign any file – a contract or image or video or program code – any digital file – and send the signed file to you, you can know for certain that I signed it and that not a single bit has been changed since I signed it. The fundamental technology behind true digital signatures was created back in the seventies by the same British cryptography team where decades earlier Alan Turing had shortened World War II by cracking the German Enigma secret communication codes.
All well and good, you say, but how do I know the signer is really who they claim to be?
The solution to that one is a youngster, first published a mere six years ago when the US National Institute of Standards and Technology – NIST – created its 800-63 measure of the reliability of an identity claim. Subsequent developments such as Osmio IDQA add some technology to that methodology, binding your identity reliability score to the public number that goes with your digital PEN that signs the file. So now you not only know that the file was signed by the human being who owns this digital PEN and that nothing has been altered since they signed it; you also know how much you can trust that they are really who they say they are.
To put true digital signatures to work solving the problem of AI accountability we’ll also need a method that’s even older than true digital signatures. This old method does what a lot of government regulation attempts to accomplish.
Demands for regulations get so much attention because regulations are so difficult to get right. The endless debate about amounts and types of regulation keeps the subject in the news.
Meanwhile, professional licensing accomplishes much of what regulation attempts to accomplish – and does it so quietly and effectively that it seldom makes it into the news.
Two things go into professional licensing. The first is an attestation of competence, established through testing and other methods.
But the more important part of professional licensing is acceptance of liability. For instance, before a new building can be occupied, the professionally licensed architect, contractor, structural engineer, and building inspector must put their livelihoods and reputations on the line by authorizing the issuance of an occupancy permit.
It’s not some committee of bureaucrats that examines those ibeams, it’s the individual human being who gets paid well for accepting the consequences if they mess up. Those consequences include searching for another job, one that doesn’t pay nearly as well. Did I mention that professional licensees get paid well for accepting liability?
What if any AI program that’s capable of presenting itself as a human being had to be digitally signed by a professionally licensed human AI handler? Any user of that AI program would know who is legally responsible for what it does.
This combination of the old technologies of true digital signatures and identity reliability metrics bound to credentials, along with the even older methodology of professional licensing, can solve not only the problem of control of AI but many other problems borne of technology as well.

2023.06.01 11:57 SoraNC Daycare Delima
Hi, my oldest kid (2m) is not yet diagnosed, he has an evaluation in August but all his therapists believe he will receive it without question. My issue is with daycare, I'll post full details below. Basically I need advice on whether to: 1 - stick with current daycare until a spot at my second son's daycare opens up 2 - try to find another daycare entirely until he's in a school program 3 - find another daycare only until a spot at my second son's daycare opens up.
My 2nd son (10 mo) thrives at his daycare so I don't really want to move him and it's nearby my husband's work. They were supposed to have a spot for my oldest in January once they opened their second location, that got pushed back to March, then to June, and now TBD. First due to construction, now I think due to staffing, no update on a new ETA.
The current daycare for my 2 year old has us driving an extra 210 miles a week minimum, it's out of the way from home and work (only 1 car) and his special instructor can't make it out that far so twice a week I have to drop off hubby + youngest, go back home for special instruction, drop him off to daycare, then go to work myself for a few hours. All of his other therapists (OT, speech, PT) can make it to current daycare and will be able to make it to my 2nd son's location, including special instructor.
Daycares by home are too far for OT/PT/speech. Daycares by my work are even further out of range for everyone. Daycares by hubby's work have been full forever with a few spots springing up here and there will little turn around time (1-2 days) before being filled - I haven't done my rounds in a while to know if they'll even have anything open and it'll be 50/50 on whether or not special instructor can make it to that location.
My son has been doing so well with his therapists that I don't want to ruin it but every day is such a long day. We also have no end in sight, it's been 9 months of waiting with the ETA continually being pushed out. I keep thinking "just make it to ___" and it'll get better, but we get to that goal and then it moves.
Both my hubby and I are running on fumes. He works full time, I work 35 hours a week - most of it during the day but with all the driving I have to do I'm usually working at night too, especially with handling all appointments. I can't really reduce my hours nor would it be beneficial to do so (I'm given pto as if I were full time, position I'm in was supposed to be full time only but my manager and I worked really hard to get me it anyway, and this manager is the only 1 that let's me be this flexible with my hours). We're usually up at 5:00 am (ideally at least 6 am), out the door by 7 am, lucky to be home by 5:15 pm. By the time kids are in bed (between 6:30 & 8:00) we're lucky enough to have the energy to make dinner and little else.
Switching his daycare would really help our time management and mental but I think it would be at his detriment, especially with how hard the transition would be for him. His current daycare has the lead infant teacher keeping an extra eye on him, since the teachers in his room keep changing. The 1st daycare he attended at 7 mo was so awful he had to be pulled within a month despite waiting 7 months for the spot. 9 months later we got him a part time spot elsewhere and he hated it with a passion and it felt like none of the teachers cared about him. We were lucky his current daycare opened up brand new so he was only at the second daycare for a month (previous owner was closing but it got bought up and re-opened).
I know kids can be resilient but I'm not sure if this is something we should just tough out, especially since he might qualify for a school program in January, he will highly likely qualify for a school program next August once he's 3.

2023.06.01 11:56 donlampa DS260 Permanent address
Hi guys,
I have been selected for further processing in DV2024. I gathered all de documents I need to fill out the the DS260 form correctly however I do have some questions I would like to ask here. Before I start I have to add as the context that I have never been in the US before.
- How much time can I wait with the filling of the ds260? I know this more or less depends on the case number, mine is around EU25xxx. Can I wait a couple of months with filling or should I rush with it?
- I plan on switching jobs in the upcoming months and very likely moving countries because of that. If I lock in the DS260 form, how can I -if I have to- make sure that the form is up to date? To my understanding if the DS260 is processed and I have the visa interview date, I can no longer touch the form. Can I get penalized because of something like this? What if I move countries and switch jobs but forget to update the form?
- The DS260 form requires me to specify two things I can not. One, the place where I intend to live after arriving into the states. I just don't know, depends on where can I get a job easily probably. Two, the mailing address inside the united states where they will send the green card once it is ready. This, I am also really lost with. I do not have anyone, literally noone that is in the US. I can't give this address to the form because I do not have any, and this seems to be a mandatory field as well, so I have to specify something here? I read at a couple of places that I can open something like a PO box that they would send my GC to but that feels very unsafe.(+ in the case of USPS I think I can only request PO boxes if I am already in the US.) Do I have the ability to somehow update the addresses after I know for sure I would be getting permanent residency?
+1. Also there is one thing I do not know and I am very afraid of. When registering for the lottery Passport number was not asked for in the form. In addition to that I did not even had a passport back then. My first ever passport arrived in early May this year, right after the results were out. This is not a problem right? I know that in earlier year you had to have a passport number to register to the lottery and you had to be very careful to give the exact passport number upon the registrations.
I have many other questions but these are the most concerning ones. Thanks for info in advance!

2023.06.01 11:56 _Neo_64 The Economic death spiral
Im relatively new to vicy 3 at 70 hours. Ive played 1 full game as the US and am currently running a Prussia play through. I noticed in my previous incompleted games as well as my US one and now this one, that it is almost impossible to escape from a large deficit in goods. Ive formed Germany and annexed a chunk of Austria. Despite having way more tool workshops, all of which have full employment, my stockpile continues to plummet. Tools here are just an example as this happens with every resource. Then i must expend other resources in an attempt to escape this deficit which only causes another one. And then once I finally start making improvements, one of the other great powers or a neighbor just immediately somehow starts a MASSIVE import route from me. I was in a situation with a -913 wood. I got it to -857 and France decides to randomly start a trade route importing 300 wood from me. Like wot? Is there something im missing here? Even setting tarrifs to protection doesn’t stop them as ive seen the AI maintain trade routes that hemorrhage money seemingly just to piss me off. This in turn, slams my SoL into the ground as everything skyrockets in price to compensate for low supply. But any time I try to fix said supply, I get fucked.
Coming from someone studying economics wth is this?
And I cant isolate myself either because im not self sufficient in certain resources. I also cant start my owm trade route with nations because lol apparently everyone else is broke or doesnt trade in that good.
So is there some sort of major gameplay mechanic im missing here?

2023.06.01 11:56 Anvis_Infinity [In progress] [1,496][Sci-FI] The Verses (title) Please tell me you thoughts
California state prison
Life is truly unpredictable. We all once dreamed of becoming doctors or lawyers, shaping our futures with optimism. But here I am, confined within these prison walls—a reality I never fathomed. Yet, in this desolate place, it seems that no one truly cares. Two months have passed since I arrived, and each day is an arduous struggle for survival, a constant battle against the law of the jungle in its most modern form. Every passing day feels like a never-ending nightmare, gradually consuming my sanity. I can feel myself descending into madness, constantly on edge, my fight-or-flight instinct perpetually activated. There is no respite, not even in the darkness of night. The air is thick with the echoes of tormented screams that haunt our sleep, ensuring that even our dreams are tainted with despair. It’s bewildering how this place not only confines the body but also imprisons the mind. Amidst this bleak existence, I find solace in the intimidating visage I possess and the imposing physique I bear. It sets me apart from those who have succumbed to the depths of this grim abyss, their bodies now six feet under the ground. However, my physique alone could only provide limited protection. It is my own foolish mistakes that may ultimately lead to my demise, or rather, will lead to my death. I have already committed my first error by offending a notorious gang leader. I wish it were a grave offense like taking the life of one of his subordinates, but instead, it was something as trivial as sitting at the wrong table in the canteen. And now, he seeks to end my life. My cellmate warned me of the bounty placed on my head, a sick game concocted by that bastard to torment me. As the cell door buzzed open, its mechanical groan reverberated through the air, signaling the dreaded lunchtime. A chill slithered down my spine, mingling with the sickening anticipation of what awaited me beyond those iron bars. I knew all too well that this time, caution was not merely a choice but a matter of life and death. Every step I took outside, I was acutely aware of the lurking shadows, the hidden dangers ready to strike. The guard’s barked command sliced through the air like a serrated blade, slicing away any semblance of safety or comfort. His voice dripped with sadistic pleasure as he herded us, defenseless prisoners, towards the canteen, a place where pain and violence lurked like ravenous beasts. My heart hammered in my chest, a rapid percussion of fear, as I analyzed my surroundings with feral instinct. I scoured every corner for hidden threats, my eyes darting from one shadow to another, assessing blind spots like a hunted animal on the verge of its last stand. In that moment, an opportunity, as precarious as a spider’s silk, presented itself. The guard, his malevolence etched deep into his sneering face, loomed close to me. I weighed my options, knowing that the wrong move would condemn me to a merciless demise. The specter of death whispered in my ear, urging me to fight back, to strike first and defy the shackles of my oppressors. Without a flicker of hesitation, my hand shot out, the palm of my trembling hand connecting with the guard’s face in a resounding slap that echoed through the corridor. His expression twisted into a grotesque mask of rage, a harbinger of the storm that was about to be unleashed upon me. “You fucker! Come here!” his voice boomed, a thunderous growl that reverberated in the depths of my soul. He charged towards me, wielding his formidable bat with a sadistic gleam in his eyes, as if relishing the opportunity to unleash his cruelty upon my defenseless body. Driven by desperation, I fought back, fueled by the primal instinct to survive at any cost. Blow after blow, I struck with a ferocity borne from a place deep within me, each slap a desperate plea for freedom. But my resistance was futile, a fleeting flicker of defiance in the face of an unyielding storm. The guard’s retaliatory onslaught descended upon me like a torrential downpour of unrelenting agony. His weapon became an extension of his twisted will, delivering bone-shattering blows that fractured my body and shattered my spirit. The searing pain tore through every fiber of my being, eclipsing any physical torment I had endured before. It surpassed the brutality inflicted by my own father, a testament to the depths of human cruelty. Mocking laughter mingled with the sound of my screams, the guard’s sadistic delight intensifying with every strike. I writhed in excruciating pain, my body a mere vessel of suffering, on the precipice of vomiting up the wretched food that had been forced upon me. Each kick landed with merciless precision, a merciless reminder of my insignificance, reducing me to a broken, battered shell of a human being. Finally, my ravaged form was dragged away, cast into the suffocating darkness of solitary confinement. The door closed behind me, sealing my fate within these desolate walls. As the agonizing throbs of pain merged with the suffocating isolation, a twisted symphony of despair played on, etching its haunting melody into the deepest recesses of my mind. Finally, I had survived, but at what cost? A bitter reflection consumed me as I surveyed my new home. “Hey, kid,” a weathered voice suddenly pierced the suffocating silence. The timbre of his voice revealed a man well into his sixties or beyond. Straining to locate the source, I realized it originated from the cell adjacent to mine. Surprised and puzzled, I questioned how I could hear him. Shouldn’t I be in complete isolation? “Kid, I know you can hear me,” he confidently declared, as if he held a secret knowledge. Uncertainty gripped me, leaving me unsure of how to respond or what actions to take in this confined world. To hell with it, I thought. I was already in isolation, so why not engage in conversation? I needed someone to talk to, to maintain a sliver of sanity amidst the suffocating solitude. Even though I believed I wouldn’t lose my grip on reality, I knew that prolonged isolation could weaken even the strongest of minds. So, with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension, I mustered the courage to respond, “Yeah, I can hear you, old man. What do you want?” Yet, a nagging question lingered in the back of my mind. How was it even possible for the old man to communicate with me in this isolated prison? “Nothing. I don’t need anything. I just want to talk. Is that a problem?” the old man’s voice carried a hint of loneliness, longing for connection. “No, not at all,” I replied, my curiosity piqued by his request. “Well then, what’s your name, kid?” he inquired, his tone friendly. “I’m Anvis. And you?” I responded, eager to continue the conversation. “What a peculiar name. Well, I’ve heard stranger names in my lifetime. I’m Sam,” he revealed, his voice warm and inviting. “So, what landed you in this place?” he asked. “I was involved in the creation and sale of ghost weapons,” I confessed, a tinge of regret in my voice. “Ghost weapons… ah, yes, I’ve heard about them. You mean those 3D-printed guns? You must have had quite the knack for designing them,” Sam remarked, genuinely interested. “I suppose you could say that, though I never intended for things to turn out this way,” I explained, a mix of frustration and remorse seeping into my words. Sam’s voice filled with curiosity as he asked, “What do you mean?” “Let’s just say I was caught up in a difficult situation. Growing up as an orphan, I found myself entangled with the wrong crowd, doing whatever it took to survive. Unfortunately, that path led me to get involved in the production of ghost weapons. I had no choice, really. It was a matter of self-preservation,” I confessed, a hint of vulnerability in my voice. I don't know why, but confessing to Sam felt warm, like talking with a friend. Listening intently, Sam responded empathetically, “Sometimes life pushes us into corners we never anticipated. It’s not always easy to make the right choices when survival is at stake.” Encouraged by his understanding, I continued, “Exactly. I didn’t want any part in it, but circumstances forced my hand. I was coerced into designing those guns under the threat of exposure. However, fate had its own plans. When I went to deliver the weapons, the authorities swooped in, intercepting the guns before they could be used for harm. In a strange way, I felt a sense of relief that they didn’t end up causing any damage.” Sam nodded thoughtfully before sharing his own story, “Well, in my case, I had quite an extraordinary entrance into this prison. I fell through a portal and ended up here.” Oh great, I am talking to a lunatic.

2023.06.01 11:56 Ernislav How to setup a microphone properly
Hi, recently, I'm doing my best to switch to linux full time, but there are still few thing that I'm missing.
One of them is my audio quality. I have Logitech pro x wireless and on windows I could do everything with 3 click on logitech G hub. But on linux, I've run into few issues.
I downloaded easyeffects and started to tinker a bit with microphone, but here are the issues: -I don't know much about audio, so I was doing most of the things blindly -Even when I got satisfactory results, people on discord told me, that I sound much worse than on windows -With microphone options anbled, my audio deteriorated and it started crackling while using 2 apps, for example discord and game. Disabling microphone options can fix this, but then, people can barely hear me. I've also tried to mess a bit with pipewire config and it got a bit better, but still far from optimal.
Can you recommend any tutorials? Tips? Maybe use something else than easyeffects? Which option in pipewire exactly makes my audio crack? Any good microphone setup presets?
btw. using openSUSE tumbleweed, but had this issues on other distros too

2023.06.01 11:56 justsomeguy_why Low-key great loot spots?
Hey there, I apologize if this question was asked to death. I've recently got back into DayZ as I haven't played it since like 2014 and a lot of things are really new to me. Me and my buddy are playing on a vanilla 1st person only server and surviving has been hard as fuck. We played for three days now and we still barely get by, we finally figured out fishing yesterday and at least we have some food now, but aside from that we are complete bums, all I have is this SG rifle we looted from police station with 3 bullets to my name, which honestly I'll probably use to commit murder suicide at this point. We have no gear to actually raid any military base with confidence, NWA is completely out of question, there are constant gunshots in that area and that is scary af. So I was wondering if you could tell me where exactly can we find some decent loot, yet stay relatively safe doing so? I've read an article that said something about Summer camps, but I have no clue where those are. We are in the woods near Kabanino, so if you know of any places in that area, I'd highly appreciate it.

2023.06.01 11:55 EmoCow1 Healthcare related question! Should I put my hamster down? I don't know if it is the right decision.
FIRST OF ALL, I am aware of the rules this subreddit has. I will take the risk with the advices that will potentially be given to me here.
I have two syrian hamsters called Georgie and Cotton. I got Georgie when he was about 2 months old in a pet shop (which was approximately 11 months ago). When he came home, I immediately noticed that his eye had a little lump. His left eye was squinting most of the time. The pet shop said that he will grow out of it, then after a few months of having Georgie (probably around 3 months?) His lump on his eye started growing bigger and it started spreading small lumps all over his face.
I went to an animal clinic in hopes that they have an exotic vet to treat my hamster, but sadly no. An exotic vet is not available anywhere near my area, and my parents believe that travelling 6hrs+ to go to an exotic vet just to treat a hamster is not practical, but I completely understand them.
I changed paper bedding brands because Georgie might be allergic, also fixed both my hamsters' diets with varieties of fresh fruits/vegetables and a mixture of hamster foodmix. (dw they have separate cages, which are 24x28, and i know which fruits and vegetables are safe for hamsters) I don't think its something in their water bowls and their water bottles because I clean them, and replace the water daily. Also, both my hamsters have the same conditions, but the other hamster- Cotton, is doing fine.
Right now he has two lumps on both his eyes (large ones) and can no longer see. He also has a REALLY large lump on his right hand, two small lumps on both his feet, and medium to large lumps all over his body, especially his belly. I stopped putting my hand in the cage and completely stopped picking him up about 5 months ago. (He used to bond with me, and he does not bite when my hand is in the cage. He really did not mind it.)
Lately, he started screaming alone randomly, he does not move too much anymore, he completely stopped using his wheel, stopped chewing, and stopped burrowing. I'm so sad because it means he's probably so stressed.
I don't have my parent's approval to go to the vet to give Georgie Euthanasia, but they have suggested to just give him something that could hopefully give him a painless death. I don't even know if I should have him put to sleep. I'm just thinking about what's the best for him as a hamster. What do you guys think should I do?

2023.06.01 11:55 ChronicAuthoritis My (Probably) Haunted Apartment
I was sitting here, contemplating posting an update to my story, when something just happened that sort of forced my hand.
So, a few weeks ago, I posted about hearing a young girl/child tonelessly utter ‘oh no’ in my apartment, coming from the hallway behind me. In my next post I detailed everything strange I’d seen and heard, from the shadow of the woman’s arm I’d seen in the doorway to my dining room, to the swish of skirts behind me in the same room, that I watched from between my legs while bent over grabbing a water bottle, to even the whispering I’d heard while sitting down and watching a Youtube video.
Well, I’m back, and there’s more.
In the time since my last post, I’ve grown more and more uncomfortable sleeping in my bedroom. For one reason or another, I’ve gone from being able to sleep rather soundly through the night, to waking up after only a few hours and being wholly unable to get back to sleep. I started having those dreams where you can’t talk right, like no matter how much you try you can’t ever get the words out. I’ve had these from time to time, but it was becoming every time I went back to sleep.
More and more, while I slept there, I started hearing what I assume to be a squirrel in the wall between my bedroom and the living room, even during the day, but only while I was sleeping in that bed, and only during the day. Now, squirrels in my walls aren’t that unusual, but normally I’ve only heard them in the outside walls, nt in the middle of the apartment.
One day in particular stands out, where I was taking a nap in the middle of the day. I was nearly asleep, drifting in that state between wakefulness and sleep, when I heard it.
A voice ‘pssting’ me from somewhere in the room.
Now, I’m no stranger to hallucinating voices or sounds, scraps of dreams as I’m about to go to sleep, and after hurriedly looking around the room, spooked, I closed my eyes and started falling back asleep.
I get jolted awake a few moments later by the same voice ‘pssting’ me again.
Deciding sleep was for the weak, I got up, shakily, and left my bedroom behind. Over the next few weeks, sleeping in my bedroom became more and more difficult. Once, while laying there, I began to hear thumping coming from somewhere, and another whisper in my ear. I woke up another time and thought I saw a figure standing by my bed, though I have to wear glasses, and without them I’m pretty blind. I’ve got an old radio that I brought from my parents house and use as a nightstand. I might have just, half asleep and pretty blind, mistook the radio for a person, though that doesn’t quite explain it, as the radio isn’t the same height as a person.
I’ve got my great grandad’s suit butler (a little wooden thing where somebody might hang a suit.) sitting by bed, pushed up against the corner and out of the way, after I tripped over it, moved it to a different room in the house, and tripped over it again. (I doubt it’s the source of any haunting, as I’ve only had it since mid-2022 and the weird stuff’s been happening since before that.) More than once, I’ve woken up groggily, rolling over, seeing it, and being convinced it’s a mirror. (there’s a hole in the middle of the thing that could be mistaken for a mirror if you didn’t know what you were looking at.)
So, for about a week now, I’ve been sleeping in my living room, on an old broken down couch to see if I sleep any better. Now, for years, ever since I moved in, I’ll occasionally feel a gust of cold air against the back of my neck, something I’ve always attributed to the ceiling fan, or one of the other fns in the room. Just a few minutes ago, while standing in the bathroom, I felt a similar gust of cold air against my knees. Now, there’s a standing fan in the hallway, but it was positioned just on the other side of the bathroom door, and was pointed down the hallway, nowhere near the bathroom.
It was after that incident that I began to contemplate posting and update. As I was sitting here, listening to a video and having basically convinced myself that I probably hadn’t had enough happen to justify posting an update, I heard it.
The sound of something falling over, cracking, chipping, like glass being pushed off of something. I got up (after several minutes) and did a loop of my apartment, and haven’t found anything yet that might have caused it.
I’m pretty certain my apartment’s haunted.

2023.06.01 11:55 Remarkable_Style3929 How do you eat canned sardines correctly? because they mostly lack the instructions in the back of the can like where's the instruction manual it's so fucking inconvenient. My Family and myself included have been eating them raw for the whole time.
2023.06.01 11:55 Independent_Cod_6474 My [29F] partner [27M] refuses to pay rent after 11 years. I am disabled and don't know if this is acceptable?
I'll preface this by saying I am a disabled person (my partner knew this early in our relationship when I got diagnosed.) So I have been on and off on UK benefits for a while. I guess that's why I've lived this way because I feel bad that I can't contribute more.
He works full time and he lives with his parents, he doesnt pay them rent and most nights he wants to stay with me, if I didn't stop him he would be here every night but I refuse to let him while doesn't pay any household rent or bills. Apart from the occasional electric bill and I have to pester him multiple times for it sometimes. He refuses to make it official and live together because he can't seem to save enough.
He earnt £1900 this month after tax and complained that he thought it would be more. (New job, emergency tax etc)
My household rent is currently £450 and will probably go up to about 600-650 if someone with a full time job moved in. (This is insanely cheap where I'm from) I also get benefits that are non-means tested meaning I can still contribute around £500-550 a month which isn't much but still.
I am trying very hard to be open minded as I know times are tough, but I see our friends and their partners struggling together, which is not something I want don't get me wrong, but I guess I just don't feel secure with him anymore. I've been incredibly communicative about all of this. He tells me. "I'll move in when you need me to."
What do I do?
Any thoughts appreciated.

FYI, this is a story COLLECTION. Lots of standalones technically. So, you can basically start to read at any chapter, no pre-read of the other chapters needed technically (other than maybe getting better descriptions of characters than: Adam Vir=human, Krill=antlike alien, Sunny=tall alien, Conn=telepathic alien). The numbers are (mostly) only for organization of posts and continuity.

And once again the human craze takes over the whole galaxy!

Here is the link to the master-post.
"Welcome one and welcome all to the 528th quadrennial summer Olympics! This has to be the most exciting day we have seen in the history of competitive sports."
"That's exactly right because this is only the second time in human history that the Olympics will be held off earth, and the first time that they are being held interstellar."
"Four years ago, some summer Olympics were held on Mars, but with the restriction to gravity, and some issues regarding respiration. However, after an agreement with the Galactic Assembly. The Rundi delegation has graciously offered to host the 4020 summer Olympics."
"And hosted they have. This stadium was built in under four years with consultations from human architects and with the original classic style of greek and roman architecture in mind. The Rundi really do know how to make a beautiful building when they want."
"This is honestly what the universe really needed after these last hard few years, with the Burg war, and the Gromm outbreak, and the Tesraki earthquake, a lot of people were just ready and waiting for some good news. Not to mention that after all of the issues with the LFIL and poor PR for humans across the galaxy, we all really needed a break."
"And what better PR than to share one of the greatest cultural achievements of human history? Historically the Olympics have been a time where countries set aside their differences and come together to show off their best athletes in competitions of human skill, fortitude, and perseverance. Now, for those non-human watchers, the Olympics were originally established in Ancient Greece. The word Olympics derives from the word Olympus which was the historical home of the Greek gods. Anyone who competes in the games is called an Olympian giving the implication that their feats of strength and power are almost godlike."
"Not to mention they originally required the participants to compete in the nude."
"Ha! Yes, let us not forget that. Luckily, or unluckily for us, things have been a bit more modernized since then, and men and women from around the universe will begin their competitions today. Today will be the first Olympics in history with representatives from interstellar colonies all across the Milky Way galaxy."
"Beginning in the next four years, Olympic officials hope to open the games up to non-human species for competition."
"Yes, officials say that it would be an opportunity for humanity to reach out a hand of peace and offer this great tradition of peace to the rest of the galaxy in hopes of fostering cooperation and understanding between all who live in the universe."
"That will be a great day indeed, and look here comes the Olympic torch, carried by none other than commander Adam Vir of the UNSC, Earth's golden boy."
"The Olympic torch had an intense journey this year, lit in Olympic greece and carried all across Earth, to where it was secured to be transported on the UNSC harbinger. They debated long and hard about who would light it this year, and as a symbol of good will towards the rest of the galaxy, and to usher in a new age of the Olympic Games, the torch has been passed to the chairwoman of the Galactic Assembly."
"You know it really warms my heart to see us humans sharing such a rich part of our culture and history with the rest of the galaxy. It really is a symbol of everything we stand for at our core."
"And there she goes. IT'S LIT IT'S LIT!"
"A truly amazing day for humanity, the world, the galaxy and the universe!"
And truly amazing it was!

Thanks for reading! As you saw in the title, this is a cross posted story written by starrfallknightrise and I'll just upload some of it here for you guys, if you are interested and want to read ahead, the original story-collection can be found on tumblr or wattpad to read for free. (link above this text under "OC:..." ) It is the Empyrean Iris story collection by starfallknightrise. Also, if you want to know more about the story collection i made an intro post about it, so feel free to check that out to see what other great characters to look forward to! (Link also above this text). I have no affiliations to the author; just thought I’d share some of the great stories you might enjoy a lot!
Obviously, I have Charlie’s permission to post this and for the people already knowing the stories, or starting to read them: If you follow the link and check out the story you will see some differences. I made some small (non-artistic) changes, mainly correcting writing mistakes, pronoun correction and some small additional info here and there of things which were not thought of/forgotten or even were added/changed in later stories (like the “USS->UNSC” prefix of Stabby, Chalar=/->Sunny etc). As well as some "biggemajor" changes in descriptions and info’s for the same stringency/continuity reason. That can be explained by the story collection being, well a story collection at the start with many standalone-stories just starring the same people, but later on it gets more to a stringent storyline with backstories and throwbacks. (For example Adam Vir has some HEAVY scars over his body, following his bones, which were not really talked about up till half the collection, where it says it covers his whole body and you find out via backflash that he had them the whole time and how he got them, they just weren't mentioned before. However, I would think a doctor would at least see these scars before that, especially since he gets analyzed, treated and goes shirtless/in T-shirts in some stories). So TLDR: Writing and some descriptions are slightly changed, with full OK from the author, since he himself did not bother to correct these things before.

2023.06.01 11:53 Kafkah09 Planning accommodations as a post grad international student
I'm planning to live somewhere near the city then taking the train to Caulfield since it looks like I won't have classes everyday and I'm a pretty city guy who's lucky to have saved for a wider choice of accommodation.
It's a bit confusing to me as I only see properties that require physical inspection vs. the ready-to-rent but super expensive student accommodations. As much as possible, I'd want to have a place before arriving in Melb. Is it best practice to find a temporary place first for like 1 month and then find a more permanent place and do the whole inspection thing?
If yea, any recos for those temporary places? Thanks a bunch!

2023.06.01 11:52 Old_Blacksmith_2138 Birth registration not including husbands details/potential future re-registration in future
I'm in Scotland I'm sending this as a follow up/side post to another thread I made - see
https://www.reddit.com/LegalAdviceUK/comments/13urbt2/going_on_holiday_without_childs_fathers_consent/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 Point to note - got married in September 2022 in Denmark (not registered here) and seperated shortly after in October 2022 (!!) after he was physically violent with me when pregnant, days after the wedding and then i later found out he had been with a long term ex of 9 years. I am planning to divorce him in October from Scotland once our year of seperation has passed. I did not take his surname (didnt have time to even if i wanted to!)
As this states, I am due to register my sons birth next week, with one of my concerns being that doing so would enable my sons absent (Mexico) abusive, controlling father to need to give us said permission every time we go on holiday. The reason i list this is the primary concern is because whilst I understand being married/being on the birth certificate gives him PRR, I am almost certain these wouldnt be enforced legally (lack of knowledge of UK legal system, limited English, being in Mexico, high cost of a solicitor, and above all lack of desire) so as I understand it, the going abroad thing is the only thing which requires the consent of both parties and not just one.
The previous post covers this however but I am looking advice on option 2 - not putting his details down on the cert.
I took legal advice on this in September 2022 and was advised that whilst I wasnt able to lie about my status despite scotland "not knowing" i'm married (if seperated is an option I should pick this) I wouldnt be compelled to complete my marriage details/fathers details section although this may be challenged by the registrar. Not putting his details down wouldnt technically mean he doesnt have PRR, but it would potentially enable me to travel etc without issue. She said he could only request these go back on via a court order (slim to no chance he'll do this for reasons listed above). For a while I was satisfied with this until the day came and i spoke to another legal person and basically had conflicting advice that i "had" to put the details down and also that it may not be accepted. On top of this I have the ethical dilamma too.
There are a few reasons for putting his name down; 1) Son would be entitled to dual nationality in the future 2) presumably my son would have right to his estate in the event of his death 3) Moral reasons - knowing who his dad was etc
Reasons against 1) Controlling/aggressive nature - unpredictable nature and would have fear hanging over me if he did re-enter UK 2) Having to potentially seek consent to go on holiday for the next 18 years, from a man who hasnt even met his son (aware I can get a court order but cant afford to pay £260 every time on top of holiday costs) 3) freedom knowing I have the autonomy to make whatever decisions need to for my son
With all this, I had initally thought that maybe the best course of action was to attempt to leave it blank with the view to re-registering the birth once i know better the lay of the land. See
https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/registration/re-registration-of-birth-or-stillbirth which describes this, although i appreciate this is geared towards marriages that havent yet happened or change of situations. I did call NRS up and asked what would happen in the event of not putting the detals down originally and they said this would be considered "false information", I challenged them and said how can it be false if its just ommitted and he didnt respond. He then said the re-registration would require an explanation being provided as to why this wasnt provided to begin with.
Some questions for you amazing people who have made it this far through my mess:
1) Do you understand it as per my first solicitor and that the fathers details could be left blank? 2) Based on the information above, do you think there are stronger reasons for putting his details or omitting? 3) On the re-registration, has anyone had any experiences of this as i have been told "its difficult"? 4) Do you think that they couldnt potentially let me re-register if i have solid evidence we were married at said point in time? Or is this going to open me up to get into trouble for not having put them down to begin with?
massive TIA - the stress of this on top of a newborn and no sleep has been torture for me

2023.06.01 11:52 sparklehorse43 Going in different directions, but wanting to stay in the same place
Tl;Dr At wits' end; unhappy, want something new. Is ENM for me?
OK, I'll try and keep this brief. Both 43, married 18 years, together 22. Two teenage kids.
Things have been ho hum for years (in my view); just going through the motions, getting the job done; making sure the kids turn out right.
Relationship has always been a roller-coaster of love/weird resentment. Classic male provider - woman caregiver thing, even though I've always been 100% willing to step up. Just happens (that's society), my skillset more $$ valued than hers as a teacher. We also have fundamentally opposed mindsets (yes, structural male entitlement), with me always the optimist, and she always the pessimist.
So we get to me having my (third? Haha) mid life crisis. She's always been super critical, passive aggressive, and generally taken advantage of my giving nature for as long as we've been together. I don't mean to cast her in a bad light. I love her, and think she's a beautiful person... in most respects. But I realise I want something more.
I want affection, respect, to be loved and appreciated. And she hasn't been able to give me this for so long, even after trying to talk about and resolve this several times in the last few years. But I don't want to, and I don't think it's in the kids' interests to leave. She's still my best friend, and it would kill her to go. But I think I need something else now, because I want to be happy, and she won't change.
So I found than ENM is a thing, and I want to know, is this for me? And for people in similar situations, how did/does it work for you?
