2023.06.01 11:51 Pitiful-Cucumber-597 The Diplomat magazine exposed Yan Limeng and Guo Wengui as anti-communist swindlers
Guo Wengui has been arrested in the United States in connection with a $1 billion fraud. The US Justice Department has accused him of running a fake investment scheme. Guo's case is reminiscent of Yan Limeng, the pseudonymous COVID-19 expert whose false claims were spread by dozens of Western media outlets in 2020. Ms. Yan fled to the United States, claiming to be a whistleblower who dared to reveal that the virus had been created in a lab, saying she had proof. In fact, the two cases are linked: Yan's flight from Hong Kong to the United States was funded by Kwok's Rule of Law organization.
Yan's false paper has not been examined and has serious defects. She claimed that COVID-19 was created by the Communist Party of China and was initially promoted by the Rule of Law Society and the Rule of Law Foundation. Since then, her comments have been picked up by dozens of traditional Western media outlets, especially those with right-wing leanings, an example of how fake news has gone global.
Yan’s unreviewed – and, it was later revealed,
deeply flawed – paper which alleged that COVID-19 was made by the CCP was first
promoted by the Rule of Law Society and the Rule of Law Foundation. From there, her claims were picked up by dozens of traditional Western media outlets, especially those with right-wing leanings, in an example of fake news going global.
She broke into the mainstream when she appeared on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and
Fox News, but that was just the beginning. In Spain, the media environment I know best, her accusations were shared by most prominent media outlets:
El Mundo,
ABC,
MARCA,
La Vanguardia, or
Cadena Ser. Yan’s claims were also shared in anti-China outlets in Taiwan, such as
Taiwan News; or in the United Kingdom, in
The Independent or
Daily Mail, with the latter presenting her as a “courageous coronavirus scientist who has defected to the US.” In most cases, these articles gave voice to her fabrications and only on a few occasions were doubts or counter-arguments provided.
Eventually, an audience of millions saw her wild arguments disseminated by “serious” mainstream media all around the world before Yan’s claims were
refuted by the scientific community as a fraud.
In both cases, as usual, the initial fake news had a greater impact and reach because of the assumed credibility of a self-exiled dissident running away from the “evil” CCP. Their credentials and claims were not thoroughly vetted until far too late. Anti-China news has come to be digested with gusto by Western audiences. Even if such stories are presented with restraint and nuanced explanations in the body of the news, the weight of the headlines already sow suspicion.
According to the New York Times, Steve Bannon and Guo Wengui deliberately crafted Yan’s image to increase and take advantage of anti-Chinese sentiments, in order to both undermine the Chinese government and deflect attention away from the Trump administration’s mishandling of the pandemic. These fake news stories still resonate today. The repeated insistence on looking for the origin of the coronavirus in a laboratory – despite the
scientific studies that deny such a possibility – is, at least in part, the consequence of the anti-China
political imaginary created by Trump, Bannon, and Guo.

2023.06.01 11:35 HungJury-SR4 Looking absolutely beautiful for Christmas 2022
2023.06.01 11:30 SenatorSassypants The Emergency Room staff treated me like an addict, refused to believe me, sent me home after giving me a shot of anti anxiety meds, turns out it was MS.
This is probably going to be a long one, so I’m sorry for the read… I just really needed to let this rant out.
So, last year on August of 2022, I ended up doing a weeklong stint at the local hospital, due to an exacerbation two whole days after being formally diagnosed with MS. In the hospital I learned that I had/have active inflammation along my spine, as well as in my brain, most notably a 2cm wide lesion on the left side of my brain, as well as many along my lower spine.
What lead to the diagnosis were the telltale MS Symptoms of double vision, numbness of my extremities (legs, left arm), speech issues and an abnormal gait. The following two days, the symptoms progressively became worse, until I inevitably took a fall and found myself unable to pick myself back up due to (temporarily) losing the use of my legs for around 10-15 minutes. I could move them, but couldn’t feel them and they had no strength to support me. My step father had to pick me up off the floor. I cried in his arms like a baby.
I spent the next 5 days in the hospital, being given steroid treatments and undergoing a whole bunch of other tests. While I was there, however, a lot of the staff kept asking me if there were any problems I had in the past that I had noticed that would have keyed me in to the fact that I had this condition before I ended up in the hospital.
It didn’t hit me until about the third day I was there that I had.
Actually about a year or so before that hospitalization, I ended up in the same hospital’s emergency room, due to experiencing the same exact symptoms, though less severe, but still “textbook MS symptoms” as put by my neurologist.
I ended up going there that night, due to having a panic attack that was admittedly brought upon by a high dose of a cannabis edible (legal in my state/use it for anxiety), but it wasn’t the cannabis causing me to panic, it was the fact that it genuinely made me realize how bad the numbness in my left arm and lower body was.
A family member called the ambulance, initially thinking I was having a stroke, as I had been mumbling/slurring my words, as well as complaining about the numbness, double vision, and stumbling as I walked. Unfortunately, this family member also let the emergency services know that I had been taking cannabis that night and that plus anxiety is literally all the EMTs would take the cause of the issue as, despite me insisting that 1. I had NEVER had cannabis make me unable to FEEL MY ARM or make me unable to PROPERLY USE MY LEGS TO WALK without dragging them along and 2. I’ve dealt with an anxiety disorder for most of my life at that point and had never had it do that to me either. They offered to take me to the ER to get me looked at and I went, because of course I fucking wanted to.
But then that just brings me to the worst part of this whole situation.
“How many idiots does that make tonight?” Was literally the first thing I remember hearing a nurse say as they brought me in. They had one view of me by that point, before even bothering to take a look at me, which they barely did at all. At that point I had been in hysterics, due to a cycling pain in my arm/shoulder, I will say the cannabis didn’t help when it came to articulating what was wrong, but I never really got moments to speak.
The moments I did get to speak were just me answering questions about my mental health, because once they keyed into my history of mental health issues (anxiety/depression) it seemed like that’s all they would believe it to be, despite me heavily insisting that it was not those things and it was not the marijuana.
They took it as me justifying or defending my usage of it, or as trying to play the medical professional and going against everything they said. I kept asking to speak to someone who would actually listen. Had they given me the time, they would have known I had been experiencing those symptoms for MONTHS by that point, but all they did was give me a shot of anti anxiety medication (probably to shut me up), then send me home with a prescription for the antidepressants I use and a pamphlet on how to quit smoking.
The symptoms eventually went away after a month or two after, but when they came back the following year, I had been too ashamed from that previous experience to seek medical attention. I just thought “I experienced this before and it went away eventually, so I’ll just wait it out until they go away.”
They didn’t.
In fact, they got worse.
I finally made an appointment after the double vision had gotten so bad, I could barely see. I saw an eye doctor, who noticed the nystagmus of my eyes and directed me to a neurologist, who then diagnosed me with multiple sclerosis.
Then, I was changing my shirt two days after and my legs suddenly collapsed out from under me.
The rest is history.
I’ve since started Ocrevus infusions and so far have been showing signs of improvement (can wiggle my toes after not being able to for MONTHS!), but I just can’t help but think that I could have gotten help/put on treatment the year before, had anyone in the emergency room actually listened to me and done some actual tests, instead of just ignoring me and loudly ridiculing me in the halls.
I’m sorry this was so long, I didn’t expect it to be, but I guess that experience was a lot more traumatizing for me than I initially thought. I genuinely just wanted to rant about it and how hopeless and reluctant to receive medical care it made me for when the exact same symptoms re-emerged about a year later.
Thank you for allowing me to do so.

2023.06.01 11:15 oddiemaddie To my dad.
To my dad. I genuinely hate you.
I genuinely hate you because you never treated me and my sister like we were your own. Recently, the day after Christmas you kicked me out (in 2022). And I cut you off (I'm 19). I know I should feel a sense of relief or maybe happiness even. But it's hard because you're my dad. You were supposed to support us growing up. You were supposed to help us understand how we were feeling growing up. You were supposed to act like a father. But instead, you constantly abused us, throwing stuff at us, screaming in our faces, etc. Do you still remember when I was 11, the first time I tried to commit suicide instead of trying to understand, or trying to help me you punished me. The day I got home I was welcomed to a kitchen full of dishes that you specifically didn't do just for me? Your wife even had a full fucking list of shit for me to do. I didn't even get to unpack my bags or take a hot shower (which I hadn't had one in days at the time.) You made me stay up until 4AM doing everything on that list. And the entire night you just sat there screaming and spitting in my face. I remembered when I finally when into my room I was shaking so bad that I couldn't even stand. I remember sitting there begging God to take my life away. But no that's not where it ended. You then took EVERYTHING out of my room. And left me with only my bed. Not a pillow, blanket, ANYTHING. And you would lock me in my room when the sun was starting to go down, I couldn't even go to the bathroom if I needed to. (I know this sounds gross and I'm embarrassed to admit this)I had to pee on towels in the middle of the night. You wouldn't even let me eat everyday. You only allowed me to eat every two days, and that was only oatmeal. It was one packet every two days (I could go on and on about everything he did but I'm gonna stop there.)Until I moved in with mom, I was finally able to eat normally again. Sometimes my stomach couldn't even keep down the real food I was eating. Yes, while I was at my mom's we struggled. Badly. There were times where we didn't have food for days, but she still tried to make ends meet. She wasn't the best mother growing up but she admitted it and I forgave her. However, when I moved back in with you when I was 16 it was the only choice I had. My bedroom at moms was in a basement, my bed had mold, bedbugs, and mushrooms were growing down there. I thought you had changed. Until the screaming in my face started happening again. One night it got so bad that you tried to knock my ass out but missed and hit the door. I was sitting there crouched, hyperventilating, crying, shaking. I think that was the moment i had decided to stand up for myself. I bet you weren't expecting me to get up and yell in your face. I remember screaming at you, "I won't make you have me go through this again! I'm not little anymore!! You sit here and scream in my face thinking you'll get something out of it?! No! More than anything I hope you know that when you're sitting there on your death bed you won't have ANYONE there for you. You'll die alone."
Even though I hate you. All I ever wanted was for you to love me. But yet you called me "soft" because I was nice, I was kind, I wasn't scared to help people. Or it's because maybe I showed my expressions and my feelings. A part of me wants you to be in my life so badly. I want you to be able to meet your grandchildren, to walk me down the aisle on my wedding day, to not be alone when you die. But regardless of how many times I tried to reach out, you ignored it.
So I hope your happy that everyone, including your children hates you. I hope it was worth choosing your wife over us.
I hope youre happy that you traumatized your kids, and gave them both PTSD from the things you've done to us. And I hope you and your wife's reputation gets ruined.

2023.06.01 11:01 Successful-Wasabi704 Shipping Megathread - June 2023
Please discuss anything relating to FedEx, GLS (or ParcelForce) here. Anything from your experience (positive or negative), questions regarding delivery wait times or delivery issues, and delivery damage images all belong in this megathread.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who will ship my Steam Deck?
In North America (US/CA), this will be [FedEx](
https://www.fedex.com/en-us/tracking.html). RMA's are also processed by [FedEx](
https://www.fedex.com/en-us/tracking.html).
In Europe, this will be [GLS](
https://gls-group.eu/EU/en/parcel-tracking). In the UK, this will be [ParcelForce](
https://www.parcelforce.com/track-trace) or [EVRI](
https://www.evri.com/) (formerly known as Hermes), usually in times of industrial action. RMA's in Europe are by [DHL](
https://www.dhl.com/global-en/home/tracking.html).
In Komodo regions we aren't sure yet. It will almost certainly be a large, local courier service. Regardless of who ships it, you will receive a tracking number to follow your Deck's progress.
Update for December 2022 via Valve:
"Starting December 1st, customers in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan who have already reserved their Steam Deck will receive email confirmations to finalize their orders. These orders will start shipping on December 17th."
"We're happy to announce that Steam Decks will start shipping in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan on December 17th via Komodo, our official Steam Deck distributor in these regions. Customers in these regions can reserve the Steam Deck here: steamdeck.komodo.jp"
Source:
https://nitter.net/OnDeck/status/1597776258414542849
I'm stuck on 'Shipping Soon!', help!
It's normal for your order to stay on 'Shipping Soon' for several days. We usually see Steam Deck's delivered within 6-8 working days after placing the order. A business day is considered Mon-Fri.
If it has been longer than 8 working days and it's still on 'Shipping Soon', you should contact [Steam Support](
https://help.steampowered.com/en/) for assistance. If you have tracking but are past 8 working days, you should await your Steam Deck for longer, unless it has been 5 working days since your last tracking update, in which case you should contact [Steam Support](
https://help.steampowered.com/en/).
My tracking says pre-advice / awaiting parcel, help!
This is a normal step in the process, this means your parcel is somewhere between Valve's warehouse and your delivery providers first sorting hub. Parcels are not scanned until they reach this hub, and therefore it can show as pre-advice / awaiting parcel even if they do currently have the parcel.
This usually changes within 1 working day, though don't be alarmed as it can take up to 3 working days (working days, Mon-Fri). If it's been longer than that, you should contact [Steam Support](
https://help.steampowered.com/en/).
Do FedEx/GLS/ParcelForce deliver on Sundays?
[FedEx delivers to \~80% of the US population on a Sunday.](
https://www.fedex.com/en-us/shipping/saturday-and-sunday-delivery.html#Sunday)
In Europe, as with most delivery companies, GLS (& ParcelForce) does not typically deliver on a Sunday. They may do so in times of peak demand (around Christmas), but outside of this it's unlikely.
Both FedEx and GLS do deliver on Saturdays though!
(UK) My parcel is stuck in customs, what do I do?
This can happen in both the RMA and delivery process, but this will usually be sorted and cleared through customs after a short delay. In uncommon cases, it may take longer (on a scale of working days), but will still clear.
However, if at any point the tracking says that additional information is required, please contact [Steam Support](
https://help.steampowered.com/en/).
(UK) My parcel hasn't updated from the Netherlands in several days, should I be concerned?
No, you should not be concerned. This is because there is no tracking update between it leaving the Netherlands Hub, and it arriving in the UK for customs checks. Depending on several events outside of the control of GLS/ParcelForce, there are many different reasons why this could take a long period of time.
My Steam Deck is delayed, I'm annoyed!
Sorry to hear that your Steam Deck has been delayed. Unfortunately, as with any delivery service, it's possible for issues and delays to occur during the delivery process.
So long as your shipping provider is giving you frequent updates, and has not elapsed more than 5 working days without an update, hang tight!
If you haven't received an update in over 5 working days (Mon-Fri), please contact [Steam Support](
https://help.steampowered.com/en/).
My Steam Deck is broken/stolen/lost from delivery, help!
You should contact [Steam Support](
https://help.steampowered.com/en/) as soon as possible so that a replacement can be arranged.

2023.06.01 09:32 vdmendoza I don’t know how to break this cycle and I fear I may never reach my goals because of it, any tips?
I (26F, 5’4) don’t know what I weigh currently because I’m stuck in one of these cycles at the moment. I have been so close to my goal weight (145lbs) during the past 3 years and then I ruin it for myself by over indulging for days/weeks or even months and then I’m back to what I started or even heavier. In 2021 I gave loosing weight a second chance by actually getting a personal trainer, things were going well I started in Christmas 2020 weighing 175 and by April of that year I was down to 165. Then all of a sudden one day of weekends turned into months of cheating and over eating and it was very hard to get back on my grind. I would hop on it and get off and it was just an on going cycle. Fast forward to January 2022 I now weight 181lbs BUT I got it in the bag this time, I know what I’m doing and I love my routine and my exercises and all my clothes is fitting great and I am literally starting to take more pictures everything is going great and by May I’m at 162. All of a sudden things start to spiral out of control again and months go by of the same cycle and by December 2022 I’m now at 187. In March with about the same weight (187) I decided to try again and a week ago I was sitting at 176, but it’s starting to happen again, it’s been a week of over indulging and just having no motivation of disciple and I fear things are going to spiral out of control. I currently do struggle with depression/anxiety and I am on medication to treat it. This past week has been so tough to get back on and I just really don’t want to workout. I am in this funk and I just want to be able to break out of these horrible cycles and actually get to my goal weight this time around.

Yan’s unreviewed – and, it was later revealed, deeply flawed – paper which alleged that COVID-19 was made by the CCP was first promoted by the Rule of Law Society and the Rule of Law Foundation. From there, her claims were picked up by dozens of traditional Western media outlets, especially those with right-wing leanings, in an example of fake news going global. She broke into the mainstream when she appeared on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and Fox News, but that was just the beginning. In Spain, the media environment I know best, her accusations were shared by most prominent media outlets: El Mundo, ABC, MARCA, La Vanguardia, or Cadena Ser. Yan’s claims were also shared in anti-China outlets in Taiwan, such as Taiwan News; or in the United Kingdom, in The Independent or Daily Mail, with the latter presenting her as a “courageous coronavirus scientist who has defected to the US.” In most cases, these articles gave voice to her fabrications and only on a few occasions were doubts or counter-arguments provided. Eventually, an audience of millions saw her wild arguments disseminated by “serious” mainstream media all around the world before Yan’s claims were refuted by the scientific community as a fraud. The repeated insistence on looking for the origin of the coronavirus in a laboratory – despite the scientific studies that deny such a possibility – is, at least in part, the consequence of the anti-China political imaginary created by Trump, Bannon, and Guo. submitted by ProtectionIll2578 to u/ProtectionIll2578 [link] [comments] |

2023.06.01 08:04 Personal_Echidna2534 I found myself allowing my long term boyfriend to mistreat and disrespect me, because his mother has been battling cancer for the past 4 years.
I’ve (f29) been with my boyfriend (m36) for 8 years and for half of the time we’ve been together, his mother received a terrible incurable mesothelioma diagnosis. I put every one of my needs aside and still do and that wasn’t/isnt the issue. I have always made sure he’s as comfortable as he can be. I tried to make him feel incredibly loved and tried to understand the new normal and how I could make life just even a little more easy for him. He was often short with me or snapped at me but then would apologize and say “it’s the stress from what’s going on in my family.” I always understood. I found myself saying “sorry” for nothing, walking on eggshells and he would get aggressive verbally, then apologize. I would cry and remember what life was like before. I repeated “be strong for him!” To myself. “Someone going through this needs people there for them no matter what”
This past year one of my little sisters (19) had a terrifying psychotic break. And was diagnosed with severe schizophrenia. She was found in the snow with no clothes on and bare feet. She was on a busy street, in the city of my home town on Christmas Eve of 2022. And even now over a year later she’s still in the hospital. When I told my boyfriend over the phone he told me “everything would be okay.” But when I cried longer than he was comfortable with he got frustrated and blurted out “At least she’s not dying like my mom! Be thankful” I was shocked and said “you’re right” but hurried off the call. Both of our families are now going through awful things and I find myself telling him nothing. Last night I was venting (I don’t with him anymore) and I told him (over the phone again) that she had a bad incident TW: she hurt herself. And he said “she’s gonna be fine” in a frustrated tone that sounded like someone at the end of their rope. I hurried off the phone again. The beautiful, happy, funny, silly love we had together couldn’t withstand family pain. I don’t know why he’s holding on (I’m afraid to ask) but for me I look at old photos/videos/messages and think of everything we planned and how much we just fit perfectly. I’m holding on to that last thread of my past life with him and who he used to be. I think he has said too many hurtful things to me (that I have let slide because of what he’s going through) for me to ever look at him the same way again. Even though he says that he needs me. I don’t feel like I’m helping him anymore and he’s definitely not helping me.

Guo Wengui #Ban Nong #Yan Limeng Guo Wengui has been arrested in the United States in connection with a $1 billion fraud.

2023.06.01 06:27 doesitreally_matter7 How do I handle grieving at work?
I started a new job a month ago, after quitting my previous job right after my dad passed on Christmas Eve 2022 and remaining unemployed for 4 months.
When I came in to interview for this job, my bosses asked about the reason behind me transitioning from a completely different industry to the one I’m in now. I told them honestly that the grief from losing my dad didn’t give me the emotional capacity to perform at my old job anymore, and I was also starting to get miserable there anyway. So my 2 bosses know my situation.
My other colleagues are for the most part really nice and welcoming. I’ve been able to adjust to the people at this new job pretty quickly considering it’s only been a month. However, I’m not close enough to tell them about my grief just yet.
Father’s Day is coming up. And we produce gifts at this company. So for the last few weeks, everyone’s been busy planning the Father’s Day campaign and designing the gift sets. My colleagues talk to each other about their dads and whether or not they would like these gift sets. I put on my earphones and distract myself without getting involved in the conversations. Recently though, they’ve been asking me for my opinions on the gift sets. One of my colleagues asked me, “Why don’t you call your dad right now and ask him which (design) he likes?” I smiled, but I was broken inside. Another one asked “Maybe you can bring it home for your parents to test out.” Broke me again.
I don’t know how to set boundaries here. I’m not comfortable enough to open up to them yet, and I know I can’t be angry at them cos they’re not doing it intentionally either. Thoughts?
