2023.06.01 10:52 Timeline40 Sorry for the negativit-eh, but Season 3 had more episodes and 3x the length as season 1 while saying less, accomplishing less, and joking less
I know this is a really annoying post, and please don't let me hurt anyone's enjoyment of the season, I'm just ranting.
This season was over 13 hours long; season 1 was under 5 hours. And yet, I feel like all of the character arcs were nonexistent, rushed, or just plain bad.
-Jamie's arc re: his dad was well done. His relationship with Roy was well done. This last episode seemed to just randomly bring back liking Keeley as a plot device for Roy, though.
-Roy became a diamond dog, but the moment didn't feel earned at all. We haven't seen him wrestling with needing advice but being unable to ask for advice. If we saw more of his breakup with Keeley last season and him feeling alone, this might have worked. He should have gotten to give Higgins' speech about asking for help; receiving the speech just means he never actually progressed until then.
-Keeley just kinda did stuff all season. I don't get what the writers were going for here, so maybe I'm just missing something. But the point seems to be "value strong friendships and personal growth/success over tying your identity fully to a romantic interest". Which, firstly, is constantly contradicted by Keeley ignoring and then halfhearteadly apologizing to Rebecca, and, two is contradicted by Beard's arc, and, three, didn't feel earned at all. The show was so concerned with the will they/won't they and love triangle and Jamie/Roy friendship that it didn't actually show Keeley making any of those realizations or that progress.
-Sam had no arc. No development with Rebecca, no final note on the restaurant or politics, which was given a substantial amount of time. He responded calmly to Edwin Akufo in S2 and then did the same thing in S3. That scene was long, pointless, and used for cheap laughs/callbacks with the glass in the pasta. Then, at the end, he just kinda makes the Nigerian team in a montage.
-Dani had no arc or development. He became mean as an inside joke to world cup fans and then became nice again. Totally out of character and a lot of screen time dedicated to a glorified fourth wall break with no real consequences. The Mask of Zorro joke was not funny or clever enough to be worth that much time.
-Zoreaux had no arc. I thought the Van Damme thing was a clever starting point for a mini-arc, except it was just overused as a joke. I heard "actually, it's Van Damme" like 15 times this season. Again, so much screentime meant none of the jokes or storylines were kept tight.
-Isaac's big moment was kicking a ball hard. Remember S2, where they picked his character, tightly explained and then creatively solved a conflict, and then that solution had an effect on the club? The pillow fight in Amsterdam was a clever callback but took up so much screen time, turned Zoreaux into a pervert, and also didn't really develop any characters.
-Beard's arc was about independently making choices and creating his whole life, I saw the thread on this. Except...the Ted backstory bomb was dropped last episode. Three seasons of Jane conflict and constantly turning his trauma into jokes and having Higgins address it led to...not much. The ending was played as a spoof of rom/coms, which is more of an endorsement than it should be, especially given the show's constant homages to rom-communism.
-Trent had no arc. He was already won over by S1 E3. Getting himself fired last season was a fantastic beat as the start of a larger arc, but it went basically nowhere - Trent respected Ted and mostly understood why his methods worked, and he still does. We got nothing from the book. Hell, Ted made the biggest change to the book. I get that he assisted others with their arcs, especially Colin, but he was set up to be so much more than that. Why was Rebecca so opposed to him being at Richmond in e1 if he'd go on to not even have a hint of a possible negative impact on anything?
-Rebecca's was a disaster. Holy hell did the psychic and the boat plot lines take up so much time. And they end with a 15 second meet cute with boat guy who just happens to have a daughter? Not emotionally satisfying or earned at all, just the writers making another cheap callback. "Hey look at this thing we did? Remember when we did that?"
-Slowly phasing Dr. Jacob out during the match was weird. A good arc would have been Michelle actively realizing that a partner sharing Henry's passions was more important than a partner being good to her - would have made her a more compelling character and been a more satisfying way to get rid of Jacob. Yes, this was kind of, sort of implied, but the show dropped the bombshell about him dating her ten episodes earlier and then didn't do much with it. It was an extensive, unnecessary, and annoying way to push Ted towards going back home.
-The show did a great job of tackling sensitive issues around masculinity and mental health in S1 and S2. In S3, Ted got rid of his anxiety by breathing, Dr. Jacob got described as being "borderline unethical" despite everyone on this sub rightfully calling him a worse human being than Rupert, and Jane's repeated emotional abuse and manipulation of Beard was always either a joke or brought up and then brushed off. S1 and S2 made tight, concise points; S3 brought up issues to seem deep but didn't feel like putting in the effort to address them in a nuanced and effective way.
-To get ahead of one possible response: Ted dreaming everything is a terrible fucking ending. Maybe it means less plot lines were horribly butchered, but it instead means those plot lines just weren't resolved at all, which is worse.
-Colin's arc was good. Every scene with Colin was amazing. Good job, writers.
-Nate's arc was solid. I have quibbles about the treatment of his dad, because a lifetime of emotional neglect and abuse can't be settled in a 2 minute conversation the way the show's other conflicts can, but whatever. The apology to Will and then Ted was great.
-Rupert's end was fitting. Also well done.
-Shandy, Jack have been discussed to death. Barf.
It's very late and I'm very annoyed, but I really hope some comments will give me another perspective. I'd like to find out what I'm missing about the finale before I flip out. I really wanted it to be satisfying - I got a little teary eyed at the ends of S1 and S2, and I gave S3 as much of the benefit of the doubt as I could - but I got basically nothing here. All the callbacks are cool, but callbacks alone ring hollow after a season the length of 6 movies. The show desperately wanted to be an hour long character-driven drama and didnt seem to deliver for almost all of those characters.

2023.06.01 10:28 Kittym0nkey Wall Streets Next Big Play(WSJ)
| Wall Street’s Next Big Play Is Garbage Landfill firms are investing in trash-gas production and recycling technology By Ryan Dezember and Will Feuer May 28, 2023 at 9:00 am ET The green push by the U.S. and state governments is turning trash into treasure and boosting the firms that handle America’s garbage. Shares of the biggest players in the U.S. trash business, Waste Management and Republic Services RSG -0.26%, have traded at record highs since President Biden signed the climate, tax and healthcare bill in August. A recent decline notwithstanding, the stocks are popular picks on Wall Street to ride the sustainability boom higher. “They’re sitting in this extraordinary position,” said Michael Hoffman, an analyst at investment bank Stifel. “Garbage will be on the forefront.” Efforts to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and to reuse materials are making it more profitable to mine landfills for energy and sift through refuse for the hot commodities of the green economy, such as detergent bottles and cardboard boxes. WM and Republic are building plants to isolate methane from the fumes emitted by rotting garbage and pipe it into the natural-gas grid to be burned in power plants, furnaces and kitchens. They are also equipping recycling facilities with the latest in automation to better sort and process materials for the consumer-goods companies that are under pressure to keep their packaging out of landfills and the ocean. Advertisement - Scroll to Continue Landfill owners are forecasting hundreds of millions of dollars in additional profit from rising demand for recycled materials and tax incentives for making energy from emissions that would otherwise seep into the atmosphere. “We’re blessed to be sitting right in the middle of a megatrend,” Republic Chief Executive Jon Vander Ark said. “We used to think about getting 5% top-line growth a year; now we’re in double-digit top-line growth mode.” Republic, which has 206 active landfills, has a joint venture with a unit of BP to install gasworks at 43 of its dumps. The Phoenix firm has 65 landfill-gas plants. Some feed utility pipelines. Others generate electricity on site. Republic is also spending about $275 million to build four polymer-processing facilities that will sort the plastic it collects curbside and turn it into flakes for new bottles and jugs. Advertisement - Scroll to Continue Vander Ark said consumer-product companies face minimum post-consumer-content mandates in California, Washington and other states, as well as their own sustainability goals. Republic’s first plastics plant is scheduled to open later this year in Las Vegas. Customers lined up. “There’s fighting among customers about who gets what,” Vander Ark said. Analysts say one risk is that adding exposure to volatile markets for commodities and renewable-fuel credits might spook investors interested in the steady and predictable profits involved in dumping garbage into landfills. Executives say the sustainability businesses are supplementary and moneymakers even when commodity prices are low, like now. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS Where are you seeing investment opportunities in sustainability? Join the conversation below. “Yes, there’s a year-over-year impact, but recycling is still profitable,” said Tara Hemmer, WM’s chief sustainability officer. “It still is one of our highest return-on-capital investments.” WM, which operates more than 250 landfills, is in the second year of a four-year plan to spend $1.2 billion adding 20 trash-gas plants as well as $1 billion expanding and automating its recycling business. The Houston company expects new and upgraded facilities to increase its recovery of reusable materials 25% by 2025. Having machines do the dirty work also cuts labor costs, executives say. Advertisement - Scroll to Continue WM expects enhancements to its recycling facilities to increase its recovery of reusable materials. Photo: Waste Management A lot of hard-to-fill jobs will be replaced by optical sorters, which use infrared cameras to spot valuable materials in the jumble and blow the desirable bits into separate bins with pinpoint puffs of air, Hemmer said. “In the past we might have had mixed-paper bales that had cardboard embedded in them,” she said. “Now we’re able to pull more of that cardboard out, it goes in the cardboard bale, and the price point on cardboard is much higher than mixed paper.” WM says the blended commodity value from its automated material recovery facilities is about 15% higher per ton. Not only do the machines amass more of the valuable stuff, the company says the material emerges cleaner and can fetch more than messy bales. Advertisement - Scroll to Continue The recycling investments will add $240 million to its bottom line over the next four years, WM says. It has higher expectations for its gas business. WM says it will boost landfill-gas output eightfold and generate more than $500 million in additional earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization through 2026. That profit forecast assumes two prices associated with every million British thermal units of gas. WM is counting on the actual fuel selling for $2.50, which is lately about the price of gas from geologic wells. Another $23.50 is anticipated from renewable-fuel credits, which is in line with recent trading, according to energy-information firm Platts. The outlook doesn’t count the $250 million or more of tax credits WM expects for building new gas plants. Last year’s climate bill sweetened the economics of trash gas. A federal proposal to offer additional credits for biogas projects that produce power for electric vehicles could make the incentives even stronger. Waste-company executives and analysts say that many are worth building anyway and that the incentives make it economical to install gasworks at smaller, less-gassy landfills. “Landfill gas is essentially the only scalable biofuel that doesn’t have a food-for-fuel trade-off,” said Goldman Sachs analyst Jerry Revich. “These projects don’t need any subsidies, but they will take the free money.” Write to Ryan Dezember at [email protected] and Will Feuer at [email protected] Advertisement - Scroll to Continue submitted by Kittym0nkey to PureCycle [link] [comments] |
2023.06.01 10:14 Low_Literature_1885 Please help - a van crashed into our home!
England - A van crashed into our home 4.30am Tuesday, chasing someone on a bike who had stolen tools. The bike was clipped and the van went through our front door metres away from our bed. The driver immediately reversed out (causing further damage and potential collapse) and attempted to grab the detached bumper.
New 20mph signs have been painted on the road, however the force of the crash has split bricks and created severe cracks across the entire property. The van went through the garden wall, the front doohallway and produced cracks in the internal bedroom wall. It ripped the electric metre out of the floor and the gas also cut out but luckily the gas pipe stayed intact.
After days of assessment on the property, during which we were out on the street as the property was deemed structurally unsafe, it has been decided that the property is not able to be lived in for a few months.
We currently rent this property, and have met with our landlord/insurance company. The insurance can cover another property at a like-for-like price. For 4 years we have paid £435 p/m, which is unreflective of the current rental market. Insurance claims we can either continue to pay £435pm to our landlord and they will house us in a hotel room with no kitchen and poor wifi (I wfh and need high speed internet, this would increase our food bills dramatically), or we can stop paying our landlord for the duration and pay rent at the new property, meaning our rent doubles each month, plus paying for new deposits, estate agent fees, removal vans, potentially storage space, etc.
As this incident was not our fault, it seems ridiculous that all of this botheextra cost is on us, and I'm confident that as the driver of the van was solely responsible (driving recklessly) surely he is accountable for the upheaval of our lives/subsequent costs?
My partner's lung collapsed 2 weeks ago and he is supposed to be recovering at home with no stress/exercise - as you can imagine this is not what has happened. I'm worried how this is affecting his health, we really need some advice/answers. Thank you

2023.06.01 10:01 TightAsF_ck Octopus Energy Opens Up 50k Spots on the Tracker Tariff Today Visual Comparison of Octopus Energy Tracker Tariff and Flexible Octopus (Government Cap Tariff)
Today, the Octopus Energy Tracker tariff opens up to 50k people as part of Octopus' ongoing beta programme.
The tracker tariff
currently allows people to save ~50% on the cost of gas and electricity. This is a special tariff that tracks wholesale energy prices each day. Yes - the rate changes every day. The tracker rates are currently cheaper than the government cap. However, on this tariff rates could go up. And they could go up above the government cap.
I switched to this tariff to benefit from the cheaper rates back in January. But have always been worried about the possibility of rates going above and beyond the government cap. If this happens, people on the tracker tariff may wish to jump back to the government cap.
Elsewhere on Reddit, we made a visual dashboard that updates each day with the latest prices to keep an eye on Tracker prices and compare the cost to the standard government tracker tarrif (Flexible Octopus).
The idea was to alert us to the day that a switch back might be needed!
It was posted here on UKPF too.
However, the first iteration of this relied on Google Sheets and Google Looker, and occasionally lost access to the data. A more reliable version of the tracker comparison can now be found here:
https://scrimpr.co.uk/save-money/octopus-energy-tracke It shows:
- The current cost of gas/electricity on the tracker and flexible tariffs (you can change this to your region, and OfGem "low", "medium", and "high" energy usage.
- Current savings that can be made on the tracker.
- 3 months of gas/electricity unit rates.
Hopefully people will still find it useful.

2023.06.01 09:56 Sufficient-Swim-7879 How would you solve inflation in the UK?
It is not as high as other countries, for sure, but still stubbornly high. Interest rates are set to rise again.
Here is my take on what the great british public think, from various pundits on early morning tv shows and LBC.
Some say don’t give in to the unions and raise pay as that will bake in inflation. Some say that has no impact and wages should rise in line with inflation.
Some say introduce price controls on big business as they have record profits and can afford it.
Some say raise the top rate of tax to 50% to fund public sector workers and stimulate the economy and tax the big oil and gas until they can take no more.
Some say take the Liz and Kwasi scorched earth approach and cut tax to grow the economy.
So, if you were invited on the Jeremy Vine show or Iain Dale on LBC, what would you be advocating for?
One thing I wonder, why can’t the UK do stimulus like the US does without causing further inflation?

2023.06.01 09:05 Bracks3 Mid-season player review
So, we're going into a bye weekend after a pretty tumultuous 11 rounds, so it feels like a good time to take a breath and do a mini review of the players. I'm only going to rate the players who have played at AFL level this season as I haven't watched enough VFL this season. Let me know what you agree/disagree with and your own thoughts.
Chad Warner (8.5/10)
He's been one of our better performers in the majority of our wins, but is still searching for that next level of consistency to become a Brownlow medal contender as he went missing in a few losses this year. Hard to believe he's only played 50 games with the amount of heavy lifting the Swans need him to do each week now.
Hayden McLean (6.5/10)
Hasn't quite made the next step yet, but in the absence of other tall forward options and the decline of Buddy, he has been a contributor each week. Would like to see him clunk a few more marks in F50 to make him a more dangerous player and ease the pressure on others. A better goalkicker accuracy-wise than most in 2023.
Dylan Stephens (3/10)
Unfortunately Dyl's season so far may best be described as a disaster. He's been dropped twice based on performance in a side struggling with injury. When he's played at AFL level he's consistently below par in basically every statistic other than gut-running. It's a worrying sign considering the draft pick Stephens cost - that 2019 draft is quickly becoming a damaging one to the Swans list (Ch.Warner is the only positive right now). Stephens dominates at VFL level, and if he can find a way to produce even 80% of that in the seniors he would be a great asset.
Ryan Clarke (5/10)
Performed some great clamp jobs last season to resurrect his career, but hasn't enjoyed the same success in 2023 since returning from injury. Clarke is a bit of a butcher with the ball and isn't the man you want making the last pass into the F50, so he really needs to step up his tagging if he wants to hold a spot in the side, or Horse needs to use him in a different position.
Isaac Heeney (7.5/10)
There's been a lot of criticism of Heeney that I think is a bit unwarranted, but it comes with the territory as a recent AA and one of the highest paid Swans. Isaac can certainly never be accused of a lack of effort and his contested work has been brilliant all season. He is one of the best tacklers in the comp to go with his marking, the real knocker on his game simply comes down to execution in front of goals and finding a way to get his hands on the ball when the Swans are struggling, but some of that comes down the coaches as well.
Logan McDonald (8/10)
Big improver early this season and was getting better every week before his injury. 2 goals a game is great for a developing key forward. Really looking forward to seeing this guy play over the next decade, just hope it's all in red and white and he stays healthy.
Harry Cunningham (6/10)
A hard one to rate. He's played every game but was invisible in many of them whilst playing further up the ground and struggling to have an impact. I've liked his game a lot better in the shutdown defensive roles that have contributed to the R10 and R11 wins. Still not sure he's best 22 in a premiership winning side, but we don't exactly have a lot of defensive experience/depth without him.
James Rowbottom (4/10)
I'll start by saying that I'm a huge fan of this kid. But it's not been a great year for Rowy. He continues to do some things well (tackling, defensive pressure), but can't get his hands on the ball enough for an inside mid and has been a turnover merchant as of late. He had 13 tackles vs. Port in probably his best game, but 9 clangers against Carlton on the weekend, which is top 5 all time for the Swans and several led directly to goals. It could also be argued that a lot of his tackles simply come from getting to every contest second. He needs time in the twos, but with Mills injured, Parker unavailable and injuries/form issues with other replacements, I can't see Horse giving him a spell.
Will Hayward (7/10)
Struggled to make a regular impact and goalkicking has been a bit off, but Will has been an important link man from defence to attack, and with a more coherent defence he'd probably get more of the ball on the rebound which is where he excels. His last two games have probably been his best, so his season is at least trending in the right direction.
Aaron Francis (7.5/10)
Wasn't too sure about the acquisition of this guy, and was even less sure when he played up forward initially, but since he has played down back he's done more than could really be expected of him. He had a good game against Freo and has been solid without being remarkable in the last two weeks. Was also good against GWS with 13 one-percenters which shows he has the potential to do more than just be an interceptor.
Tom Papley (6.5/10)
Honestly a little disappointed with Paps so far. A very good player when on-song, but he's had some poor performances and looked very shaky in front of goals. Had the best performance of any Swan this year against Richmond (6 goals, 25 disposals), but had a negative impact in some of the losses with a lack of awareness and some poor skill execution. Paps is a gun, so I'm sure he'll figure out how to get back to his best and there have been signs recently that he's back on track.
Oliver Florent (5.5/10)
Getting a bit of the ball, but has been exposed defensively repeatedly this season. He's also had some poor moments with ball in hand kicking into the centre of the ground for turnovers, and needs to remove the hospital handball from his game. He's basically stagnated into being a very average middle-of-the-road AFL level footballer, rarely in the best or worst on lists for a round. This might be his ceiling, but the one thing he can continue to do is try to improve his defensive positioning which is poor.
Callum Mills (6/10)
Had a OK start to the season, but a bit down on his elite 2022 form, then got deployed to try and fix our defensive issues with disastrous results. Not his fault obviously and it showed how much he is needed in the midfield. Was good against Collingwood, but then got injured which has again exposed our midfield contested ball issues even further.
Sam Wicks (7/10)
One game since return from injury and it was very good. Just what the Swans needed. Will await a larger sample size as he had a poor 2022, but if he can maintain this he's a lock for best 22.
Braeden Campbell (6/10)
I want to see more from Braeden. He's been moved around a lot this season as the coaching staff try to best figure out the best way to utilise him. Obviously an elite kick, and seemed to be doing some good things in the back half and kicking some beautiful long range goals. I'd like to see him take over Florent's HFB position as I think he can complement the run of Blakey/Fox with some good kicking skills that Florent lacks, and is a better defender. He's been basically invisible for the last 5 rounds.
Will Gould (2/10)
Oh dear this one isn't pretty. The best thing I can say is that he finally made it to AFL level. Unfortunately he got exposed to some good forwards and hasn't looked up to it. Was OK against Freo at times but still got outclassed in that game by some young forwards who should be at an earlier stage of development, which is not a good sign. Not sure where to next for Will, if the swans fix up their injuries worries he'll be a long way off adding to his games tally.
Peter Ladhams (7/10)
Braindead at times, but a solid contributor when he's played. Injuries to himself and Hickey haven't been ideal because he looks like he could best contribute as a Ruck/Forward if they ever get to play together. Lost his ruck battles most weeks, but gets clearances and helps the midfield.
Errol Gulden (10/10)
Couldn't ask for any more from this guy. Been the Swans best in 2023 so far despite taking on more and more of the load.
Nick Blakey (9.5/10)
Everyone was raving about his game against Carlton, but I think he's actually been very good all season so it wasn't at all surprising. It's even more impressive when you consider that he's had to play as a key back at times, a third tall in other games and a rebounding defender when we have the luxury, often all within minutes of each other. For me, the second best Swan in 2023 so far.
Lance Franklin (2/10)
He's played one year too many. With the amount of holes currently in his game the Swans need him to be super accurate in front of goals (like the back half of 2022), but unfortunately his goalkicking has been poor also.
Dane Rampe (6/10)
Looked to be in good touch before his injury. Swans are missing his experience and leadership more than we perhaps thought we would. Needs to play 10 games in the back half of the year for the Swans to have any hope at a late finals charge.
Luke Parker (8.5/10)
Dependable as always. That suspension is really disappointing as without Mills, Parker is perhaps our most important player to drive our stoppage work. Has a purple patch round 5-8 where he had a claim to being the Swans best each week and has been a contributor every other week.
Justin McInerney (4.5/10)
Perhaps a harsh rating, but I think he's regressed massively from late 2021/early 2022. Pretty good against Carlton and Collingwood, but honestly those are the only 2 games from 11 that have been up to the standard the Swans need from him. Needs to improving his kicking and spacing as he seems to get caught in a position where teammates can't use him frequently. Hopefully the Carlton game gives him the confidence to bounce back in the back half of the season.
Angus Sheldrick (5/10)
Played out of position in his 2 appearances and hasn't really been given a chance to shine yet in the seniors. My rating could change very quickly if he gets the chance as he clearly has ability given his VFL form.
Tom McCartin (7/10)
Injury has curtailed what could have been a big season for Tom. His absences have really hurt the Swans.
Tom Hickey (6/10)
Tough to get form back after an injury in your 30s, but he's clearly a better tap ruckman than Ladhams. Carlton game was better than his first game back, so trending upwards.
Marc Sheather (4/10)
I liked what I saw from Sheather, but it's early days for him, and with the current injury he may not get another chance in 2023.
Matt Roberts (3/10)
Certainly has potential, but like Sheather, injury has slowed down the early progress in his career.
Joel Amartey (7/10)
He's worked out how to get more of the ball and is a very useful Forward/Ruck option now. His injury came just as he seemed set to explode. Hoping that he returns in 2023 and can build on that start.
Corey Warner (4/10)
Didn't get to do a lot in his first few senior appearances. Plenty of upside, but needs time in the twos to develop his game.
Paddy McCartin (NA/10)
I'm not going to give a rating on Paddy. Just really hoping he's OK, football is secondary to getting himself healthy.
Robbie Fox (8/10)
I love this guy. Does a lot of good things, and while he does make the occasional clanger, he is surprisingly effective as a rebounding defender on top of being one of the best 1-on-1 defenders at the club.
Lewis Melican (6/10)
I thought that the Pelican's career at the Swans was over. Not his biggest fan, but he came in and did a job in his first game for 2023. Like Wicks I'll need to see a greater body of work to be convinced by him, but he was an immediate upgrade on Gould (which may be more of an indictment on Gould sadly).
Jake Lloyd (7/10)
Continues to do his job week in, week out. He'll always have the same holes in his game, but as long as he continues to do the things he's in the team for well, he has a spot on the HBF locked in to quarterback the side.
Lachlan McAndrew (6/10)
Didn't expect to see him in 2023, but did as well as you could really expect. Still got a lot of development to do to become a starter, but there are some good signs and hopefully he learns a lot from this early taste.

2023.06.01 08:55 ChemAnalystdata First Quarter of 2023 in North America Sodium Bromide Prices
In the North American market, the
Sodium Bromide Prices observed a mixed pricing trend in the first quarter of 2023. The market sentiments for the product were in positive territory in the first month of Q1 2023 amid increased production rates and a surge in demand from the downstream oil and gas drilling industry. In the next two months of Q1, the market prices of Sodium Bromide plummeted owing to weaker demand in the downstream oil and gas drilling industry and suppressed inquiries from domestic as well as international market participants. Amid looming inflationary pressure, uncertainties regarding the economy and the collapse of two banks in the US resulted in a weaker consumer demand outlook.

2023.06.01 08:34 AdLogical2086 Los Angeles May Implement New York-style Congestion Pricing Toll
https://archive.ph/3uitu From the Los Angeles Times
Merging onto the Santa Monica Freeway at rush hour or along the infamously choked Sepulveda Pass could carry a price for Angelenos — and a promise. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority is expected by the summer to release a long-awaited study that will offer a blueprint for a congestion pricing scheme similar to ones in cities such as London, Stockholm and Singapore, where commuters pay to drive in city centers. The transit agency has zeroed in on three locations for a possible test program: a nearly 16-mile stretch of the 10 Freeway between downtown and Santa Monica, arterial streets and freeways around downtown and the canyon streets and freeways that connect the San Fernando Valley to the L.A. Basin. Details of the plan — including pricing, the technology and projected revenue — are still being ironed out. But Mark Vallianatos, who is overseeing the feasibility study at Metro, expects the agency will make its findings public in the coming months, with a vote by the board early next year. The pilot project will include subsidies for low-income drivers and carpoolers and funding that would create alternatives to driving solo. Years in the works, the plan promises cleaner air, smoother rides and more funds to the agency’s coffers in the future. Studies show it could reduce harmful air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions by pushing more commuters to use public transit, while making roads less hellish for those who pay to use them. “It’s really about making it easier for those who drive to get where they need to go faster, more reliably,” Vallianatos said. The pilot program is part of a larger push among major cities to rethink how to deal with traffic that eats up commuters’ lives and pollutes communities as vehicles creep along. California has been quietly setting the stage for road pricing for years. Caltrans recently hired someone to oversee roadway pricing on its routes. And the Biden administration has set aside millions to fund a pilot program that charges drivers by the mile. The Federal Highway Administration is preparing to seek nominations for an advisory committee that will help establish the parameters for pilot programs. Still, it will be a difficult sell for drivers accustomed to free roads and for the politicians who represent them. Proposals to cordon off certain parts of the region to paying drivers or charging people for miles driven have provoked political backlashes elsewhere. Earlier this month, the Federal Highway Administration gave tentative approval to New York’s first-in-the-nation congestion road pricing plan, intended to fill financial gaps. Transit officials there say the technology to run a program could be up by next year, but opponents have threatened to thwart efforts. In San Diego, a plan to charge users per mile traveled was killed amid political opposition. And in the Bay Area, transit planners iced a downtown congestion plan after the pandemic emptied out the city center, although another study to charge for using major Bay Area freeways is underway. But perhaps nowhere in the United States would it be as consequential as in car-centric Los Angeles, the land of the SigAlert and the birthplace of the freeway, where commute times, traffic collisions and gas prices play large in the daily consciousness. The region sprawled, but no matter how much roadway it built, the snarl of traffic caught up with it at every turn. In Los Angeles, people spend an average of 95 hours a year stuck in traffic, according to Inrix, a transportation analytics firm. That’s not as bad as some more urbanized cities such as Chicago, where people lose 155 hours a year, but the slog is still acutely felt. Along the 5 Freeway southeast of downtown — ranked the second most congested corridor in the nation, commuters regularly traveling it lose 127 hours — or more than five days of their life — every year in traffic. On the 405 Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass, drivers motor along at 16 mph during the evening rush hour, an even slower pace than before the pandemic. On an average day, more than a quarter of a million motorists drive through the Sepulveda Pass, according to data from the California Department of Transportation.

2023.06.01 08:31 redflower5 Some non-tippers really make me mad.
At times I’m a proponent of having empathy and compassion for certain types of non-tippers. Like for grocery delivery for example, there are some people (elderly/disabled/low income/single moms, etc.) who badly need the service but simply can’t afford to tip on top of the exorbitant fees. Everyone needs groceries—but not everyone is able to go to the store.
For DoorDash though? I have a lot less patience. THIS is a luxury service.
I delivered to this 20 something woman earlier today. It was about a 16 minute trip each way (32 minutes total). Fancy coffee drinks, and she appeared outdoors with her dog to meet me. I was super friendly, thanked her and wished her a good day, etc.
Come to find out just now she didn’t tip.
What is wrong with some people? We’re working our asses off to maintain our cars, pay for gas, spending our valuable time doing a job that they don’t want to do themselves. And With these expensive orders they can’t even cough up a minimum of 3-4 dollars for the one person in their supply chain who stands to lose the most resources? With the price of gas around here (CA) I probably lost money on that delivery. People are so entitled and cheap.
I can’t afford to tip either. I can’t even afford to eat out. I can barely afford to keep my car running to do my job. For DoorDash specifically, I say if you can’t afford to tip, you can’t afford the service. Period.

2023.06.01 08:16 throwawayr452 WIBTA if I wanted to go to public high school?
WIBTA if I wanted to go to public high school?
Here's the deal. I'm(M14) homeschooled, have been my whole life. Here's the kicker - I'm gay. I have been for a while, but realized it more so recently. My parents, however, are majorly and openly homophobic. I know for a fact that if I came out to them, worst case scenario, I'm kicked out. Best case? No privleges(dunno how to spell that T-T), no friends, and definitely therapy.
I have these friends on my football team(let's call them Ben and Jerry) who have been extremely supportive(Ben is gay too). I've known them for since third grade, and I consider them my best friends. They're the people I feel safe around. I love them more than myself, and feel happiest around them. And they are going to public high school. If I didn't go to public school, I would still see them at club football. But even so, I want to be around them more.
You're probably thinking, "why wouldn't you go to public high school?" Well, I've been relatively against going to high school for a while, because of, well, people. I am also a pretty intelligent student(I am in 8th grade, incoming freshman, and am doing Algebra 2). If I went to public high school, I would probably have to do a lot of busy work, and deal with teachers and a completely different learning enviroment.
And here's the MAIN reason why I CANNOT go. My family is middle class. We are by no means poor, and are very fortunate. We also have three hundred dollars in the college savings accounts. For three kids. Therefore, I have to take running start junior and senior year to ease the price. However, if I took running start, I can't go to high school junior and senior year. This wouldn't be a big deal, but the high school I want to go to is not my district high school. If I took running start, I would be homeschooled again, and I would "transfer" back to homeschool, and end up back to my district high school for football.
HOWEVER. I cannot play sports after transfer from high school to high school. This would mean missing out on junior and senior year football. My mom has paid a lot of money over the years for my training. And I mean A LOT. She hopes that I can play college and get a scholarship, or at least play four years of high school for my college paperwork.
What I don't want to do is ruin my shot for college and a good future for some good middle school friends. UGH FML. But, I still want to go. SO. Reddit, would I be the asshole if I went to public school?
TL; DR (EVEN IF U DID READ, THIS MIGHT BE HELPFUL LMAO) If I went to public school with my friends, who unlike my homophobic parents support me, I would be throwing away my junior and senior year of football. My parents and I have spent lots of time and money towards football. I do not want to ruin my future career, college, and other opportunities for some good friends. But I still want to go. What should I do?

2023.06.01 07:25 NegativePast3826 I (18F) don't know what to do with my relationship with my best friend (18F) as we enter university. HELP!?
Hey everyone!
I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit for this but I wanted some advice on a situation with a friend.
So background context:
I (18F) am entering university this September, and am feeling pretty conflicted about my relationship with my best friend (18F) and I don't know how to handle it. Initially, I assumed she would be going to another university, so we could just drift apart and I could maintain a casual relationship with her. However, it appears to be that we'll be going to the same university, for the same program. This program only has about 200 students, so likely our classes will be the same, and so will our social circle. Currently, we're in a program with 60 students for high school and taking all the same courses and classes. Many of our clubs and ecs also overlap. So I basically am with her all day, everyday at the moment.
The issue: Before this friend, I used to be super social and had a lot of friends. Previously, I would hang out with a bunch of different groups, and if I ever felt like the conversation was boring or making me uncomfortable I would walk off from the conversation and wander to another group (essentially I was a floater). Typically, groups wouldn't be bothered by me walking off. Within the past few years, I have become more introverted. Thus, I'm more comfortable taking time away to be alone. However, while I now know being around people drains me and makes me feel tired, I do still enjoy it quite a lot. While I have become more introverted over the past few years. However, this friend is a lot more clingy. At the start of our friendship, when I would try to float off, she would trail me essentially, not letting me leave. Since she didn't really know most of the other friends on the same level, it made it difficult for me to go hang out with these other friends on my own (during the pandemic, so the only social interactions are for a half hour at lunch or the end of the day). I remember vividly once, I tried to walk off, and she latched onto the hook thing on my backpack so she wouldn't lose me in the crowd. I started to slowly feel trapped from this point forward. Even if I wanted to wander off just to be alone and go study, it became really difficult because she stuck so close to me. If I wanted to go to a club meeting, or anything, I more or less had to inform her. It feels like getting permission most of the time, and even then she tends to tag along. I understand that her intentions aren't bad, but I really just want to be left alone. I'm quite accustomed to my floating, and it gave me a sense of control.
Additionally, I had a massive fallout with my previous friend-group. It was a while back in 2017, however, it's taken me a long time to recover from that. Floating allowed me to maintain relationships without rushing into anything when I hadn't healed from my previous friend-group. I feel like her clinging on…I ended up in a friendship that I wasn't emotionally ready for, nor healed enough to handle.
Eventually, because she didn't want to hang out with other people - she's quite antisocial in nature - I would feel pressured to hang out with only her. Our high school cohort is about 60 students, so eventually people started to associate the two of us as a pair and would make remarks if I didn't hang out with her which furthered my isolation. Even when we do have moments with other groups, if she feels bored, or that they're wasting her time, I can almost feel the upsetness radiating off of her. I don't mind that they're wasting time and doing things slowly, it's a fun experience. Or at least it used to be…now all I feel is the wave of upsetness which keeps me from enjoying the whole thing. I feel like I have to leave because she wants to leave and that's the only way to appease her.
Additionally, she's very pessimistic/ cynical and egoistic. She often looks down on others and believes she is the best at everything. While I agree that she is very competent and capable, the way she expresses this makes me feel uncomfortable. She expresses it quite directly with me, however, I think other people can tell she feels that way based on the way she acts as well. As a result, people I used to be super close with have grown distant from me because it's clear she looks down on them. (Once again, I'm sure that other factors such as not talking to them as much as mentioned above contributes too, but her influence is on a level I can't control. This makes me spiral because I feel like I have no control over everything and I can't hold onto anything). I feel like I can't call her out because she'd refuse to accept it and I'd have to persuade her why she's wrong, rather than just having her accept it. I strugle to remember exact incidents unless I document it like this, and often just have the general idea of what's wrong.
Also comments like "You're being mean, or you've hurt their feelings" are often met with "So what? I don't care", the issue is I care. I don't like hurting people, and would rather try to fix things if I've made mistakes. I also don't like what that says about her. One day - such as the day I bring this up - if our friendship is over, will that be her response too? She won't try to be a good friend or good person, but will kinda go fuck all of it and hurt me without an ounce of remorse. I try to tell myself that different people have different perspectives, and I am not always right. However, no matter how hard I try, I just…I can't understand this at all, and it infuriates me.
Contrarily to her pessimism - as my mother is quite a pessimistic person - I have spent years working on maintaining my optimism, and trying really hard to be a good person. Obviously, she is not to blame for my mother's behavior. However, between the two of them, and because I'm around her all the time, I feel like I'm becoming more similar to her in this sense, and I hate myself for it. Of course, she's allowed to be cynical. I'm not saying being optimistic is always the right thing. There are many pitfalls, such as being naive, and getting hurt. Thus, I understand that being optimistic to the extent that I like to be, isn't for everyone. However, I hate how it's affecting me, and that it's around me all the time. I do appreciate our friendship, but I think this is one of our core differences that makes us incompatible
While I'm not soft-spoken, and will stand up for what I believe in, I try to avoid unnecessary conflict, and prefer to take a people-friendly approach. My friend is much more aggressive and often "rocks the boat" in group projects and friendships. This leaves me in a situation where I feel like I have to pick up the pieces to make amends because my own friendships are at risk. Additionally, even if I do agree with her point, I find it more difficult to solve problems (especially project wise) in the typical manner that I would. I can be more willing to find a compromise and handle it with less of a mess. It also makes me very, very anxious, and I hate it so much. We talked about it once and she said she knows it makes me anxious too, which makes it worse because she's still not willing to change, similar to the point about hurting others feelings. Another ex-bestfriend (18M) previously mentioned that it's technically not my responsibility, but I feel like people view her actions and feelings about things as similar to my own, which screws over my relationships.
Furthermore, she burned the bridge between her and the previously mentioned other best friend (18M), and tried to blame it on her not liking how he treated her. This also upset me, because I didn't ask for that. I also felt like because she had so much input on why my friendship with him was lacking, my pre-existing insecurities amplified. I realized wayy too late as to how unfair I had been. We had pre-existing expectations in our friendship for a number of years, and I suddenly went that's not enough. Our friendship was different and didn't tick every box, but that doesn't mean it was wrong? We both were happy, and that's what mattered. I realized at this point that I couldn't express that to her. Getting her to back off was difficult, and I started to feel scared of her to some extent. I was scared to talk to her (which surprised him, as it was atypical of me to be like this in any situation). Looking back, this was another clear red flag. Just the idea that I felt the need to shut myself down and not express myself is worrisome. (This male friend and I no longer speak for a number of reasons).
She's also known for crossing over boundaries, which caused one of my core friend groups to stop talking to her last year (and as a result of this and my ex-best friend (M18) being in this grp, I've also grown severely distant). While I can't blame the distance completely on her, I would have done my best to maintain one specific friend (F18) in the group if it hadn't been for other conflict she had with this friend. This event also caused me to realize how differently we often approach issues. She was quick to push the blame off herself. Typically, I tend to pull as much of the blame on myself as possible (also not healthy, I know M18 told me so), or if I do feel defensive. I try to apologize in the moment, sincerely. And I tend to reflect back often. I know that within the next few months, the heat of feeling accused will die down, and I'll be able to truly feel remorse from my actions and learn from them.
However, this crossing over of normal boundaries is also applicable to me. Often, we have to do what she wants if she's decided she wants to do something, regardless of what I want. While this is never directly stated, I always feel anxious to go against her and express that I'd like something else. Typically, I'm not like that with other people. The only way for me to disagree and say I'd like to do something else is to get on her level of pushy / aggressive, which I also find to be mean. I don't want to act like that. I also find it quite suffocating to express what I want because she's so pushy about what she wants.
This is further exacerbated by her parents. Her father in particular is very similarly pushy and has no regard for my boundaries. Last year when we went on a trip with both families to the Aquarium, they both made decisions about what we would be doing without me. My mom's quite sick and one of the activities (a visit to the beach) would cause her symptoms to appear. I tend to do most of the planning in our house and often have to be careful to take into account my family members' conditions in this sense. However, this impromptu decision to visit the beach got me in quite a bit of trouble with my parents, as they felt I wasn't being considerate of them. This made me feel really frustrated and trapped between everything. Additionally, my friend knows of my mom's condition. While I don't expect her to take that into account when making the decision, she should have informed me or had her dad inform my parents, and allowed for a conjoint decision. I also just didn't want to go to the beach - I was really tired at this point - but obviously (brown kid) I can't say that in front of her parents and argue.
Similar things happen for other decisions such as when we go out for other activities as well. Such as when we first became friends, often she and our other friend would want to go on walks outside (whereas I would much rather do anything else). I remember early on expressing that I didn't want to but they could go. Likely because my boundaries were ignored then and overstepped, I don't feel safe expressing that I don't want to do what she wants. And I know she won't take no for an answer through those experiences. So naturally, instead of going back and forth in an argument so I can not do what I don't like, I just am left to silently resign.
Additionally, we're both pre-med students, which creates a lot of competition. I do my best to find many extracurricular opportunities and scholarship opportunities (especially since I'm a first-generation student and my parents are unable to support me in ways that are not financial support due to various reasons). About a year after we first became friends - we've been friends for 3 years, since grade 10 - she and another girl who we were close with at the time, reached out to form a club behind my back. I know this probably sounds very foolish, but up till this point, I had shared the majority of extracurricular activities I had researched online. Additionally, I had founded a club a few months prior with both girls (we were all co-presidents), since they expressed interest after I had founded another club with another friend group. They had no intention to tell me that they were starting this new initiative. I had reached out to the organization to inquiry about stating a chapter for the three of us together and found out about it. It really bothered me and made me feel like I was being taken advantage of. When I expressed this at first, both girls shut down and got defensive. Neither was willing to admit they were wrong, and just tried to fight me. I am their friend? I was rightfully upset, shouldn't you at least apologize and show some remorse?
It should be noted that some months later, I expressed just how upset I was to the best that I could to both girls and we talked about it and came to an understanding. While the issue was resolved, I still think it's important context.
Now once again, this competition is further exacerbated by her dad once again. This year, I had compiled a database of scholarships. During a conversation, her dad had mentioned that we needed to be on top of things this year, such as scholarships. It had rubbed me the wrong way, so I had stood up for myself and mentioned we had a database of scholarships as a way to prove I was on top of things (I get told by my parents that I should work harder a lot, and it makes me upset because I'm really working my ass off). However, this prompted him at first to push my friend to show him this database and scholarship information. And as a result she became really pushy with me. Initially, I ignored her hoping it would go away. After all, I had saved her imo by telling him she was prepared which was a lie. She could have compiled something in the meantime to make up for it instead of bothering me about it so many times. She made me feel like I had to give it to her, that she was entitled to it. About a month in from this, he called me while I was at home, and spoke to me in...I don't even know how to describe it, but it was a pretty manipulative tone to get me to hand it over. I ended up handing over a couple of simpler ones I had (because I had spent hours researching those scholarships, and the information is also available to her on the internet, it just wasn't fair).
Plus, after the prior issue with the club, I assumed there wouldn't be anything like this. Exchanging homework was alright because it was quite evenly balanced, and often it was balanced our quite quickly due to the nature of school. However, this wasn't something she could pay me back for, and left me feeling used again. I know I was quite nice back then and helped people out a lot, but I hate being taken advantage of and treated like that. I also feel like it's just a shitty show of the other person's character.
I know that in this case, she knows her dad is in the wrong and tried to stand up for me at the start. I actually would probably just avoid him in a normal situation and not make a big deal of this.
However, I feel quite unhappy now, and as a commenter said, looking forwards 10 years I don't think the friendship in this state will be good for me. While I have thought of talking to her, as you can see above, either I have mentioned some of these things in some capacity and been dismissed, or the issue is who she is as a person. I sincerely believe that I have no right to dictate who she is as a person. But these core things disrupt my life and make things really difficult for me, so I'm not sure if I should keep putting up with them. I keep rationalizing to myself with "no one's perfect", "she's not completely at fault, I am top" and " I've also probably made mistakes and hurt her, I shouldn't make a fuss". However, as the commenter said if I'm unhappy then that's that. Forcing myself to continue feeling suffocated and unhappy because I feel guilty is just foolish.
Why am I still friends with her?
Well, while I am very isolated with no friends to hang out with, this connection feels more real? A lot of my old connections, I would wander around those groups, and no one would notice if I left. Sometimes, it made me feel really lonely like no one cared for me. They all felt like surface-level friendships. This often made it super easy to walk away when things got toxic (which I can't do right now), however, I often felt depressed and unfilled then. Whereas my friendship with her feels more genuine and deeper.
Additionally, we are quite similar in terms of SES and goals. It's quite easy to discuss familial issues with her when I need support, and from a financial standpoint, I don't feel pressured to spend with her either. Sometimes this can be stressful since she's more stingy than me, so I feel guilty for spending too (and therefore, going out with other friends and spending). We have also argued before on finances, and i sometimes can't understand why she's making such a big deal about things. I feel held back from spending as I please. However, unlike many other people; I never feel bad about saving. Using coupons, or points, or carefully checking multiple prices. We do that stuff together, so I don't feel bad doing it.
Our sisters have also really hit off, and it's a nice dynamic between the four of us and I don't know how they'll be affected or our families will react in general.
Being in a similar field means she understands not having the time to hang out (especially while we did IB). This expectation go hang-out more from my middle-school friends stressed me out a lot.
What I think is the best solution:
I'd love to remain friends and just have a crap ton of distance between us. The type of friendship where you see each other only on holidays (like once every 4 months?). That way we can quickly catch-up, and can be there for each other if needed, but I can go ahead and live my own life. Plus, I can find myself again and be the person I like.
I guess part of my worry with this is also clubs. We have many similar interests, and I want to join schools clubs without feeling tied down or running back into her. Often when I'm in environments with her around, I feel like I have to let her lead and I can't just be me and do me. I have to back off and step down or else she gets pushy. I tend to thrive more when I'm on my own without her whether that's working with a group or just leading in general. Even working with a group, while I've definitely gotten frustrated with them, we sort things out quite well because I'm handling situations with them my way. I want that back in every club in my life. But even now, pre-uni starting we've somehow managed to join the same pre-med club. And I feel like either we'll keep joining the same clubs or I have to back off and stop doing what I want to do cuz she's doing them to be able to unclip my wings and be free.
However, with us going to the same universities (in a city 2.5 hours from where we live now), I don't know how to get around all this. I also don't know how to tell her most of this without hurting her feelings. And even if I did, as I mentioned prior, the core of the issue is who she is as a person and how she carries herself. Just because I like being optimistic and nice doesn't mean I can force her to be that way. She's allowed to have her defense mechanisms, and we've discussed before how she believes her way of living is better than mine for her. (Her's being the pessimistic, and as she calls it "realistic" way, whereas mine is a lot more optimistic, sometimes naive, but imo it's simpler?). And no one has any right to say what is the right way to live for everyone? So that feels wrong...
I just want a casual relationship. I don't want to make an enemy out of her as I enter university because I have even less energy for that then the bs I'm dealing with rn. I just want us to be like friends, not best friends. And keep a lot of distance when we first go in. I feel like a huge part of the issue here is we passed the point in the friendship cycle where your supposed to drift off. Usually having that time away I feel like allows for a natural drift back in as you accidentally cross paths again. And I sorta want to just drift back now and naturally drift back to being friends later when / if it works out.
I guess the question is how do I explain all of this to her and reach a resolution without making an enemy out of her

2023.06.01 07:20 villianrules Danny Phantom Videogame Ideas part 3 rated T
- Different bosses and goons, maybe some new enemies i.e. Ghostly Mobsters, More Corrupt Business Leaders, The Vikings Outlaw Motorcycle Club, Mercenaries, Different Ghosts from other Countries and Cultures.
- Smart AI, don't make the enemies brain dead or have an ally empty a weapon into the player's back
- Have Sam patch Danny up after fights, maybe she's the medic and he has scars
- Have different opinions on Danny Phantom like the first Spider-Man film some loved him, others hated him. Dash discovers the secret and despises Danny, "Always knew that you were a freak".
- Maybe have Ember flirt with Danny
- Just have a few prominent enemies and don't just have villains because they were in the show
- Don't make it fit after Phantom Planet, make it more like the Arkham games or Spider-Man PS4 where you don't need to read or watch certain episodes or issues.
- Have Tucker working on Fenton tech, so it doesn't harm Danny or have him hack into cameras or find digital fingerprints of crimes
- Don't have micro-transactions, DLC when it's extras and adds to the videogame is great not "well to get pass this level pay $5.99"
- Have Valerie as a reoccurring enemy and Danny has to deal with her without harming her permanently
