I’ve Seen What lies Beyond the Gates in Blackwood Forest

2023.06.04 04:41 Aggressive_Future921 I’ve Seen What lies Beyond the Gates in Blackwood Forest

The Blackwood Forest has always been a source of legend in our town. Not for anything good, though. Everyone here fears it. They always remind newcomers to “Never go into Blackwood Forest.” Nobody who enters it ever comes back. At least, that was how things used to be.

One of the most famous incidents surrounding the forest occurred around 1989. A family of 6, the Franks, moved into a house not far from the forest. It had an expansive backyard, stretching up until the edge of the dense clusters of trees that make up the boundary of Blackwood Forest. One evening, they decided to eat dinner in their new backyard. They weren’t going into the forest, just the fire pit about halfway between their house and the trees. Another family of 3, the Andersons, joined them. At around 8:30, screaming was heard by nearby neighbors. The police were called. When they arrived, they found that the benches, tables, and chairs were soaked in blood. The grass was smeared with it in a path leading into the forest. There was no sign of either of the families. The police confirmed the blood of 9 individuals was present at the scene. Enough blood was lost to assume the deaths of all 9 individuals.

After that day, a massive fence was built around the forest, to keep us out, or keep other things in. The fence is 11 feet tall and designed to be impossible to climb over, with almost no footholds. A gate is kept locked tight, located at the end of a worn path leading out of the side of town. Nobody goes in, and nothing gets out. Not that anyone knows what took the Franks or Robinsons. Except, of course, for me. I’ve seen what lies beyond the gates of Blackwood Forest. I’ve seen the beasts that took those families, all those years ago.

The fence wasn’t really necessary to be perfectly honest. There aren’t really any trails to hike through the forest, and we don’t have many issues with kids doing stupid things like trying to sneak in for “fame.” Even if we did, the fence keeps them out. Therefore nobody has any reason to go into the forest. Everyone is too afraid.

But, although I listened to what everyone always said; “Never go into Blackwood Forest,” I was curious. My morning run took me past the fence and gate, and I would sometimes glance in to see what was in there. I thought it looked like a normal, albeit dark, forest. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was very off. There weren’t many animals, like birds or squirrels, and you couldn’t hear the ones that were there very well. It was oddly quiet. At night, no crickets would be heard. No fireflies during the summer. It was oddly devoid of animal life for a dense forest with so many places for a small critter to live or a bird to make a nest. However besides that, it really didn’t seem that dangerous.

A few weeks ago, my curiosity got the best of me. I decided to see if there were any openings that I could slip into. Sure enough, on the very far side of the fence, opposite the side with the town, I found a small gap I could squeeze into. I decided that the next morning, I would grab my phone and camera and explore some of the forest close to the fence. I was excited to see what lay within, and wondered about what sort of stuff I might find. After all, nobody ever went in there.

The next day came, and after eating breakfast, I jogged to the small opening I’d found the previous day. I had a backpack with some water and food, as well as the camera and phone. I pushed my backpack through first, and then squeezed through the opening.

The first thing I noticed upon entering was how dark it was. The trees blocked out much of the sunlight. It was hard to see very much. Thankfully, I could use both my phone’s flashlight and the one attached to my camera. As I walked, the quiet of the forest around me felt eerie. There should have been the sounds of animals beginning to wake up and start their day, but instead there was silence. Every sound I made, like stepping on a tree, quickly was dampened out, as if swallowed whole by the trees.

After a few minutes of walking and taking pictures, I came upon a worn path. I was confused, since there was no reason for any path to have been here because nobody had ever lived in the forest. I took another photo, and decided to follow the path. After another few minutes of walking, I noticed a clearing with sunlight pouring into it ahead. In the very center of it sat an old, decrepit stone building. Off to the side, there was an old well. The building had a very weathered but readable sign, identifying it as “Blackwood Church.” I took a photo of the church and well and decided to enter. I was very curious, as nobody should have ever lived out here, this deep into the woods. There was a church that had been built as part of the original town, so it didn’t make sense for this one to be there.

I walked through the place where the doors would have been, had they not rotted off of the hinges. I could see the space around me because of several holes in the roof allowing sunlight in. It seemed like it was once fairly normal, though weeds had sprouted up through the floorboards which were falling apart. I stepped outside after snapping some photographs. I was going to leave back along the path and get out of the forest. As I walked, I noticed that there seemed to be several old buildings, almost destroyed, spread out on the edges of the clearing. I began to see the old worn paths made of cobblestone and dirt, almost invisible, having been reclaimed by nature. This wasn’t just some church, this was an entire town.

I was both shocked and excited. I spent the next hour taking photographs of all of the somewhat intact buildings and their rubble counterparts. I spent around an hour exploring the town, exploring a butchers shop, clothes store, and general store. I finally made my way to the path I had come in on. I noticed, underneath all of the foliage, there seemed to be a sign. I brushed some of the growth away and read the faded words; “Welcome to Blackwood, Population: 349, c. 1903.”

At this point, on top of the confusion, there was a growing feeling of nervousness in my gut. I’d never heard of any town in Blackwood Forest. Our town, Greyrock Springs, was founded in 1909. I searched the other houses on the outskirts of this ghost town. In one of them, I found the journal of a 19 year old girl named Ellie. She had moved into the town with her family, the Wilsons, and another one they were close friends with, the Millers. They had moved in 1905. The first dozen pages were normal entries about life around the town, her friend, 19 year old Janie Miller, and her older brother, 21 year old Shaun Miller. She and Shaun were apparently set to get married in a year, something Ellie wrote almost endlessly about. The 20th entry, dated September 17, 1905, however, was different.

The 20th entry said that 7 townsfolk and gone missing suddenly overnight. It read, “Last night 7 of our neighbors vanished. The Smith family and Mr. H. The Sheriff doesn’t know what happened to them. Their beds appear to have been slept in, and their homes appear normal. But nobody has seen or heard of any of them since 8:00 last night. I’m getting worried, some of the other neighbors are talking about dark shadows in the trees snatching them away. I hope they’re alright.”

After reading this, my anxiety started growing. What could have happened to the people who lived here? I looked at the next entry, 6 days later. It read “Almost everyone has vanished. The night after the first disappearances, 14 people vanished. The numbers got worse from there. The Sheriff, the butcher, the schoolteacher, all gone. Last night, 34 people, including the Millers, vanished. There are only 115 of us now. Janie and Shaun are gone, their beds unkempt, everything else in place as if they just got up and walked out. It’s 7:52 at night according to my clock. There are things making weird screeches out there. I can see the shadows outside. They’re drawing closer. I think I’m going to join Janie and Shaun tonight. At least I won’t have to live on without my friend and love.”

Terror was beginning to take hold now. I looked around the room. I realized that it was now noon. I had been reading for so long I had lost track of time. I got up, grabbed the journal, and ran out of the house, the feeling of being watched nearly overwhelming me. I got to the path I had walked in on. It was then that the screeching and wailing began.

It started as an inhuman, deep, gravelly sound, and then cracked and sounded like a dying person giving a final cry for help. Soon, a chorus of these other-worldly howls filled the forest. Terror shot through my body. I felt chills. I turned and scanned my surroundings, searching for the source of the sounds.

That was when I saw one of Them for the first time.

I don’t know how to describe Them here, but I will do my best to give you an idea of what lurks in those woods.

They are tall, around 7 feet, with pure black skin. No light reflects off of any part of Them, except for their milky white eyes. Brown veins reach for the center of the eye, where the iris and pupil would have been. Instead, there was just more white. In some places, Their flesh clings to Their bones as though they have been vacuum-sealed. In others, the flesh is gone, and only bone remains. Their entire body has pulsating, grey veins spiderwebbing from place to place. And Their mouths stretch from one side of the head to the other, nearly to the hinges connecting the jaw to the skull. Their teeth are thin as a needle, and they have hundreds of them.

One of Them was standing close to me, looking at me. It let out a screech-wail and started to run towards me. I turned and bolted, running towards the church, hoping to escape through an window-opening. As I reached the church, I turned and glanced back, only to see It standing near the well, not moving. Instead, it was growling at me. As we stared each other down, more of Them began to appear. They formed a ring around the church. I was now trapped. Panic began to set in more deeply, as I looked through the window-openings, trying to look for a weakness in the circle I could use to escape, and there was one. Directly behind the church, there was a large opening in the ring of monsters surrounding me. Taking several deep breaths and becoming as calm as I could given the circumstances, I took my opportunity and ran. I jumped out the window and sprinting with more force than I have ever used in my life.

I made it to the trees, hearing their horrible screech-wails following uncomfortably close behind. I didn’t stop, running through the foliage like my life depended on it, which I could tell it did. Most of Them remained behind, but a few followed me deeper and deeper into the forest, not letting up. The trees and brush whipped at me, stinging and cutting my skin, but a continued, even going faster. I finally stopped when I couldn’t hear Them behind me anymore. By this point, it was closer to 2:00 P.M. I had run in the opposite direction I had entered Blackwood from. The adrenaline I had felt began to wear off, and I wanted to collapse from exhaustion, but I knew those things would keep looking for me until they found me.

I spent the rest of the day cautiously searching for the fence, but no matter how hard I looked, I couldn’t find it. By the time it got dark, I was exhausted. The adrenaline from the whole day had turned into a mix of emotions, namely fear and anxiety. I decided to hide in a tree, in the event They found me. As I sat there, looking, I began to hear that screeching wail and those deep growls and grunts. They were close. I held my breath as the first one approached. It looked around, peering through the forest, searching for me. I got the feeling it knew I was close.

It started to scan some bushes near the tree I was in, when It looked up suddenly. I fell from my spot in surprise, hitting the ground hard and with a grunt. It let out a wail, and started to approach me. I searched for something to use as a weapon, and found a sharp rock. I looked at the large veins covering It’s chest area. It seemed like the perfect target. It began to run, screeched and then lunged. I pulled the rock from behind my back and sliced with ferocity, cutting through the veins like paper. It screamed and shrieked, black ooze shooting out of the wound like a hose until it stopped. The creature let out a final wail before collapsing to the ground. I looked at it. I could hear a sickly breathing coming from the thing. Before it died, I heard a distorted but human voice mutter a weak “Thank.. you..” and then the breathing stopped. I was stunned. I didn’t have much time to think about it, because more wails could be heard approaching fast in the distance. I continued to run through the forest, more adrenaline pumping through my veins, fear at the back of my mind. I ran for a long time until I ended up back in that town. I hid in the church, underneath the floorboards. At some point, I fell asleep from exhaustion.

The next 6 days were awful. I spent most of them hiding, slowly running through my food and water I had packed. One morning, as I reached the last of my water, I realized I had to escape. Although They searched the forests for me, I thought I could slip past Them and make it to the fence. But after a few minutes of preparing, I heard those wails approaching from the distance yet again. I grabbed my backpack and stepped outside again. I looked, seeing the creatures from before step out from the trees. I prepared myself, and ran. All of them began to follow me, their screeches cutting through the quiet of the forest and reminding me of how close I was to death. I went down that same worn path, sprinting through the woods. One jumped out in front of me, forcing me to veer off the path and into the forest. I ran, nearly tripping and getting cut on the branches. That was when I saw it. Ahead of me, finally, lay the fence. I took off the backpack as I approached. There was the gap. I was about to escape. They were close now, just a few yards away. I forced the backpack through the opening, forcing myself through it just as they reached the fence.

I turned to look back at them, snapping one final photograph. I’m not entirely sure why I did that, but maybe I just wanted proof of the truth. That I wasn’t crazy. What I saw was real. I grabbed the backpack and ran back towards town, towards safety, towards home, their growls and wails fading behind me.

I want to say that I’m safe now, that everything is ok, but it isn’t. A week ago, I started to hear whispers from my neighbors of wails, screeches, and growls coming from the fence. If anyone looked in the direction the sound was coming from, it stopped. I had to walk past the fence a few days ago, and I heard it. I was all alone. The fence started to rattle as well. I turned to look, but only saw a tall shadow slipping into the darkness of the trees.

Last night, two people who were walking past the fence vanished.

That brings us to today.

I know what They want. They are angry. I wasn’t supposed to escape. I don’t want to do this, but I won’t endanger anyone else who lives here.

I’ll leave the photos, camera, and journal in my desk for safe keeping. That way people will understand what I saw, at least partially. People will hear the story of the townspeople of Blackwood. That is the reason I’m posting this. So more of you know.

I have accepted my fate. After I post this, I will walk to the gate, and I will be taken. I don’t know for sure, but I think I will become one of Them, cursed to walk Blackwood Forest forever. My consciousness will be left a fragment, my humanity gone, as I walk the forest and wail, screech, and growl. This is the end for me. If anyone cares, my name is Daniel. I am 29 years old. I live in Greyrock Springs. If you come here, to find me or Blackwood or those things, or maybe even the pictures and journal, remember one thing.

Never go into Blackwood Forest.

2023.06.04 04:11 GoodDog_168 My pre-boulder preparation checklist

Hey guys, I just thought I would share the routine I go through before every boulder problem. I’ve been using this for a few months now and it really helps me make sure I have all of the factors in my favor for tougher problems like a V2. Here it is:
  1. Brush the holds. I use a custom-built 4 piece brush set to achieve optimal results. I use the brushes in this order:
-First, my Boar’s hair wide brush 3a bristle stiffness rating. This is the best one to start with. A medium strength bristle with wide brush surface gets the top layers of dust and chalk off the holds
-next, a thin-bodied brush with level 4c stiffness synthetic bristles. The thin body and stiff bristles help to really scrub away the more persistent debris and break up caked chalk and grime
-third, a small, steel wire-bristled precision brush (6a stiffness) is great for breaking up the toughest bits of grime which can throw off an entire send.
-finally, I clean each hold with a large, soft, horse hair and wool composite brush (1a stiffness) this wipes away the loose particles of chalk stirred up by the other brushes and removes moisture from sweat and humidity
  1. Now that the holds are clean I take about 10 minutes to think about how I am going to attempt the problem. I first mime out the movements with my hands, and then climb to various points on the problem to practice harder moves and get a feel for any tough holds. I also use this time to practice proper falling technique
  2. Now I do some final checks on my shoes, making sure that the sides haven’t stretched or shrunk messing up the fitting of my shoes, which could seriously impact my performance.
  3. At this point I lay out my crash pad below the wall, since I don’t trust the gym to properly maintain their pads, and replace them monthly as they should be.
  4. Next I clear the area below the wall, making it explicitly clear to all the birthday party gumbies with rental shoes and overconfident show off wannabe-honnolds to stay out of my area as that could impact my concentration and cause me to fall on them.
  5. As part of my final preparations, I select a beanie from my collection. This is very important for my mental state to get the right beanie. Oftentimes I will change beanies multiple times between attempts until I get the right one for the problem.
  6. Now is the point where I put in my airpod pros which I got from my gym’s lost and found and turn on my warm up music, weezer’s blue album.
  7. With my warmup music on I spend about 15 minutes stretching and doing cardio warm-ups to get the blood flowing. I also warm up my grip by using custom grip strength exercise balls.
  8. Next, it’s very important to go through the brushing process once more as particulate dust and chalk in the air can settle on the holds during the other steps.
  9. Now it’s time to ready my hands and chalk up. first I moisturize my hands a few times with different lotions (cerave sensitive skin lotion, working hands lotion, and aloe-infused Brazilian coco shea butter climbing lotion with hyaluronic acid). Then I spit on my hands to lay a good base layer for the chalk. Then, I apply a thick layer of liquid chalk, followed by several pieces of loose chalk, and a final dusting with a chalk sock.
  10. Finally, I switch my music to the free solo soundtrack and step up to the wall to send the problem.
Hope this helps you guys improve your bouldering skills. If you have any questions or ideas for additions to my routine feel free to comment!

2023.06.04 03:30 TangentalBounce How can we claim that (ritual) cleanliness still apply when part of that law […]lepers[…] A reply

We would fundamentally misunderstand the nature of Yeshua if we said He became unclean with the lepers. I cannot say He never did, for then He would cease to be human (there's still the matter of defecation), but with at least one example of uncleanness there's something to ponder. Yeshua being fully G-d, fully man had times where the fully G-d part was expressed to the extent that our human minds should be blown. I'll come at this subject from a round-about then direct approach. Since Yeshua was not a kabalistic 'wizard' having mastered a piece of paper with the divine Name on it as some have ridiculously charged, He was able to use His own power to tell Nathaniel that before coming to meet Him, he was observed by Yeshua, and knew him to be "a true son if Israel indeed in whom there is no guile" (paraphrased). Additionally, Yeshua told Kefa upon questioning who should properly pay a tax, those forcibly put to tribute, or those who were free? Yeshua told him to get the one fish in the sea that had a gold coin which could pay the tax for them both. Now Yonah also was in the belly of a big fish, but no one was prophesying where that fish should be caught and then selling him for taxes. ;) Now, when Yeshua was asleep in the boat and His talmidim woke Him, they were fearful and asked how He could sleep, He rebuked the wind and the waves. Do we not read that at the very least, a psalmist considered the wind (and perhaps the waves) messengers of G-d? So by an easy extrapolation, Yeshua commanded right then the malachim. He walked on/above the mayim chayim and caused Kefa (the rock/the stone) to do the same! The Stone who the builders rejected was not only the cornerstone that is the chief of turning the Poretz for breaking through, He is the Leper King, He is the mystery of the Garden who without the Ruach, if you enter from any other gate... you will go mad or perish He is the Aleph and Tav He is the vessel through which HaShem reduced Himself, the immaterial becoming material And when the woman with an issue of blood came trembling but to touch the kanaph, there was healing in His wings. He was not made unclean, yet the goodness and purity within Him surged from Him, lept on the devourer and took no hostage. He truly led captivity captive! Please, never forget Who you are dealing with.
Yochanan 3:14 and following
But Yochanan tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be immersed by You, and do You come to me?” 15 “Let it be so now,” Yeshua replied. “It is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness in this way.” Then Yochanan permitted Him. 16 As soon as Yeshua was immersed, He went up out of the water. Suddenly the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him
The Living Water defiled? No, I think not. But regardless, He who knew no sin, for us became sin
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not his mouth: He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare His generation? for He was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was He stricken. Yeshayahu 53:5-8
Lest we ever think that the one who could be termed the Leper King or prince Elisha indeed caused Naaman the Syrian general to be healed of leprosy, but he himself never even saw Naaman for which Naaman felt insulted. It is a known opinion that since the time of Miriam, no leper of Israel has ever been healed, and it would be a sign of Mashiach were it to happen. Likewise, He who is born blind to receive sight! The reason is, these are creative miracles. Elisha was on another level, drawing an axe-head to the surface of water, but Yeshua created the circuitry for lack of a better word, the infrastructure for a person blind to receive sight. He took one ravaged by a disease like gangrene and restored flesh, sinews, fascia, bone, nerves, fingernails that were missing. The Creative power of the universe was unleashed on a ravaged body of outcasts, sons and daughters of Israel. The dry bones truly became enshrined with flesh. Don't you forget it.
1 Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty. 2 He wraps Himself in light as with a garment; He stretches out the heavens like a tent, 3 laying the beams of His chambers in the waters above, making the clouds His chariot, walking on the wings of the wind. 4 He makes the winds His messengers, flames of fire His servants. 5 He set the earth on its foundations, never to be moved. 6 You covered it with the deep like a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. 7 At Your rebuke the waters fled; at the sound of Your thunder they hurried away— 8 the mountains rose and the valleys sank to the place You assigned for them— 9 You set a boundary they cannot cross, that they may never again cover the earth. 10 He sends forth springs in the valleys; they flow between the mountains. 11 They give drink to every beast of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. 12 The birds of the air nest beside the springs; they sing among the branches. 13 He waters the mountains from His chambers; the earth is satisfied by the fruit of His works. 14 He makes the grass grow for the livestock and provides crops for man to cultivate, bringing forth food from the earth: 15 wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil that makes his face to shine, and bread that sustains his heart. 16 The trees of the LORD have their fill, the cedars of Lebanon that He planted, 17 where the birds build their nests; the stork makes her home in the cypresses. 18 The high mountains are for the wild goats, the cliffs a refuge for the rock badgers. 19 He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows when to set. 20 You bring darkness, and it becomes night, when all the beasts of the forest prowl. 21 The young lions roar for their prey and seek their food from God. 22 The sun rises, and they withdraw; they lie down in their dens. 23 Man goes forth to his work and to his labor until evening. 24 How many are Your works, O LORD! In wisdom You have made them all; the earth is full of Your creatures. 25 Here is the sea, vast and wide, teeming with creatures beyond number, living things both great and small. 26 There the ships pass, and Leviathan, which You formed to frolic there. 27 All creatures look to You to give them their food in due season. 28 When You give it to them, they gather it up; when You open Your hand, they are satisfied with good things. 29 When You hide Your face, they are terrified; when You take away their breath, they die and return to dust. 30 When You send Your Spirit, they are created, and You renew the face of the earth. 31 May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in His works. 32 He looks on the earth, and it trembles; He touches the mountains, and they smolder. 33 I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. 34 May my meditation be pleasing to Him, for I rejoice in the LORD. 35 May sinners vanish from the earth and the wicked be no more. Bless the LORD, O my soul. Hallelujah!

2023.06.04 03:22 TallSmartWaterBottle Shifted to a reality where Skyrim exists + A New Method + Unusual Moments Arriving Back

Hello fellow shifters!
I hope this success story motivates you all and helps bring about great success in your own future experiences. Feel free to read the things you want to read first, no need to read in order. This was the first time that I shifted to a reality and then had unusual experiences upon returning. At least unusual compared to the usual normal for me ranging from food tasting so much better to new habits that stayed with me after leaving my DR. I scripted that would be the case, but never before has it truly been. Keep reading for the method and some notable moments in my DR, and then those unusual moments that followed.

By the way, I've been taking a lot of time to edit this all together as I'm copy and pasting previous comments and posts and my notes because I followed a method but didn't put everything in one place. I'll likely make some edits to fix any confusion following the post.

First off, a new method for you guys that I used successfully for this shift:
Instead of falling asleep like some methods require, I "create" a pocket dimension that I can jump to once I'm done scripting and visualizing the scripts taking place in that reality. Here's the the method I followed for the success I experienced, in a way that you can read and follow it too.
1. Relax and center yourself by breathing deeply and visualizing your energy, your essence all of your energy.
2. Next, visualize you're outside your energy, but that you're not your energy, you're just watching it.
There's quite a few ways I've learned to do this, to separate your consciousness from your body ranging from seeing yourself outside your body; to visualizing you're outside this universe watching yourself in 3rd person on a screen and there being a lot of other screens which are other possible realities; to the technique in my post.
3. Visualize you're in a void of sorts, you're outside this universe in a place where all universes are visible.
4. Next, visualize an egg. And in that egg is another reality that you can script however you desire with intentions or visualizing what you script.
5. Visualize your DR is on a movie screen that you are editing and rewriting how it plays out with you scripts and visualizing them all taking place in that reality within the movie screen.
I visualized the script taking place in my desired reality instead of in the egg. Later I basically copied the reality in the movie screen to the egg. This step is optional, but it makes it easier to visualize personally and may help you too.
5. Script what would happen once you get back.
For me, I visualized a second movie screen and every time I visualized the script taking place, I saw the moment I left the DR and went "back" to my CR. However, technically the CR you return to should be a slightly different reality upon arrival, at the very least least in the sense that in the CR you arrive back, you brain contains vivid memories. For example, I scripted my habits and such were to change and match what they came to be in my DR.
6. Visualize the movie screen that held my DR now exists in the egg, visible in an egg shape. Visualize that it is literally a gateway to and from that reality.
7. Finish up your scripts, and visualize the scripts taking place in your desired reality, within the egg/movie (whichever is easier, but knowing they are both the exact same reality.)
For me it took 1-3 hours of scripting and visualizing, but afterwards, I visualized the shift from my CR to my DR, every second scripted to be 10 years.
8. Set the time constraint such as anything from no time here passing, to one second being any number of years.
The first few times I shifted to a Pocket Dimension, I scripted no time would pass but immediately I would have memories from the time in the DR. In this Skyrim DR, I scripted every 1 second that passed here, 10 years would pass there. Ten seconds came and went quickly, and memories flooded my mind of my time there. I've spent at least 5-10 hours the past few days remembering my 100 years there, and there's a vast amount I've yet to take the time to revisit. While remembering the time, it truly feels like remembering moments in my life from the past.
9. Visualize your consciousness entering your DR. There's no need to sleep or for your body to be asleep.
Upon taking enough time to visualize and script to the point you know it will work, and you've seen moments in your visualization of you in you DR, time will pass as you intend for it to and your memories should come flooding back, even if you have to take time to remember them.
10. Take the time to remember your moments in your DR.
It may feel like the creative side of your brain is just making stuff up at first, but the moments it may feel as if it's making up feel real and seem like true memories. That's because they are real, did exist in that reality, and are true memories.

I lived 100 years and those 10 seconds went by fast it seemed but I have vivid memories from the last 100 years while in this DR.
And so too can you do this too, and I hope by performing what I describe to you you have the same amount of success as myself.

Now to the experiences:
Most know the "Hey you, you're finally awake" scene of Skyrim, and I scripted everything would play out like normal Skyrim besides the other scripts listed in the comments below.
I scripted when I came back I'd take with me my DR's subconscious and consciousness 100% and I've noticed many unusual occurrences (unusual for me in this CR at least) upon arrival back here to this CR: - I had the strongest urge to brush my teeth with my electric toothbrush I've ever had - I enjoyed brushing my teeth so much as if I just hit a really good joint (I haven't smoked in almost 2 months tho so drugs aren't the cause). The euphoria was unreal - I seemingly manifested an opportunity to garden for my family even tho I've always hated gardening and they know that. I loved every moment of it and I was getting flashback type memories seeing myself working on my farm in Skyrim, vividly seeing my leather clothes and my surroundings while looking down at my regular jeans, gardening - I never have let myself garden in this CR to the point of sweating, I just hated it that much, but I was sweating beads down my face and on my lip and didn't go for a water break once like I used to do every few minutes before I would just go in the AC for a while - Before going to bed last night upon writing this, I had a memory of me doing 10 pushups every time before I'd sleep. I wasn't gonna do it because I was too tired, but I couldn't resist the memories just kept playing in my hand, and dropped down next to my bed and did 10 pushups, and that was the fastest I've fallen asleep in maybe over a year in this CR. I still remember how easily I'd fall asleep in Skyrim even though it's counterintuitive because you'd expect the blood pumping would keep me awake - The evening of coming back here, I sat outside for 1-3 hours enjoying the dusk and then the night. I NEVER sit outside for more than a few minutes, I've always hated the bugs and the heat outside. I'm sitting outside and have been for over an hour writing this 2 days later. Yesterday I spent a few hours just enjoying the night sky and the peacefulness outside. Each time I spend time outside past few days I remember and reminisce over the good times and the memories of sitting on my porch outside in Skyrim (I'm sweating and completely unusually for me, I don't mind one bit) - When I got back I showered and it was about just as euphoric as brushing my teeth was. I felt so much gratitude to have a fast stream of hot water and to not have to bathe under a waterfall or in a (heated) bath as I have many memories of doing both of, it was amazing and serene to wash myself with soap - I always use a scrubber when I shower in this CR but counterintuitively I used my hands for the first time in over a year. I don't know why, but it may have been to fully feel myself clean myself, not too sure about this one. Definitely scripting soap in next time, I used scents I made that were basically soap but I didn't have true soaps of any kind - also upon arrival back I went and walked on the grass barefoot in my backyard yard, which I never did because I hated the idea of bugs crawling on me. After sitting on a stump my bare feet on the grass, an ant crawled on my food and I didn't even kill it. I just brushed it off even though I always would kill them. It didn't even bother me one bit; I felt so at peace, calm, and still. - Unlike most of my memories, I can remember entire conversations for the most part in my DR even ones from 80+ years ago. But then there's still some things that are faded and I have to focus and try harder to remember if I can manage to. - I always bring a lot of stuff with me between my family's house and my place, at the very least a phone cord. But I packed lightly without thinking, bringing only my keys, wallet, phone, and earbuds. I later realized it was unusual for me and remembered what I learned in Skyrim, to pack lightly only the most important things. I always used to bring a cord at the least even though there's one over there, no clue why. - normal things feel nostalgic, like the taste of yogurt I used to eat every day and the smell of my house even - washing dishes is a piece of cake, it used to be something I put off or dreaded a bit, and now it's easy, I remember all the years I would wash dishes in the Inn before I bought it and in my houses - I'm realizing now that food tastes so much better as if I'm high on weed. At least processed foods like yogurt and granola bars so far, but it's very noticeable and it makes sense though. If you were to go 100 years without eating anything processed and you try it again and your body doesn't reject it, the amount of sugar and sweeteners and random other tasty junk is most likely going to taste a lot better than eating vegetables and meat and non pasteurized dairy for all those years. - I no longer feel the need I was unaware of before to have almost constant distraction. No matter what I used to be doing, I was either on a device or doing something like reading or working out. The only time I used to just think is in the shower or accidentally while meditating. I'm realizing that all changed since I came back. - The time I've been spending outside, at least 6 hours the past 2-3 days of writing this, most of it I'm not on my phone but instead just thinking, and I feel peace while thinking unlike normally. Even when not outside I've spent hours inside just thinking and looking back and remembering my lifetime in Skyrim - I've realized not everything needs a (long) response. However, unlike the times I've been more quiet in the past it's not because I don't have the energy to talk. For example, when my family was telling me what they needed done outside, my responses were either silence but eye contact and nodding or 1-3 word responses. I believe it's because previously I would fill the air with words because I was uncomfortable with silence - upon coming back I'm a lot more honest/blunt as in I don't feel a need to sugar coat my answer if I'm asked a question. - I have more confidence to share my experiences but I have a newfound skill of articulating them without sounding crazy (so far). For example, after debating on telling a member of my family (who didn't know about reality shifting and was skeptical) about shifting to another reality for 100 years, I warmed up to it. For the first part of it she was worried about me, understandably because she's a psychologist. Unexpectedly, she shared her own spiritual experiences, of which I didn't know she had any including her memories of a past life as a little boy and she's known how to sail her whole life because of those memories. She and I both agreed that shifting is closely related to other spiritual things like intuition and past lives in the sense that science can't explain them yet but they still exist. This was also after telling her that I spent 100 years in another reality, but I didn't get to the part where it was a reality where the events of Skyrim take place and exist. But I did tell her almost everything else including I had a wife and 2 kids. - In this CR, a girl I hadn't spoken to in years drove by as I was picking up some leftover branches from earlier's gardening outside the day before writing this. That was the first time in my life I talked to a woman smoothly without stuttering, got her phone number and her Instagram, and talked to her in my regular deeper voice instead of raising it higher pitch accidentally at all like I talk to my mom or when I'm really excited or when I'm flirting with a girl (in the past).
I told that member of my family, and she suggested it was possibly because my years as a married man before I said it myself. I was hoping she'd say something like that because I was thinking it had to do with my experience in this DR, so it's cool she felt so too.

It was indeed quite surprising to see noticeable changes in who I am: my habits, thoughts, mindset, and speech. I know that was the plan and that I scripted it to be so, but to see it happen still brings about a new question: how much can these aftereffects be influenced and how much of a positive change can each of us make in ourselves with scripts for what happens when we come back.

Anyway, I hope this is of help in inspiration and motivation for many of you out there, and that my experiences and method make a profound impact in even just one of you guy's lives.

I wish you the best of success and much love,
A fellow reality shifter

2023.06.04 01:29 JoshAsdvgi The Life and Death of Sweet Medicine

The Life and Death of Sweet Medicine

The Life and Death of Sweet Medicine

A long time ago the people had no laws, no rules of behavior- they hardly knew enough to survive.
And they did shameful things out of ignorance, because they didn't understand how to live.
There was one man among them who had a natural sense of what was right.
He and his wife were good, hard- working people, a family to be proud of.
The knew how to feel ashamed, and this feeling kept them from doing wrong.
Their only child was a daughter, beautiful and modest, who had reached the age when girls begin to think about husbands and making a family.
One night a man's voice spoke to her in a dream.
"You are handsome and strong, modest and young.
Therefore Sweet Root will visit you."
Dismissing it as just a dream, the girl went cheerfully about her chores the next day.
On the following night, however, she heard the voice again:
"Sweet Root is coming- woman's medicine which makes a mother's milk flow.
Sweet Root is coming as a man comes courting."
The girl puzzled over the words when she awoke, but in the end shrugged her shoulders.
People can't control their dreams, she thought, and the idea of a visit from a medicine root didn't make any sense.
On the third night the dream recurred, and this time it was so real that a figure seemed to be standing beside the buffalo robe she slept on.
He was talking to her, telling her: "Sweet Root is coming; he is very near.
Soon he will be with you."
On the fourth night she heard the same voice and saw the same figure.
Disturbed, she told her mother about it the next morning.
"There must be something in it," she said.
"It's so real and the voice is so much like a man's voice."
"No, its just a dream," her mother said. "It doesn't mean anything."
But from that time on, the girl felt different.
Something was stirring, growing within her, and after a few months, her condition became obvious: she was going to have a baby.
She told her parents that no man had touched her, and they believed her.
But others would not be likely to, and the girl hid her condition.
When she felt the birth pangs coming on, she went out into the prairie far from the camp and built herself a brush shelter.
Doing everything herself, she gave birth to a baby boy.
She dried the baby, wrapped him in soft moss, and left him there in the wickiup, for in her village a baby without a father would be scorned and treated badly.
Praying that someone would find him, she went sadly home to her parents.
At about the same time, an old woman was out searching the prairie for wild turnips, which she dug up with an animal's shoulder blade.
She heard crying, and following the sound, came to the wickiup.
She was overjoyed to find the baby, as she had never had one of her own.
All around the brush shelter grew the sweet root which makes a mother's milk flow; so she named the boy Sweet Medicine.
She took him home to her shabby tipi even though she had nothing to offer him but love.
In the tipi next to the old woman's lived a young mother who was nursing a small child, and she agreed to nurse Sweet Medicine also.
He grew faster and learned faster than ordinary children and was weaned in no time.
When he was only ten yearas old, he had already grown-up wisdom and hunting skill far in advance of his age.
But because he had no family and lived at the edge of the camp in a poor tipi, no one paid any attention to Sweet Medicine's exceptional powers.
That year there was a drought, very little game, and much hunger in the village. "Grandmother," he told her, "find me an old buffalo hide- any dried out, chewed up scrap with holes in it will do."
The woman searched among the refuse piles and found a wrinkled, brittle piece that the starving dogs had been chewing on.
When she brought it to Sweet Medicine, he told her, "Take this to the stream outside the camp, wash it in the flowing water, make it pliable, scrape it clean.
" After she had done this Sweet Medicine took a willow wand and bent it into a hoop, which he colored with sacred red earth paint.
He cut the buffalo hide into one long string and wove it back and forth over the hoop, making a kind of net with an opening in the center.
Then he cut four wild cherry sticks, sharpened them to a point, and hardened them in the hearth fire.
The next morning he said: "Grandmother, come with me.
We're going to play the hoop-and-stick game."
He took the hoop and the cherry-wood sticks and walked into the middle of the camp circle.
"Grandmother, roll this hoop for me," he said.
She rolled the hoop along the ground and Sweet Medicine hurled his pointed sticks through the center of it, hitting the right spot every time.
Soon alot of people, men and women, boys and girls, came to watch the strange new game.
Then Sweet Medicine cried: "Grandmother, let me hit it once more and make the hoop turn into a fat buffalo calf!"
Again he threw his stick like a dart, again the stick went through the center of the hoop, and as it did so the hoop turned into a fat, yellow buffalo calf.
The stick had pierced its heart, and the calf fell down dead.
"Now you people will have plenty to eat," said Sweet Medicine.
"Come and butcher this calf."
The people gathered and roasted chunks of tender calf meat over their fires.
And no matter how many pieces of flesh they cut from the calf's body, it was never picked clean.
However much they ate, there was always more.
So the people had their fill, and that was the end of the famine.
It was also the first hoop-and-stick game played among the Cheyenne.
This sacred game has much power attached to it, and it is still being played.
A boy's first kill is an important happening in his life, something he will always remember.
After killing his first buffalo a boy will be honored by his father, who may hold a feast for him and give him a man's name.
There would be no such feast for Sweet Medicine, all the same, he was very happy when he killed a fat, yellow calf on his first hunt.
He was skinning and butchering it when he was approached by an elderly man, a chief too old to do much hunting, but still harsh and commanding.
"This is just the kind of hide I have been looking for," said the chief.
"I will take it."
"You can't have a boy's first hide." said Sweet Medicine.
"Surely you must know this.
But you are welcome to half of the meat, because I honor old age."
The chief took the meat but grabbed the hide too, and began to walk off with it.
Sweet Medicine took hold of one end, and they started a tug-of-war.
The chief used his riding whip on Sweet Medicine, shouting: "How dare a poor nothing boy defy a chief?"
As he whipped Sweet Medicine again and again across the face, the boy's fighting spirit was aroused.
He grabbed a big buffalo leg bone and hit the old man over the head.
Some say Sweet Medicine killed that chief, others say the old man just fell down stunned.
But in the village the people were angry that a mere boy had dared to fight the old chief. Some said, "Lets whip him," others said, "Lets kill him."
After he had returned to the old woman's lodge, Sweet Medicine sensed what was going on.
He said: "Grandmother, some young men of the warrior societies will come here to kill me for having stood up for myself."
He thanked her for her kindness to him and then fled from the village.
Later when the young warriors came, they were so angry to find the boy gone that they pulled down the lodge and set fire to it.
The following morning someone saw Sweet Medicine, dressed as a Fox warrior, standing on a hill overlooking the village.
His enemies set out in pursuit, but he was always just out of their reach and they finally retired exhausted.
The next morning he appeared as an Elk warrior, carrying a crooked coupstick wrapped in otter skin.
Again, they tried to catch him and kill him, and again he evaded them.
They resumed their futile chase on the third morning, when he wore the red face paint and feathers of a Red Shield warrior, and on the fourth, when he dressed like a Dog soldier and shook a small red rattle tied with buffalo hair at his pursuers.
On the fifth day he appeared in the full regalia of a Cheyenne chief.
That made the village warriors angrier than ever, but they still couldn't catch him, and after that they saw him no more.
Wandering alone over the prairie, the boy heard a voice calling, leading him to a beautiful dark-forested land of many hills.
Standing apart from the others was a single mountain shaped like a huge tipi: the sacred mountain called Bear Butte.
Sweet Medicine found a secret opening which has since been closed (or perhaps is visible to him alone) and entered the mountain.
It was hollow inside like a tipi, forming a sarcred lodge filled with people who looked like ordinary men and women, but were really powerful spirits.
"Grandson, come in, we have been expecting you,"the holy people said, and when Sweet Medicine took his seat, they began teaching him the Cheyenne way to live so that he could return to the people and give them this knowledge.
First of all, the spirits gave him the sacred four arrows, saying,
"This is the great gift we are handing you.
With these wonderful arrows, the tribe will prosper.
Two arrows are for war and two are for hunting.
But there is much, much more to the four arrows.
They have great powers.
They contain rules by which men ought to live."
The spirit people taught Sweet Medicine how to pray to the arrows, how to keep them, how to renew them.
They taught him the wise laws of the forty-four chiefs.
They taught him how to set up rules for the warrior societies.
They taught him how women should be honored.
They taught him the many useful things by which people could live, survive, and prosper, things that people had not yet learned at that time.
Finally they taught him how to make a special tipi in which the sacred arrows were to be kept.
Sweet Medicine listened respectfully and learned well, and finally an old spirit man burned incense of sweet grass to purify both Sweet Medicine and the sacred arrow bundle.
Then the Cheyenne boy put the holy bundle on his back and began the long journey home to his people.
During his absence there had been a famine in the land.
The buffalo had gone into hiding, for they were angry that the people did not know how to live and were behaving badly.
When Sweet Medicine arrived at the village, he found a group of tired and listless children, their ribs sticking out, who were playing with little buffalo figures they had made out of mud.
Sweet Medicine immediately changed the figures into large chunks of juicy buffalo meat and fat.
"Now there's enough for you to eat," he told the young ones, "with plenty left over for your parents and grandparents.
Take the meat, fat, and tongues into the village, and tell two good young hunters to come out in the morning to meet me."
Though the children carried the message and two young hunters went out and looked everywhere for Sweet Medicine the next day, all they saw was a big eagle circling above them.
They tried again on the second and third days with no success, but on the fourth morning they found Sweet Medicine standing on top of a hill overlooking the village.
He told the two: "I have come bringing a wonderful gift from the Creator which the spirits inside the great medicine mountain have sent you.
Tell the people to set up a big lodge in the center of the camp circle.
Cover its floor with sage, and purify it with burning sweet grass.
Tell everyone to go inside the tipi and stay there, no one must see me approaching."
When at last all was made ready, Sweet Medicine walked slowly toward the village and four times called out: "People of the Cheyenne, with a great power I am approaching.
Be joyful.
The sacred arrows I am bringing."
He entered the tipi with the sacred arrow bundle and said:
"You have not yet learned the right way to live.
That is why the Ones above were angry and the buffalo went into hiding."
The two young hunters lit the fire, and Sweet Medicine filled a deer-bone pipe with sacred tobacco.
All night through, he taught the people what the spirits inside the holy mountain had taught him.
These teachings established the way of the Tsistsistas, the true Cheyenne nation.
Toward the morning, Sweet Medicine sang four sacred songs.
After each song he smoked the pipe, and its holy breath ascended through the smoke hole up into the sky, up to the great mystery.
At daybreak, as the sun rose and the people emerged from the sacred arrow lodge, they found the prairie around them covered with buffalo.
The spirits were no longer angry.
The famine was over.
For many nights to come, Sweet Medicine instructed the people in the sacred laws.
He lived among the Cheyenne for a long time and made them into a proud tribe respected throughout the plains.
Four lives the Creator had given him, but even Sweet Medicine was not immortal.
Only the rocks and the mountains are forever.
When he grew old and feeble and felt that the end of his appointed time was near, he directed the people to carry him to a place near the sacred Bear Butte.
There they made a small hut for him out of cottonwood branches and cedar lodge poles covered with bark and leaves.
They spread its floor with sage, flat cedar leaves, and fragrant grass.
It was a good lodge to die in, and when they placed him before it, he addressed the people for the last time:
"I have seen in my mind that some time after I am dead...and may the time be long...light-skinned bearded men will arrive with sticks spitting fire.
They will conquer the land and drive you before them.
They will kill the animals who give you their flesh that you may live, and they will bring strange animals for you to ride and eat.
They will introduce war and evil, strange sickness and death.
They will try and make you forget Maheo, the Creator, and the things I have taught you, and will impose their own alien, evil ways.
They will take your land little by little, until there is nothing left for you.
I do not like to tell you this, but you must know.
You must be strong when that bad time comes, you men, and particularly you women, because much depends on you, because you are the perpetuators of life and if you weaken, the Cheyenne will cease to be.
Now I have said all there is to say.
Then Sweet Medicine went into his hut to die.

2023.06.04 01:21 hellolilymae What is even happening anymore?!

I have raised my step daughter with my husband since she was a year old. She is about to turn 9. She does not remember a life without me in it, and has always confided in me and we seemed to have a really close bond. You can look at my post history for some of what she is experiencing with BM and unfortunately my in laws. Just this week my SD tells me she doesn't have toothpaste at her mom's and hasn't brushed her teeth in a week, the house has a bug infestation, and while we were on a walk she began stomping all of the cracks saying she wanted to break her mom's back because she hates her. There's a lot that's gone on over the years, and she has confided in us and asked for advice to help her get through the times she is with her mom. I do believe there are serious things that are currently going on in the home, and we have documented everything and gone to court multiple times. We currently have 50/50. This brings me to yesterday when it was time for SD to leave and go spend her week with BM. SD and I completed a drawing together, and made a bookmark. I told her she could take her bookmark with her if she wanted, so she stuck it into a piece of paper to take with her. I looked at the paper and noticed a phone number tucked down next to the bookmark in a fold. I asked her what it was, and she told me it was nothing. I took it out and see it is a phone number from a printed piece of paper. We didn't bring anything with a printed number on it home all week, and I wasn't familiar with the number. I was confused but I told her to throw it away, that she didn't need it. Then I asked her what the folded paper was and she told me it was a drawing for her mom, so I just said "oh okay" and didn't think anything of it. Well, she accidentally left the paper behind when she went home so I picked it up to put it away for her when she came back next time. On the outside of the paper it said "find the secret message" and I showed my husband. We both laughed because she tends to hide silly messages in drawings, so we wanted to see what she wrote this time. It said "Your house is soooo much better than there's! Here's a reward for you! Also, I want to start talking like an adult so can you set a timer for 10 minutes and let me cuss during that time? Please?" And it was written on the drawing we made together. My husband and I could not even believe what we read. This child comes to our house EVERY. SINGLE. WEEK. telling us she hates living with her mom and talks about serious neglect and borderline abusive situations, which is why we pushed so hard for 50/50. We spent a substantial amount of money fighting for her. This is the same child that cries in bed almost every night begging me to help her with her situation and has started calling me mom. I feel so hurt and blindsided. Now I don't know how much is true and what she's been lying to us about. Plus, I have no idea what the point in it would even be?! I've wondered for some time why BM hates me and how she comes up with all the crazy accusations she has against me, and now I think I know where she's gotten them. Has anyone else had to go through this? I have no idea what to do or even say when she comes back. My trust very broken. I can't believe a child I've treated like my own for almost 9 years would manipulate us like this.

2023.06.04 00:30 Polyphemus117 Despite his powerful connections, one of the most prominent gang bosses in New England simply disappeared without a trace. What happened to Danny Walsh?

As the Roaring Twenties drew to a close, it was obvious to the American public that the “noble experiment” of Prohibition was a complete failure. Despite the promises of religious leaders and lawmakers, the total ban on the manufacture and sale of all alcoholic beverages had led to an increase in crime and violence throughout the United States. A lucrative black market for illicit alcohol had created a climate that allowed organized criminal syndicates to flourish. Public sentiment was turning against Prohibition, and more and more voices called for its repeal. The shrewder gangsters realized that Prohibition would soon no longer be the law of the land and they would need to find alternate sources of income. As the more prescient mobsters made plans to go into alternate ventures such as gambling, sex work, narcotics, or labor racketeering, it was clear there would not be enough business to go around. Competition would have to be eliminated. The long established partnerships between Italian, Jewish, and Irish gangs began to fray. The former two, in many cases, conspired together against the Irish mob. Irish immigrants had arrived in the US earlier and possessed the advantage of already speaking English on arrival. Irish gangsters enjoyed exclusive connections with politicians and law enforcement officials- connections that the Italian and Jewish gangsters knew they would need for themselves once the country went “wet” again.
Accordingly, from the years 1928 to 1933, there was a wholesale massacre of top-ranked Irish mobsters and bootleggers all over the United States. In St. Paul, MN, “Dapper” Danny Hogan started his car and was blown to pieces by dynamite planted by his Jewish counterparts. In New Orleans, the Italian mob gunned down Bill Bailey in a drive-by shooting. In Brooklyn, Charles “Vannie” Higgins was shot and killed in front of his 7 year old daughter. Similar stories were happening in many major cities throughout the United States.
Rumrunning in Providence, RI, was largely done by Danny Walsh. Born to Irish immigrants in 1893, Walsh was a true underworld success story. When Prohibition became the law of the land in 1920, he was a lowly clerk in a hardware store. Fast forward only five years, and Walsh was a multimillionaire with multiple country estates and luxury apartments in Providence. Walsh had assembled a fleet of boats and airplanes that supplied the thirsty Rhode Islanders with liquor under cover of darkness. His fortune grew further when he became involved in the lucrative world of horse racing. Even the stock market crash of 1929 hardly slowed down the bootlegging business. Despite a few minor brushes with the law- including a much-publicized 1929 incident when the Coast Guard killed three of his men- Walsh seemed largely untouchable. Like many gangsters of this period, he was something of a public figure, the local press often reporting on the exploits of his gang.
Walsh consolidated his power by making connections with the elite of the both the upper crust and the underbelly. His friends in Boston included both the notorious mob boss Charles “King” Solomon and a fellow Irish-American powerbroker by the name of Joseph P. Kennedy- though you may be more familiar with his children and grandchildren. Known as a gangster who preferred to settle disputes with a handshake rather than a tommy gun, Walsh was reportedly respected and well-liked even among his fellow criminal kingpins.
Someone clearly felt otherwise.
On January 24, 1933, King Solomon was shot dead in the men's room of a Boston nightclub he owned. With Solomon dead, Walsh no longer had the protection offered by his alliance with a larger outfit. This may have been a contributing factor to what happened next.
On February 2, 1933, Danny Walsh met six associates at the Bank Cafe in Pawtuxet Village, RI for a business dinner. These six men saw him off as he got into his car to drive home. They were the last people to ever see Danny Walsh.
For several days there was no leads for any of Walsh's family, business partners, or underworld partners to follow. Finally, an anonymous note was delivered to Walsh's brother Joseph- a ransom demand for $40,000 to be delivered to the Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston. While the idea of kidnapping a mob boss for ransom might seem laughable today, the “snatch racket” was hardly uncommon at the time, especially as the Depression forced more and more people into financial desperation. Criminal operations usually considered it more pragmatic to simply pay the ransom and recover their operatives rather than lose whatever talents or skills they possessed, which would cost them more money in the long run. Joseph and a few of Walsh's most trusted lieutenants complied with the demand, bringing $40,000 in cash to Boston and handing it around a hotel room door to a man they could not see. They returned to Providence and awaited word of Danny's release.
Word never came. It became increasingly clear that Danny Walsh had vanished without a trace and was never coming back.
Rumors spiraled in the press, the underworld, and even in an inconclusive federal investigation. There were reports of Italian men being spotted in the act of digging a large hole on one of Walsh's properties and sprinkling lime into it, but nothing came of further investigation. Some newspaper articles at the time gave lurid accounts of Walsh being stood in a tub of cement until it hardened around his feet and then hurled into the ocean- the first appearance of the “concrete shoes” trope that appears so often in gangster fiction. These, too, were dismissed as fabrication.
The disappearance of Danny Walsh has entered Rhode Island folklore. As recently as 2017, unidentified remains found in the area have been seriously investigated as possibly being his corpse. This practice will no doubt continue until a definite ID is made.
What became of Danny Walsh? In light of the wider wave of murders targeting Irish racketeers, it seems probable he was murdered. But who is responsible? Where are his remains? Was the unidentified man who collected a ransom at the Copley Plaza Hotel the real culprit or simply an opportunistic scam artist?
It seems probable that anyone with firsthand knowledge of this crime is long dead. Perhaps one day a corpse will be found that will answer at least one question, but until then this remains unsolved. Danny Walsh is doubtlessly but one of many victims of violent crime from the “noble experiment” of Prohibition.

If you're interested in learning more about the story of Danny Walsh, here's a few good articles.

Season Review 22/23
Wow wow wow wow wow. Somebody pinch me, I must be dreaming. Ow ow ow ow ow, stop pinching me, OK, I'm obviously not dreaming.
We actually did it. We managed to get promoted through the playoffs. It's absolute madness. I had watched us compete in 6 playoffs, and who would have thought that 7th time is the charm!
Before I start you can read the 21/22 season review here from our season where we finished 6th and got dumped out the playoffs by Huddersfield.
You can also read the 22/23 season preview here where I predicted a very optimistic top 8 finish. No one could have predicted the season we were about to have. I'm not going to discuss promotion in depth, because it was only a week ago and probably won't sink in until the fixtures are released on June 15th.
In case you didn't know, this is what our away end looks like

Overview and Pre season thoughts

As mentioned above, I knew we would manage to keep the momentum going into this season. I just didn't expect us to gain this much momentum. Having finished 6th and on 75 points in the 21/22 season. Everything was kept steady in the off season, we recruited well, and only lost one significant player (discussed below). Throughout the off season though social media was awash with speculation that Luton Town would do a Barnsley (meaning losing in the playoffs and then battling relegation/getting relegated the following season, which Barnsley did in the 21/22 season), this was speculation was further fuelled by the signing of two of Barnsley's relegated front three (more on that later). However, one bright spark in the off season was the lads from the Second Tier Pod who went bold and predicted a solid season for Luton Town, with Ryan predicting 2nd and Justin predicting 3rd. These guys know ball. Nathan Jones was keen to kick on with the squad, and was 110% committed to the cause...

Who left, and who did we sign?

The most significant outgoing was that of Kal Naismith, who was the fans player of the season in 21/22. The manner in which he joined Bristol City left a sour taste in the mouth of the Hatters, with the club not knowing he had agreed terms, with the Welsh wannabes announcing him a whole 24 hours before Luton Town. Also the fact that he was chatting some boilerplate shite in his introduction interview, about being excited about getting to work with "the best manager in the league". A truly absurd statement that even Stevie Wonder could see was the dumbest thing that anyone could ever say in the history of mankind. Regardless, Hatters were annoyed and concerned, mostly because Kal was a good player, he made that LCB role his own, and was a vital cog in our 21/22 playoff machine, and scored a significant and wonderful goal against Bournemouth that pretty much kickstarted our playoff push after the long covid/midseason break - hey guys, remember covid?
Less significant outgoings on the pitch were Peter "I should be starting every game" Kioso (to Rotherham) and Danny Hylton (to Northampton). With Kioso leaving, we were losing depth in the defensive unit, whereas with Danny Hylton, we were losing part of the furniture at the Kenny. Sure Danny had never hit the heights of his League 2 bagsman days after his nasty injury in League 1, but he scored some vital goals in 21/22 - grabbed the point at Bristol City and sealed the win against Derby with a wonderful strike. Also his head of hair is one of the greatest come back stories in modern times.

We brought in some numbers in the off season, although as discussed on social media, these players seemed to be "for the future":
  • Alfie Doughty (undisclosed) - From Stoke, he hadn't hit the heights expected following his transfer from Charlton, having spent the season on loan at Cardiff in 21/22 (along with Cody Drameh - more on him later). Regardless he was one Nathan Jones was tracking for a long time.
  • Cauley Woodrow (undisclosed) - From relegated Barnsley, it was a little homecoming for Cauley having come through our academy and left us for Fulham as a fresh faced 16 year old.
  • Matt Macey (undisclosed) - From Hibernian, the former loanee raised eyebrows amongst the fan base. People said, well he's shit, and then others said, nah that was Stuart Moore, Matt Macey was the decent one. Spoiler alert - they are both shit.
  • Louie Watson (undisclosed compensation) - From Derby, we capitalised on the financial straits at Derby and came out with one of their prized academy assets. He was seen as one for the future.
  • Luke Freeman (free) - From Sheffield United, he was seen as a broken thing, with injuries having caught up with him during his time at Sheffield United, again one that Nathan Jones was very keen to work with, having played together at Yoevil.
  • Carlton Morris (fee in region of £1.5m) - From relegated Barnsley, we didn't know what to expect from him considering he was a striker that had never scored more than 10 goals in a season. Also he had just been relegated with Barnsley. However, he added much needed depth and support up top for Elijah. At this point we knew him as the player that scored that wonderful goal in our 2-1 victory over Barnsley in 21/22, where he skinned Naismith, and sat Osho down before dinking it over Shea.
  • Ethan Horvath (loan) - From Nottingham Forest, fresh from having won promotion through the playoffs with Forest last season, he was seen as a good keeper to have in the team, and he was desperate for first team football. Rumours were that there was an option to make the loan permanent. After last season where we went through 6 keepers, we needed consistency between the sticks.
  • Then we had some strictly developmental signings; Tobias Braney (who looks a proper player and has been bagging goals out on loan), Daniel Idiakhoa (who has since been released in the retained list), Jayden Luker (who remains under contract at the club), John McCatee (who was immediately loaned back out to Grimsby) and Aribim Pepple (who was loaned to Grimsby, but they sent him back, regardless, he's been good in our development squads).

How did we do?

I write this with a big smirk on my face. Because it still hasn't sunk in.
Like the 21/22 season, it was a season of two halves (and two managers), unlike last season whereby there was a covid break, this season we had a conveniently placed World Cup. I always thought Winter World Cups were the greatest idea, and certainly never ever criticised FIFA, The Qatar WC bidding buddies, or the countless executives that have become incredibly wealthy from the previous World Cup who effortlessly and repeatedly moved not only the goal posts but mountains in order to give us what we all wanted, the first World Cup in the Middle East - in the middle of fucking winter.
Anyway, I'm veering off topic. I'm not doing a monthly breakdown by the way, you can get that off wikipedia. I'm sure the 10 people who read this will be wildly disappointed.
We can break the season down in two ways - Luton under Nathan Jones and Luton under Rob Edwards. I'll do the stats after this overview.
Nathan Jones took us almost the whole way to the World Cup break, but he was just itching to move. Our start to the season was mediocre, we were struggling to win games. In fact we didn't win a game until our 5th game of the season against Swansea, with 2 draws and 2 losses to start the season, including the second worst performance of the season against Bristol City, leaving us 23rd in the table. After that we had a mini purple patch, completing the welsh double beating Cardiff and drawing with Sheffield United. Which took us up to 9th in the table. Before throwing the game away against Wigan "prompt wage payment" Athletic. Fortunately we then hit a 7 game unbeaten run, which shot us up to 4th in the table. Which took us into the match against them lot down the road. We were in great form, they were already on their second manager (more on that first manager in a bit), everything was aligned for us to go there and turn them over. But disaster struck, we were utter shit and lost 4 - 0. On the bright side it gave them a high point for the season. Post match, Nathan Jones had plenty of excuses, mentioning stomach bugs, he couldn't fill the bench etc, but the eventual reality was more concerning. We only picked up 1 win from the next 4 games, culminating in an abject display against his former side Stoke, where it all but confirmed that Jones would be leaving the club. This would take us to the end of Nathan Jones' tenure. Jones moved (amicably and with massive compensation) to Southampton - where he wouldn't stay for long, but reports surfaced after his move that Southampton had been in negotiations with him for 5 weeks prior. No surprise he didn't give a shit post match against Watford. Regardless, he moved in in better faith than when he did against Stoke, He left the club in 9th place, and paved the way for Mick Harford to coach for the last game before the World Cup break, a 1 - 1 draw against Rotherham. We entered the World Cup break in 10th place, and it gave us time to pick our manager properly.

At the end of last season (I know this narrative has been done to death, but keep with me here). Watford appointed Rob Edwards from Forest Green Rovers, a young up and coming manager, to take over from Roy Hodgson, a legend who got Watford relegated at Selhurst Park, and then had the balls to clap the Crystal Palace fans (as his last season there was behind closed doors), whilst ignoring the Watford fans who had travelled to South London, because they were too far away. This is made even funnier due to the fact that he returned to Palace, and absolutely turned their season around. Anyway, Rob Edwards was the man to replace the Hodge. Scott Duxbury, Watford CEO stated "Rob will be backed through hell and high water". It turned out that translated to 10 league matches, of which he had only lost 2, this included beating Burnley, who would go on to leave the Championship quivering in their wake.
During the winter break, the Luton board were very impressed with Rob Edwards as a candidate, and made the bold decision to employ him. In addition to this our January window included the loss of James Bree, who moved to Southampton to join up with Nathan Jones and Harry Cornick to Bristol City, fair play to them, they signed our best striker. Cameron Jerome also left by mutual termination, as he wanted to move back up North to his family. We replaced Bree with Cody Drameh on loan from Leeds and replaced Cornick with Joe Taylor, an unproven striker who was yet to break into the first team at Peterborough. However, Big Mick swore by him, and has been tracking him for years. We also brought in Marvelous Nakamba on loan from Aston Villa (who would turn out to be the difference maker, more on him later). Although, the general consensus was that we were too threadbare at the back, and up top, as injury could expose our lack of depth.
But in Rob we trust, and we haven't looked back since. Since his appointment, we have only lost 3 matches in the league, one of which was his first game in charge, and even in that game we played sensational stuff for the first 35 minutes against Middlesbrough, our eventual opponents in the playoff final. After that loss we had a great Christmas period with 3 wins against QPR, Norwich and Huddersfield. Before a loss against WBA who were in phenomenal form. They managed to overturn a 2 nil deficit in the second half, and fair play to them. We then won another 3 in a row, drew 2 in a row before a hard to take defeat against Burnley, where the fair result would have been a draw. But then we didn't look back, finishing the season with a 14 game unbeaten run, which led us to our highest finish in the Football pyramid since, well, last season. Which was our highest finish in the football pyramid since the 1981/82 season where we also got promoted to the top tier. This was made all the more sweeter by getting some payback against Watford, sure it wasn't 4 - 0, but it was a significant moment for the fans and Rob Edwards, as that was when a lot of us felt, we would be making the playoffs. We eventually finished 3rd, thus making it 8 successive seasons where we have finished higher than the previous season.
To cap off a totally wizard season, we then had the playoffs, and the rest as they say, is history.

Time for some RAPID STATS

  • Luton Town lost 18 points from winning positions under Nathan Jones
  • Luton Town lost 9 points from winning positions under Rob Edwards
  • James Bree still leads the team for chances created (60), he left in January. Next highest is Alfie Doughty with 54.
  • Luton Town had the second best away record in the league (41 points), only behind Burnley (47 points).
  • Carlton Morris is the first Luton player to score 20 or more goals in the second tier since Brian Stein (1981/82 season).
  • Luton Town were joint second in clean sheets with Coventry, our eventual playoff final opponents, with 20 apiece.
  • Luton Town had the second lowest xG conceded (44.6), behind Burnley 39.1. Meaning we didn't give away many chances to the opposition.

How did our players do?

As per my writer idol Mister PDW, these ratings were picked on a whim, don't shoot the messenger. This shows appearances (sub appearances), minutes played, goals, assists and WhoScored rating. I'm using a letter grade system for the squad, this is down to a whim and may contain some bias, take the ratings with a pinch of salt. Stats from WhoScored - League stats only (including playoffs). Sorted by most minutes played.
Ethan Horvath 47 appearances/4261 minutes 19 clean sheets - 6.48 B It was a steady enough season from the US Stopper. He did make some absolute howlers at some points during the season, but never went full 19/20 Sluga (look it up, his howlers were legendary). Although he finished with 19 clean sheets, a lot of his shortcomings were covered up by how the team defended as a whole, shown by our very low xG conceded. I appreciate his time at the club, but I wouldn't take him back here permanently.
Amari'i Bell 46(1) appearances/4167 minutes 1G/1A - 6.78 A+ Amari'i is quite literally the unsung hero of the playoff winning campaign. Having played at left wing back last season, and filling in for Alfie Doughty when he was unavailable this season. He played the majority of the season at left centre back, the position vacated by Kal Naismith. He was spectacular and offered so much more from that position than Kal did. He could carry the ball infield, he had the athleticism to make penetrating underlaps into the box and after all the stick he got from Blackburn fans, he can now stick two fingers up at them, and show off his medal.
Carlton Morris 44(3) appearances/3693 minutes 20G/7A - 7.21 A+ It was a slow start for Carlton as he bedded into the Luton lineup. He didn't make an impact until he scored his first goal of the season against Swansea, which was also our first win. But, after that goal he didn't look back. He also managed to kick on further under Rob Edwards. He is simply a player that has a bit of everything in his locker, able to score from 3 yards or 30 yards.
Tom Lockyer 42 appearances/3638 minutes 4G/1A - 7.13 A+ Considering Locks couldn't buy a game at the beginning of the season, having only come in to the squad for the Carabao Cup game against Newport, where we lost. Swansea was also a watershed moment for him, just like Carlton. This season Hatters saw the finest defensive displays courtesy of Locks, and absolute colossus at the back. It was very concerning when he collapsed during the playoff final. However, we have been told that he is absolutely fine, and will be ready for pre season. Hopefully meaning we will tie him down with a longer contract.
Elijah Adebayo 42(3) appearances/3523 minutes 8G/4A - 6.72 A Sure Elijah didn't hit the heights (goalwise) that he did last season. However, he formed a solid partnership up top with Morris. Fortunately it meant that the heavy burden didn't all sit on Elijah's shoulders. If anyone doubts what Elijah brings to the team, just watch his assist for Jordan Clark's goal in the playoff final. His run, his feet, his turning Kyle McFadzean inside out before his pass to find Clark, shows you what he brings to the team. Even playing a three at the back system, any defenders are going to have a shit day trying to stop Elijah and Carlton from executing their movement. Also, it was great to see him get a stab at the playoffs this season after cruelly missing out last season.
Jordan Clark 37(4) appearances/3390 minutes 3G/4A - 6.83 A This season, we all saw what Clicker was about, his movement, intelligence and passing were fully on display. It's remarkable that he was signed as a right winger and has been reboxed as an attacking midfielders, he brings the attributes and movement of a winger and takes it between the lines, making him nigh on impossible to pick up for the opposition. Having a similar trajectory to Luton, having been playing for Hyde against Luton in our final conference match. He deserves a shot at the Premier League, and his journey is also remarkable. Just like Luton making it from conference to Premier League in 9 seasons.
Allan Campbell 38(5) appearances/3273 minutes 3G/2A - 6.52 B+ I'm being incredibly tight with these scores. Sorry Wee Al. He had a good season, not as stellar as last season, but he brought the same attitude on the pitch, he runs and presses like he has 5 lungs. He also has an eye for goal from midfield with some spectacular hits, most importantly putting the cherry on top of the Watford game, and forever writing himself into Hatters folklore. Unfortunately, with Nakamba entering the fray in January, he was the unfortunate one to miss out on those two remaining midfield spots.
Alfie Doughty 28(3) appearances/2438 minutes 2G/5A - 7.14 A+ What a player we have on our hands with Alfie, he will seamlessly move up to the Premier League like he's easing himself into a nice warm bath. Pace, trickery and a delivery to match, he has been a joy to watch play this season. Fans were concerned about the speed at which he was being eased in at the start of the season, but I guess when you have had the injury record that Alfie has, it just makes sense. Also, that goal against QPR was just spectacular.
James Bree 27 appearances/2430 minutes 0G/4A - 6.99 A Football can be a cruel game, it can also be incredibly ironic, and that irony can be absolutely hilarious. James Bree was both promoted and relegated this season. He did well for the first half of the season, needing to fill in right centre back, which he did well, whilst also contributing many key passes to the Hatters cause. However, the simple fact is, when Osho came in to the right centre back role, we looked a lot better defensively, and that showed with our climb up the table. I'm still disgruntled about the fee being £750k, what with his contract expiring. But sometimes the grass isn't always greener, is it, James!? Well, at least he's getting a promotion medal.
Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu 27(6) appearances/2394 minutes 3G/1A - 6.62 A This man is a modern Luton Legend. He gets better every season, and he has been worth every penny of the £50,000 that John Still paid for him as a 19 year old back in the Conference. Did you know if plays one minute in the Premier League, he would be the first player in history to have played in the top 5 levels of the English Pyramid for one club? Of course you did, it's been all over the news. He deserves everything he gets, and I'm delighted the club have offered him new terms, Pelly deserves the world.
Gabe Osho 25(5) appearances/2273 minutes 3G/0A - 6.64 A The only reason this isn't an A+ is because of his first half of the season. He is the biggest beneficiary of Rob Edwards coming in at Luton. Under Nathan Jones he looked edgy and shit scared to make a mistake, however, under Edwards he was calmness personified with his big runs out of defence with the ball seemingly glued to his foot. He also scored some vital goals, the first against Watford, and then the goal against Sunderland in the away playoff leg to get us up and running. He is another that his currently being negotiated with for a new deal, and he deserves it.
Dan Potts 24(2) appearances/2020 minutes 1G/0A - 6.84 B Another player who has been on a spectacular journey with Luton after being signed by John Still in League 2. He started as a left back, but with our formation change over the last two seasons has been re-engineered as a left centre back, which in my opinion is a much better position for him. He doesn't give you the athleticism that Bell gives, but if a ball comes into the box, he will get his absolutely beautiful head onto that ball. He had solid performances this season, however, the emergence of Bell as well as a pesky back injury kept him out for a good chunk of the season. He also scored what turned out to be the winning penalty in the playoff final.
Marvelous Nakamba 19(1) appearances/1726 minutes 0G/0A - 6.93 A+ I remember saying on the Oak Road Hatter podcast when Marv came in, he was the difference between getting into the playoffs and not getting into the playoffs. How wrong I was. He was an instrumental cog in the machine that got us promoted. I hope Villa are sensible with their valuation for a player that they simply don't want, so we don't have to shoot our transfer load prematurely on a player that wants to be at Luton. Marv also stepped up in the playoff final shootout and cooly slotted away his pen, which was remarkable considering during games he would always pass the ball rather than shoot.
Cody Drameh 19 appearances/1581 minutes 0G/2A - 7.19 A We were all very nervous when Bree left, because were losing a solid option at right wing back. However, enter Cody Drameh. Another bitten by the cruel irony of football, with Leeds being relegated as he makes the step up to Premier League. However, Cody will be alright, with Luton attempting to re-sign him as well as Burnley having a go too, he's got a Premier League move lined up. As he started with Luton you could see he had not played a lot of football, but he found his feet very quickly.
Reece Burke 15(7) appearances/1417 minutes 2G/0A - 6.71 B+ At the start of the season, if you had asked me who our best centre back was, it would have been Reece Burke. However, he seemingly has hamstring issues that have prevented him from being a top defender. Remember Hull signed him for £2m as a highly rated 21 year old. Regardless, this season he has scored 2 sensational goals; the piledriver against Blackburn, and then the intricate passing play against Huddersfield where he was instrumental throughout the build up. It would have been a B, if it had not been for his display in the playoff final, where he came on much earlier than expected for Tom Lockyer. If we can stay injury free, we have a Premier League quality defender on our hands.
Sonny Bradley 14(5) appearances/1219 minutes 0G/0A - 6.56 B- Sonny is leaving Luton Town at the end of his contract, and he has been a stellar figure for Luton Town. We won promotion to the Championship in his first season at the club, he was key in stabilising the club in the Championship, before pushing on up the league, and eventually winning this second promotion. However, it is known the personal issues he has been experiencing off the field, with his father Ray passing, suffering from long covid and issues with his child's health. No matter who you are, if you are hit with that many gut punches, you will stay down. But Bradley didn't because he's a hard bastard. The cherry on this cake was, a disgusting aerial challenge from Yakou Meite, from which Bradley landed horrendously, and it looked like a season ending injury. But Bradley being the hard bastard he is, he recovered, and plugged gaps in our defence towards the end of the season. Regardless, Sonny was getting exposed by some of the better strikers in the league, Gyokeres and then Archer had a lot of luck running beyond him, but in all fairness, they are both exceptional players. I'm delighted he's leaving us on a high, as he deserves it, and I hope he stays in the Championship and gets a move that works for him.
Luke Freeman 10(16) appearances/988 minutes 2G/1A - 6.41 C+ I wasn't expecting Luke Freeman to pull up trees this season, we all know about his injury history that restricting his appearances at Sheffield United. He showed glimpses of what he could do, the goal against QPR was a highlight for me. However, a troublesome groin kept him out for the majority of the season. He does a good job of looking busy on the pitch, without he had a flurry of creating chances at the beginning of the season, but went off the boil fast as his groin caught up with him. The + is purely because he managed to bag some goals and an assist.
Cauley Woodrow 5(22) appearances/741 minutes 2G/1A - 6.35 C+ I was expecting a lot from Cauley this season. Certainly more rotation with the front two, who ended up playing a tonne of games, because Cauley was picking up niggling injuries, with the last one keeping him out of the playoffs completely, he couldn't get any momentum during the season. He offers something completely different to our attack and his special touches can be seen at times. Regarding Nathan Jones deciding to play him as a 10, no. Just no. He is not a 10. Look at the goal against Norwich, what a strike. I hope he stays fit next season, because he has unfinished business in the Premier League.
Harry Cornick 7(12) appearances/740 minutes 1G/3A - 6.31 C- After his barnstormer of 21/22 I thought maybe Harry would kick on, but unfortunately not. He has always been very streaky in front of goal, but his finishing looked to have gone up a notch. Regardless, he wasn't getting enough first team minutes here and Bristol City needed a striker. So they signed Harry. Allegedly he went for more money than James Bree, which is absolutely criminal, considering they both had 6 months remaining on their contracts. Regardless Bristol City got a good, honest, hard working lad, and I hope he has a good season next year. Fortunately we sold him for more than we bought him, which is a great return on investment.
Fred Onyedinma 6(13) appearances/696 minutes 0G/2A - 6.35 C There is most certainly a player in there. Unfortunately with Fred, he is such an athlete he is prone to many injures. When he sets off one on of his sprints you just worry that he's going to pull a hamstring. If he can get through an entire season without injuries he would be flying. Perhaps his best role is as an impact sub, because currently he is unable to string back to back 90 minutes together.
Luke Berry 4(19) appearances/695 minutes 3G/0A - 6.43 B We know that Luke Berry is now mostly an impact player, who will happily step into the starting lineup when required. He is yet another that has been on a fantastic journey with us from League 2, and for him it's even more impressive because like Clark and Pelly he has made it from Conference football too. He is a scorer of vital goals, his three vital goals this season were; the late levellers against Rotherham and Millwall, as well as the winer against Blackpool. Love Bezza.
Henri Lansbury 6(4) appearances/458 minutes 1G/0A - 6.65 B When required Henri did a job, however, it is clear to see that he has lost his legs and maybe his passion for football, considering he has a new passion, mowing lawns. Although, he will be remembered this season for his absolute shitpinger against Hull City. He's now leaving the club, I don't see him joining another team, I reckon he's going full time lawn lad now.
Cameron Jerome 0(21) appearances/333 minutes 1G/1A - 6.22 C+ Considering his extremely limited role purely as an impact sub, Cammy J was an exceptional professional. Unfortunately the distance between his family up north was too much, therefore we agreed to mutually terminate his agreement. Shame he missed out on promotion with Bolton. I feel he would have continued to be a great depth option for us in the second half of the season. His legs have most certainly not gone, he is still a supreme athlete at 36 years old.
Louie Watson 3(2) appearances/220 minutes 0G/0A - 6.51 B- Most definitely one for the future, but in his little flurry of starts around the time of Rob Edwards first games was a great indicator of the tidy passing he could bring. However, the signing of Nakamba pretty much put a ceiling on his minutes with the first team, also I think the Grimsby FA cup replay might have given Rob Edwards second thoughts about playing him, I don't know, I'm not part of the Luton coaching staff! He can still continue to develop, and I would like to see him get first team minutes next season in the Championship.
Joe Taylor 1(5) appearances/130 minutes 0G/0A - 6.02 B- Definitely the best beneficiary of Cornick and Jerome leaving in January and Cauley's injury issues, as it immediately propelled him to third choice striker. However, Edwards was very reluctant to chuck him on the pitch. He was highly spoken of by Mick Harford and Darren MacAnthony, I don't put stock in what DMac says (although he does have an eye for attacking talent), but Mick knows recruitment and had been tracking him for years prior to the move. Joe was unfortunate to have his strike ruled out in the playoff final, but he showed great big balls to step up and take the second penalty. I reckon a championship/league 1 loan is in the pipeline for next season.
Admiral Muskwe 1(1) appearances/105 minutes 0G/0A - 6.51 F I'm at a loss with Muskwe, considering he is more senior than Joe Taylor and was recalled from Fleetwood on the same day we signed Joe, why wasn't he anywhere near the squad? He's most definitely one that we will be looking to cut our losses on next season. He had one flurry of good form, prior to AFCON last season, and since then, he has not hit the heights expected. His loan spell at Fleetwood consisted of 14 games, 3 goals (2 of those being pens). I wouldn't expect to see him here next season.
Harry Isted 1 appearance/90 minutes - 5.78 D I like Harry, but his only match this season was the 2-0 loss against Stoke, sure the rest of the team didn't do him any favours, by letting Stoke score two unmarked strikes from two crosses that were allowed to be sent in. I feel the club have done him a disservice, he has obvious talent, reflexes and shot stopping ability, he has shown that at Barnsley, and against Chelsea last season in the FA Cup. However, we opted to bring in emergency loans instead of giving him a chance (I know it was risky considering in 21/22 we were going through keepers like Spinal Tap go through drummers). He's left the club now, and I hope he gets a chance with a Championship club, he could do it.
James Shea 1 appearance/90 minutes - 6.54 C Shea got a chance with the final game of the season against Hull and managed to keep a clean sheet. He did really well to come back from an awful injury. However, I do not see him being first choice next season. Potentially second or third choice depending on how good Jack Walton is...
Elliot Thorpe 0(3) appearances/68 minutes - 6.19 C His season got off to a shit start, being loaned to Burton and not played. However, I don't know what we do with Elliot Thorpe, he was brought in with high expectations from Tottenham, he dropped down so he could stand a better chance of playing first team football, and he's ended up getting shunted out to the right wing back position. He look great in his cameo against Hull, but I thought we were getting a box to box midfielder. We've triggered an extension in his contract, I don't know if that means we are looking to get a fee by selling him, or whether we want to keep him about for further development.
Joe Johnson 0(2) appearances/38 minutes - 6.28 B I'm very excited about JJ, he's 17 and managed to not only break onto the bench, but get some vital first team minutes, with his first minutes coming in a high pressure game against eventual playoff winners Middlesbrough. Lots more to see of him, and possibly the start of the academy assembly line roaring back into gear.

What next?

One thing that is guaranteed is that we will be finishing higher than we did this season, Even if we finish 20th. You know what, I'm sure we are going to give it a good go. I don't think we will try and sign proven Premier League talent, but we are more likely to hoover up some of the hot talent in the Championship and League 1/League 2 for further development.
I expect quite a big clearout with lots of the players who haven't gotten near our squad to be moved on; Glen Rea is all but gone (well done to him for recovering from his horrendous injury too), Aribim Pepple needs a loan and Dion Pereira, who Bradford were begging to rejoin has barely played this season. Carlos Mendes Gomes is one I would like to see around the first team squad next season. Lots of headaches for Rob Edwards, Richie Kyle and Paul Trollope.
Exiting news to look forward to, the renovations are under way at the Kenny to welcome Premier League cameras and media teams, and ground will be broken at Power Court on 19th December 2023. These are amazing times to be a Hatter.
Bold early early early pre pre season prediction. Luton Town are finishing 17th next season!
I hope you enjoyed reading this.

HOW WE GOT HERE:
Brad Holmes is a wizard. What he has done as the Detroit GM in just 3 years has been a playoff push away from being quite remarkable, especially considering the context of succeeding prior general manager Bob Quinn which ended in typical Lions losing fashion. Brad Holmes would immediately come out swinging and first transaction as general manager was trading longtime franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for two first round picks, a third round pick, and quarterback Jared Goff. At the time, it was bittersweet for fans, as Stafford was the practically the lone bright spot in the last decade (outside of Megatron), but the haul they got in return was at least something. Stafford was injured and already likely leaving to chase a Super Bowl and Detroit was going into full rebuild mode so Detroit fans were just happy with what they could get. Brad ended up hiring a one time Head Coach, Dan Campbell. A pick made purely on the potential he would be able to change the culture with his grind it out, Football attitude Campbell was known for. All in all, it was business as usual for Detroit as they begin yet another rebuild....

Oh parity in sports.... You never cease to amaze us....
Somehow and someway, In Holmes' first draft, Penei Sewell falls to Detroit at #7 and the Lions draft room goes bananas on camera! At the time we did not know it, but Detroit just landed their future Pro Bowl leader in the trenches. In round 4, the Lions scoop a literal Sun God in Amon-Ra St. Brown. Little did we all know the impact both of these players would have today. Both players are arguably top 10 in their position.
Fast forward to 2022 and the Lions are coming off one of the most promising 3-13-1 seasons that you could ever ask for. The team and coaches have bought in to Dan Campbell's grind it out style of Football. The culture seemed to finally be changing and it felt like Jared Goff turning into a solid Stafford replacement, despite being considered a throw on by most in the Stafford trade.
The 2022 draft Brad Holmes' statement to the NFL. It does not matter where you take guys. If you know how to evaluate talent, you go for YOUR guys and you can be successful. Holmes was able to draft Aiden Aiden Hutchinson at #2 (some say he should have been #1), Jameson Williams (best receiver in the draft at 12 via trade), Kerby Joseph (who picked off Aaron Rodgers THREE TIMES IN ONE GAME!), and drafted James Houston and Malcolm Rodriguez in the 6th round. Both players are looking like future defensive stars. Dare I say the best 6th round success since the Pats drafted TB12? Don't @ me lol
The Lions followed up the draft with a MUCH improved 2022, landing a 9-8 winning record and going 8-2 in their final 10 games. Jared Goff is looking like the guy who took the Rams to the Superbowl, every position has young talent and this upcoming 2023 draft is looking like it could seriously push the Lions into serious playoff contention if the cards are played correctly.

Round 1: No. 12 (from CLE through HOU and ARI) – Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama
Flashback! Remember that Stafford trade where they got got the Rams draft pick? You know that pick that was supposed to be in the upper 20s because LA is so good and are coming off winning a Super Bowl? Yea, well they sucked.... Somehow they sucked so bad that that pick turned into the number 6th overall pick.
Odds makers had the Lions grabbing Devon Witherspoon as their secondary was a big need. However when Seattle took him at 5, who knew what would follow? Well, the last thing fans expected.... The Lions ended up passing on Tyree Wilson, Jalen Carter, AND Bijan Robinson by trading down to 12 to take Alabama running back, Jahmyr Gibbs. Hindsight is 2020, but reports now show the Lions wanted Jahmyr over Bijan, which means Holmes and co. got THEIR guy.

Immediately fans realized the inevitable. Fan favorite and oft injured running back, DeAndre Swift, was going to be cut or traded. Almost immediately they traded D'Andre Swift and a 7th round pick for the Saints' 2025 fourth-round pick and a 2023 7th round pick.

This pick is exactly why you and I are sitting on the couch and Brad Holmes gets paid the big bucks. "HoW cAn YoU dRaFt a RuNnInG BaCk ThAt hIgH". Well, the dude is a straight up baller. If I asked you who led Alabama in receiving last year you would probably say some 5 star Wide Receiver. It was Gibbs. Gibbs is being compared Alvin Kamara in the way he can run and catch. He was listed as running a 4.36 at the combine. Gibbs transferred to Alabama last season after spending the first two seasons of his career at Georgia Tech. He carried the ball 151 times for the Crimson Tide in 2022, averaging 6.1 yards per carry and scoring seven touchdowns. He also caught 44 passes for 444 yards and three catching scores. With the departure of Swift and the newly acquired bowling ball back in Montgomery, Gibbs is going to be an immediate impact as a "weapon" and less of a conventional running back. The thunder and lightning combo the Lions will have will be fun to watch behind their top 5 O Line.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Round 1: No. 18 – Jack Campbell, LB, Iowa
"HoW cAn YoU dRaFt a RuNnInG BaCk ThAt hIgH" made sense with the Gibbs pick, but drafting a Linebacker at 18 with other glaring needs like lineman and secondary left Lions fans a bit puzzled by this pick. It hurt a little less when you remember this was their 2nd pick in the first round. Also, many people had Jack Campbell on their board for later in the draft so in terms of liking a guy for who they are, very few people are against this pick. But like I said before, Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell go after guys they have faith in. Until they screw up, fans cant complain too much!
But who is this guy and what makes him so good? Well if you care about RAS or "Relative Athletic Score" Jack is outstanding. He scored a 9.98 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 6 out of 2600 LB from 1987 to 2023. He possesses rare athleticism for being 6-5 and that allows him to be exceptional in coverage. PFF rated him as the highest coverage grade since 2018 Devin White at LSU. He also has great leadership skills as he was Iowa's team captain and won Big10 Defensive Player of the year.
Jack Campbell is going to join a much improving linebacking core that is led by team captain Alex Anzalone and 2nd year stars Malcolm Rodriguez and James Houston. The Lions will likely play him on the outside because off his athleticism but I am certain he will be moved all around the field.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Round 2: No. 34 (from ARI) – Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa
This is getting a bit out of hand for the Lions fans that appreciate positional value when you draft. Clearly Holmes has totally thrown conventional wisdom out of the window. However, tight end IS a need. Of all of the positional units Tight End is probably the weakest. In 2022 the Lions trotted Brock Wright, James Mitchell, and Shane Zylstra....WHOOOO?!?! Exactly...they needed help. Outside of when they took him, most pundits are pretty happy about this pick. Not only did the Lions get their second Iowa captain, but Sam might have landed the best tight end in the entire class.

With LaPorta, the Lions get a player that can do a variety of things. He can play in the slot, in-line or even out wide. This is EXTRA important when you remember that Jameson Williams is suspended for 6 games due to gambling. During his career at Iowa, he had 513 snaps in-line and 304 snaps out of the slot (per PFF). It really wouldn’t be surprising if LaPorta walks into Detroit and earns the starting tight end spot. He has the talent to do it and by being the 34th overall pick, there is going to be some high expectations for him.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Round 2: No. 45 (from DET) – Brian Branch, S, Alabama
For the first time all draft it felt like a player fell to Detroit and they werent reaching for their guy (for better or worse). At 45, the Lions were already drafting their 4th player and wasnt even the end of the 2nd round. Scouts said that Branch was one of the safest picks in the draft due to his lack of a jarring weakness. Branch is siad to have extremely high football IQ which led him to play all around the defense for the Crimson Tide. Branch has primarily handled nickel coverage, but has the range and instincts for single-high or split safety looks. He’s quick, fast and strong with the ability to match up with shifty slots, bigger possession receivers and pass-catching tight ends. Branch is also tough and gritty which makes himu a perfec fit for this Lions team. He has a nose for the ball and is capable of making game-changing plays. He had two interceptions and two forced fumbles during his freshman season at Bama.
Branch made headlines on draft day to be the only guy to stay into day 2 in the greenroom as he was projected to go in the first round. I think that shows how much he cares about this opportunity and has his heart in it.
Also, Branch as a great opportunity to learn from newly acquired Safety, Chauncy Gardner-Johnson who is one of the best young safeties in the league.

Round 3: No. 68 (from DEN) – Hendon Hooker, QB, Tennessee
You ever feeling a little uncomfortable and then you let out a massive fart and all of your uneasiness washes away? Yea, well thats the feeling Lions fans got when they landed Hendon Hooker with the 68th pick. QB wasnt a terrible need, but once we got him, a sense of relief was felt across the fanbase. When the Lions ended up getting Goff in the Stafford trade, it was sort of unsaid that Goff was just the bridge before they draft a QB of the future. However Goff has played way better than expectations and less and less fans are calling for a replacment. So, instead of using one of their first round picks on a QB, they waited and got a guy with first round updside! Now, they are in a much more confortable position at QB with a very solid back up.
The Lions used the 68th pick in order to take the former Tennessee quarterback. The pick came just before the Rams and Raiders were scheduled to pick and been teams have been seen as possible landing spots for a quarterback in this year’s draft. Hooker is recovering from a torn ACL, but his doctor recently informed teams that he is expected to be ready to go by the first week of the regular season. With Jared Goff in place as the starter in Detroit, there won’t be any need for Hooker to rush back for what will likely be a redshirt season if all goes according to plan in Detroit.
This pick was safe, exciting, and sets the Lions up with a solid back up QB. The first time that they can say that since they had Shaun Hill.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Round 3: No. 96 (from ARI) – Brodric Martin, DT, Western Kentucky

Before the draft, a need that was discussed as a hole in the Lions defense was interior line. They got their big boy in the middle with nose tackle, Brodric Martin. After starting his career at North Alabama, Martin transferred to Western Kentucky to play his final two seasons at the FBS level. Since 2021, Martin has played in 26 total games, and has managed to contribute 62 total tackles to the Western Kentucky cause. He’s piled up six tackles for-loss as well as four sacks, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. This move with help the Lions run defense that ranked 4th to last in the NFL last year.

It is no surprise that winning is won in the trenches. The Lions have done a great job of drafting players to build out this line with the likes of Alim McNeill, Isaiah Buggs, and John Cominsky, but with big interior guys like Martin, they usually operate best in a rotation. This move should be huge in terms of depth and opening up even more opportunities for Aiden Hutchison to get to the QB.
This move didn't feel flashy, but it felt needed.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Round 5: No. 152 – Colby Sorsdal, OL, William & Mary

The Lions had to finally wait a bit before this pick due to moving around in the draft and trading away their pick round 4. They elected to add depth to their O-Line by taking Colby Sorsdal out of William and Mary. Sometimes its fun being the big fish in the small pond. Sorsdal started in all 46 games he appeared in during his five-year stint at William & Mary. He spent the duration of his college career at Right Tackle. Sorsdal is the first Tribe player to be drafted since 2016, when the Chicago Bears selected safety DeAndre Houston-Carson in the sixth round.
Serving as an offensive co-captain and starting all 13 games at Right Tackle, Sorsdal anchored an offensive line that helped the Tribe rank third in total rushing offense and fourth in fewest sacks allowed. Behind one of the best offensive line units in the country, the Tribe accumulated an 11-2 record and won the CAA Conference Championship for the first time since 2015.
He will be joining a elite O-line led by Penei Sewell, Frank Ragnow and Taylor Decker. Colby wont start, but he will add in needed depth for a team that's success will only goes as far as their line will take them.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Round 7: No. 219 (from HOU through MIN via PHI) – Antoine Green, WR, North Carolina
With the Lions last pick in a very intense draft, they selected Wide Receiver, Antoine Green out of UNC. Most projected Antoine to be signed to a team after the draft so it is a but of a peculiar pick. In the late 7th round, you are just hoping to take a flier on a guy and hoping they pan out.
The 6-foot-3, 199-pound receiver impressed Detroit's coaching staff at the East-West Shrine Bowl, and has the opportunity to compete for playing time his rookie season. According to NFL Draft Bible, Green is a "technically sound, fluid athlete that can give you a little bit of everything as a wide receiver. Green runs routes, it is as if he is attacking his defender rather than going about his route without considering what the defense is doing. Green has a good release off the line of scrimmage and does not get held up too much when facing press coverage. He uses his hands well to reduce contact against the press and accelerate off the line. He analyzes coverages well and makes quick decisions on how to break down his defender throughout his route. He can read zone defenses and has a knack for finding spaces to make himself an easier target."
With Jameson Williams missing 6 games to start the year, there is an opportunity for Green to poach snaps away from anyone not named Amon-Ra or Marvin Jones. There is also a chance he doesn't make it out of camp. Unlikely, but we will see.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Conclusion:

The 2023 NFL draft for the Detroit Lions was a resounding success. They were able to draft 6 times....BEFORE THE FOURTH ROUND!! The extra picks allowed Detroit to really control the draft and move around in a way to get the guys they wanted. They did not care about who they got and when. They just simply got the guys they wanted. After reflecting on its entirety, they landed a lot of great talent. They were able to add a player at every single positional unit and several will end up starting and making an immediate impact.

Look, the Lions are going to Lions so hold your breath a little longer, however Brad Holmes and Jack Campbell have really turned this franchise around and are making them a legit playoff contender. Right now the Lions are favored to win the NFC North for the first time since god knows when. I am projecting a record of 12 and 5 and a NFL North Division Win.

GO LIONS!!!! (FTP)

2023.06.03 21:24 PM_ME_YOUR_DALEKS A list of 15 selected longreads about Hollywood for the weekend

I originally posted this list of Hollywood related longreads to a gossip subreddit, but have been meaning to clean it up and share it here since. I'm hoping to be more active here from now on, as I am definitely a passionate longreader. :)
"Tears and Terror: The Disturbing Final Years of Mickey Rooney," The Hollywood Reporter
"One of the biggest stars of all time, who remained aloft longer than anyone in Hollywood history, was in the end brought down by those closest to him."
The gripping tale of Mickey Rooney, the legendary child star turned Oscar nominee and how his tormented end unfolded— abused and robbed by his eighth wife and her children. This is a captivating story that exposes the tragic downfall of a true Hollywood icon.
"The Untold Stories of Wes Studi," GQ
"In the process, he's become the biggest star we've ever had in the Native acting world, but he's never attained actual stardom."
A terrific profile of Wes Studi, the renowned Native American actor who stands as a true luminary in the industry. With good insight into the workings of Hollywood, Studi's remarkable journey encompasses not only his experiences as a Vietnam War veteran but also his invaluable wisdom acquired as an activist within the American Indian movement of the 1970s.
"The Rise and Fall of Planet Hollywood," Esquire
"My second wife was on the way back from [an event], and she flew back with George Clooney. He got the call where he found out he was Batman on the plane. . . . He was saying, ‘I am Batman.’. . . There were so many celebrities, it became like high school. You got to hang out with the cool kids.”
Embark on a nostalgic journey through the bygone era of the 1990s, where Planet Hollywood reigned. This movie-themed restaurant, owned by the movie stars themselves, promised a glamorous encounter with the very celebrities who graced the silver screen. At the pinnacle of pop culture's obsession with fame, this chain soared before crashing into bankruptcy not once, but twice. This article will take you back if you ever experienced the dubious pleasure of sampling the lackluster food at a Planet Hollywood franchise.
"Frank Sinatra Jr. is Worth Six Buddy Grecos," GQ
"Not one of them can even imagine what it is like to be Junior, to have a father who would do something like that to his own son, to have a father who is proud enough, fierce enough, brutal enough and big enough to present his son to a thousand faces and then turn him into a shadow."
An exquisitely crafted profile, not only due to its prose but also the way it exudes a remarkable sense of empathy. Frank Sinatra Jr. was not just a walking punchline but trapped in the unfulfilled, lonely cage of his father's fame. This is not just a mere recounting of events, but a sincere examination of the profound loneliness and unfulfilled dreams that defined Junior's existence.
"The Ego Has Landed," People magazine
"He has been compared to nearly every great man in history. The funny thing is, he's the one doing all the comparing."
Step into the world of Philip Michael Thomas, a former TV star whose fleeting fame on Miami Vice propelled him to astonishing levels of egomania. While his name may have faded from memory, this article unflinchingly spotlights a man whose taste of success led him to unparalleled heights of self-importance.
"Here Is What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan in Your Movie," The New York Times
"She proclaimed the director a jerk, her co-star a nightmare and the crew unfriendly. On it went. Schrader listened for a while. He looked stricken. He softly tapped his balding head on the table. Lohan asked him what was the matter."
The Canyons was destined to be a disaster film simply because of the crazy egomaniacs (and worse, in the case of James Deen) involved, at the service of what was, by all accounts, an awful script. I haven't seen the film myself, but I have read this piece several times, which captures the slow trainwreck in progress. At the center of this calamity stands Lindsay Lohan, a star who somehow manages to duck any inklings of sympathy by embodying entitlement and assholeish behavior.
"Val Kilmer Doesn't Believe in Death," Men's Health
"'Cher dipped out for afternoon errands,' he writes. 'Night fell, and I fell asleep. Suddenly I awoke vomiting blood that covered the bed like a scene out of The Godfather. I prayed immediately, then called 911.'"
A poignant piece that details how a once radiant star grapples with the passage of time and the relentless grip of throat cancer. This piece gives a mix of emotions that range from sympathy to a lingering sense of unease - the latter due to Val's bizarre obsession with his Christian Science faith and how it requires reconciling his idols Mary Baker Eddy and Mark Twain, two totally opposed personalities.
"Ten Years Ago, I Called Out David Letterman. This Month, We Sat Down to Talk," Vanity Fair
"I’m sorry I was that way and I was happy to have read the piece because it wasn’t angering. I felt horrible because who wants to be the guy that makes people unhappy to work where they’re working? I don’t want to be that guy. I’m not that guy now. I was that guy then.”
Twenty years ago, Nell Scovell quit her dream job as a writer at The Late Show with David Letterman over sexual harrassment. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, Scovell seizes the opportunity to conduct an interview with Letterman, who confronts the difficult questions. However, amidst the acknowledgment and apology, Scovell grapples with a lingering doubt: Does Letterman's contrition stem from genuine remorse or simply from the consequences of being exposed? This compelling piece questions the intricacies of celebrity apologies and the true nature of accountability.
"Nobody's Victim: An Interview with Samantha Geimer," Quillette
"I know what happened, and I know how I feel. I will not silently let my life be distorted and used by strangers, whatever their intention, knowing full well that they care nothing for me."
An incredibly hard read, this interview is with Samantha Geimer, who was violently raped by Roman Polanski at age 13. Yet this emotionally charged piece has lingered in my thoughts for years, as it grapples with the complex issues surrounding society's expectations of sexual abuse victims, particularly the victims of heinous acts committed by public figures. As you navigate through the interview, be prepared for moments of discomfort as Geimer calls out even those who purport to advocate for her, revealing how their actions have, at times, exacerbated her pain. Bonus: For the intricate details of the legal case and all its twists and turns, see this examination by Jeffrey Toobin in The New Yorker.
"The King of the Geezer Teasers," Vulture
"Off-camera, De Niro’s ordeal was no less daunting — somehow, the great actor had to keep Hollywood’s worst filmmaker from ruining the movie they’d set out to make together."
Written before Bruce Willis' dementia diagnosis, this is a revealing profile that takes you behind the scenes of the straight-to-video empire constructed by Randall Emmett, a mastermind who leverages aging male stars to churn out profitable yet subpar films. There have been accusations since this piece was published that Emmett exploited Bruce Willis to keep his deals going.
"Oliver Stone's Mother Lode," Washington Post
"It's not clear -- from detailed interviews with Elizabeth, Oliver and his mother Jacqueline -- what actually occurred."
What starts as a routine profile of Oliver Stone explodes when his ex-wife drops a bombshell allegation about an incident from his childhood. The normally combative Stone seems uncharacteristically reticent (or perhaps in denial) at times, as the writer tries to untangle the family drama and how personal history intertwines with the filmmaker's work. Bonus: Carole Cadwalladr revisted these allegations thirteen years later in this excellent Guardian profile of Stone.
"Natalie Wood's Fatal Voyage," Vanity Fair
"After a few minutes, Wagner appeared and told the captain, “'She’s gone.'"
What happened the night Natalie Wood drowned? Was it an accident or something more sinister? This article of unparalleled depth explores that tragic night, including incredible revelations from the captain of the yacht - the only surviving witness willing to talk.
"Trapped in the Twilight Zone," Los Angeles Times
"'It’s not that there are no values in Hollywood,' Puttnam says. 'It’s that there is a whimsical lack of consistency on ethical issues. People can be incredibly loyal and forgiving toward some individuals, and completely unforgiving toward others.”
In 1982, a horrific accident killed Vic Morrow and two child actors (working illegally) on the set of The Twilight Zone: The Movie. While the powers that be - John Landis, Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall - faced no long-term consequences and reached new career heights, it wasn't so for the crew members who survived. This compelling article delves into the profound impact that continued to haunt the below-the-line personnel years after the tragedy, and on the enduring trauma it left behind.
"The Miranda Obsession," Vanity Fair
"'On a good day,' she wrote, 'I feel like a shipwrecked person spotting the sight of some nearing shore: a taste in the wind, a softness in the light, a sudden passage of words. Love is so easy in the movies.'"
In the pre-Internet era, the enigmatic figure of Miranda Grosvenor weaved a web of allure and deception over the phone, captivating numerous famous and influential Hollywood men with her mesmerizing voice and innate charm. However, the true identity of Miranda Grosvenor was far from the persona she projected. In a tale that predates the concept of "catfishing," this peculiar and poignant narrative explores the impact of illusion and the bittersweet reality of loneliness.
"The Unbearable Bradness of Being," Rolling Stone
"We are alone. Pitt glances suspiciously at what lies between us on the table, as though it's always the inconsiderate, tattle-telling interloper that spoils a good conversation. 'The dreaded tape recorder,' he says, fingering it."
This starts as a typical celebrity profile from the late 90's, slightly edgy because it was from Rolling Stone and Brad Pitt was in his dudebro era. But things get interesting when Brad has second thoughts, and he and the writer, Chris Heath, get into an argument. Heath shares the power struggle that ensues when a celebrity - at the peak of their influence - attempts to seize control of their profile.

2023.06.03 21:02 Radiant_Signature940 [real] (06/03/23) hashtag?

Hitting the road today. I’ve been away from home since my birthday. Making a stop up North to visit my lovely friend and her new man before I head home on Sunday. I love the bus ride from Bellingham to Seattle; I equally love the Ride from Seattle to Olympia. I like to listen to music and think about nothing. It makes me feel the way that I feel in airports…. I exist, but barely. No one knows me. No one know about my messes or my past. For a few hours I don’t feel quite so heavy. Anyway, I’m packed up and I’m dressed. Makeup is on and my hair is still wet. It’s going to be wet for awhile. I can hear the babies squeaking like little dinosaurs in the other room. #1 and I snuggled, watched some weird dinosaur movie on Netflix and ate popcorn while bestie did homework last night. #1 and I were playing a game where we had to whisper because the dinosaurs were going to eat us. I loved it. It made my mommy heart not hurt so bad.
Bestie gave me a hug after she finished her homework “…thank you for being my best friend; tonight I realized I really, really have a best friend and it made me so happy”. Hurt girls never feel truly safe no matter how intensely they love.
Earlier in the week other bestie had a panic attack when she thought I might not make the trek up north. I haven’t been feeling well and my shoulder pain is a 10. I considered not going but when I heard the panic in her voice I knew that she needed me to meet this guy. I bought the tickets and told her I’d be there on Saturday night. She cried with relief when I told her and it reminded me that hurt girls don’t trust other people’s word.
I think this is probably why I have such ferocious bonds with these women. Sometimes I think they like me a little too much. I’m not quite sure what they like about me but I won’t question it too loudly lest they realize I’m not so great. I’m grateful for their unconditional love. Bestie held me until 2am while I cried last night, and then moments later we talked about how Jesus could be a schizophrenic alien and how maybe schizophrenics are the divine ones. We laughed until we cried some more; at 3am I wiped away my tears and I fell asleep with a heart that didn’t hurt quite as deeply as it did before. Sometimes I think that if this is the lasting love that was set apart for me…. Then I am truly lucky. I never imagined I’d have such precious women in my life.
In other news, my mama heart is broken. My own #1 is struggling deeply. He reminds me of me at that age and I so wish I could dig him out. He cried “mama mama mama” over and over again yesterday. It took all of my self control to not buy a ticket back to Columbus. What mother let’s her son hurt like this? Deep in my core I know he has to go through it. It occurred to me for the first time that my child might die before me and I am truly scared for his life. He called my evil ex for help. I’m grateful that my ex is kind to my son. I’m grateful that he is going to help him even though it scares me. Potato says that when my ex asks about me, he tells him he never talks to me. It reinforces the narrative that I’m a piece of shit and that’s okay because I am. I bet helping my lost boy in my absence really gives that narcissist a gigantic boner. But you know what, if my boy gets help then I don’t care what Narcissist thinks. And that’s how it is with my kids.
Chef guy told Bestie to tell me “goodbye. I’m in love with you🤪😜😝”. Which was pretty funny. He tried really hard to get my attention but I was pretty cold. (Bitter. Vindictive. Drunk. Ice Queen. Two cunt.) (I kinda like the ice Queen one though…. Makes me feel less fragile). I’m not interested in being vulnerable again. I concede. When I found out chef guy had a crush on me I was flattered, but when I look at him I think “how are you going to hurt me?”. I haven’t been dating or talking to anyone but different dudes have approached me at different times. Bellingham guy got the picture and I added his number to the graveyard. English Bus guy asked me out so many times I had to take a picture of his phone number so he would believe me when I told him I would call him. I didn’t. And I won’t. Bitter. I can’t see anyone without wondering what it feels like to have my heart broken by them. It makes my stomach churn. I’ll do it alone, thanks.
My boss has been incredibly tender and kind. I had record sales (for myself) last month and got a kudo email for some sales pitches he was cc’d in. He checks on me and asks me if I’m okay; “remember your worth”. It’s nice to be thought of and while I don’t necessarily need to be handled with satin gloves, I like that he does. Makes me feel like I’m not trash. Even though I am. (Two cunts)
When I get home, I have a lot of plans for myself and my alone time. Hopefully the ghosts are gone now. I need a bigger sketchbook, new poscas and better colored pencils. I have a lot of ideas but I’m scared that I won’t commit. I haven’t bought food in a month and I know the apartment is trashed. If sports guy from the bar texts, I’m gonna ignore him. Work Bestie and I start our routine on Monday. It will be nice to have a routine commitment. Still scouring the net for a puppie pie. I want a King Charles cavalier- I’m going to name it “sterling”, after that town in Alaska. I tried to adopt Sherman but when he attacked my feet and made me bleed I decided against it. Poor Sherman. He had been beaten his whole life. I kinda get it. I don’t want anyone fucking with me anymore either. I need to start looking for costumes for comic con. Since we will be there for the whole weekend, I can wear the vest costume on Friday and the ball gown on Saturday. Drink and draw after 8pm with that one comic book artist with Dark Horse. Something to look forward to.
Anyway, it’s time to hit the road. More later I suppose.

2023.06.03 19:59 XulfRetsam Tips on First Build High End Gaming PC

Hello there!
I am looking to build my first PC, for the first time. I have opened PCs before and changed components, I have a decent knowledge of IT in general but never actually assembled one on my own.
I wanted to ask for some humble opinions or tips on my first build. Basically it revolves around a Gigabyte RTX 4090 that I just ordered (hoping it arrives and not just a brick lol).
The CPU, I am undecided between I7-13700k or I9-13900k, more inclined on the first, since I heard stock temps are better and performs almost the same as the I9.
I would use it for Gaming mainly, VR, and maybe some AI and Stable Diffusion.
I am unsure of the RAM, so I found a similar build that used the one below. I also read about some brackets needed for the CPU? Is it necessary for the I7?
Any tip on this would be highly appreciated. I'd prefer to not set the house on fire or damage any of these fairly expensive pieces XD

2023.06.03 19:50 ThatDoodch Show Review: Memorial Meltdown (5.28.23)

Eventually... these write-ups may have another home... but for now here's a little something I wrote about the day I attended Meltdown. Looking forward to doing a lot more of these as the year goes on. Also, we just hit 900 subs! The official climb to 1K is upon us!
Dogs In A Pile were a hot topic of discussion on a equally *HOT* day in Lake George, NY at Charles R. Wood Park. Fans adorned with Dogs merch galore roamed the second day of Memorial Meltdown waiting for their heroes to take the stage at 5:30pm. One Time Weekend opened the day’s festivities with a bouncy and surprisingly versatile set. Interested in catching them based on word of mouth from Dogs bassist Sam Lucid, I was not disappointed. The band had the ability to make the crowd groove and headbang at the drop of a dime. Lead-vocalist Ian D’Arcangelo mentioned they will play on Saturday at Peach Music Festival in a few weeks (Dogs will play on Friday). By the audible reaction, it seemed as if the talented and young Connecticut group earned more than a handful of fans that would gladly show up.
The next slot belonged to Mihali & Friends as Twiddle’s frontman Mihali Savoulidis and a group of rotating talent went on to please the continuously filling-in crowd. The phones came out of many-a-pocket as Dogs guitarist/vocalist Jimmy Law plugged in for his first of two songs as a special guest on stage – he would later join Twiddle in their headlining set for a tune (“Breakididown”). Mihali’s cover of Dave Matthews Band’s “#41” was a hit in a region of the country that has heard many epic versions of the song by its original creators.
With the scorching sun winding down, the Dogs took the stage following a loving introduction by their friend and festival promoter Dave Ehmann. “These guys have my heart and I know they have yours too”, Ehmann said to the crowd before mentioning the band would return to the park for Adirondack Independence Music Festival in September.
Naturally, the Dogs started their set with “Frosty” on an 86-degree day. Lead singer Brian Murray, looking effortlessly cool with his groovy sunglasses and festival crew shirt, led the charge on what’s become a fan-favorite since being debuted late last summer at Garcia’s in Port Chester. A “Blues for Brian” sandwich followed with a “2001” filling that knocked the collective socks off the rambunctious Dog Pound – a special contingent of supporters who always create a fun, safe and energetic dancefloor for fans old and new alike to enjoy.
Should they rename the event space “Charlie” R. Wood Park? The Dogs made their case with a ripping rendition of “Charlie”, one of their premier jam vehicles, that segued into an epic “No Quarter” cover with keyboardist Jeremy Kaplan manning the mic. A set highlight “G Song” allowed Jimmy Law to command a wonderfully earned solo.
From there, it was time for drummer Joe Babick to wow attendees on the kit as he showed off his chops and stamina while beating the instruments of his craft to a pulp. This led to Twiddle’s Adrian Tramontano joining the band to finish off the “Drums” section and break into Dave Ehmann’s favorite Dogs cover “Samson and Delilah”. “Say Something”, which has become a staple show-closeencore, ended the set on wildly successful high note.
As the night came to a close and with Twiddle recently announcing their upcoming hiatus, one couldn’t help to wonder if Dogs In A Pile are destined to plant their flag as one of the premier Northeast jam bands. An accolade amongst an endless list of benchmarks the five-piece band can accomplish along their career. With their current trajectory and future outlook, their stars are starting to shine as bright as the sun was coming down on a beautiful Memorial Meltdown day filled with family, friends and something the Dogs are very used to providing – joy.
Catching up with Sam Lucid post-show, he was graciously open to contributing to what I hope to be a building tradition. Asking one of the guys what their favorite jam of the night was! We’ll call this edition “Sam’s Jam”.
Sam’s Jam: G Song. “I felt like we really connected on that jam”, Lucid said. When asked if he thought that would be the unanimous pick across the board for the band he interestingly mentioned: “we all respect each other’s opinions on what works and what doesn’t work. It can differ from night-to-night. But that’s how you grow closer together and as a playing unit. Everyone has a voice in Dogs In A Pile.”

2023.06.03 19:44 NamelessNanashi [The Gods of Dragons: Beginning] Ch 15 - Burn Baby Burn

--- Table of Contents ---
Autumn 4986, 16 Aoimoth
Shon and Nangran hobbled their horses at the base of a steep hill deep in the woods north of Hamerfoss. They'd left at fourth bell, before any of the other Squires had woken for their morning run, and it had still taken them hours of riding through narrow trails to reach this place. At least they hadn't run into any monsters. The snow that had dusted the landscape during the night lay thick here, crunching underfoot and occasionally flopping noisily to either side as it fell from the tall evergreen branches.
Shon adjusted the strap of his sword across his chest and reached his left hand back to brush shaking fingers over its hilt. He'd been glad when the Paladins insisted he take it with him. To them, it marked Shon as a representative of Hengist and the Temple. To Shon, it was a sign of his hard work and resolve. Having it was a comfort.
Nangran started up the hill, and Shon hurried to follow. The smith hadn’t spoken a word since they set out, not even to try and ease Shon’s anxiety, for which Shon was grateful. Master Daunas had tried to sound confident as Shon saddled his borrowed horse, and The Major General had offered him encouragement as they mounted. Neither realized how much that just drove home the desperation of the situation in Shon’s mind.
The smith pulled his heavy cloak tighter, and Shon looked away. He hadn’t bothered to wear his cloak. He'd never really felt chilled in the winter like others seemed to. Now that he knew why, he wished he had. Cold continued to swirl around him, enhanced by his worries. If he could just block those emotions, the power would never have been a problem to begin with.
The trees thinned the higher they climbed, disappearing almost entirely as they crested the top of the hill. The clearing looked over the treetops, offering an unimpeded view of the horizon. Forest all around, with flatland to the south and rocky mountain peaks to the north. Only a handful of small trees grew in the clearing, and in the middle stood a little ramshackle hut only slightly larger than an outhouse.
Nangran threw his arm out, stopping Shon from walking past him, "Don't touch anything. And don't be surprised if he says no right off."
Shon nodded, trying to swallow down his fear so it wouldn't be seen in his eyes. Dropping his hand, Nangran started forward again, finishing, "Be honest, but not insulting." The instructions, -or perhaps advice?- seemed like common courtesy, which made Shon wonder why quiet Nangran had bothered to say anything.
As they drew closer to the little shack, Shon could make out a sign on the door. He squinted to read it and had just made out 'No Soliciting' when the door swung open, banging against the wall and sending birds into flight. An old man, so thin he looked like a skeleton with yellow skin pulled tight across its bones, stormed out. Wearing nothing but a loincloth, he was shaking a thick stick at them that glinted with red rubies in the low autumn light.
"I already paid my dues for this decade! So you can take your request and shove it-" Shon’s hand instinctively reached for his sword, but Nangran just crossed his arms over his barrel chest. The old -virtually naked- man stopped yelling mid-rant and lifted one shriveled arm to shade his eyes as he squinted at them, "Eh? Flintchest, what’re you doing way out here with a blasted mage in tow?"
Rather than answer, Nangran started forward again, he didn't much care for talking, let alone shouting. Looking from Nangran to the loincloth man, Shon slowly lowered his arm, but still took position to the left and just behind the Smith as they approached the crazy man with the glittering club.
"No mage." Nangran said as he came right up to the strange old man, "Squire." he glanced over his shoulder at Shon and finished, "Sorcerer."
The old man spat on the ground and moved his squint to Shon. Running his eyes from the top of his black head to the tip of his polished boots and back, exaggerating the movement before he stopped at the Squire’s cold blue eyes.
He spat again, then barked "Where's your familiar?" scanning first the ground at Shon's feet then the sky above his head.
Shon blinked at him, furrowing his brow in confusion at the question. The mage snapped his fingers impatiently, "Your familiar! All Sorcerers have a familiar."
Nangran came to his rescue, "Just woke last night," he said shortly.
The mage spat again but didn't argue, "Well, come in then." Shon looked sideways at Nangran, but the Smith had already begun following the skinny old man into the shack. Shon hurried to catch up.
Inside, Shon's eyes were assaulted with a sparkling rainbow of colors. The room they'd entered was considerably larger than the outside would suggest, with plush carpet and a stuffed high-back armchair in front of a blazing fire in the opposite wall. Shelves full of exotic plants, glowing glass jars, and glittering stones filled every available space, reflecting off one another and setting streaks of light to dance on the floor and walls like sun rays through crystal.
There was too much to take in, so Shon focused on their host. The old man was slipping into a thick robe of deep purple velvet. He'd hung the club on the wall beside the door, which looked just as decrepit on this side as it had on the outside.
"Make a habit of greeting visitors half-naked and swinging an old fireball wand?" Nangran asked as he slipped out of his cloak.
"Keeps the conversations short." the old man replied tersely, tying his belt and turning to his guests. With boney knuckles on boney hips and glare firmly planted on his wrinkled face, he snapped, "Don't bother getting comfortable, Flintchest; you'll be leaving soon enough."
The Smith ignored him, hanging his cloak on the hook that had presumably held the mage's robe. "Got a favor to ask," he said, but the old man was already shaking his head,
"More like a favor to cash in. That's the only reason you're in here and not smoking in a hole outside."
Nangran ignored the threat and motioned from Shon to the old man and back. "Archmage Ivelm." The mage looked Shon up and down again as Nangran made the introductions, “Squire Shon.”
"Not much longer, I'd say." Ivelm said to Nangran as he finished his second examination, "It's to the Guild with this one. Too much magic." he turned his head and spat in a brass can by the door. It rang out with a loud ‘ting!' and Ivelm sniffed, looking down at Nangran again, "What do you want, Flintchest?"
"Need a seal. So the boy doesn't freeze Hamerfoss more than it already is." the smith crossed his arms, watching the mage and somehow still seeming completely at ease.
"Eh?!" Ivelm exclaimed, leaning far forward. Shon had to try hard not to crinkle his nose as the old man brought his face close enough that Shon could smell Ivelm's breath. Garlic, the mage ate a lot of garlic…
"So… you don't want to be a mage, do you?" he demanded, glaring down his nose at him. Shon shook his head and would have answered with a 'no ser.' except the mage continued, "Rather swing around some hunk of metal like a brute?"
Shon blinked stupidly, and Nangran cleared his throat, "Watch what you say about my swords, old man."
Ivelm ignored the smith as soundly as Nangran had ignored the Archmage, and continued to Shon, "The powers of the universe are at your fingertips. Blood blessed with the strength of the elements, and you wanna throw it all away," he threw his arms into the air, still uncomfortably close, "And for what? Some illusion of an honorable death by the sword?"
Shon didn't know what to say. He looked past the affronted mage's face, only an inch from his own, to Nangran. But the smith gave no sign he was going to help. Shon’s future depended on convincing this strange old man, this Archmage, to help…
Shon wasn't the type to try and convince anyone of anything, but the least he could do was explain himself. Shon stepped back from the mage to address him from a more comfortable distance. "I chose to dedicate my life to perfecting my art, and my art is martial combat," he said. Ivelm wrinkled his nose, his mouth twisting as if he were going to spit again, but Shon continued, "magic would be better served in the hands of someone who wants it badly enough to work for it. Like I've worked for my martial skills."
Ivelm leaned away from Shon, his eyebrows lifted into his frizzled gray hair. Shon looked to Nangran, hoping for some sign that this was a good response. The smith smiled from behind the mage.
"Soooo…" Ivelm drew the word out, "You think only those who dedicate themselves to strict study and practice should wield the power of the universe?" he leaned forward again, turning his head and fixing one eye on Shon like a bird. As if trying to catch him in a lie.
Shon nodded, confused, then asked, "Isn't that what it takes to effectively wield magic? Focused study?"
Ivelm didn't answer the question, instead turning his face to examine Shon with the other eye, scanning him up and down yet again. The old man had looked him up and down so much Shon wouldn't be surprised if the next question were about his hair or boots.
But Ivelm didn't ask another question. Instead, he stood straight and spat into the brass can with another ringing 'ting!' "I like this one," he said, turning his back on Shon and facing Nangran, "But it's too much." he shook his head, lifting his hands in helpless surrender, "Too much power, and ice at that. Stubborn element that one. And it's so finicky to block just elemental magic..."
Ivelm continued talking but Shon heard very little of it. A hole had opened in his gut, and it felt like his heart was racing his stomach to fall into it. But Nangran just rolled his eyes at the mage, interrupting, "Used to be the name in new magic items... made shackles to hold Archmages." he squinted at Ivelm, who had frozen mid-head shake, "Must've gotten rusty out…"
Ivelm snapped his fingers under the Smith's nose to stop him talking, "The mind does not rust, Flintchest!" he huffed, one bare foot tapping under his robe, "Not like your swords and shriveling muscles." Nangran just stared stubbornly, his thick, muscled arms still crossed over his broad chest.
The mage continued to tap his foot, his nose in the air. But as the silence stretched, Ivelm looked down at the smith, who continued to say nothing. The silent battle of wills ended when Ivelm threw his arms up in disgust and shook a finger under Nangran's nose, nearly hitting it, declaring, "I'll show you. I'll make a gem especially for this lad, and you'll see the mind only continues to grow sharper!"
He spun on his heel back to Shon, who had just made out the smith's returned smile from behind the mage when the old man snapped his fingers in Shon's face, making him jump. "Well, what are you waiting for? Come here so I can take some measurements!" Ivelm swung around again and marched across the room to a large workbench with plants and gems scattered across it. Shon scrambled after him, praying his thanks to Hengist and suddenly feeling light enough to float. His anxieties dropping away and melting like snow in summer.
***
It was already noon, and no one had come to see Her. She jumped up to grab the bars of Her window, pulling Herself up to peak out but seeing nothing but new snow and tree trunks. She was full to bursting with nervous energy, amplifying every sound and sensation. Footsteps sounded outside Her door, and She dropped from the window, sprinting across the room and resting Her ear on the wood.
“Ran, recheck the lab. Brom, with me.” Archmage Morndancer spoke with his strange alternation between draconic and common as he passed Her door without stopping. She could easily make out the swish of their robes on the stone hall leading away. Three people, Brom, Ran, and Archmage Morndancer. And yet the scurrying of too many feet to be only the two apprentices and Archmage Shaloon, sounded from the floor above. There were strangers in her tower again. Many strangers. Something was happening, something big…
She ran to Her window again, just for something to do, seeking some way to burn off some of the anxiety of not knowing what was going on around her.
A roar from down the hall, a roar of pain, sent ice washing through her veins. She slammed into the door at full speed. Pounding on the wood, She called out, “Brom?! Ran?!” Nothing. Then a yip cut short, followed by barking and yowling.
She shook the handle with both hands, rattling the door on its hinges, “BROM! RAN!” Something was happening to Her treasures, something terrible… The door handle began to glow, the metal warping and sagging as it melted. The knowledge that She would be in more trouble than She had ever been in before was nothing compared to Her terror. She wrenched the handle back with all Her might, splashing molten metal across Her bed, lighting fires that flared in her panic, and sending smoke to curl up to the ceiling.
She didn’t care. She shouldered the door open and ran.
“Red?!” She passed the first open door but couldn’t stop as Ran called out to Her. Reaching Her treasures' room, She tried to stop but slipped, slamming into the ground with a sticky splash. A final whining bark started a buzzing in Her ears as She stared, transfixed, at Her hands. They were painted red. Warm and sticky. The overpowering stench of iron nearly made Her gag as She looked up to see Morndancer toss aside a glittering golden wolf pup, the body flopping limply over the corpse of its mother and siblings.
Her world went red.
***
The last sample was taken care of, but something roared with enough ferocity to shatter glass.
Morndancer's head snapped around in time for him to fall back, shielding his face with his hands as the Firewyrm exploded. White-hot fire engulfed Her and spread out to the stone floor and walls. His robes began to smoke, the new fire protection spells woven into them being overpowered by the sheer ferocity of the blaze.
Brom had no such spells, and he had only managed a single step towards the girl before he fell to the ground, writhing for only a moment before lying still. The Archmage heard Ran scream from the hall before the journeyman stumbled past the door, flailing wildly. Barely discernible as human inside the flames.
The Firewyrm moved towards him, stepping through Brom’s head, turned to ash, and blown up to dance in the air on the same heatwaves causing the girl's hair to wave wildly about Her. She didn't seem to notice, Her face was expressionless and her eyes glowed as red as the scales across Her cheek. Morndancer tried to snap his fingers, but the golden collar around Her neck melted, Her clothes burning off and leaving Her naked and terrible in the flames.
His robe was burning now, and only the pain of that could pull his eyes from the Firewyrm as he pointlessly tried to beat the fires off. He fell back, hitting the wall, which drooped, sagging and dripping molten stone onto his head and face. Then he fell further back, into a gate that opened behind him.
Shaloon pulled him through the portal and into the library three stories up. The Firewyrm roared again and the tower walls shook with the force of it. The gate closed, but Morndancer continued to burn. He could hear screaming. Was it him? Was he screaming? Fire burst up the spiral stairs in the middle of the room, and apprentices, both their own and many sent from the central and western Talon, scrambled about in a panic, some even leaping from the windows.
Shaloon cursed, holding out her hand and summoning her sword again. She had to draw the circle five times before a second gate finally formed, and she dove through it, pulling Morndancer along with her as it quickly closed. An apprentice reached through, and his arm fell at Morndancer’s feet, miles away in the sitting room of his manor back in Smildna.
He laughed. Shaloon slapped him, and he laughed. Ronni, his daughter, burst through the door, her own daughter, only a year old, perched on her hip, and still, he laughed. “What’s wrong?! What happened to him?!” he barely registered his daughter's words and continued to laugh, rolling around on the ground in mirthful madness.
“The Firewyrm She…” Shaloon started, but Morndancer yelled over her in draconic,
She is true! She is pure! She is rage! The children will come and raise the grandchildren! We have only to await the coming of those Chosen!” the room faded around him, becoming washed out and gray then finally black as he continued to laugh and shout, “They take those who slew them and use them to raise themselves anew…
He couldn’t feel his burns or the hands trying to settle him. He saw only darkness and stars. And the eyes of his Master boring into his soul from the outer planes.
***
Shon couldn't remember ever feeling so drained in his life. He'd been tired before, exhausted even, but it had never felt quite like this. The eccentric Archmage Ivelm had ordered him to 'empty his energy' into stone after stone. Measuring the weight, color, and temperature of each. Making notes in chalk directly on his table and talking to himself. Shon was shocked the first time he saw the smooth rock handed to him change from a translucent white to an onyx as black as his hair, but by the time they'd gone through the twentieth stone, Shon had decided to stop counting.
Ivelm, however, seemed to get more and more excited with each one. Giving Shon reason to suspect the mage may be taking the energy for himself. After what felt like hours, Ivelm finally stoppered the potion he'd mixed with the most recent jewel, glowing a soft pale blue, and stepped back from the workbench, bony hands on bony hips.
"It can be done." Ivelm swiveled to face Nangran, "He's strong, I don’t know how he managed not to manifest until now, but it's all focused in one elemental direction." he rubbed his chin and looked at the ceiling, completely ignoring Shon's arched eyebrow. "It has a bit of divine flavor as well. But I suppose that shouldn't be surprising for a training Paladin." The mage stopped musing and glared down his nose at Nangran, who had made himself comfortable in the oversized wingback chair by the fire, "It will have to be a lot bigger than a piece of jewelry would allow."
The smith just hummed and sipped at his mug. When had he gotten a mug? Shon looked from one old man to the other. It was apparent Ivelm wanted Nangran to ask him for details, but the ever stoic smith said nothing.
Shon was tired. His limbs felt heavy, and the weight of his simple uniform felt more like platemail. He was just about to ask what the Archmage meant, to hurry them along, when Ivelm threw his hands in the air and said, "You'll need to find somewhere to put it. I would recommend that." he pointed at the hilt of Shon's sword over his shoulder, continuing, "If the lad is insisting on swinging a metal stick around instead of harnessing the ultimate powers of the universe then that same stick might as well sap the power literally as well as figuratively." Shon arched an incredulous eyebrow but Ivelm wasn't paying attention, finishing, "I can get it down to about an inch and a half orb. At the smallest. If you want something different, say so now."
Nangran set his mug on the ground and stood with a grunt and a groan. Shon just wanted to go home and sleep for a week, so when the smith reached for the hilt of his sword for a closer look Shon hardly noticed, until the squat smith jerked it down to eye level. Shon swung his arms like a drowning man and stepped wide to prevent himself from falling over.
"Quit wigglin'," Nangran grumbled, studying the sword's pommel with a professional eye. "One and a half'll do, preferably in a tear…"
The mage snorted and continued to ignore the struggling half crouched Shon, his voice dripping sarcasm as he addressed the smith, "Shall I wrap it in silk for you as well?"
"Na." Nangran let go of the sword, and Shon stood straight, lifting his leg to shake out the knee. "Drop it off when you’re done." the Mage snorted again but didn't counter.
None of them were interested in extending the visit, so Nangran grabbed his heavy cloak and shrugged it on while Shon waited by the door. "It will be at least a fortnight," Ivelm called from his position by the workbench, not about to walk them out.
Nangran grunted his confirmation and opened the battered and decrepit door, letting the wind and early autumn snow blow in on their way out. Shon followed numbly, his eyes unfocused as he walked, and ran right into the much shorter man. Nangran hardly moved as Shon bounced off of him. He was squinting into the distance, one large hand shading his eyes. Shon stared at Nangran for a moment before following the direction of his gaze over the tree line.
Smoke. A LOT of smoke. The black clouds billowed violently into the sky, occasionally lit from below by sparks shot high into the air.
"Elm!" Nangran shouted. Shon had never heard the man call so loudly. The Archmage must have also been shocked because the door to his hut swung open and he stuck his head out to look to either side, eyes wide.
"Flintchest, what?" but he soon saw what, "But, that's the old chemist's tower… What?" he stood in shocked confusion for a heartbeat before turning back into the hut. Shon looked from the shack to Nangran, but before he could say anything, the mage was back, struggling with two long rods, one blue with what looked like waves painted all around, the other black and studded with diamonds.
"Don't just stand there!" Ivelm snapped at the two as he finally managed to slip the blue rod into a sheath at his side. He then pointed the diamond rod at the space between two close-growing trees. Shon heard him say something unintelligible, and one of the diamonds shot out of the tip of the rod to hover between the trees before expanding into a portal.
Beyond the magical gate, Shon could hear the fire roar. It sounded how he imagined the burning hells might sound, but as he followed the two men through, he realized his imagination was tame by comparison.
The smell of burning flesh and hair choked him as they stepped clear of the gate's magic. The heat smashed into them like a wall, and all three brought their arms up to shield their faces. Around them were the charred remains of what looked like humans, their faces buried in the mud as if they'd been trying to run from the blaze. Shon had to swallow the bile that rose in his throat and focused instead on the fire Ivelm had said was a tower.
It was completely engulfed in bright flames of all colors. Squinting through the light, he could see the stone walls melting like wax. The arch of the doorway sagged in the middle, and Shon's eyes went wide. Someone was in there.
He would've had to shout over the roar of the flames, but it didn’t matter; Ivelm was already raising the blue wand, jerking his fingers in strange ways and mouthing words impossible to hear. Water shot out the tip of the wand with the force of a ballista and hissed against the glowing stones.
It wasn't possible. It must be a trick of the flickering flames. But the figure turned its face to them, long hair whipping about as it took steps in their direction.
"Don't just stand there, boy!" Ivelm screamed. "They must have a fire-resist spell; those things don't last forever!"
Nangran grabbed Shon’s upper arm, pulling him a step closer to the fire and down so he could shout in his ear, "Freeze a path."
Shon swallowed. He was so tired, literally drained. He didn't know what to do or how to do it. But the figure in the fire reached out to them only to pull away from a drop of molten rock. Shon fell to his knees, placing his hands on the ground and pleading silently to Hengist. He didn’t know what to do, didn’t know how to control the power. He tried picturing a path of snow between himself and the tower base, concentrating on it until the mental image overlaid the real world, as he did when imagining phantom fighters during practice.
Ice snaked its way from Shon's fingers towards the burning tower along his mental path, powered by the fear that he wouldn't be fast enough to save the person inside. The water from Ivelm's wand helped carve the way, and Shon grunted physically as he struggled to push mentally. His breathing came heavy and ragged. He could feel the fire melting the edges of the ice as if it were a part of him. Still, he fought back and forced it to continue to form into solid sheets moving closer and closer to the figure still trapped in the tower.
Wherever the ice formed solid, it stayed. The fire drawing back from it until, finally, it reached the doorway. He urged the ice to climb up the doorframe, to hold it in place and keep it from falling, from moving at all.
Shon was seeing double. He struggled to focus on the figure and flinched as they stepped onto the frozen path. The ice hissed and melted under their bare unsteady feet, he could feel it... feel them, their heat, on his ice.
It was a young woman. Or an older girl. She was naked; her clothes burned away by the fire. Her long hair was being blown forward by the heat of the burning tower, obscuring her face. As she moved closer, Shon could make out strange red stripes snaking around her body, standing in stark relief against her pale skin.
Ivelm stepped in front of him then, throwing Nangran's cloak around her shoulders as she crumpled to the ground. Nangran himself knelt beside Shon, resting one massive hand on the Squire's back. "You can stop, lad…" his voice trailed off, and Shon felt an emptiness open in his chest. No one could have survived that, not if they hadn't already made it to the entrance like the girl. As if to punctuate the thought, Shon managed to focus his eyes only to see the tower's entrance wall fold and collapse in on itself, the stones flowing like soft wax.

2023.06.03 19:43 XulfRetsam Opinions on my first Custom build PC

2023.06.03 19:04 Nachtjaeger68 Aunt's new neighbors are entitled buttholes- who insist they own my property.

Need some backstory, so will try to give the Cliff Notes version. I'm originally from rural Western NY. My beloved maternal Grandparents lived at 6 "X" Street. X Street dead-ends at the driveway of the house across the street, 5 X Street. (Don't ask me to explain why the street was never extended, or the house numbering.)
Mom raised me alone, and was renting. The vacant lot next to the Grandfolks came up for sale. Mom bought it with the Grandfolks' help around 1975, put a nice used mobile home on it, and this became 4 X street. There is also a vacant lot at what would be 3 X street.
When I was an adult living at home by choice in 1990 or so, that vacant lot at 3 X street came up for sale for a super low price. The State was planning to put a new prison in my hometown, so I snapped that lot up as an investment. Aaaaand the State promptly cancelled the prison project. Real estate Tycoon I ain't. I was also considering building what would be considered a Tiny House on that lot, before I moved across the state and got married in '92.
So, going counter-clockwise around the dead end, we have the Grandfolks' old place at 6 X Street, Mom's old place at 4 X Street, my vacant lot at the incipient 3 X Street, and the neighbors at 5 X Street. (Wonderful folks, with the exception of having bought the last house on a dead-end street and getting upset if anybody turns around in their driveway.)
In the mid 2000s, the Grandfolks passed away after very long, healthy and happy lives. My Aunt "Jane" (late surprise for the Grandfolks, more like my big sister) and her husband "Dick" had come into some money, so they bought the Grandfolks' place lock, stock and barrel from the Estate, and still live there.
Mom passed on in 2014. The trailer and land were pretty much her whole Estate. I ended up selling Mom's place (with her newer upgraded trailer that replaced the one I grew up in) to another single Mom just starting out. "Sue" was wonderful. I had offered her my lot for a pittance, but the taxes on just Mom's place (this is New York State) were going to be enough of a burden. So all was right with the world, except I'm still paying taxes on that white elephant of a vacant lot. When she became more financially secure, Sue wanted to buy my lot. But life happens, I live 300 miles away and was working full time, so we never did get together with a lawyer to make the sale happen.
Fast forward to late 2022. Sue has wisely moved out of state (like I said, New York State.) Like any reasonable person, she sold the property to the first interested party who met her price and put the cash in her hand. Sue is totally blameless here. My Aunt's new neighbors, as stated in the title, are entitled buttholes (hence to be referred to as the EBs.) But not your garden variety EBs. These are the extremely nasty and possibly violent type of EBs.
The trouble started on moving day. One of them parked in my Aunt's driveway. And refused to move when she arrived home and asked politely to park in her own driveway. This person also used a certain term in Spanish which refers to the world's oldest profession. My Aunt had to find out from Google Translate that she'd been mortally insulted. Strike One.
Next, there are beautiful trees of various types all along the boundary between the Grandfolks' old place and Mom's old place. You might think these trees have sentimental value to the family, and you would be right. Just one example: A beautiful young Burr Oak that grew from an acorn Granddad and I found at a State Park when I was just a little guy. EBs proceeded to saw off every inch of limb that encroached on their property, "because it's their right." Techincally true, but still a major d**k move. If any of those trees die, my Aunt and I will cry. Strike Two.
Next, the EBs started trespassing on my vacant lot. When my Aunt let them know that it wasn't their land, they told her that it belonged to them, and that "they have papers." (Reddit fans can already see where this is going.) And again the same word directed at my elderly Aunt. Strike Three.
Cut to May 2023. EBs have now started clearing brush and removing trees from my property. (Yeah, Tree Law. Got my fingers crossed on that one.) My Aunt wandered over there to see what they were up to. EB promptly threatened to commit an act of armed violence on her person if she ever set foot on "his" land again. (Again, MY land, that she has permission to occupy.) And that he is building a house there for his brother.
Oh HELL na! Dem folks done effed up. Fornication be upon them, and upon their House, and upon the steeds which bore them hence. Luckily I just retired, and have the free time to deal with this nonsense. The money to do so? Not so much. Dang, I hate it when personal honor, family honor, and principle get in an argument with my bank account.
Of course Aunt Jane, Uncle Dick and I have called the local PD's non-emergency line to report the trespassing, harassment and threats. I am very pleased to say we did NOT hear "It's a civil matter." My Lady Wife and I are headed out there Monday to try to deal with all this. Yeah, we're looking for a real estate attorney out there.
While I would prefer to deal with the matter myself peacefully and legally, this is New York State, where such is frowned upon. So I will need a police standby when I go to speak with the EBs. And again when I start putting up POSTED-NO TRESPASSING signs. EBs ain't gonna like that one bit. IDGAF. Funny part is, before this last incident, I would have sold the EBs that lot just to get out from under the taxes. Now, they ain't getting their hands on that land at any price they could possibly afford. I do have my price- that price is now ten times the current assessed valuation.
Right now I am knocking the dust (okay, rust, and lots of it) off my Spanish, as the EBs reportedly have the annoying tendency to pretend not to understand English if you tell them something they don't want to hear. Looking forward to looking the EBs in the eye, and telling them in clear, properly accented Spanish to get off my property if they don't want lots more trouble. And that they have a huge problem with me already.
In the unlikely event I lose my temper (I normally get like ice when extremely angry) and decide to start hurling insults, I will do so in German, because turnabout is fair play. (Grandma was born in Germany, and immigrated legaly in 1911.) Heck, even "I love you" sounds intimidating if you shout it in German.
I have considered inviting my old friends from "out home", and their friends' friends, over for a fun day of target shooting (this can be done legally and safely), country music, and grilling on my property. That would peacefully and legally send the EBs the appropriate message. But yet again, New York State, and as the EBs are a "protected class" I'm sure NY Attorney General Leticia James would be all over us like stink on you know what, and would sue us all into bankruptcy.
Will update this as events develop. Wish us luck.

2023.06.03 18:54 YouPeopleHaveNoSense Bulk soot removal hacks?

Wanting to produce a few puzzle based crafts with lots of small pieces. I'm trying to find a solution to remove soot in bulk rather than hand brushing each piece.
I know that I can reduce soot by using air assist, lower power, multiple passes and better quality wood, etc. But I really want the pieces to be extra clean in addition to these measures. Masking and hand cleaning are a no-go because of the time required.
I've not tried these, but what that come to mind is:
Soaking in a tub of alcohol or mineral spirits with a bit of agitation
Some kind of set up similar to the way reloading brass is cleaned (corn cob husks and agitation)
Any other ideas?
